There is so much to see you need to stay awake and moving for 16 hours straight. And also stay near bathrooms and food and drink. You can spend two weeks straight and still not see everything, ghost tours at night are simply amazing. Finding the exact spot where you died and apologizing to those you killed or caused to die is a must; after taps is played at sundown, you better stay fully alert till midnight. Whispers in the night air will make your mind play tricks on you; many died so quickly and are still looking for revenge. They can tell if your a Yankee or a johnny reb as soon as you open your mouth. The vibe in the air is like no other on earth. This is not a place for children 18 and under.
@@TheHistoryUnderground Growing up I spent a lot of time in Gettysburg my grandmother lived in a Civil War home on York street in the sixties when they were doing renovations they found numerous rifles canteen's clipboard Uniform buttons and ranks it was donated to the Gettysburg chamber of Commerce. I could tell you about her house being haunted and things unexplainable I saw on the battlefield because at that time we could run the battlefield pretty much day-and-night.
This was a phenomenal episode. People can really benefit from watching this so they can learn about this important battle. I took plenty of notes for my next visit.
I have toured a number of battlefields, including Gettysburg more than once, and I find it very helpful to read a factual narrative of the battle prior to the actual visit. Then the academic story is understood ahead of time and the actual sites draw practicality to the abstract. After returning home I re-read the narrative and that ties it together by being able to visualize the actual sites while reading reabsorbing the facts and details.
♥️👍😁it’s such a beautiful and haunting place. 160 years really doesn’t seem that long. I was born 90 years after the Civil War ended. Not long at all when you’re looking at the history of this country and how young it really is. Totally enjoyed this. 👍😁
This was awesome!!! It can definitely get overwhelming for a history nerd when you get there because you want to see everything right away so you end up with no rhyme or reason sometimes to what order you see Gettysburg and it becomes a tangled mess….take it from me 😂😂😂😄
My sisters and I just went down this weekend. It was great. It rained all day Saturday, but we hit the museums. Everyone has to see the caught in the crossfire exhibit inside the new museum. We go 4 to 5 times a year. I’ve seen just about everything but that is incredible! Tim Smith was standing outside the exhibit asking everyone how it was so we had a good conversation with him. It was great!
Great tour, JD. You might like to know that I am a casualty of the Battle of Gettysburg ! When I was 11 years old, my parents took me to Gettysburg for the 100th anniversary - in 1963. I was a Civil War buff even at that young age. However, while we were touring the battlefield I developed stomach pains and was taken to the local hospital. I was diagnosed with appendicitis and operated on. My appendix was removed in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. So to this day, I claim that a part of me remained on the battlefield -LOL.
I will never get to Gettsburg or other places you tour & teach us about so I am quite thankful that you give us a glimpse of our past & the real persons who lived it. Much to learn from them.....thanks to you!😊
Was in DC in October last year for work with my brother and coworkers and we decided fairly last minute to visit Gettysburg. Your past content helped a lot with knowing where we wanted to go during just one day. Seminary and taking the tour there along with the Gettysburg Museum of History were two great stops. Toured all the major areas of the battlefield as well. So much more to see but thanks to your excellent content everyone in our group enjoyed it. Was so much more fun than we all expected.
My 3 Great Uncles were in Picket’s charge under General Petigrew in the 26th North Carolina Regiment. Granville, the oldest, was wounded 9 times during the Civil War, 3 times at Gettysburg. Miraculously, all 3 brothers survived the war. Thanks, JD for sharing this amazing history!
Years back a friend and I spent a week in Gettysburg, "we were sleeping in our car," each day we would sneak into the Pool at the Hotel that was part of the General Lee Headquarters Museum. The pool was just right, not hot and not cold. Gettysburg is in one of the most beautiful parts of the state if not the country. Thanks to JD for such a great watch on American History.
I absolutely love anything American Civil War related, but I’m from & live in Ireland, so quite expensive to get across the pond and visit ACW Battlefields. My dream is to some day get over and spend a few days around Gettysburg. I wish I lived closer!!
Excellent episode JD. My wife and I along with our kids visited there back in the late seventies. Sure could have used this back then. Thank you for all you do to make history real and not just a class to sit through.
Man. I wish I had 3 days in a row to commit. I've been there 3 times on one day go around. Long days, indeed, and usually balls hot. Might I recommend stopping in at the historic Dobbin house basement for a couple cold beers and a cheeseburger. Great food. Great atmosphere.
This is an inspired topic, and well-timed. As fascinated as I've been with all the recent WW2 releases, this re-immerses me in the exact subject and place that brought me to your excellent channel a few years ago.
Excellent video and good advice. Hired a professional guide back in 2004. Absolutely zero regrets. Scheduled one day at Gettysburg, ended up staying 3 days. Want to go back!
I went to Gettysburg September 2024 that was on my bucket list and I went to see all of these places. The most memorable place I went to was the National Cemetery when I walked through there I was so moved by being there. That was a trip I will never forget.
I haven’t been to Gettysburg since the 70’s. I remember touring the battlefield with a tape machine as our guide, seeing the sites on foot, and the food. I hope the restaurants that had all the country cooking are still there and serving all that Pennsylvania Dutch food!
Great Movie in 1992. Loved it. At the old museum there use to be an Exabition in a hall that showed the Armies Positions - 3 Days - in Lights. Must be gone. I thought that really helped explained the Battle before I journeyed to Tour. Stayed more that 3 days. So much to see. I always intended to go back again. Thanks.
Haven't been to Gettysburg in a while, but been there quite a few times. My 3rd great uncle's name is on the big memorial in Gettysburg Memorial Park, the State of Pennsylvania's Memorial, his name was Brigadier General Thomas L. Kane. He was an attorney and abolitionist from Pennsylvania, as well as raising the 62nd Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry Regiment, known as the 13th Pennsylvania Reserves, they were called the orginal "Bucktails" from Pennsylvania. Enjoyed your video very much, very well done, very formitive too..Thank you for sharing. 🙂
My family visited Gettysburg in 2003. We were on a tight budget but they had a very good self-guided tour that consisted of a CD and map. The CD played in the car while you navigated the battlefield starting over on the Chambersburg Pike where the battle opened and ending on Cemetery Hill. We took 2 days to cover the ground, not wanting to rush or miss anything. It included a fair bit about Culp's hill but it did not encompass Barlow's knoll, which I regret. But the highlight was finding the unit markers for my great-great-great-grandfather's artillery unit on Cemetery Ridge, where they fought on days 2 and 3. We also found the actual after-action reports from his unit in the archives when we visited Kennesaw Mountain, and found his name and unit in the records at Gettysburg. It was a humbling and precious touch-stone to the past, and I will never forget walking the very ground that papa Andrew walked as he fought his gun with his crewmates in the 2nd West Virginia Artillery.
I need to go back to Gettysburg. I went back in March of 2020 because we already had a vacation planned but everything started to close. So we drove up to Gettysburg from DC for the day. I had no idea how much I missed until I found this channel
Life long PA resident and was raised appreciating and respecting the hallowed ground that is Gettysburg. There's really no experience comparable to it except maybe Pearl Harbor, which I have not been fortunate to see yet. The anniversary every year is always a great time to go, but the crowds can sometimes take away from the reverence, but it's definitely something to do at least once. The 150th a while back when they re-enacted Pickett's Charge was awe inspiring. Thanks for giving this amazing place the exposure it so deserves.
If you're in Gettysburg on the 3rd of July come walk across with us starting at the Virginia Monument and up to Armistead's marker on the ridge. For the last 20+ years we've trekked across at 3:00 to remember the day.
JD as always another great video. Last time I was at Gettysburg I was there for a reenactment as a member of the 11th Mississippi Co. G Lamars Rifles. The unit who had the gruesome honour of the furthest advance of the Southern forces in the battle.
Gettysburg is my second home. My family made a pilgrimage every year from when I was 5 until I was 18. To camping with our Boyscout troop at McMillan Woods. I love this place and thank you JD for spending so much time there.
My wife and I took a trip with our kids to Gettysburg in the 1980s. I was like a kid in a candy store! I've loved studying the history of Gettysburg since I was a young teen in the 1960s. I believe that Gettysburg is a 'must see' for everyone. It's fascinating to say the least.
I remember ever year during my elementary years of going to Gettysburg with my family for the reenactments, my dad did it all throughout my early youth. Him and his buddies were in the Gettysburg movie, and I remember riding around in the car doing a nightly tour with the cassette tapes where you drove down paths designated. Haven’t been in many years
Excellent. I am going from Brazil to visit Gettysburg on April. I am fascinated by the history of the american civil war. Thank you so much for this instructions. My visit to Gettysburg will last exactly 3 days and your video will make my excursion easier.
Really nice video, I did not know the Pa. monument was open to climb up. One note and I wish someone would mark the spot but of course the Address was given near the fence in Evergreen and not at the location of the monument. Some may not agree
“What to do in 3 days” … take full battlefield tour, stop at American History Museum, buy a book somewhere…. Have wings at blue and gray tavern …. Also… book at 1863 hotel:.. it’s a good central point for everything …. Also… take photos at little round top at sunset .. absolutely beautiful….btw … JD thank you for showing a great amount of love appreciation for such a great spot in American History
Thank you so much for this....my wife and I want to go to Gettysburg but it seemed so overwhelming.....but you gave a wonderful baseline to start out with!!!
I remember visiting the wheat field some years ago and as I was walking I felt a distinct emotion of tension of some kind. Very faintly but a definite change of feeling.
My favorite comment is when you say "don't do it" to relaxation. The BEST advice. The battlefield is absolutely at its best in the first 2 to 3 hours of daylight before crowds appear. Also, if you are busy dining during sunset, you missed something. Gettysburg's east/west orientation provides great sunset views.
If you get the local Scouts pamphlet to achieve the Gettysburg Patch you will do the Johnny Reb trail 10 miles and the Biily Yank Trail, 11 miles, historic town trail, cemetery and museum. Takes 4 days of walking and you will see almost all the markers with prompts to act out some of the battle. I have never seen any Scouts talk at the end of walking Pickets charge. There are 5 markers for Vermont, one at the angle where they smashed the end of pickets charge. Do the towers and visit Eisenhower place. If you drive this place you will not get 1/4 of what happened
Thank you JD. I wish I could spend 3 days in Gettysburg. But I appreciate you showing this video. There is so much history there. I worked at Colonial Williamsburg which has a ton of history .
Yes it is. However I was working at the Craft House in the basement fulfilling customer orders. Did get to walk the historic area early in the morning before the crowds arrived.
My dad took me up there in the early 90's. Unfortunately that coincided with a snow storm that dumped feet of snow and couldn't go see anything. Would love to go back some day.
First time I have ever heard anyone be positive about O. Howard. Not that anyone could have held the Union right flank on the first day, but he didn’t fare well in other places during the war.
@@TheHistoryUnderground and I like that you don’t just follow the sheep on Howard and others. Love your stuff. Headed to Germany in a couple of weeks. Your material has opened my eyes on what I am hoping to see.
This is an excellent video! Thanks so much for doing this. Thanks also for explaining that the town of Gettysburg itself was a part of the battlefield. As a historian dedicated to preserving and sharing the incredible stories of the local people who experienced the Battle of Gettysburg, not only as soldiers, but as civilians as well, I was very glad to see that you encouraged people to explore the town. In future videos, you may wish to suggest that people take a walking tour of the town of Gettysburg to learn some of these stories. I admit my prejudice since I do living history walking tours of Gettysburg. Thanks also for mentioning the Adams County Historical Society so prominently. Since I am on one of that organization’s committees and chair the History Consortium on behalf of the Adams County Historical Society, I am so happy that you suggested folks visit the wonderful new museum. Keep up the great work!
My wife and I have visited the Gettysburg battlefield every year since 2005 and on occasions twice in a single year. ( it's a seven hour drive from our home ) It still amazes me even after all those trips we learn some thing new every time. Recommend: visitor center, licensed battlefield guides it's all amazing and we continue plan trips every year.
I’ve been following your channel from the beginning, now I understand why, great intro’s, presentation and overall feels of the subject matter. I wish you great success JD 😅
A day off and a new THU video?! Must be my lucky day! Thanks for the guide to Gettysburg. Haven't been there since I was a teen and really enjoyed seeing some of the spots again.
went twice in 2019...1st time was for a week as my late birthday present(January but went in April)my father taught me the history of the Civil War and even through he died in 1996...i never felt closer to him than that trip...i could "feel"him talking to me while i toured the battlefield...took so many pictures that i will always cherish...because due to his health...he never made it there when i was growing up..,,2nd time was in October as the wife and i stopped for 2 days on our yearly trip to Connecticut..she loved the historical aspect of the town and even agreed that she was impressed by the battlefield and its monuments..especially after visiting the cyclorama at the visitors center
This was an absolutely incredible video JD! I mean, you put out extremely great videos all the time, but man this one is special! Thank you for all you do for us! And for history...
Great video! This will be our 5th year visiting on the anniversary. We usually start at the Visitor Center, but I like how you put it at the end. We have utilized the auto tour as a cheaper alternative to the battlefield guides, but would love to experience having a guide one year.
Thanks! The main reason that I put the visitor center at the end is because of the Cyclorama. I think that you can appreciate it more after spending time on the battlefield.
Thanks, JD. Outstanding video. I've wanted to head to Gettysburg but have been overwhelmed with not knowing exactly where to go. Would love an episode like this for DC too. I've been there but it's been a long time and would be very helpful. Probably the same deal with Normandy. Thanks much!
When you do your town walk, don't forget the Coster Avenue mural on Stevens Street and the Sgt Amos Humiston memorial on N. Stratton. The mural is fantastic and the Humiston memorial is a sad personal story. Great video, thanks for sharing.
Outstanding JD! I visited Gettysburg over 15 years ago and wished I had something like this then! Well it might of been a brochure back then ;-) I missed a lot and can't wait to bring my wife and grandkids here! I always tell you in my comments thank you for keeping history alive! and I always will, you do such a great job! Love your work! Sharing this for others to get this great information!
Great episode as usual! We were there in August 2021 during the height of the pandemic. Wish we saw this before our 3 day trip! Still had a great time.
My husband and I make the trip to Gettysburg every couple years and never fail to learn something new every time. We’re headed their Memorial Day week this year for 8 days, I agree with everyone of your recommendations. Gonna miss our Little Round Top sunsets.
I absolutely love and look forward to seeing your videos. I know you've probably heard this a million times, but I have to say THANK YOU for doing these videos. In an age that in my opinion our history is being erased, you and those like you teach even the most unsavory of our history so it's not forgotten. Please keep up the amazing work you do.

Thank you JD. I wish I could spend 3 days in Gettysburg. But I appreciate you showing this video.
There is so much history there. I worked at Colonial Williamsburg which has a ton of history .
Great place!
Yes it is. However I was working at the Craft House in the basement fulfilling customer orders. Did get to walk the historic area early in the morning before the crowds arrived.
Thank you for this video mate. My bucket list is to visit Gettysburg one day. That was an excellent presentation. Cheers.
@@davidnelson7786 thanks!
My dad took me up there in the early 90's. Unfortunately that coincided with a snow storm that dumped feet of snow and couldn't go see anything. Would love to go back some day.
Stopped in on the GMH yesterday during our trip to Gettysburg. Really cool place.
First time I have ever heard anyone be positive about O. Howard. Not that anyone could have held the Union right flank on the first day, but he didn’t fare well in other places during the war.
He does well at Gettysburg and performs well later in the war. I like that he takes some pretty significant hits and keeps coming back.
@@TheHistoryUnderground and I like that you don’t just follow the sheep on Howard and others. Love your stuff. Headed to Germany in a couple of weeks. Your material has opened my eyes on what I am hoping to see.
I plan on being out there one of the days at least of the anniversary. I'll be looking for yous
Got a few places that I'll be during the anniversary. Be watching for some details soon. Hope to see you there!
@@TheHistoryUnderground awesome I'm excited!
Well I think I just found my itinerary for my next trip to the East Coast. Wonderful tips and recommendations! Thank you!
Awesome!
👊🏻
My wife and I have visited the Gettysburg battlefield every year since 2005 and on occasions twice in a single year. ( it's a seven hour drive from our home ) It still amazes me even after all those trips we learn some thing new every time. Recommend: visitor center, licensed battlefield guides it's all amazing and we continue plan trips every year.
I’ve been following your channel from the beginning, now I understand why, great intro’s, presentation and overall feels of the subject matter. I wish you great success JD 😅
🙏🏼
Went for a day last Aug. Took the bus tour, saved alot of aimless wandering. However, still so much unseen.
Thanks!
Thanks,
JD. Outstanding video. I've wanted to head to Gettysburg but have been overwhelmed with not knowing exactly where to go. Would love an episode like this for DC too. I've been there but it's been a long time and would be very helpful. Probably the same deal with Normandy. Thanks much!
I’ve got one for DC but probably need to update it.
When you do your town walk, don't forget the Coster Avenue mural on Stevens Street and the Sgt Amos Humiston memorial on N. Stratton. The mural is fantastic and the Humiston memorial is a sad personal story.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
JD Fantastic video thank you & Gettysburg is a beautiful place I would love to go there one day and Greetings from United Kingdom 🇬🇧
👍🏻
Outstanding JD! I visited Gettysburg over 15 years ago and wished I had something like this then! Well it might of been a brochure back then ;-) I missed a lot and can't wait to bring my wife and grandkids here! I always tell you in my comments thank you for keeping history alive! and I always will, you do such a great job! Love your work! Sharing this for others to get this great information!
Glad that it's helpful!
Never seen that movie but gonna find it on dvd now.
Great episode as usual! We were there in August 2021 during the height of the pandemic. Wish we saw this before our 3 day trip! Still had a great time.
Awesome episode! Definitely on our "to visit" list for next year. Thank you.
👍🏻
JD one of your best videos for sure in my opinion. Great history lesson for all. Fantastic
Thanks! Appreciate that.
Thanks JD God bless you brother!!✌️🇺🇲
👍🏻
Awesome tour by this historical place, santified with the blood of many brave people of both bands..
My husband and I make the trip to Gettysburg every couple years and never fail to learn something new every time. We’re headed their Memorial Day week this year for 8 days, I agree with everyone of your recommendations. Gonna miss our Little Round Top sunsets.
Absolutely will use this video to plan our trip to Gettysburg! Great video!
Awesome!
JD and JF!! You’re both the best!!!
Thanks, JD.. heading to Gettysburg for the first time in October. Hope to see everything on the video and perhaps say hello to Erik as well.
Bravo JD!! 👏. Thanks
Awesome! As a Gettysburg local I would suggest also East cavalry field and Benners hill. Those places do not get the visits that they deserve
Definitely.
@@TheHistoryUnderground cant wait to hear details about the 160th meet up, I'm actually surprised I havent run into yet around town haha
Appreciate that more than you know.
Sweet! I really like Jared’s channel too! Love the collaborations
Big fan of Reel History.
