    Honestly, I don't think Hank Scorpio would have worked. He's too nice a guy, and he loves Homer. His whole character would have been ruined if in the movie, they make him out to be a legitimate villain trying to kill the Simpsons. I'm glad they went with a new character.

    • @RubyBlueUwU
      @RubyBlueUwU ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Yeah Hank’s whole thing was that he was a damn good boss and an absolute joy to work for, who just happens to be a supervillain (or the owner of an evil corporation). He wouldn’t have worked for the role, as fun as it would have been to see him again.

    The only thing I was disappointed about was that there was no Sideshow Bob, arguable the best recurring character in the history of the show (and my personal favourite). He could've made a fantastic villain for this film and would have a clear motive for trapping the whole town inside a giant dome, not just the Simpson family, as a final revenge for foiling so many of his plans. Quoting from the episode 'Bother from Another Series' : "Sometimes I wish this dam would burst and bury this cursed town."

      This is a fair point as to why Hank Scorpio couldn't have possibly been the villain for this movie. Simply put, he has no clear motivation to take any action against Springfield, because he knows Homer as a decent ally rather than a liability or an enemy. Sideshow Bob on the other hand would definitely had the motivation and brains to do something like this, but I see him as lacking the means of doing so. Anyway, that's just my opinion.

    • @strawberrysoulforever8336
      @strawberrysoulforever8336 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      This could work if Bart was still the main character. We needed someone who was either not connected to the series as a whole, or who held a grudge against Homer, because he is the main character. SSB has a grudge against the whole family, but Homer's the one this movie has to focus on, whereas the family member that stands out in this situation will always be Bart. Also, why would Bob trap his own town in a dome? For this to work, it had to be personal.

    • @TheRandomestRedHead

    • @Kobolds_in_a_trenchcoat
      @Kobolds_in_a_trenchcoat 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@ToonReel001 russ should have been opposed by Lisa. Lisa is the show's usual environmentalist and is the dedicated smart character. She could easily have pointed out how ridiculous and stupid a giant dome is and how russ seems to oppose Springfield out of some ridiculous vendetta instead of real environmentalism. It would also give Lisa something to do since Colin sucks and is boring. Besides, you can still have Maggie ultimately save her since it's not like Lisa knows how to fight. It also fixes russ's anticlimactic fight with bart and homer since, 1. I don't think either of them even know about russ really, I don't remember them having more than like one scene together before then and that was when russ announced the bomb, a completelyone-sided scene with no interaction from the Simpson family. And 2. It would better pace the ending dance transitioning to Lisa confronting russ would let bart and homer have a more natural end.

    I think this movie is great, given the difficult task of appealing to both audiences as mentioned in this video. You can't possibly make this an amazing movie without appealing too much to a certain group. I watched this years before I had ever seen a Simpsons episode and liked it. I rewatched it now, after watching nearly every Simpsons episode made and still liked it, albeit for different reasons. It was an in-depth analysis into what makes Homer himself, and looks at various different relationships. For me, the weakest part of the story was the absurd plot, which seemed too akin to a modern day lazy Simpsons plot.

    I had really mixed feelings. The movie succeeded perfectly at the most important thing, feeling like a logical, even seamless extension of the series. I mention this because oddly it's something movies of television shows end up stumbling over a lot. Unfortunately it never rises above that and feels like anything more than a somewhat forgettable long episode of the series, and doesn't really have any lasting impact on the show overall. Basically, this could have been condensed to a two part episode and accomplished just as much, without needing to be a theatrical release.

    I just rewatched the film for the first time in over a decade after finishing the first nine seasons of the show and I thought it was a very good addition to the series. It’s interesting hearing you talk about what the film had to do because when I first watched the film when I was like 10, I liked it fine and remembered quite a bit of it, but now that I know all the characters it was a much better experience that flowed easier and had a lot more heart. I think this is well above most episodes of the early seasons up to at least season 5, I laughed well and the wedding tape scene beats do it for her or mother simpson any day. Easily the best emotional scene of the franchise.

  • @buzzytrombone4353

    I remember watching some reviews of the movie saying how it sucked ass at being emotional and that the writers should've gone with series 4 to 8 Homer instead of Jerk Ass Homer. I wondered for the longest time how that could've worked, how Homer could've had a fallout with Moe, Lenny, Carl and Barney over who he should devote his time to more, them or Marge, and then he would do the thing with the pig shit in the lake. Then I realised that it would've made no sense to use that characterisation of Homer to show how great he is, and then have him do something completely stupid. A scene like him arguing with Moe and the guys could've been in the film to show that he has a responsibility to keep, and it could've hit more on the emotional core of the rest of the town wanting to kill the family, but at the same time, it would've taken away the core emotional focus of the film between Marge and Homer. Jerk Ass Homer fits better in this story.

    I think the "homer's yoshi tounge" scene, as you referred to, was a reference from the episode "Springfield Up," where a director returns to the town to make a documentary about the residents. There's a scene where he's interviewing homer and he's obviously an idiot, but the director showed that he at least has marge. That's when homer puts ice cream on her nose and licks it up with his tounge like that. This episode came out 5 months before the movie

    In 2007 I had just graduated from high school. How fitting, then, that this was the summer the long attempted and rumored Simpsons Movie would finally be released. Sure, it's not going to make the top of a list of things the Simpsons have brought us, but it satisfied someone who was around for about as long as the show itself (not accounting for the Tracy Ullman shorts).
    Albert Brooks is one of my favorite frequent but not permanent cast members to work on the show, so having him in that EPA role is something I was immediately on-board with. One other thing that really hit me at my core as a fan was the Marge VHS goodbye scene. As much of a slow-down for the movie as the Alaska part was and as much as we can figure Marge and the kids would be back anyway (the family is the show's name), a nakedly raw emotional read from Julie Kavner has to break your heart at least a little bit. Of course then they up the ante by having her reveal she taped over their wedding video and immediately start playing "Close to You," one of the most synonymous songs with both their relationship and the show (glad they didn't go with "You Light Up My Life"). It's absolutely the most effective scene in the movie, as you said.
    Oh, and Homer's first appearance at church was the basis for a part of a paper I did on nonverbal expression in cartoons where only movies were eligible. So yeah...Thanks, Simpsons Movie, for giving me an excuse to use Homer there.
    Edit: There was also a scene in a more recent season that really cracked me up. It had some amnesia plot w/ Mr. Burns, but when he gets his memory back he tries to think of appropriate revenge scenarios for the town of Springfield. One of those was covering it in a giant dome, but then Smithers told him that had already been done.

      I have trouble being objective about this movie because it's the only film I've ever gone to a midnight showing for. It was such a party atmosphere too. Some guy was dressed up as Duffman, and some other guy kept yelling random quotes before the previews started. They really treated it as a big event.
      I was bitter when Springfield, Ohio didn't win the Springfield contest because I would have totally driven to that premiere!

    I like that it sort of mixes newer Simpsons elements with more classical ones. For instance, Homer is jerkass Homer through most of the movie but that's so that he has a character arc and becomes more like the well intending sitcom Dad of old. Ned Flanders, especially, ditches the overbearing Christian that he often is in newer episodes in favor of the sweeter foil to Homer.

      I have to agree really. Plus Klasky Cuspo were still doing their last episodes when they supposedly toyed with that idea, and I feel like they done more solid TV to movie transitions. The Rugrats Movie genuinely felt cinematic despite still being true to the original cartoon, The Simpsons Movie....I dunno, I could never shake off the feeling it was just a beefier episode of the 'teen' years of the show (though maybe if Brad Bird directed it instead like was planned). The animation, the atmosphere, the soundtrack, even the gag-ish stakes and the characters' inability to be earnest outside maybe one scene, it all just felt the same, just a tiny bit crisper.

It was basically a modern Simpsons episode (at least modern when I stopped watching the show back in 2002) blown up for the big screen (poor to middling jokes, pointless celebrity appearances, and a completely forgettable story).

I always wondered what a Simpsons movie could have been had they done it when the show was good.

    This movie *perfectly satisfied new-to-Simpsons child me.* I got the main jokes the trailer pushed, the power went out and the family left the dome as per my expectations from the trailer, with a plan to leave for a whole new change of scenery with its new challenges, while oddly returning to Springfield's hilarious people, ultimately culminating in some quick to resolve character arcs between Homer and Bart, Flanders and Rod/Todd (damn curly hair), and Marge and Homer. Lisa and Colin kind of came and went with a Bono joke, and Milhouse was just some unlucky kid there.
    Upon seeing the Golden Age and then your Retrospective videos, I realized there's not as much food jokes, television, dream sequences, or unfortunately any of the beauty of Lionel Hits/Troy McClure and very little Bart with Skinner or Willie understandably since the plot never revolved around school, and sadly no Edna. And no referential humor which kept things light and made these characters open for me to eventually want to revisit a half decade later. This movie was great for people who had never seen basic Homer Simpson animated before, yet it missed the true character of Bart or Lisa *beyond Daredevil and Environmentalist* or Marge as someone who had a lot to let go of from Homer's crazy self in this movie. *Maggie strikes again, though.*

    • @icecreamhero2375

      I disagree 1) Its better to see it as a long episode rather than a movie. On a tv show sometimes its your week sometimes its not. For example not every Spongebob episode is going to have Patrick or Squidward in them. Not every spongebob episodes will be about Spongebob there are some about Characters like Mr. Krabs and he is more of a side character. 2) Not every epsiode has to be saterical the Simpsons has always been sometimes saterical and other times plain silly It has range.

    • @nathanpollard1223

      I couldn't bring myself to see it as a long episode. That doesn't mean it's not better to see it as 1, but yeah.
      I wouldn't have minded something different, a good movie is a good movie, although it's possible that I would've been slightly disappointed by a limited character selection, although the better it'd be the less I could mind.

    I think they could have found a way to Make Hank Scorpio Work as antagonist. Hes an extremely essentric character and just because he likes ONE person in a town doesn’t mean he may not do the same thing as Cargill. Especially with that one person being able escape. Hell in this version Scorpio could even help them escape or atleast offer before dropping the dome. Who knows what he could have to benefit from attacking Springefield or who he could be working with.

    The only 2 things I like about the Movie is that the animation is great and every voice actor does a fantastic job. But unfortunately, I found the plot predictable, all the subplots were pointless (who was that Irish kid again?) and worst of all: They made Homer annoying, unlikable and even when he does save the day in the end, I just didn't give a s**t!

    • @christiankim6864

      In my opinion homer was pretty spot on in the film. There had been several episodes where he had been even more unreliable and dim witted, and a few episodes where his family had just completely given up on him. They didn't really amp up his character much, they just put him in a specific situation where him family had to ONCE AGAIN, rely on him, and he ONCE AGAIN failed, and ONCE AGAIN his family gave up on him. And yes I mean... And how can you say it was predictable? Halfway through the movie you knew they were going to go to Alaska ? 3/4 through the movie you knew homer was going to ride a motorcycle around the dome as Bart threw the bomb out of a small circle ? Dude, the Simpsons is an episodic adventure. EVERYBODY KNEW as soon as they stepped into the theater that it was going to have a happy ending. That's like watching a Simpsons episode and saying "oh yeah I knew everything was going to be okay in the end." Uhm. Congratulations.

    I found it enjoyable but wildly inconsistent, the first third of the film is brilliant, the Alaska section is fine to take stock on the plot thus I understand the purpose of it but its later third of the film I cannot stand. I'm with you the Mr Burns bit felt like set up for something really great with people of Springfield but then becomes a wasted opportunity.
    Its the climax where things become truly awful absurd going into that far to odd cartoony vibe, (especially the sling shot, riding the dome, The Springfield Baggy Pants players being throw to their deaths from a rope). It's hard to pin it down but isn't quiet the same as Deep Space Homer's or Marge vs the Monorail cartoonyness
    also much like the Modern Simpsons, I found the references to be not funny at all, just a painful reminder of funnier moments. You see Stampy attacking the dome but it's not that funny, and all you think of its many much funnier moments from Bart gets an elephant. I think Hank Scorpio would of made a better villain and given the ending more of climax as at end there seemed to be no reason for Homer and Russ to confront each other.
    its just a sign that film had a lot of potential to explore and ultimately was too conservative for its own good. Given how popular the Simpsons was at the time and it's mark on popular culture was so wide spread, even if you'd not seen every episode in obsessive the detail you would of still enjoyed it without all the pandering to a new audience. all these concessions for a "new audience" seemed to place the needs of minority over the majority.

    I'd give it a solid 7 out of 10. One thing I really did like: it emerged during possibly the absolute nadir of the TV show. So the fact that it was decent was, at the time, a minor miracle. There are some nice bits of animation and though the overall pacing in the second half is at times flat, by the end I always feel fairly happy with what I've just watched. Nice review as always.
