This song cycle will keep me occupied my entire life. From year to year I listen to different interpretations on this. It started in 1998, when I was 36. Now I am 56, and I still read, sing and listen these 24 songs. Thomas Q belongs absolutely to my top 5 performers of this song cycle. The others are Fischer-Dieskau, Prey, Hynninen, Pears and Talvela. I don't think I would ever have read Muller's poems if Schubert did not compose them. But he did, and these poems, these songs keep me occupied. Finest pieces of Art.

Holy moly! Mind blown. The voice. But also the expression. The entire story played out on his face as well as his voice. Another great role model. Danke schon!
With classical music, I either enjoy or feel totally indifferent. That said, I am so happy when I discover such treasures.. When I hear music like this, it's like the universe slows to a still, as if to hold its breathe, and let a tiny ray of silence enter our hearts to wash out all of our worries and sorrows. And as the silence unfolds, we follow its tracks out of the darkness, and enter a realm of peace, renewed hope, and eternal love. God's blessings to this angelic duo, and thanks to all who we're involved in providing access to this incredibly beautiful piece of music.
Bitte sing weiter! 🥰🙏🌷💐⚘ alles gute! Tolle Stimme, sehr geschmeidig, beruhigend, ausdrucksstark, die Seele singt mit, spürt man so richtig. Beste liebste Grüsse von Schubert Fan...
he has the best of both, i think. Diskau's timing and precision and Wunderlich's warm, dark smothness PLUS the emotions he can truly transport through the words because he feels them all himself by facing his own fortune.
Monument to Humanity. T. Q. I treasure and will stay as such through Eternity. I'm humbled and grateful for opportunity to enjoy interpretations of this great human being.
it's respectful to withhold applause until the end of the piece. Winterreise is a song cycle - 24 poems set to music, "Gute Nacht" is the first song in the cycle. I saw Quastohoff at Carnegie Hall - he was mesmerizing, the audience went wild!
That is a newer tradition, just as is the thing after Sirs Thalberg and Liszt had begun largely memorizing difficult work and playing them; to this Maestro Chopin said that it is as if one is pretending that the piece is theirs; I say choose what you want to do. Beethoven, many historians say, as well as Mozart or Bach, [;each] would’ve been horrified with no applause to the movements of their symphonies or masses. This was very common back in the day, especially in opera. People have full right to decide what they want to do. (: Best, Batz
Its mostly about the delivery, but actually for a long time, German composers thought, they could only really compose to Italian lyrics until they figured out the rythms and expressions you need to make German really singable (and the lyricists how to make a good, singable german text). Turns out, writing german text to english, italian or french music is very difficult and sounds "off".
Bravissimo!

Fuck off. What kind of god allows suffering. Do you think Thomas is happy being like that? How about children dying screaming from bone cancer? You people are insane. You attribute everything good to your invisible friend and ignore the horror.
I just learned about him in my developmental biology book. His mother was prescribed the drug thalidomide while pregnant as a mild sedative during the first 1-2 months after conception. This teratogen disrupts proper limb formation while the embryo is still developing. He was dealt a hard hand of life and has overcome the odds.
Katie Mackay The drug stops blood supply thus stopping growth. However, thalidomide is now used to treat cancer as no cancer can grow without a blood supply . A problem has arisen that in some developing countries people have illegally reverted to its original use ie to stop nausea in pregnancy and now, sadly, some babies are born with deformities because of this.
Per Wikipedia: Although the Food & Drug Administration never allowed the sale of thalidomide in the US, the manufacturer distributed over 2.5 million pills to 1,000 doctors as a clinical trial. 17 babies in the USA are known to have been affected.
