  • "..... watching Quasthoff sing "Der Leiermann" is a really unique experience in the world of recorded music on DVD nowadays, a deeply touching moment of absolute union between music and singer, between composer and performer, like his face shows in all the song, and
    like his voice sings"
from Franz Schubert's song cycle "Die Winterreise", op. 89, D. 911
    Thomas Quasthoff, baritone
    Daniel Barenboim, piano
Filmed live at the Berlin Philharmonie on 22 March 2005
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Drueben hinterm Dorfe steht ein Leiermann
und mit starren Fingern dreht er, was er kann.
Barfuss auf dem eise wankt er hin und her
und sein kleiner Teller bleibt ihm immer leer.
Keiner mag ihn hoeren, keiner sieht ihn an,

Beautiful performance. Thomas Quasthoff, born in the late 1950's was one of the thousands of children born with birth defects in those countries where thalidomide which was prescribed to relieve symptoms of morning sickness in pregnant women. It is heart warming to see that even this adversity could not prevent the development and expression of his huge talent.

    In English:
    There, behind the village,
    stands a hurdy-gurdy-man,
    And with numb fingers
he plays the best he can.
    Barefoot on the ice,
    he staggers back and forth,
    And his little plate
    remains ever empty.
No one wants to hear him,
    no one looks at him,
    And the hounds snarl
    at the old man.
And he lets it all go by,
    everything as it will,
    He plays, and his hurdy-gurdy
    is never still.
    Strange old man,
    shall I go with you?
    Will you play your hurdy-gurdy

      The Organ-Grinder
      Way behind the hamlet
      stands an organ man
      and with freezing fingers
      grinds the best he can.
      Barefoot on the snowbank
      swaying to and fro -
      and his little plate has
      ne'er a coin to show.
      No-one comes to listen,
      no-one comes to greet,
      and the dogs are growling
      at the old man's feet.
      And he lets it happen,
lets it as it will -
      cranking - and his organ
      never staying still.

So nice that people have responded with information about the song. The final heartrending detail is that this is the last song of the 24 song cycle "Winter's Journey", which tells the tale of a man, broken by the rejection of his beloved, who despairs and wanders out into the midwinter wilderness. This song obliquely relates the moment of his final demise. Was there really a hurdy-gurdy man? Or was it just his feverish last thoughts? Does it matter?

      THE ORGAN GRINDER
Yonder, past the village, stands the organ man,
And, with stiff old fingers, cranks just as he can.
Barefoot on the ice, he stumbles here and there,
And his begging bowl remains forever bare.
No one listens to him, no one looks at him,
Only dogs are barking round the strange old man,
And he lets it go, whichever way it will,
Grinds, his organ never standing still.
Strange mysterious old man, shall I come along?
Will you grind your organ to my song?

Over the village there is a lyre man
and with rigid fingers he does what he can.
Barefoot on the ice, he staggers back and forth
and his little plate always stays empty.
Nobody likes to hear him, no one looks at him,
and the dogs are growling around the old man.
And he lets it go all the way it wants
He turns and his lyre never stops.
Whimsical age, should I go with you?
Do you want to turn your lyre to my songs?

Fantasticly wonderful, tragic performance from the end song of Schubert's magnificent Winterreise! That song cycle is best ever written for piano and male voice on this earth. It can be performed well enough only by persons who have lived far enough or who have had big tragedy in their lives.

  • @charonsferryold

I relate to this song in ways I fear I shouldn't.
When I was a kid, I knew well the songs of beggars grinding away at their guitars' strings as the winter cold set in. I was told to not even make eye contact with them by my parents.
But then, when I started to run away from school, they were the among only people I could turn to and trust. And so I went with the strange old men, and to their songs I lived the darkest years of my life.

Good grief! !! I listened 8 months ago and was impressed. But this really is something else. Schubert had a profound feeling with Winterreise and this interpretation is a straight line back to Schubert. On a more prosaic note I liked the visuals. Barenboim does not do the flouncing that is endemic today and Quasthoff's face is the absolute perfection of expressiveness. Thank you to Kees (for uploading this gem), Schubert (of course) and Barenboim and Quasthoff for truly understanding the tragedy.

I honestly think that Quasthoff has fully understood the context of this sinister song, and he performs it so beautifully that I will never again be able to despise people socially rejected, living on the streets. Also, in some way, it makes me feel a strange longing for death...

Exacty! Imagine how hard you have to want to perform on a stage, with a body like Thomas has. How many people told him, that it is just not possible. He suffered for sure. And he overcame.
Barfuss auf dem Eise, wankt er hin und her
und sein kleiner Teller, bleibt ihm immer leer.
