Fun fact: This was originally going to be used in a Peanuts short where at one point, Charlie Brown would walk on his parents getting it on. Sadly, said scene was deemed too inappropriate and the sounds ended up being used in this game instead.
My dad loved playing RE1 back in '99. He always loved this part with this music and the next day he fell down the stairs while carrying down a sheet of lithium metal to try and section off part of our waterlogged basement (it was all we had). I have part of his charred femur mounted above my bed today. Rest in peace pops 1911-2013.
Me: “Can I plug in my Aux Cord?” Zombie: “Ok, but you better not play anything trash!” **Trombone starts** Zombie: **Gives me the same look he’s giving on the game cover** - some hilarious comment from the original video
Conductor: "Due to budget cuts, we've had to reassign the programming team to record the soundtrack." Hapless Programmer: "We... we're really not musicians. It won't be goo--" Conductor: "Doesn't matter. Everyone grab an instrument and start playing. We'll edit it in post."
There is a reason this sounds the way it does. It's actually a bug in the code. The PS1 works with MIDI. The notes are all correct, but it's using the wrong instrument set. Look for the "fixed" theme, all it does is change the instrument set and it sounds ambient/creepy.
You know, I truly believe this is an actual Samurogochi composition. Mainly because it really does sound like something written by a guy who doesn't know what he's doing and is used to having someone else do his music for him.
it's just honestly MINDBLOWING that this made it past any sort of quality control. i mean, NOBODY over at capcom heard this and said "hey guys this sounds like complete shit maybe it shouldn't be in the game"? honestly i shouldn't complain because if it wasn't for bad quality control, we wouldn't be able to enjoy this clown fart fiesta
My guess is that it's partly due to the composer, who was very widely celebrated at the time. And then Mikami probably got embarrassed, thus resulting in REmake
The other day I watched a video on the inspirations behind Persona 5's villains and one of them was inspired by this track's "composer". So, yeah. This song has become part of Persona 5 lore
I have literally programmed an automatic stereo in my basement that play this song when ever I open my open my basement door. Let's just say my girlfriend shat herself when she went down for the first time.
Amazing! I’ve listened to this song in my apartment building’s basement once with a friend and we were just laughing our asses off the whole time. It was great.
I listen to this every time I'm having difficulty passing a bowel movement. 8 times out of 10, it helps. As I'm typing this, I am on the toilet. Wish me luck guys.
I love how the story behind this is somehow even crazier than the quality of the soundtrack- it was created by a blind and deaf composer who went on also score the critically acclaimed Symphony No. 1 Hiroshima, except he didn't and the majority of the songs credited to him over his 15 year career were ghostwritten, AND his blind/deaf status is up for debate. We're left with two explanations for how this particular track ended up the way it did- either the ghostwriter intentionally wrote it this way in rebellion (he hid the theme to Space Battleship Yamato in the afore-mentioned Symphony, which he knew the credited composer wouldn't pick up on)... or this is actually one of the few tracks composed by the man himself. Either way, it ain't a good look.
Or...it's actually just a bug in the code causing the wrong MIDI instrument set to be used. That is actually the problem with it. There's a video on here where someone fixed the instrument set (leaving the composition itself exactly the same) and it sounds like a creepy RE theme.
I just remember my older brother being really annoyed and pissed when playing this part for the first time, and meanwhile I couldn't hold in my laughter. >w
The dissoance, the abrupt start and consitent unnerving vibe, wow, this is truly the perfect harmony to display the feeling, the dread some might say... of entering the basement. The spencer mansion holds many secrets and dark tones, perfectly resembled here... a masterpiece...
If that handsome man on the cover approached me with this music playing, I'd be too paralysed with laughter to defend myself. I'd be the next Marvin Branagh, and that's that.

I am currently crying so hard right now. This is seriously the most beautiful, well put together song ever. I can’t believe how magical it was 1:12. That part truly made me shed a tear. And especially at 6:34 that part was just so truly heart touching words can not describe the series of emotions I felt. I absolutely loved the climax it had insanely excellent detail. Oh and we can’t forget the conclusion. The conclusion was the greatest and saddest conclusion I have ever seen better than any of the books I have read. Thank you so much for creating this absolute masterpiece. This is essentially the most important masterpiece of film history. It is a tragedy that this, it can’t be called a film, but a transcendent emotional experience, will be inaccessible for most. It beautifully encapsulates the human struggle to its basics; suffering, pleasure, faith, despair. It connects with the characters within the viewers, individuals suppressed within our own subconscious. It stays vibrant, fresh, and revolutionizes the art of storytelling and filmmaking while making a damn of statement on what it means to be human. Entertaining, gripping, and simply exhilarating. This might be the most impactful piece of art I’ve come across in my life, and I’m definitely coming back to it in the near future to study it more deeply. this is an absolute masterpiece , I was brought to tears listening to this and seeing the bacon go whirly swirly in a circle countless times. it absolutely moved my soul , and I don't think I can ever be the same. this bacon has changed my entire mental state , I am now at peace with who I am and what I will be doing later in my life. i have forgiven all my enemies and now I am a man of a pacifist life. Fun fact: This was originally going to be used in a Peanuts short where at one point, Charlie Brown would walk on his parents getting it on. Sadly, said scene was deemed too inappropriate and the sounds ended up being used in this game instead.

This is the soundtrack for arriving at work on Monday with a headache.
There is a reason this sounds the way it does. It's actually a bug in the code. The PS1 works with MIDI. The notes are all correct, but it's using the wrong instrument set. Look for the "fixed" theme, all it does is change the instrument set and it sounds ambient/creepy.

My guess is that it's partly due to the composer, who was very widely celebrated at the time. And then Mikami probably got embarrassed, thus resulting in REmake
They apparently just used the wrong soundfont. Someone swapped the fonts and it sounds passable.

Thats right , this was the problem with the midi file channels being transposed on playstation
his blind and deaf status isn’t up for debate. he faked being deaf
Pretty surprised Capcom didn't sue him for this mess.
