In today's video Darker Side from Super Mario Odyssey, Special 8 Crown from Super Mario 3D Land, Grandmaster Galaxy from Super Mario Galaxy 2, and Champion's Road from Super Mario 3D World battle it out for the top hardest level in the 3D Mario games. The Perfect Run is an absolute crime against humanity. The Galaxy was already plenty difficult, and then they make the traps and obstacles MORE unforgiving and expect us to get through without getting hit a single time?! What the heck were they thinking?! Took me ten years to get that blasted Star, and I only got it because I asked my older sister to use the Co-Star Luma! Stupid cheating Hammer Bros… I had no choice but to cheat back.

      So true.
The normal version of this level has 3 health, which don't really mean a lot, because getting hit still results in death in a lot of cases (getting hit during Yoshi section and Cloud section guarantees death, getting hit at the flip flaps and shrinking platforms section or the hammer bros section still has a high chance of death)
It's the checkpoints at section 3 and 5 (of 6 total sections) that make all the difference to me.

@@torinoconnor4296 I can breeze through Champions Road without getting touched, easy. The 1 hitpoint thing makes it hard. But what also makes it hard is the ending of the level. 5 hammer bros and 3 boomerang bros, the boomerang bros being the ones you need to defeat, and the hammer bros having almost perfect aim and a large range on their throw, alone that makes it really tough. Then you got fast electric fences another section, ring beamers that have spikes and emit electric waves in a circle that you have to jump over or you die, while the ground below you starts to disappear when you touch it, or swaps to another location when you spin, while also avoiding octopuses that shoot fireballs and coconuts, but mainly fireballs, and having weird floaty jumps that you don't normally have in another section, a maze of electric fences that you must create your own platforms in or you die, but you only get 3 platforms every so often and the platforms you make go away very quickly in another section, asection where you have to use yoshi to get across a giant gap while avoiding homing bullet bills, choppas, and the giant gaping void below you, then in another section you have to avoid sentry beams that shoot a lazer at you that you have to constantly avoid or else it catches you and kills you, while having to run over switch panels to activate them all so you can progress, and it's just a lot to handle. It hurts to think about. 3D World is jump across small gaps, wait on a platform, avoid easy-to-dodge fireballs from fire bros, run over small gaps, avoiding charging chucks, kill 3 magikoopas while the ground falls below you, but that ground spawns back, then time your jumps to some fast beat blocks, then avoid the slowest swinging spikes in existence and a couple of fuzzies on some moving platforms, then walljump up a wall with some spiked ants blocking the way, using the back of the ants to bounce on to get up quicker, then jump on some piranha creepers to gain enough height to get up onto the next platform, while having no risk of falling off and dying by the way, then swim through some water, avoiding some spikes that sometimes move, then running on some dash panels that make you constantly sprint while jumping to avoid plasma waves from ring burners and collecting 5 key coins to open a warp box to the end of the level. Does that sound hard? It really isn't that bad. Even if you weren't able to take damage, it still wouldn't stand a chance against The Perfect Run, because I typically don't take damage during the level in Champions Road. Sure, I can see playing as small Toad being almost impossible once you get to the beat block section, but his small jumps are actually nice for getting up the large staircase of blocks, along with his agility. Plus, The Perfect Run HAS power-ups, they just don't increase your health. They give you an ability that makes the level easier (besides the cloud flower, which actually makes timing your jumps when avoiding the ring beamers harder because your jumps are floaty). Power-ups in 3D World give you special abilities AND an extra hit.

7:41 You can't really divorce the level design from the player character's attributes (i.e. health) when assessing difficulty. There are plenty of "difficult" levels in games that would become trivially easy if you had gobs of health. Likewise, many "easy" levels would become quite difficult if you were to die in one hit. The ultimate test star and the perfect run star should be judged independently, even though they share the same level design. It seemed like people assumed you meant the perfect run, but you really should have made that clear.

    • @N12015
      @N12015 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

And even then the ultimate test star is very difficult, less than champion road but also more than 3D land and specially darker side of the moon.
Also, don't even pretend that champion road depending is much more difficult depending on the character you selected, and you can take breaks between characters as well.

The Perfect Run/GrandMaster Galaxy is the hardest and here’s why:
-Must best EVERY LEVEL/WORLD in the game
-And After you beat every LEVEL/WORLD u have to collect green stars 😡
-Once You Do that you have to beat EVERY level in “WORLD S” which has the HARDEST levels in the game and collect green starts for it.
    -Collect EVERY Comet Medal
    -Collect 9999 Starbits 😳
-You have to beat GrandMaster Galaxy in order unlock The Perfect Run which is already hard enough
-Once you beat GrandMaster u FINALLY unlock the Perfect Run which is Grand Master Galaxy but on steroids.
-You can’t take ANY damage or you’ll die and have to start ALL OVER
-And unlike all these other level u get NO POWER-UPS, u only get cloud flower which is used as a level mechanic instead of helping u,
-In Odyssey u get 6-Life Power-Ups, In 3D WORLD/Land U get Power-ups like Tanooki, Boomerang, Star Power, Fireflower, and more, Which will actually help you.

Another factor making The Perfect Run more difficult is that, since you're unable to take damage, you're stuck with the Cloud Flower for the whole level from the moment you pick it up. Its jumps are a lot floatier and the mid-air spin doesn't give you as much height as usual, meaning jumps are committed to further in advance and with less opportunity for correction (once the cloud platforms run out). This combined with the fact that each individual powerup doesn't show up all that often, resulting in the player being far less practiced with the powerup than without it, makes the flip panel and Hammer & Boomerang Bro sections even tougher than they seem on paper.

    @Quirino26 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Now that I've played all the levels mentioned, Champion's Road is the hardest for me by far. The Perfect Run is not easy by any means, but very learnable. The first 2 rooms should not be any problem after a few tries. The 3rd room was hard at first, but was very learnable. Eventually I just knew where to (long) jump/spin etc. The electrical wire room also wasn't very hard for me, as long as I didn't try to rush it. The hammer bros room was a bit tricky, but I managed to defeat the boomerang bros on my 2nd attempt (just wait until their boomerangs have returned and you'll have a window to spin them). Overall it maybe took an hour total.
Now Champion's Road on the other hand... The big problem is the length. I think all rooms are pretty hard, but especially the last section with the boost panels is brutal. It's also way less learnable than the harder rooms in Perfect Run, because there's so much happening at once, so much you have to dodge and since it's later on in a longer level, you have less opportunities to practice it. I don't remember how many hours I spent total, but it took me 3 days with several hours each day. So my vote easily goes to Champion's Road.

I see these final levels as the game's celebration of your triumph over it. If you've made it this far, endured everything the game has thrown at you, the game is confident you can handle anything it can possibly throw at you. So it throws everything at you at once, because it knows you can handle it.

I don’t really remember how hard Darker Side was, since you got all those healing opportunities. And the 3D Land level I never played, since I didn’t have the drive to 100% that one.
As for the other two: I’d say Champion’s Road is the most difficult by default. Grandmaster Galaxy actually wasn’t too hard in the normal run. But the Daredevil one was where the real challenge was.
But for Champion’s Road; it was brutal no matter what. Even with the optimal character/item combinations, it was still a major challenge.

  • @MarioLandscape
    @MarioLandscape 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

I find Champion's Road fairly easy. I have practiced it a lot. Doing it with Toad, without power-ups, is the only actual challenge I find from it. His short jumps make it extremely difficult to make the jumps from the dash panels before the key-coin section.
From a completionist point a view, doing the level with each character isn't too difficult when you use power-ups.
No damage isn't even that hard either. There's only a couple sections when you actually have to focus on not taking damage. If you start small, your hitbox is lower, making some sections easier.
The Perfect Run of Grandmaster Galaxy is actually difficult.
The controls are more limited, and the sections are more difficult than Champion's Road.
Especially the last section. The level is longer, and it is a requirement to not take damage.
The Darker Side is also difficult. While it does reward you with extra health, it makes the level longer and harder. The section right before the Bowser part is extremely hard. No damage for that stage requires extreme skill, and precision.
The Special 8-Crown of 3D Land is difficult, but not as much as the others. Without the tanooki suit, it does become harder. Doing it no damage is fairly hard, since there are 2 bosses in the same room, and there are some difficult parts.
The lily pad stage from Sunshine is more annoying than difficult. If you miss a red coin (which is very easy to do so), you can try to re-grab it by standing on the edge, and using fludd to barely suspend you above the poisonous water. It is difficult to do this. The game makes it very difficult to get many lives, so if you game over, you have to redo the long, tedious ride to the island on Yoshi.
The pachinko machine stage was a bit tedious, but I did not find it difficult. Fludd helps you to get into each hole, and you have to be unlucky to die. Overall, not too hard. It is kind of tedious to get back to it if you game over. But on no scale comparable to the lily pad.
The chuckster level isn't too hard if you know how the gimmick works. The red coin challenge in the level is annoying, and definitely makes it harder from a completionist point of view.
Ranking these 7 in terms of difficulty.
    7 - Pachinko Machine
    6 - Chuckster level
    5 - Lily Pad stage
    4 - Special 8-Crown from 3D Land
    3 - Champion's Road
    2 - Darker Side
    1 - Grandmaster Galaxy

@@key81885 I aggree, as while The Perfect Run only allows you to take one hit, its more the punishment then anything else, and its shorter then Champion's Road too and slightly easier to predict. While Champion's Road has gimmicks far crazier then The Perfect Run and its slightly longer too, and the absolute most painful part is the dash panel part which is very hard to predict.

      @@danmario246.
I can see your point, but it isn't too hard to learn the patterns of the lasers, which then can make it pretty easy to predict when you need to jump.
Apart from that, we just find different things harder. Everyone finds difficulty in a place where someone finds none.

I can't really remember most Mario levels I've played, if I ever replay the 3D-Series I'll make sure to rank them though. Sounds fun.
I didn't catch the vote but since I've played all of the final levels (exlcuding 3D-Land), here's my ranking:
    1. Grandmaster Galaxy
    2. Champions Road
    3. Darker Side
Darker Side's the easiest, even without the free health packs. The first time around I did struggle, however it did teach me how to use the cappy-jump more efficiently and made me figure out a few other tricks that made subsequent playthroughs far easier. On top of that it's my favourite 3D-Mario and I really got into all the movement tech which made me a better player overall. I don't really mind it being the easiest. In my opinion odyssey shines when you are given the ability to make your own challenge, which Darker Side is pretty good for (e.g. beat it without using cappy, beat it with the fewest captures possible etc.).
Champions Road is decently challenging. It did take me some time to beat it, once I figured out the patterns though it was quite easy. The only section I remember struggling on a bunch was the finale one with the running pads and key-coins.
First place on my list is Grandmaster Galaxy. Despite everyone I know saying it's hard, I really don't think it is. I was considering putting it below Champions Road, because I remember beating the normal stage pretty easily when I was younger. However, since I've beaten both Champions Road without Power-Ups and the Perfect Run, I think I can say that Grandmaster is harder. Although if I were to rank the levels normally I do think that Champions Road is slightly harder.
Due to my years of experience with the games the levels all feel pretty easy to me. Wish I could play them all again for the first time though.

Also, the pachinko machine is one of the EASIEST shines in the sunshine. All you have to do is know what you're doing and how you are going to launch Mario. That mission has no place in the conversation with the rest of these missions.
As well, the chuckya mission is just annoying, but is also irrelevant to these conversations. Sure the red coin version takes a bit more patience, but neither one is terrible.

What makes The perfect Run so hard.
    1) you only have one life without checkpoints. Most of the other levels give ya multiple lives and your allowed to bring power us in to make your life easier.
    2) Champion Road only needs to be completed twice cause you can just get 4 people too play. (If ya say I gets too chaotic. Just put some of the players into bubbles.)
    3) some parts of the levels can be skiped easy. (Mainly darker side)

I think champion's road is 10x harder than the perfect run I had to hire my brother to help me beat it and it still took a long time, whereas the perfect run took me about an hour. Also, I feel that the controls of Galaxy are much more free when compared to 3d world

I played all of these stages back to back with the most basic forms of movement required to beat it (just meaning I used the captures in odyssey and the cloud flower and yoshi in galaxy 2) a few months ago just to try and get a generally unbiased test, and the order of difficulty was the exact same as it was here

In my experience, most of these challenges took me hours to beat. Beating Grandmaster Galaxy and the Perfect Run was more on the scale of days. It's the no-hit nature that influences it for me as you mentioned, so I have to wonder how long something like Darker Side would have taken me if I had to play it with 1 health.

Me and my sister love playing Super Mario 3D world and Super Mario World together, and we both agree that Champion's Road and Tubular are the two most difficult levels from both games. While I've only beaten Tubular once in my life, neither of us were able to take down Champion's Road and only got as far as the Dash Panels.

the lily pad level in mario sunshine, while it deff took forever to get to and the pipe takes you out of the level not to mention the instant death poison water, the trick to the level is quite literally the edges of the stage at the end as mario can walk right back up to the beginning of the stage from the ledge and try again as the lily pad will respawn when he gets there.
you just gotta walk back up and the lily pad will have been respawned giving another try. the lily pad stage actually becomes less frustrating with this in mind once one figures this out, but i don't think anyone would have thought about it or would bother.
