Activate Android Auto/Car Play on 2016 Mercedes-Benz A Class

- Here's how I was able to activate Android Auto on my 2016 Mercedes-Benz A 220d (w176). The same instructions can also be used to activate Apple Car Play.
When I first got the vehicle, I was quite disappointed that it didn't come with Android Auto, and I had planned to update the head unit to one of those 10" Android displays. Luckily I stumbled upon some additional settings that I hadn't seen before while trying to figure out something else, and to my delight, Android Auto could actually be activated and works great!
I came here specifically to say a massive THANK YOU! I couldn't get Android Auto to work and spent days researching with no luck until I found your video. I've just followed your steps and I've now got Android Auto!!

Yes!! Worked perfectly for my 2017 SLC300, fully enabled the Android Auto, took 30 seconds. This is the only video which explains the actual mechanism for enabling these features when they are absent from the top-level menus. Went to two Mercedes service depts, they were clueless.

@@smerds Thanks, i figured out how to reset, enter to engineering mode, but after change of option and reboot of device setting are reverted to off
Sorry, it worked for me after resetting the head unit to factory settings, apart from trying again I've no idea.

Hi, as seen with a few others mine keeps resetting to no on the apple carplay selection. I’ve changed the load icon to AMG, you mentioned maybe a software update, can this be done from the engineering menu also? I noticed there was a section for that but was too scared to click it haha. Thanks

Any clue why it keeps turning off for me? I saved the settings (AMG logo to confirm this), but when I go back to the settings page the UI is turned off again (Also for Apple Carplay) I tried it multiple times and it keeps going back to 'off'.

I have been able to go into the engineer menu only after doing a factory reset on the vehicle menu. Unfortunately, variant coding menu is the only one greyed and I could not go further in my attempts to switch Android Auto. My car is a B250ed (electric drive W242 similar to W246 for most parts of the dashboard).
Do you have any advice on enabling android auto/Apple car play on a 2019 GLC300, without buying an expensive module?
Hey, do you have any idea why after pressing set page, changing a page, its automatically changing CarPlay via USB on OFF and same for automotive link ? Works fine just with logo. Same when iam trying save a changes ( holding on/off button )

You need a OBD2 activation tool, after that it will be activated. I had the same problem.
@xSinergy_ not any obd, its must be extra an activation tool, it activates android car or apple car play in the system

I have the same issue, I was looking for why, and i recently found that perhaps we have to reset to factory befor doong this, im going to try, because the only thing that was able to do was to change logo but the Apple car play and android auto did not appear. I have a B200 2018 in Argentina. If i mange to change it i will answer here!!!

Help needed, followed all steps, changed logo etc etc however.. Once I hold the on button for 10 seconds the systems reboots fine.. then new logo comes up and no car play or android auto :( every time I set the coding page and do all the exact steps but the UI settings go back to default every time :( please help :(

Hello, I succesfully go into engineering mode, i do everything the tutorial suggests but i can't seem to activate android auto. The only difference between my car and the tutorial one is that in the variant coding page 2, on the remote ui applications section, the remote ui services, carplay via usb and automotive link via usb are all off by default. Once i turn them all on and i restart the car the modifications i did do not apply, apart from the ci screen type. Do you have any suggestions?
Edit: my car is a mercedes a160 from 2017 if it can help identify the problem

I follow all the instructions, it changed the symbol, but all the other settimgs were not :( Doesnt show android car player, anyone know why? Everytime i return to the menu, what i changed was as before i changed it....:(

I go into the menu and set everything to On, On and Set, but it doesn't stay fixed. When I go back into the menu, the function is set to Off again. Do I have to activate the AMG logo for that? I don't want to. HELP ME PLEASE. Cla 180 2018.

Thank you so much for this! Just bought a 2015 B Class and this worked like a charm. Things were laid out a bit differently, but I was able to work it out and even find my ambient lighting colours which had been turned off! You just made my life infinitely better! (Also, my AMG Line now screams AMG when I put my key in and it makes me so happy! 😄)

I have a 2015 B220, and I have followed Tulla's instructions and it only saves the changes in AMG,
It doesn't save the CarPlay ones for me.

You need a OBD2 activation tool, after that it should be activated.
I managed to get onto the engineering menu and I changed the loading screen which proves it saved that setting however it does not save my settings regarding the remote UI applications. On my screen it has it set that the RUI settings are off for remote UI. I have tried to mirror your selections on this video but when I go to set the page it doesn't save my changes. Any ideas????
Oof.. that's rough. I've seen a few other commenters with the same problem. Unfortunately I really don't know why it's not working for some. Maybe in need of a software update first?

For me it saves the amg logo, but carplay doesnt show up in the telephone menu
My setting is already active in the car settings, I have made sure CarPlay is not restricted on my iPhone and it still won’t connect in the second media port it just charges my phone… I’m think maybe the USB is at fault.
Well that is frustrating. I wonder if my 2019 GLA 250 will do the same and not allow it.
I would appreciate if someone advice or guide,
I went into the engineering mode and activated carplay since my car is equipped with it. But as soon as I save and exit to go reboot the system I can see that the option is back to off and for as much as I keep toggling the option back on as soon as I leave the page it goes back so the carplay option never shows on my screen when I connect my phone.

I’ve bought an OBD Activation tool and now it works perfectly fine, without doing anything in the settings it just came instantly after plugging the OBD in.

Got the exact same car turned everything on as described on vodeo. The only thing that worked was the change of logo, it seems to not set the page to on, it just goes back to off when you check it

Just curious: did you also enable the "Remote UI Services" option, which is next to the CarPlay/Automotive Link options? I should have called that one out in the video.

I tried this on my 2016 W176 AMG Line premium, the start up screen changes to type 1 which shows it works but the apple car play etc setting is turned off when you go back to the menu? Am I doing something wrong?
That is very odd. Let me get back to you on that. Currently away for a few weeks though. If I recall correctly, I think there were some related settings on page 3.
