Very helpful. My first look at my 318 with this pump made me wonder WTF is the impulse fitting on this diaphragm pump?! I knew it had to be on the back but its impossible to see with a quick inspection while everything is still installed on the tractor.

Fuel filter should always be installed before the pump to prevent contaminants from reaching it.

That is the way I installed my filter ...before the pump.

Very good but I would like to see a video of removing and replacing the tins... can't find one anywhere on web. Us newbies don't kno nothing :-)

What are your thoughts on an electric fuel pump. My 420 with (2420 hours) takes a while to prime. I thought it would save the battery if I only ran the pump instead of the whole engine to get it primed. Also, I could just use the electric fuel pump as a temporary primer pump placing a T in the fuel line after the OE pump and before the filter. I have just finished cleaning the tank and replacing the fuel lines and pickup tubes. I bought this non running with a snow plow for $350.

gonna try the mikuni df44-211 pump as a replacment. mounts a bit different. question on the space that you have when the engine is installed onto the tractor between the shroud and the firewall? 4-5"?

MMRBeef, question. My 318 seems to have a priming issue. Could it be the pump? Your thoughts? The 318 runs great, but has trouble starting after sitting for a couple days. I have to put my hand over the carb a couple times in order to get it started. But once started, it runs great. Its like my fuel doesn't stay in the fuel lines up to the carburetor while sitting. I see no leaks and I did change all the lines and I'm still having this problem. Could it be the fuel pump? Would love your thoughts. Thanks for all your videos.

There are a couple options/issues to prevent/solve your hard starting issue. Deere sells a check valve for the tank that will prevent most of the drain back from occurring but I still have some drain back over time. You can shut the fuel off which will help but not completely solve the issue. The pump is most likely fine and the cause for the long cranking times is the line between the pump and the crankcase is leaking (if you did not replace that one, if you did then you pump might need to be cleaned or replaced). The pump is operated by the pulse created by the pistons as they move in and out. Over time the line between the crankcase and pump will degrade and leak. This means the fuel pump will not be as strong = longer cranking times.

I think he did it right with the fuel filter after pump. I just installed a fuel filter on my JD212 and I put it before the fuel pump... bit mistake. Ill have to go back and fix that later.

Hey mmrbeef! Long time viewer here. Would you consider doing a video about adjusting the fuel mixture settings on the b48 onans, including where the adjustments actually are? I dont have access to a manual.
I have a b48g 420 and lately (i believe its the hot/humid weather that rolled in) the 420 has been bogging down after mowing about an acre, always at the last few passes (about an hour after startup). It smooths out with a decrease in throttle and i finish out the mow that way. It tells me its running rich, without the smoke of a rich engine. Choking it does the same bog around this time of operation. Also it will not restart after its warmed up unless i take the air cleaner off and give it a few cranks and see a small bit of fuely air spew out. But it has always done that since ive owned, maybe theyre related issues.
Before it acts up, it runs flawlessly at all rpm ranges. No power issues with load (pto engagement or somewhat tall grass, or inclines or quick throttle increases) Carb/jets have been cleaned, float adjusted. Has a new fuel pump and fuel filter, tank has been cleaned out. Does not puff smoke during load changes which would indicate a rich condition or bad rings if it were an oil burner. Id say im on the “less than average” side of the onan oil usage, machine has 1200 hrs. I dont think its running too lean because it doesnt “race”.
Thanks for reading my novel, just would like your input with as much information provided as possible. Thanks mmrbeef!

Hmmm I'll have to think on that one. Interesting that it takes so long to have issues. There are not a lot of adjustments to these cabs.. which is good... or bad? Haha. Let me do some reading and I will report back.

anyone know the specific fuel pumping rate that the fuel pumps on the 420 require? in LPH.

I know this is old but i just bought a flywheel off of ebay that said the flywheel fits a p220 but said 318 and 220 so is the flywheel compatible i Bought it for a wheelhorse bc i couldnt find a good wheelhorse one.

It should be fine. Generally the only difference between the P220’s in the Deere and Wheelhorse models are the PTO end crank diameter.

Why not put the filter before the pump? Wouldn't it be better to keep junk out of the pump too?

    • @mmrbeef
      @mmrbeef  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That's an idea I attempted when I installed the electric pump. I came to the conclusion that any filter prior to the pump (based on my pumps mounting location) would be a maintenance nightmare simply replacing it would require ~30-45 mins of work. In the at least five years the pump has been on the machine I have seen no "large" debris in the filter. Most large debris is stopped by the screens on the pickups in the tank.

@@mmrbeef I was mainly thinking of pieces of the fuel line as it gets old and degrades. I got a 89 craftsman 2 with the onan 20hp and the filter was just under the pump so thats where I put the new filter when I replaced the lines. I may move the lines and pump because I have plans to install a generator on the right side of the engine and need space for the belt.
