    The video of the snow blowing across the lake to open. I find myself hoping it will last so much longer. Your cinematography has continued to flourish. Keep sharing and teaching. You’d make a great teacher.

    I just found your channel last night with the -26 solo camping 7 days and I don't think I've ever subscribed to a channel so quickly. I've now watched over 6 of your videos and can't stop. You have definitely inspired me to get outdoors and do more camping.

    What a lovely docu-diary (that's what I call your vid's now). Taking in and absorbing the stunning beauty of the environment really is breathtaking.
    The spectrum of different shot perspectives you film (whether at altitude by drone or on the ground) brings so much to the viewer.
    Thank you for sharing another snow camping experience, it was a pleasure to watch. Cheers.

    Hey, thanks for the new video. I've been tripping in Northern Minnesota and Canada for almost 50 years now. I've never brought bear protection yet in black bear country. If it makes a person feel better then go for it I say. So far the bears and I have gotten along.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks Bob! That's interesting and I think that's quite reasonable...if a bear really wants you dead, well bear spray might not even cut it. And the other 99.999% of human-bear encounters will likely be uneventful if the human is sensible. There are frequently people here insisting that I need a gun. I disagree for black bears, but the bear spray does provide nice peace of mind for me

    • @bonpecheur4565
      @bonpecheur4565 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LostLakes I do not bring bear protection either , because all the bears I've seen in the past run away from humans . As for the people asking you to bring a gun in the wild , it must be americans most of the time . Many of them go backpacking with a handgun , for protection against predators and ...humans 🙄

    • @GrittingEagle
      @GrittingEagle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@bonpecheur4565 you are probably right it is probably mostly us Americans saying that. I carry a gun for the same reasons I have a first aid kit and a fire extinguisher in my kitchen and vehicle. In my 56 years of living I’ve never needed any of them but if the need ever arrives I’ll be prepared to deal with it. I also know that no hand gun I own will stop a bear other than the noise but that’s not why I have it.

    You should definitely using the plastic bag "trick" for sleeping. Winter bears and early spring females with cubs, looking for food could be a problem. When I lived in Alaska it was before bear spray. In winter if out we were hunting so... The canister is really so small and light April is probably time.

    Years ago, my coworkers and I developed a cold weather plan for our feet. Should temperatures get to the -30C range, I still use this plan. Antiperspirant stick or spray...or foot powder and then a pantyhose footy. Then wool socks and my trusty U.S. Army "mickey mouse" boots. It has never failed me. The boots go well with your U.S. Army Snow Shoes. Love your channel and am thankful for the content that Erin and you provide.

    I always envy you, about your great nature and the possibilities.
    When I'm on the road with the ATV, I always have a 4 x 6 meter nylon tarp with me, often a second. Has the advantage, the machine is under the tarp. In addition, I can heat something inside. Germany is a little different. Against wet feet, I take smaller sturdy waste bags, over the socks and up to the knees. Only there fixed. Warm and dry feet.

    Something to try. For keeping feet dry. I mountain bike on a fat bike in weather similar to what you are dealing with in this video. I use an antiperspirant spray to keep my feet from sweating. I usually can stay dry and warm into the single digits F. It works for many people but not all. but a cheap hack for the right person.

The practical side of me doesn't see it but I've never tried so I shouldn't close myself off to it. Hahah yeah I grew up in Toronto and spring certainly never looked like this there

    Hey John, .
    I heard you say something like what your doing isn't special or anything..(it was in an old video but just kinda felt relevant for some reason) ... I live on the central coast of California about ten mins from the beach, but what your doing sir is taking care of something I've always heard about, always wanted to go and see, but haven't gotten the chance yet. Thank you! By you sharing this part of the world with others as well as what your doing to take care of this jewel is "very" special and my heart aches. I pray something comes along and rekindles your energy I'll continue to pray for you and Arron, for your safety and that all your needs continue to be met. Safe journey friends!

    On your snowshoe trek I was wondering how you don’t get lost? It all looks the same, shoe prints could get hidden and breadcrumbs not so much. GPS perhaps?

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have offline maps on my phone (which doesn't need signal to use GPS) 🙂 But I can usually follow my own tracks back (even if it's snowing heavily like this the imprint is usually visible, what washes it out more is strong wind), and I'm always looking back and taking mental pictures in case my phone stops working (it has happened). For longer canoe trips I always have paper maps as well. But most of all, I find navigation on lakes to be much easier than almost anywhere else. There are usually islands, points, bays, etc. that can really help orient me...in thick woods, desert, plains, etc that could be a lot harder

    It would be greatly appreciated by many many campers and hikers if you could write down and display your many dehydrate recipes on breakfasts, lunches and dinners. We would all love to try a master dehydrators food meals! Why not learn from a pro! It would be greatly greatly appreciated to check them out even if you charged a small amount. I for one would pay to try for sure as I am sure many others would as well!! Another fantastic video!! Thankyou!!

      Thanks so much Brad!! The catch is I'm so far from a dehydrating pro...relatively experienced, but someone like Kevin Outdoors...he's a pro. Highly recommend his channel and book Backcountry Eats 🙂

    In North GA, you can really see them any time of year, but I never take bear spray. The black bears here will always run away backcountry, it's the popular car camping spots that they can be nuisances near, but there's only been one instance where I cut a trip short many years ago in boy scouts after chasing the same pair out of camp for the tenth time in less than a full day.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yikes! Yeah I totally agree...the wilderness bears are better behaved. There are similar problems in Ontario in popular parks like Algonquin

    Personally I don't carry bear spray, but I do have a big dog which makes a difference. Here in BC bears can be up and about all year even in the depths of winter if you live near the coast. Another great time spent with Jontario, explorer extraordinaire

    Really interesting camp setup Jon !!! I agree with you on bears. I think it is still too early. No prints observed yet. I am in the bush every day. Today’s prints (the usual)....squirrel, snowshoe hare, grouse, lynx, wolf and moose....still working on identifying other creatures like fox and marten prints. Hmmm, a “limited edition” hammock....Comic Book Guy (The Simpson’s) would be impressed !!!! Cheers from northeastern Ontario. Thanks for Kevin Outdoors. Did not know about him.

    NIce spot! Looked pretty sweet. I bet your looking forward to spring! Canoe's, open water! I know I am. I remember back when you did the Algonquin Park Video. THe reason I mention it is Because I just watched a video called the last guide which turns out to be a book as well. one Written about the last guide of Algonquin park Who has since passed away and a book written by him. Curious if you have ever read the book. I just ordered both as the video is amazing. Something I think you might be interested in. Great video as always!
