Just happy to see these buildings still exist and hopefully always will.
I live right outside of Gettysburg and they care about those buildings and make sure they are well taken care of so they will be here for a long time. The historical buildings are actually protected buildings so they are not going anywhere.
So if you are someone who lives in one of them there are very very strict rules on what you can and cannot do in that house or to it as a resident.

I love the name and have eaten there, it's really good. Funny he mentioned sweet tea. When I was there I asked for it and they had no idea what I meant. I figured Sweet tea must be a Southern thing. Nice to know they have it now😊

Get tips JD! May I also suggest:
-For a night-cap, The Reliance Mine Saloon. A lot of people hanging out there are very well versed on the Battle. And around 10 pm on certain nights William Frassanito pops in and holds court; he'd be glad to sit down with you and chat a spell (especially if you buy him a beer).
-O'Rorke's for classic pub grub
-And if you bring you four-legged family member, the Quality Inn on Von Steinwehr ave is pet friendly.
I went to Gettysburg last August (2022). Did a 3 day visit. So much to see and take in. Especially those like myself that didn't study the entire 3 day battle. But get the general idea. Gettysburg is such a great little town. The residents are awesome.
I focus on the general and important areas of the battlefields. Little Round Top & Devils Den was under renovations. And walked through Triangle Field, didn't hear any voices nor get touched.
Stayed at Days Inn and ate at KFC and McDonald's.
Gettysburg is great place for Civil War historians and enthusiasts.
I just wanted to go back into time and walk the battlefields.

Welp. They say that timing is everything. My husband and I just got home a few days ago from spending 3 days in Gettysburg. (This was our second visit, but our first visit about 12 years ago was with our young children. We wanted to see it without having to hear, "Another monument?" again.) Our first day back I found your previous video on "what to do in 3 days in Gettysburg" and watched to see what we missed. I'm happy to report we had visited most of the spots you covered, and we DID hire a battlefield guide (which I highly recommend, great experience). Now i've found this video and found a couple restaurants I wish we had visited. We did get some of Mr. G's amazing ice cream -- so good! Lol! Great videos, as usual. Thank you, JD.
Love Gettysburg. I grew up in nearby Chambersburg so we spent much time visiting Gettysburg as a child. I never get tired or bored with this history.

Two of my favorite places to eat when we are in Gettysburg is the Lincoln Diner, which is right beside the railroad tracks. Their home made pies are incredible. The other place is O'Rorke's Family Eatery, really good burgers!
When I go to Gettysburg I stay at the 3 crowns right across from the National Cemetery. The first time I stayed was strictly because of budget but when I got in my room it was like an Americana time capsule. Luke something out of the 50's nostalgia. I felt like I was 10 again on a fishing trip with my dad.

Mr. Ed's in Orratanna is a fun stop for vintage candy, exceptional fudge, and the elephant museum, and Hollabaugh Bros farm market in Biglerville has great fruit, slushes and homemade ice cream.
Three days ????? It would take three weeks ...... JD and team, thanks for going back to Gettysburg and keeping American History alive. Not sleep in your car, nice touch. "LOL"

I worked at the park as a Park Ranger back in the late 70s. Have visited Gettysburg since I first went at age 11. Must have been well over 100 times by now. Always something new to explore there.

Don't forget to go see where Jeanie Wade was shot ! She was the only Civillian killed in the battle ! The house totally intact inside and outside !

This was a very cool idea. Your channel has become a staple in things I watch, and you make us feel as if we are right there along side you seeing these things that otherwise we may not be able to. I share your love of History, especially military history, especially everything Easy Co., but now I've become like a sponge in all these other areas and learning more than I ever did in HS or College, and even 10yrs in the US Military.

I'm so glad that the film at the heritage center was mentioned! Its great and I tell everyone that visits to go see it before going out on the field. They can help you book tours there as well, highly recommend that museum!
Such a great list JD, agree with you 100%. A few other places in Gettysburg I like that you might like too, is the The Christmas Haus at 13 Baltimore St, The David Wills House near the town square, and the old train station and museum.

was over from Wales and visted. Stayed at the quality Inn which was clean and comfy, Reliance Mine Inn was good fun for a drink but I think our fave was Appalachian Brewing Company mainly for the food and we could fall in and out of the hotel from there . Still fave bar from the trip was "Happy Endings" in Fredricksburg followed closely by the "Penny Lane pub" in Richmond....essentially two weeks of history, travel and day drinking for me and the wife

the command center for the Secret Service at Eisenhowser's Farm is a hoot...6 old tvs and the story of the cows' ear tags setting off the fence alarms for several nights until it was figured out

From my research on my family on ancestry, my g-g-grandfather was in the battle of Gettysburg and received a head wound on Culp's hill and ended up as a prisoner of war and listed as in "the hands of the enemy". Sent to a field hospital and then on to Ft McHenry for remainder of the war. He was in the Alabama 6th regiment infantry, Co I. Considering the sanitary conditions, surprising he survived his injury. Have no idea how serious it was, but even a "minor" injury in those conditions could end up life threatening. Then survive being a prisoner at that time. No wonder I never heard about this from family. Today, he would probably have ptsd.

stayed at two of the places you mentioned. Farnsworth has tons of ghost stories, but we did not experience anything outside of relaxation and a good meal

JD another great Gettysburg video. I live about 20 miles due west of Gettysburg in a town called Fayetteville. There is a great Civil War Show every year the last weekend in October you show try to attend. Love living on this area as I collect Civil War Cavalry related items.

Loved the food we had as a family several decades ago, they were all set up as old time inns with Pennsylvania Dutch cooking. I would like to think they still have that flavor there.

Battlefield B&B is awesome!! I got married there 3 years ago. Highly recommend, they do a living history lesson the weekends that is awesome.
I have been to Gettysburg over 40 times since my first visit in 1984 ! I can't get enough of the historic place! Being a Military Historian, Reenactor and Army Veteran who had relatives who fought in the battle I have been obsessed with the place! There is always something new to see and learn! I plan on moving there this year permanantly!

My guide was Truman, and I had a great meal at the Blue and Gray Pub. There’s also a BBQ place south of East Cemetery Hill by the Comfort inn that had the best briquette I’ve ever had.

I could hope to spend a week walking the battlefield at Gettysburg. This is a bucket list destination i would like to see. Another is Currahee mountain. Ill walk that hill someday.
I took day trip up there for 4 separate days. It got me hooked on history. The food there in all the restaurants are great!

We stayed at a Motel in Hanover while visiting Gettysburg. The bonus was it was across the street from Snyders of Hanover pretzel factory so we got some very fresh pretzels.

once again, a superb video on the history of Gettysburg, it really makes you want to come and see all these traces of the past, one question however, what do you think Americans, of all these people who unbolt your statues and by the same token your history?? It's very unfortunate, isn't it? From France.
I think that it's despicable that statues are torn down. When it comes to history, you have to take it all - the good, the bad, and the ugly - otherwise you will never learn.

Had the privilege to stay at the Antrim 1844 hotel. Had a very “interesting” visit while I was there one day. Great property but spendy 👍👍

I recommend staying in B&B’s while in Gettysburg. Sure it’s a bit more, but talking with other visitors especially at breakfast time is part of the charm. I usually stay at The Doubleday Inn and absolutely love it.
A goofy place to go if you have little ones is Civil War Tales at the Homestead Diorama Museum. It has little dioramas of major battles. The catch is all of the soldiers are little clay cats.

It took us five trips to Gettysburg to finally get to try Hunt’s Battlefield Fries and Cafe. Best Philly Cheesesteak outside of Philadelphia!
Family of mine were killed by yankees at Gettysburg and the surrounding area. It's good to see that the history isn't being forgotten.
My youngest loves Gettysburg and the story of Jennie Wade.
I love that there are photographers that will take your picture with a tin type camera from 1863. My picture that's pinned on here was taken with a group of us in the Virginia National Guard that flew up to Gettysburg for the afternoon.

54th New York Infantry Marker at Barlows Knoll. Pass the corn field is a small wood line. In the woods about 20 yards lies the marker.
Neill Lane on the far right of the Union line.
And the 1st Virginia Artillery, Hupps Battery, Salem Virginia Artillery across the railroad tracks from Lee's HQ. All of these are on a Battlefield Monument map or Google Maps.

Any trip to Gettysburg is not complete with out a visit to the Horse Soldier and The Regimantal Quartermaster!
Great folks there.
The Drummer Boy downtown is a bit higher end, but has some cool items. There is also The Historian- outstanding historical reference book store.
You will be out of money after these, but have great books, and maybe a sword or two.
I'll be spending a whole day at the Gettysburg Museum of History. and yes, I will be spending my nights in my minivan, saving 3K per month, at least.

Restaurant I like is the Blue & Grey
You really do go the extra mile. I expected slightly more obscure historical sites, important skirmishes, plaques to less well known key figures. I never expected the fanciest hotel, the best burger and most importantly the top ice cream in Gettysburg, or perhaps Gettisburg. This kind of stuff is what sets you apart in the historical TH-cam space.

Before I start watching and paused the video, I'm saying it now, Food101 and the Blue and Gray should be places mentioned to get grub.
Going in July like we do every year: In this economy, most of the places you listed are very expensive. I usually stay at the Gettysburg 1863 Inn / Loved Gettysburger / Love the Dobbin House / Usually try to go to both Irish places: GarryOwen Pub and Ororke's / Haven't seen Ike's house yet (just found out he was a Jehovah's Witness) but we will be seeing it this year / Have been in the Heritage Center / Gonna go to the new building "Beyond the Battlefield" as well.

I’m from the UK and visiting Gettysburg is definitely on my bucket list along with the memorial site for flight 93 - not sure the distance between the areas - being from the UK we are not used to wrapping our heads around the larger distances even within the same state. I was wondering and perhaps any local people reading this could advise as to the closest airport I could fly into direct or maybe I would have to get a connecting flight. Many thanks.
Hi Pale! Pennsylvania is a lot bigger than you'd think! I'd love to help you. I'm located in Pittsburgh (western PA) and grew up in central PA. Gettysburg and the Flight 93 Memorial are about 2.5 hours away from each other, both are located on the "Lincoln Highway" which is also known as Rt 30. You will need a car when you come here, public transportation is not going to be your friend. What else is on your bucket list? That might help me direct you on where to fly in.
@@jaeves007 Thanks for the information. I’m open to suggestions at this stage. Working towards this being a trip to do when I retire, fingers crossed in the next two/three years. Definitely have an interest in your Civil War history, stoked by JD and Chris at VTH. Not that interested in visiting major cities, as I don’t think they necessarily represent the true nature of a Country (eg..London is not necessarily representative of the UK ).
@@palerider4015 oh, this will be fun. I'll start thinking of some things and get back to you. My instinct is to tell you to fly in and out of Dulles (near Washington DC). You could do a big circle driving from place to place and see so much. Pull up a map and you'll see what I mean. I'll get back to you :)

Actually, I think Dulles Airport (IAD) would be the closest airport for you. It's in Northern Virginia and just west of DC. South of Gettysburg and would be an easy straight shot north. Depending on traffic, about a 2 hour drive. It's probably going to be closer than either Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. Although, check out prices and also consider how you would get to Gettysburg once here. All three airports will end up being similar distances, so any difference wouldn't be a big deal if you can get a much better deal into one over the others. You'll probably need to rent a car though to get to Gettysburg, so practice driving on the 'wrong side of the road.' 🚙
Baltimore (BWI) would also be another option to consider, although I think the traffic in and around Baltimore just to get to Gettysburg would be more of a nuisance. Supposedly a shorter trip, but I seriously question that. It's a little further north, but what you gain north, you lose by it being further east.
Another thing to consider is that you are more likely able to get a direct flight into Dulles (IAD) from London or Manchester.

@Don Hurst, When we pass, our souls go to heaven. We go home to Jesus. When we go home to be with Jesus, why would our soul want to come back here. We might see demons but they are not ghosts.
Take a ride to Nazareth, not that far from Gettysburg. Take a tour of the Martin Guitar factory. I often wounder how or what the few civil war veterans thought about WW1 or WW2. I believe there was 1 or 2 vets left with the Korean War going on.
