  • Make sure when you're replacing your small engine fuel pump you go with a factory mikuni brand. Don't waste your time or money on a cheap fuel pump.
    The Mikuni pump you need:
    Steel rebuildable one here,
    amzn.to/3y1ni24
    Plastic Briggs/Mikuni in the video,
    amzn.to/44mo0Dj

Thanks for the info. This is exactly what I'm dealing with. I installed a cheap pump on my 20 hp Briggs V-twin. There's no fuel going to the carb. Yet, when I pour gas into the hose to the carb and reattach the line, it runs perfectly until the gas is gone.

Bingo ! I bought a ZT1 cub cadet. It wasnt running well because mice got up in the engine and chewed the coil wire. Previous owner said he put a new fuel pump on it . He gave me the old one (OEM Walbro). I was experiencing problems with the way it ran. I watched your video, changed the "NEW" fuel pump CHINA JUNK, and put the old Walbro back on, and it starts better, and runs great ! Thanks bro.

Thanks, bro. I bought cheap ones from Amazon and fix them into my generator. But the fuel problem was the same(not enough fuel pumping to the engine). As these were brand new ones I thought the vacuum system was the problem. Check the values and did many things spending almost two days. But the problem remains the same. Finally, your video solves the prob.

With all respect to you for providing these troubleshooting hints, I did have some concerns. When you were testing the original remember that the pump was already primed so the amount of fuel delivery during this test would be more than when you tested the new pumps. Also I feel that the Pulse tube from the rocker cover should have been replaced before the testing to ensure that maximum vacuum was achieved. Other than that, your video provided enough information to allow for proper fault diagnosis. Thank you.

    Good advice,
Problem is Mikuni is junk too!!
Dealing these issues now, purchased a Oregon brand.. with the screws in side ,
It worked for a few hours then started with same problems as the old one that had been on the mower for a few years,
So I went down to a mower dealer & purchased the Briggs & Stratton brand ,
Just verified it was made by Mikuni,
It worked for an hour or so before giving me problems,
I can a switch the pumps back & forth and they may work for 5-15 mins before they stop pumping. And I’ve checked every other possible culprit for the issues,
So it has to be I got 2 💩 fuel pumps in a row,
2nd of which is the brand you recommended,
Even the guy at parts counter made a slight reference that they had recently received a bunch of bad fuel pumps.

One time my dad was angry because he took the car to get a fuel pump. This was back in the late 80s. He was mad because the mechanic wanted to charge him a whole lot more than what HE thought that he should pay for parts and labor (my dad was a cheapskate btw). Anyway, I heard him say 'What is it, a gold plated fuel pump?!' I suddenly had a vision when he said that and busted out laughing. Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner staring in 'The Gold Plated Fuel Pump' from Romancing the stone and the jewel of the nile. I laughed hysterically. Of course, my dad didn't quite see the humor in it and gave me that dumb look he always gave LOL.

Even with name brand parts it is hit or miss. Nearly all are Chinese parts. Ironically, I've had one crappy "cheap part" that didn't work and one that didn't fit. I have had 3 "quality" Oregon/Briggs carburetors/pumps that didn't work right. I really think it's a roll of the dice anymore.

You are correct with the hit or miss. I've tried the same thing. Some of the OEM parts are 'Made in China' as is the aftermarket parts. Most times when I've ordered aftermarket parts I have good luck. Sometimes I don't. But it's the same with most OEM parts too nowadays. Since I do the work myself, I take the chance. You win some, you lose some. But getting OEM parts don't mean it's gonna work like it should.

Those cracks in vacuum line might be whole reason old pump is not working properly .
My JD D130 starting stalling, misfires, stumbling after about 20 minutes of mowing. Wait 10 seconds, for cracked vacuum line to catch up, filling fuel bowl, runs fine 50 feet, then stalls again.
Found same cracks in my vacuum line.
Glued and taped with electrical tape, .mowed another 30mins, then tape got hot and lost vacuum-fuel again.
Motorcycles have the same vacuum operated petcock valve, any small leak shuts down whole fuel system.
Small crack in line , and diaphragm pump will fail.
(I noticed about 5 big cracks in your at :40)
Water in gastank will rust inside petcock valve, and cause it to get stuck in either ON or OFF position. Vacuum line can not produce enough force to move, if stuck in OFF position.

@@erniemckracken1593 A lot of ATV's use them as well. It's a common problem on the Suzuki King quads to go bad. I've bought a few to flip, just changed the pump. What causes them to go bad what breaks in them?

    • @TepcoCycleRepair

The diaphragm is either dry so it doesn't flex enough, or the diaphragm is cracked/not installed properly allowing fuel to bypass it and leak into the crankcase.

The problem is that it's a crap shoot. Like cheap carbs, sometimes they work fine and sometimes they don't work at all and cost you more money because you assume it works and spend money on other things that aren't needed. With a factory pump, although more expensive, it will work. Thank you for the comment.

No, it's a vacuum pump operated by case pressure, which pulses a diaphragm with valves to move fuel.

why not just eliminate the fuel pump and do a gravity feed ? The carb should not overflow since the needle valve / carb floats wont allow to much gas in the carb.

    • @TepcoCycleRepair
      @TepcoCycleRepair  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

Because on some the lower part of the tank sits lower than the carb and It also works as a fuel cut off. (I prefer an actual cut off so you can run the carb dry)

From the looks of that fuel, you aren't using ethanol free gas or you are a your station is selling you ethanol fuel and you don't know it. None ethanol fuel will be clearer that that was, the ethanol eats up parts in the pump and carburetor. Check into it, it will save you money.

Sorry, but I have to disagree with your video. I’ve used the cheaper pumps without an issue for years. It doesn’t matter how much fuel is coming out of the fuel pump. As long as enough is coming out of the fuel pump to keep the carb bowl full of fuel. The float and the needle valve control the flow of fuel into the engine, not the fuel pump. As long as you’re getting enough fuel into carburetor you’ll be fine. I’ve never had an issue with one and I’m not paying five times as much for a Briggs & Stratton that are made in the same Chinese factory. perhaps you weren’t getting as much fuel as you expected because your vacuum pulse line has obvious cracks in it. The pump I prefer are made out of metal and can be opened. Cleaned repaired and rebuilt if needed. I’ve never had to do any of that to them and I’ve had them on my machines for years if your motor surging you have carburetor problem and as you mentioned, you had water in the gas that has nothing to do with the fuel pump. Sorry if my comment contradicts your entire video but I want people to know what you’re telling him is not necessarily the case or at least it hasn’t been for me I will continue to buy the metal case Chinese pumps. You really have nothing to lose. If you purchase the pumps from Amazon if you have an issue or don’t like them, you can return them. Try that at your Briggs & Stratton dealer.

    • @TepcoCycleRepair
      @TepcoCycleRepair  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

The metal ones are probably better. These also leak fuel through to the pulse line filling the crank case with fuel. I used the same pulse like on all the pumps, they show cracks but they were not all the way through. I'll try a metal case aftermarket pump but these plastic ones are usually junk. I've had them leaking straight out of the box and/of not even pumping. The metal ones are probably like the Mikuni pumps, rebuildable and better quality.
