the shinning is quite possibly my favourite simpsons bit ever. it’s absolutely flawless and showcases the simpsons at their best - it’s hysterical, but it’s genuinely pretty tense and cinematic at moments, and it has a pitch perfect parody that still feels true to the show. the animation is amazing as well; the scene where marge confronts homer (feelin fine!) is SO GOOD. the ending also absolutely kills me every single time. what a god-tier segment.

I remember finding Nightmare Cafeteria and Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace genuinely scary and uneasy to watch as a kid, and I still think that they are above the others when it comes to actual horror. I think they pull a lot of strength out of the unknown. As you mentioned in another video, Nightmare Cafeteria is filled with implied violence that you can't help but question, and the portrayal of the school staff is a weird balance that just works and comes off as very believable. Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace also leaves a lot to the imagination, like how and why Willie decides to go after certain people in that order and what he thinks of them as a whole. He was a good choice for the role, as with the other school staff stuff it doesn't come off as absurd and he manages to be quite threatening.

I think I find Terror at 5 and a Half Feet the scariest segment, but that's purely because the gremlin design is so well done. It fits well into a parody of the original, but also exceeds it in horror. It says something when the parody gremlin is much more terrifying than the original, though it is aided by him holding a decapitated Ned Flanders at the end. It gave my brother nightmares after we watched it, too, which also solidifies it as the scariest segment.
But The Shinning for sure is the best. But I love The Raven so much, it's a clsoe 2nd for me.

I know this was from last Halloween but I just gotta say: am I the only one who thinks the Simpsons' "All Work and No Play Makes Jack a Dull Boy" scene is scarier than the original? I mean, maybe it's just because of the unlimited potential of animation, but while writing the phrase over and over again on the typewriter is creepy, seeing the typewriter says something perfectly normal before seeing the same phrase insanely carved over and over again over every single wall, floor, and ceiling of the room is terrifying.

The Thing and I and Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace are the only two parts of classic Simpsons I remember watching as a kid, precisely because they were too scary for me. I vividly remember looking around my room at night like Bart does, thinking I *also* had an evil twin for some reason. And then with Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace it actually wasn't the dream sequences that creeped me out so badly (although I definitely remember them), but the beginning where Willie is slowly burned alive.

I think I have to give my favorite ToH gag to "Feelin' Fine". It's such an absolutely perfect sucker punch to what is arguably one of the most iconic moments of The Shining.
That being said, I also have a particular soft spot for Devil Flanders; Ned's best moments in my opinion are the rare genuine outbursts from him, so having him be the Devil is absolutely perfect role. Giving Ned the ability to dish out punishment to Homer will never not be incredibly satisfying.
I don't know if I could really pick between those two, but hey, I'm glad they're the top two episodes regardless.

I would actually switch the places of The Shinning and Nightmare Cafeteria on your list. As funny as The Shinning is, it's essentially just a walkthrough of the most famous and iconic scenes of Kubrick's Shining. That's obviously a fine approach for a Simpsons movie parody, but with that rather low level of originality, I don't think it deserves to be ranked above more creative segments like Time and Punishment, Citizen Kang or The Devil and Homer Simpson.
The main reason why I'd put Nightmare Cafeteria at number one is that it's the most horrific horror story The Simpsons has ever done. It's actually chilling in a way none of the others are - highly disturbing as a concept but not too disgusting to watch. Horror stories that are not based on any supernatural, fantasy or sci-fi elements hit the hardest because they leave the audience with an uncomfortable feeling of "This could happen for real". The only other classic TOH segment that goes into that category is The Thing and I (which I also would rank higher than you do). Nightmare Cafeteria is not the funniest segment as a whole but that's compensated well enough by the fact that it ends with a hilarious musical number that's probably one of the funniest closings to any Simpsons episode.
I also love the twisted way they subvert the "It was all just a dream" trope, with Bart waking up to a reality that's more nightmarish than his actual nightmare (Instead of getting murdered and then eaten he gets turned inside out and then apparently eaten alive by his own dog during the end credits. That's almost too dark and cruel for a Simpsons horror story - almost.)

    A few things:
I admittedly don't care for the Terror at 5 1/2 feet at all. I get what it's parodying (Actually a rare instance where I saw the original as a kid before I ever saw it on the Simpsons) but I always end up skipping it whenever it comes on. I don't hate it, but it feels like a chore to get through.
I adore the love you showed Hungry Are the Damned. That sketch was a huge point in making me a Simpsons fan as a child and made me excited for ToH segments ever since.
Flanders as the Devil may be the best re-casting of a character to a monster in the entire series. Not only is it a huge ironic twist but like you said it didn't just rest on that. This was a great take on the devil that worked perfectly for this story. An absolute highlight for me as well. The rest of it was good too. Charisma is a perfect description word.

  • @PlanetZoidstar

I never liked the "The Thing & I" segment since the plot makes zero sense.
    1. It takes YEARS for Bart & Lisa to catch on Homer takes weekly buckets of fishheads up to the attic, OR for Hugo to make nightly noises that they hear.
    2. Apparently at NO time before finding out he is a Siamese Twin did Bart notice the HUGE SCAR on his right side.
    3. Bart was completely unaffected by being separated from Hugo and was too young to remember it, but Hugo went insane as a result and knew he had a twin brother.
    4. Dr. Hibbert, a professional doctor, cannot tell left from right. And assumes that the Left twin is Evil. Even though the issue with Hugo wasn't that he was Evil, but he was Insane.
    5. They lock Bart in the attic even though he is perfectly sane, and no one notices the issue with letting Hugo live with the family with zero treatment for his insanity.
I get that it's a Treehouse of Horror story and it's not necessarily supposed to make sense, and sometimes innocent people get punished as part of the horror, but the family all come across as massively out of character.

  • @JourneyLT
    @JourneyLT 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Time for my list. I have reviewed every one of these segments and here are the results.
    20. Hungry Are the Damned - The best part was the book, sure the lighting was cool, but the segment is marred with pacing issues. It is the first TOH, so they're still getting used to the format, so you can't attack them too strongly. - Meh
    19. Bad Dream House - Again, this is similar to Hungry Are the Damned. Nice atmosphere, but the pacing was off as things happened too quick for me to properly get invested in the goings on around it. - Meh
    18. Bart's Nightmare - It was okay. It felt like a downgrade of the insane creativity given with the previous segment. This segment had the ability to go above and beyond with his premise with the creativity, but instead it went for this cringy relationship with Bart and Homer as a jack in the box. More worldbuilding and this could rank a lot higher. Favourite part was Krusty being forced to stay on air all day every day, and him losing it. Makes sense with Bart as this pretty much dictator of the world. - Meh
    17. The Thing and I - It has some atmosphere, but overall plays it too straight to be interesting. Bart having (or being) an evil twin is a nice twist, although Hugo just wasn't that scary for me. - Good
    16. The Raven - Best segment of Treehouse of Horror I. There's an unsettling atmosphere, the segment is paced much better than the previous two. Whilst Bart as the raven wasn't that interesting, James Earl Jones's voice did well for the atmosphere and got me invested into this a little more - Good
    15. Terror at 5 1/2 Feet - It's okay. I'd say it's the dark horse in the phenomenal TOH IV, but on its own I suppose it stands up. Bart knows something important that nobody else knows, and as he gets more desperate to tell everyone. The Willie fakeout is the best part. - Good
    14. Genesis Tub - I love the miniature world, but everything just happens too fast. I wish we got more scenes of the town's development into its futuristic state. Bart being attacked by the spaceships is funny, but the best part is Bart using the tub as his school project. Nice twist that I think saves it from being lower. - Good
    13. King Homer - Sure it's a good parody, but I find many parts cringeworthy. That wedding ending is honestly just stupid and wow does King Homer look awkward in a lot of these. Best joke was Homer only climbing to the second storey of a house before being too tired and he falls off. Great parody keeping in mind their characters. Also one of the best Smithers one-liners: "I think women and seamen don't mix" - Good
    12. Clown Without Pity - It's a silly lighthearted horror experience where sentient toy tries to kill a grown man. Best joke is the Frogurt, but there's also a great Patty moment where she cements herself as a lesbian, and also the doll was just turned to evil. Turning it to good made Homer pretty much make it into a slave. The ending works for what it is. - Good
    11. Dial Z for Zombies. Again, whilst starting off slow really takes a turn for the better when the zombies come around. Homer having no brain, he was a zombie? and is this the end of Zombie Shakespeare are the best jokes, although I like that moment when the zombies go back to their graves as well. - Good
    10. Attack of the 50ft Eyesores - I like the twist of the Godzilla like monsters attacking the city being advertisements, and they die if nobody looks at them. Great Otto joke in this one, and Bart being the angel and devil on the devil's shoulder are some of the best. Also Chief Wiggum shooting the high school basketball star, another great joke. The song was a weak point however. - Golden
    9. Nightmare Cafeteria - Definitely creepy. The weird down to earth nature of this one makes it even more creepy. Maybe this is even a rumour you've heard your friends say at school once, that teachers eat students. The ending when they finally come after Bart and Lisa is legitimately terrifying when they fall into that giant blender
    8. Lisa's Nightmare - This is one of the more creative TOH segments, and I think they get a lot out of the ideas they wish for. The backfirings are creative. When the Simpsons become famous, everyone starts to hate them. World peace leads to an alien invasion, and the turkey was a little dry. I really like this segment, it stands above the other early ones by far. - Golden
    7. Homer3 - I like it. It's gimmicky with the 3D absolutely, but there's some great moments here. I honestly think the 3D CGI of the characters has aged surprisingly well, better than Toy Story at least. It is suspenseful and the fear for Homer' safety is real. Also Homer in the real world is really surreal - Golden
    6. Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace - A beautiful take on the Nightmare on Elm Street formula, with Willie occupying the role of Freddie Kruger. He fits this role so well, the segment is scary as we see Martin die in front of us. However there's also some pretty funny jokes, Grampa's "Welcome to my world" and who could forget "Lousy Smarch weather, and "Do not touch Willie, good advice!" - Golden
    5. The Devil and Homer Simpson - A really nice Homer story where Homer eats a forbidden donut and goes to Hell. FLANDERS? You're the DEVIL? Ned Flanders as the Devil is perfect. Also the Donut torture is great, and Lionel Hutz in a TOH? How could I not resist? - Golden
    4. Bart Simpson's Dracula - I don't know, I really like this one. I thought most of the jokes hit well, even the Pennsylvania one. I like the scenes in Mr. Burns' castle, and the secret washer and drier, complete with the neon lit path to the "secret" Vampire pit. Grampa is great here, and that ending where they all suddenly sing Christmas songs seems to work too. Was Marge the Head Vampire all along? - Diamond
    3. The Shinning - It's legendary. It's scary, It's funny, Homer fills the role of a deranged serial killer very well with all his vices. The idea of television being the one thing that saves him is so perfect. Homer's insanity is written well, the parody is on point, There's a good joke by Willie in this too. - Diamond
    2. Citizen Kang - A phenomenal satire on politics. Even though it was aimed towards Bill Clinton vs Bob Dole, it feels more relevant in every election that comes. From start to finish, the attempts of the aliens to be politicians works well, and even after Homer reveals they are aliens, it doesn't matter it's too late, it's a two party system, you have to vote for one of us! Don't blame me, I voted for Kodos! - Diamond
    1. Time and Punishment - This is my top pick. I love this segment from start to finish. There is so much creativity in this exploration of the butterfly effect. Homer accidentally invents a time travelling toaster which leads us into an Orwellian nightmare where Ned Flanders is Big Brother, a world where Bart and Lisa are giants, the ideal world for Homer where leaves after the family can't tell him what a donut is, but after he's gone it starts raining donuts, and between each of these he grows more despondent with destroying the past in his attempts to better his fututre. It is hilarious, and incredibly creative, and my pick for the top Treehouse of Horror segment. - Diamond
Sorry to Homer's Nightmare, which misses out. It just wasn't that funny, the jokes were predictable, hey look homer robot with homer's brain acts like Homer, and we didn't get enough time with the robot for any of it to be worthwhile. Also didn't care for Mr. Burns' head attached to Homer either. - Meh

The Pennsylvania joke was done better in Animaniacs, when they were trying to go there but got lost and ended up in Transylvania instead. If you were wondering, they wanted to go to Pennsylvania because they wanted to find their parents, and since they were drawn into existence, "Mom and Dad must have been pencils."

I very much agree with many of these placements. It reminds me of how much the seasons of 5-7 were absolute fire, that even their Halloween episodes became complete bangers that stand the test of time. The only thing here I disagree with is how 'Attack of the 50ft Eyesores' is the one that didn't even make the list. Call me biased, as Treehouse of Horror VI in general (along with V) is probably my favorite of them all, but personally I would put that one a fair bit higher, I enjoy it quite a bit more than the majority of Treehouses I-III. Plus, it's got Paul Anka! You can't go wrong with his guarantee (guarantee void in Tennessee).

I think my favourite ToH segment is The Raven. It always stuck with me in a way I can't quite describe, but I adore how differently it's presented, and the narration is top-notch.
After that, my favourites are Time and Punishment (I still say "Oh, it's raining again" whenever I see it rain out the window") and Homer 3D (purely for the use of CG at the time and the live action at the end).

Personally while i dont consider Season 9 to be "classic" simpsons (especially the later half) i would consider Treehouse of Horror VIII to be the last classic Treehouse of horror and would have included it on this list. but thats just me
I'll just go with my top ten
    10. Barts Nightmare
Ottos "were gonna die arent we" Line was quoted everytime we would go get horribly wasted at the bar on a friday. The ending is a bit eh but its made up for with a strong first half. This is one of the handful of treehouse segments that averts suffering from "middle segment" syndrome. where the middle segment is often the weakest and least paid attention to segment by the writers and gets shafted on time.
    9. Homega Man
As a lover of all things post apocalyptic this is a no brainer. This episode well never not make me laugh with the "come on we just wanna eat your skin" and the spot on Chris Farley impression. Also the end where the mutants all get shot fucking is pure nightmare fuel when you freeze frame on burns corpse and how its drawn.
    8. Attack of the 50 ft eyesores
I'll admit that on a certain level you were right to shaft this one. but on a more realistic level you were wrong. This is the perfect warm up segment for a treehouse of horror. It hits the humor on the right level, with such classic lines as "he was turning into a monster" or "go kill moe" and the sound effects they used for Brockman getting ripped apart were just gruesome...just ignore the fact that Brockman comes back at the end perfectly okay
    7. Bad Dream House
The first ever Treehouse of horror segment certainly delivers in creep factor and humor. This one stays with me in memory because Teletoon would always show the clip of Homer falling from the ceiling when it advertised the Treehouse of Horror athons during the season.
    6. King Homer
I cant really say anything else about this that you havent. But i think its fucking hilarious that because they had Homer eat Shirley Temple in this segment Shirley Temple refused to appear in Last Tap Dance in Springfield.
    5. A Nightmare on Evergreen Terrace
As a Horror Fanatic and a lover of the original Nightmare on Elm Street movies (1-3) this is probably one of the most well put together parodies theyve ever done on the series. It hits every note perfectly and has some killer comedic moments too.
    4. Easy Bake Coven
I dont know why this one ranks so high on my list, but it always gets a laugh out of me. From the Caramel Cod gag to the "we were just gonna swipe their shoes" line. Its sad that this is the last time we ever saw a classic Treehouse of Horror Segment.
    3. Citizen Kang
Endlessly quotable, hilariously topical. This segment pretty much makes Treehouse of Horror VII what it is. While The Thing and I is a nice little warm up, it feels too short and constricted. Genesis Tub is a total bathroom break segment (it has its moments but im never upset when i miss it). Everytime me and my buddies drink Rum on a friday we drop the "so no one will believe your story" line. and the part where homer fucking jettisons the president and bob dole into space can sometimes cause me to laugh uncontrollably and rewind it several times. Its drawn so perfectly and is a more realistic depiction of how you would die in space than the sequence in "lifes a glitch and then you die" . It also shows that no matter what American citizens will vote in an election. A nice little satrical look at the blindness the people have in the wake of a democratic election. Rather than vote for a third party or not vote at all they'll vote for one of them even if it means they have to build a giant ray gun to aim at a planet they've never heard of. "Don't blame me. I voted for kodos". Also worth noting that the gracie films scream in this one is louder and it fucking scared the shit out of me when i was a wee lad.
    2. Dial Z For Zombies
Probably the most memorable zombie based one they've ever done. It sticks out to me as this was the first exposure to Zombies i had as a kid. Everything from the montage of zombies killing people to flanders horrid scream when he gets eaten by zombies. Also Barts attempt to do Baby's first Pop Up book reminds me of being in the 4th grade when we had to do a book report every month and when kids were doing stuff like Harry Potter or like longer young adult based novels i was phoning it in by doing Goosebumps Books and at one point my teacher fucking had the sit down with me because I just started doing comics i had read.
    1. Treehouse of Horror V as a whole
Yeah im copping out on this one. I think every segment in this is perfectly done. From The Shinning, to Time and Punishment to Nightmare Cafeteria. Its got the best laughs, best gore and that fucking gainax ending at the end. I watch this multiple times during halloween and sometimes I'll just throw it on during non-halloween season. Its not only the perfect Treehouse of Horror but its one of the best episodes of the series. If i was doing a top 10 Treehouse of horror episodes list (judging each episode as a whole rather than via individual stories) it would still be number 1. It is undisputed. Even the other two best ones (3 and 4) aren't even close to the overall quality of this one.
As for honorable mentions. Fly Vs Fly, The Thing and I, Homers Nightmare, Clown Without Pity, The Raven and Nightmare at 5 1/2 feet. And my favorite intros are the 4 one that just cuts to the fucking opening credits (I really wish they would bring back the straight opening segment that doesn't eat the entire episodes run time) and the Fox Censor one from 8.

I always wanted a Treehouse segment based on the Evil Dead in the golden age seasons... Homer with a chainsaw hand would have been hilarious!
