    Hi Nick. Great video. I have an Apple IPhone. But one thing I think everyone always forgets is that many functions of the iPhone and I believe Android are usable WITHOUT Apple Carplay or Android Auto and via wireless Bluetooth/NFC. I can make calls, receive calls, and play music (with album covers visible on the MBUX screen) without ever plugging anything in and without using Apple Carplay and Android Auto. Unless you want to view your text messages in your car, I think most people won't even need to use Apple's and Android's apps.

      Very True Richard!
      If you use native Apple Music on an iPhone you can actually still browse music you’ve saved on your phone. People also like to use it for 3rd party apps like Spotify and even Waze navigation.

    Great video as always. I just tried using Android Auto on my 2018 S 450. The app would only use about 2/3 of the screen. To the left, covering the other 3rd was an Android Auto logo. Tried it with multiple Android phones. Carplay uses the entire screen.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey John, using Apple CarPlay and Android Auto do vary. Most new Mercedes with MBUX now only utilise the screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio instead of 16:9. I wish it was full screen but this is normal and unfortunately there are no settings in the car to control this.
      Because of the many variables involved I don’t actually know why it’s like this but rest assured other models are the same.

The trackpad seems almost completely useless when i use android auto. Is there a trick to get this working with android auto? It's super annoying having to reach up to touch the screen every time I want to skip a song. thanks!

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Austin! I noticed that too and I believe it's Android's compatibility with it. That's why I had to use the touch screen in the video. I don't know I'm afraid with that one but everyone's is the same on that one.
      I'm not sure if it's Mercedes-Benz compatibility with Android Auto (although it works fine with Apple CarPlay) or if it's Android Auto's compatibility with the touchpad which it kind of leads me to believe.

    Can you adjust the screen size of the Android Auto/ Apple CarPlay to fit entire screen?!
    My E class coupe 2018 Comand Online shows it full screen, but the new one with MBUX doesn’t.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish it was full screen too but there are other manufacturers who have come across the same issue before.
      The reason is because MBUX on Mercedes’ is available in two screen sizes, 7” & 10.25”. When designing and coding I’m led to believe that you can only choose one (to maintain compatibility) for everything.
      So to make sure it works on all models, Mercedes of course had to go with the 7” version, which is perfect for 7” owners but of course leads to a cropped experience if you have a 10.25” screen.
      Hope that explains potentially why it’s like that on some cars!

      So MBUX NTG 6 (waves line animations for the voice assistant). Models usually have a touchpad in the middle)
      Tidal
      Amazon Music (selected models)
      For MBUX NTG 7 or later (sparkle animations for the voice assistant). Models don’t usually have touchpad.
      Tidal
      Amazon Music
      Apple Music
      Spotify
      These are generations of multimedia system so not software updates. It’s just what is found on the newer ones.

    • @npoleary

      Hey Adam, in this instance I would speak to your local Mercedes-Benz for a potential update :)
      Back when the A-Class in 2018 launched, the smartphone package update over the air didn’t exist. It was added a year later which meant there are some A-Class’s out there without this function. An update in the workshop added this ability to buy Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
      It was called FU1 or FU2, (FU stands for fresh up) if I remember!
      Once the update is done, you can purchase it.

      Hey EAMONN Tynan,
      You’ll have to double check what specification your CLS is, the equipment changed for the UK in December.
      CLS’s made in the factory before this, you need COMAND which is part of the Premium Plus Package to make use of Android Auto.
      If it was made from December onwards in the factory then Premium Plus is standard which also includes Android Auto as part of that. These CLS’s also come with MBUX.
      Hope that helps 🤓

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! 🤓
      The cable that I’ve recommended is just a USB-C to USB dongle or adapter. It just converts regular USB to USB-C.
      So it depends on your set up, what car you have the model and the year / what ports it has. And of course what phone you have (if it had USB-C or not) and what cable you already have.

    Nick..be a bit more honest about what Mercedes Benz offer in terms of Apple Carplay and Android Auto. My W177 A Class has both on-board but if you want to use either you have to pay Mercedes Benz £495 for 'smartphone integration'. Mercedes Benz are milking digital services for as much as possiible with this and reduced mercedes me services during the first 3 years of ownership. This policy is making me look elsewhere for my next car.....

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Bill, sorry it’s hard to be very specific as specification can vary so greatly across models and packages etc.
      There is a cost element to installing Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in the first place when a car is built so naturally some of that cost does come down to what is seen when configuring one from scratch.
      Some models have it included for free where as Mercedes-Benz’s entry level model the A-Class it’s part of the Smartphone Integration Package when being built. However...you can add this after the car’s been built if you wish, heading over to the Mercedes me store it can be purchased for around £299.
      Other manufacturers have done similar things but actually charged an annual subscription for this where this is a one off payment.
      Regarding Mercedes me Services again, it varies so much from model to model, all details are in the brochures but it used to be primarily free on high end Mercedes. Now it’s more commonly seen included with most models only very recently. Most models can subscribe to the Mercedes me app from approx 2015-2016 onwards.

      I wish it was full screen too but it’s the same for Apple CarPlay on MBUX. There are other manufacturers who have come across the same issue before.

      @Nick O'Leary thanks for the reply 👍. It must be an android issue as my wife's apple car play fills the full 12.3" display in my 2018 cls with comand. Just wondering if mercedes have thought about filling the 1/3 of the display currently taken up by the android auto logo with the cars display like it does using the split screen function it currently uses (additional display area). Being a geek I'm thinking if android takes up 2/3 I could make use of the other 1/3 with consumption data or maps etc... just a thought.

      Hi Jag,
      Wireless charging is an optional extra on GLC’s so just make sure you have it. It’ll be in the centre console in where your cup holders are and it’ll be a rubber pad. There are no settings to turn it on, but another step is make sure your phone is compatible and make sure your phone case (if you have one) isn’t too thick. Also the ignition / engine must be on too.
      If you’ve tried all of the above, get your car booked into your local Mercedes-Benz and I’m sure they can get to the bottom of it!

      Hey Tom, that’s normal behaviour for phones
      When playing over Bluetooth, you also use the phones in-built amplifier to adjust the volume, hence why you can change the volume for your earphones as the phone does all the work.
      However if you play via USB, then the car will be doing that job and bypassing the phones amplifier as you’re using the car’s one.

      @@npolearyThanks for getting back to me, Nick.
      I am aware of what you are saying. I've been into Car Audio for years and have done many of my own retrofits etc. This really has to be the biggest frustration of all though as I know that the sound system is capable of much more power as it is SO loud when connected via standard Bluetooth.
      I'm absolutely convinced there is another volume control for usb playback somewhere, either within android auto or my Merrcedes Command unit, though frustratingly I am unable to locate it.
      I remember when I got the car a few weeks back and I was using just the BT connection for audio. I thought it was really average in terms of gain etc. I then found that it has the (albeit basic) built in EQ which, when boosted, made all of the difference.
      This EQ does not appear to be the same for each audio source, as it changes when I switch from BT to FM/DAB, again giving me more reason to believe that it would be similar for USB playback.. if only I can find where (or even if it) is hidden..!

      Automatic parking (Active Parking Assist in Mercedes-Benz) was removed from all manufacturers from approx 2020 onwards (pre built models and old models are unaffected).
      This is due to the new United Nations regulation (UN-R-79). This basically requires systems like Parking Assist to have a hands on / hands off sensor to detect if you have your hands on the steering wheel or not. I'm sure Mercedes-Benz are working hard on this for future models in years to come but is not currently available on new cars.
