Hey skillup, I would love if you at some time also review "older" games. Your favourite games, some classics, forgotten hits or biggest misses. From the 2010s or even sooner. Just an idea ❤ Thanks for your work, love your channel!🎉
It kind of makes me depressed when I realize how much better games were back then over the sludge we have been getting for past several years. At least some corporations are turning a new leaf and actually trying to make games rather than a service
elden ring is a specific niche in gaming. Some people don’t like the lack of story telling, cutscenes, npcs, towns, and traditional staples of many other rpgs.
Same here, the original was such an overrated game for me, compared to the original Biohazard titles(big RE2&3 fan here), however this remake is something else... hit's all the right tones in regards to survival horror games, dropped the campy tone(to some degree) but improved in pretty much any other aspect. It's such a darn good game with so many secrets, ways to approach/skip certain encounters and overall replay value. It's insane.
a frien will borrow me his ps5 to play this, and before that, i went to refresh my memory with the original, i did not remember this game being so old, it came out in 2005, but i might have played it on 2007/8 since games in my country arrived late, and i only could play it at my cousin's house, and since then, never touched it again, and the game, i dont know how, but it feels timeless, yes, the "no walking while shooting" is a thing, and shooting with square is weird to the modern era of controls, but is just amazing how the game holds so fresh after so many years, and the pacing is immaculate.
My favorite part is how a lot of the dialog feels like it’s subtly “matured” in this version. There is a part early when you get Ashley where Ashley hears a roar in the distance and asks Leon “do they have wild animals here?” prior to them getting briefly separated, only for Leon to find out that roar was from a hulking monster with steel blades as arms. When he reunites with Ashley after fighting the monster and she asks if he is okay, he responds “I’m fine, you were right about them having animals here” It’s both a badass thing to say, and Leon protecting Ashley from the truth to avoiding her feeling even more afraid.
@@elqord.1118 Have you played the game yet? It's literally mentioned in every review, this one included, how their relationship is more fleshed out than the original. That includes their interactions in between cinematics.
@@qu1253 The microtransactions are not ruining your experience, they are optional weapon ticket upgrades, you don't have to buy them. You can also buy the tickets directly in the game without paying.
Fun fact: Since introducing the "I recommend/do not recommend" title layout, Shill Up has only *very* strongly recommended two games: Elden Ring, and now, Resident Evil 4 (2023).
I first played the original when I was 20. Must've played it at least 3 or 4 times after that and now that I'm 37 going on 38, it's amazing how the original still holds up despite the game showing its age in some areas. I know the remake is an outstanding achievement and can't wait to get my hands on it. Still have to finish the Dead Space Remake which is a great remake in its own right. This is a great time to be a gamer.
@@AmariMarvelous I've played the OG a few times recently in preparation and I'm amazed at all the parts that haven't really aged well or don't fit are just gone or redone in the best type of way. This is how you do a remake to perfection!
@@fgcaceninja Absolutely 💯. Majority of gamers are enjoying this remake and I know I will too. Is the remake just about the same length or longer than the original? Cuz even the original was kinda lengthy but you didn't notice it because the pacing was so good and I'm hearing the pacing on the remake is great as well.
@@danieltp478playing a higher difficulty on a NG+ is counter productive. It’s actually harder on NG standard mode than hardcore on NG+. Your Call of course
The overwhelming success of Dead Space and RE4 remakes show just how much gamers still love the survival horror style. Hopefully we see a new golden age for these types of games. Even with the failings of Calisto Protocol, it's still one more game to nudge the meter back in this genre's favor.
Neither of these games are "survival horror". Cattle like you are exactly why survival horror died once already and its now nothing but a marketing label to make it sound like a game is even more horrorerer compared to the competition
@@MMaRsu "Gatekeeping" has never been a bad thing about literally any topic ever. I wish REmake 4 had no other difficulties than hardcore and professional too to weed out more of the poser trash
@@blackartsasmr2146I was about to say I understand your distaste for 5 and 6, but the moment you started defending the very practice of gatekeeping, I realized this is clickbait.
@@Mojo1356 Where have I said anything about any "distaste" for "5 and 6"? I said neither of the games the original person mentioned are "survival horror". And yes, there is literally nothing wrong with gatekeeping, the only "people" who think otherwise are the exact people the gate was meant to keep out to begin with. You are the reason modern gaming is 99% utter cancer
That combat experience is spot on. The game really forces you to choose every options available. When you're unlucky with the last encounter where you waste many ammo, suddenly stealth became a very tempting option to thin out enemies in the next encounter. Getting rough with low damage and no explosives for crowd control, now you scour every single "red means boom" you can find with your eyes. And it's somehow felt good rather than demanding, it's actually amazing
The only other RE game that deliver this combat experience is RE 5. People need to stop disrespecting RE 5 like is such a demotion in quality compared to 4, because it is not.
@@cchristianjeremy A great game is a great game, nothing else really matters. I think when people say it wasn't a "good RE game" they mean it wasn't horror, okay then but, one could argue the RE franchise was never really this A list horror experience some people make it to be, it was always action but whatever. To me RE5 has the story in the main numbered titles, so to me it was a great RE game.
Its possible to do that with a knife as far as I know, a chainsaw would have a pretty hard time cutting through a pure metal knife blade since it was mainly designed to cut through wood I hate to be realistic game Andy but I just thought it was interesting lol
When I beat it, I immediately wanted to jump back in and play it again all over. That's how I felt with breath of the wild. That's how I knew capcom did a darn great job. Easily a great masterpiece once again
That's how you know when a game will really stick with you, in recent times the only games that elicited such a feeling from me was Metro Exodus and Elden Ring.
I'm really hoping Capcom brings Leon back in future game(s) and I'd definitely be down to see more of Ashley as well. Which is a huuuuuge departure from how I felt about her after the original RE4.
Leon is gonna be pushing mid 50 next game lol. Idk if they want him to lone wolf stuff. Plus if leon is the protagonist, he is going to be op like chris in re8 with the amount of shit he’s gone through.
@@michaelvoorhees5978 The most recent RE game Leon appeared in was RE6, and he lived in that one, so…🗿 In fact, the only major RE protagonist Capcom has ever killed off is Ethan.
I never thought anyone could take something perfect and turn it into something even more fantastic, but here we are. This game is just very well done (and I'm not even much of an RE fan).
This is one hell of a ride. So good. I love the original and the vision Shinji Mekami achieved with that rollercoaster development cycle. What Yasuhiro Anpo, Kazunori Kadoi and Yoshiaki Hirabayashi did with this remake shows so much respect for that vision and for us, the fans. Amazing game
Capcom has done an amazing job creating the sense of accomplishment when all hope is lost. The way that the backend 'director' provides monumental wins for you, such as having no healing left or being low on ammo, is amazing. Something people will probably miss but it's definitely there. It allows you to make mistakes but still pull a win out, not always, but when you really are putting in the work.
@@johngibson3770 this mechanic was in the OG version of the game. It's ok to just enjoy a game and have it balance out your experience according to your circumstance. We got rogue likes for old school gamers and many many many other games that don't hold your hand.if you feel otherwise I suggest you browse through steam or happily recommend some tough as nails games
@@johngibson3770 the director works the other way too. Play well and you'll wonder where all the ammo and health went, and why the enemies are so much stronger and more numerous.
As soon as I beat it the first time I said to myself "This is one of the best video games I've ever played" so glad to see that sentiment is shared amongst so many gamers.
The emotional punch that they added to this rendition of RE 4 is just…the best. I wasn’t expecting it, and it caught me off guard. Very well done. “This time it has to be different” was such a simple line, but man it hit me hard.
I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this - but you can actually see if an Enemy will transform into the mutated version if their eyes are glowing red. If you take them out by Melee combat then they do not transform, however blowing off their head more often than not causes them to transform.
@@mfmaximus8603 Nah I hate speedrunning requirements in any games, don't even wanna do it for the trophies either, I don't like skipping stuff, I wanna cherish the game every time I replay it.
Glad to see you enjoyed it! This was my first time playing RE4 (I'd previously only played Biohazard and Village) and I'm absolutely loving my time with it! It's fascinating to see the DNA it shares with Village, I see a lot of similarities between the two, especially in setting and tone, so I'm glad these remakes have given me a reason to jump into the older games and see where it all started! Must try RE4 VR next... 👀
tbf it is a waste of time because you can just run past them and they miss their attack. I realised that towards the end of the section, you probably found that out at the start.
@@sttateits a defensive mechanic. You're not supposed to use it offensively. That's why it's faster to just run. And use the lamp in case you get cornered. That gameplay decision isn't a waste of time. You just didnt get it😂
It really is insanely good. They almost perfectly captured the feel of the original, added moments that are genuinely terrifying, and the game is absolutely stunning visually. These last few years have been incredible for Resident Evil, what a time to be alive.
Great review! I'm not even sure if I ended up beating it for Gamecube but years later I was obsessed with the Wii version and beat that probably 30 times. More recently I beat the VR version 4 times (it's unbelievable if you haven't tried it yet) and RE4 remains one of my favourite games ever...the remake tops it in every way 🤯 it still feels like RE4 but perfected in just about every way!
You've gotta try RE4 2005 with the HD project installed, its amazing how the maker finding the original sources and inspirations in spain and remaking the textures in HD as well as all the remodels does the game amazing justice
The story is more cohesive, I dont remember much about the OG but I remember I loved it, And I love this and it seems new and more areas that are different, I may be wrong, And this seems to not be just about the cult and weaves a story where it connects to the whole.
I just beat RE4 Remake at the same time this review came out lol, I recommend it 10/10… The game keeps you thinking quick the whole game, theirs a lot of unique scenarios that somehow keep getting better as you go through the game 🔥
They straight-up made RE4 a masterpiece once again, and for that Capcom definitely deserves all my praise *and* money. They’ve definitely been on a major roll with RE ever since the PS4 generation with RE7, and I definitely can’t wait to see what they have in store with the series in the future. Especially with the rumored/datamined plans of Separate Ways DLC starring Ada Wong.
Excellent review! I think you really illustrated why RE4R is such an outstanding success in terms of game design. One minor nitpick though...Leon was working with local Spanish law enforcement in order to locate the president's daughter. He was only following up on a potential lead and didn't know she was there in that particular village until just before he had to jump out of window. Hence the reason he isn't getting a massive amount of support from the start.
I love your reviews so much. I’ve already finished my playthrough and into NG+ but wanted to hear your thoughts anyways. And honestly that’s how I usually interact with your reviews as audio only while I’m working. I treat them like a really good podcast. Thanks for the entertainment.
Honestly don’t think I’ve been this addicted to a game ever. I am not very good and I die a lot but I am getting better the gameplay is just so addicting! Gonna start my professional play through later wish me luck!
I feel this is the first RE game even the old action ones like 5 and 6 or the OG 4 where I feel I can customized how I play and my Leon is different from others. Obviously it's limited to the weapon variety but your loadout really allows you to express how you dish violence. Even the stealth approach is awesome. I love it so much and I love the characterization of Leon and Ashley.
I felt the exact same, I was always on the brink. I never had enough ammo, and there was always a scarcity of herbs when I needed them most. It was exhilarating.
This game was masterpiece 20§years back and it is still a masterpiece today I didn't think Capcom would be able to pull it off as the original set the bar so high, but not only RE4-R met the bar, but it set new standards
Bro same, I saw SkillUp freeze the guys by aiming the lamp and was like "holy shit , you can do that???" But not using the lamp I feel like it made that entire sequence more fun for me at least.
Excellent analysis of Ada's tone and demeanor. I would also add that she's *trying* to be distant and cold rather than bored altogether. Since the events of RE2, she's had time to reflect: she got shot while backing down from shooting Leon, and she nearly lost the G sample. She got distracted, faltered, and almost failed her mission, which is something she doesn't believe a consummate professional should ever allow to happen. And it's not a stretch to think that she may have put the blame on her bond with Leon. So, she decided at some point that if she ever met Leon again especially while on a job, she wouldn't let that get in her way. She decided to be cold and detached and mostly succeeds, except that her intentions, decisions, and actions betray her anyway. She obviously still cares for Leon, and to an extent doesn't want an innocent college girl to be doomed to the fate looming above her. There is a struggle between these two sides - the outwardly distant and all-business Ada, and the inwardly human and emotional Ada. And Lily's voice acting captures one side of that very well.
@@thekivster sure, let's all just not use our brains any more when trying to process the media we consume. Take everything at absolute face value. Got it.
@@fadeT0grey010 Since the voice actress did an obviously terrible job you're trying to make up an explanation on how the awful voice acting fits into her character which it does not in any way.
@@thekivster digging more into what a character is all about beyond what is shown on screen is apparently the same as making excuses for their VA. Astounding acrobatics here!
Capcom, unfortunately, has never given a shit about RE3. It was a bargain bin side project back then, it was in 2020. I think Capcom understood the immense weight of expectations with an RE4 remake and knew they had to nail it
I remember waking up late at night as a kid to my brother playing re4 on my ps2, sounds scaring me shitless. Now that im hopping into the remake, its like meeting an old friend you haven't spoken to in a long time, but as soon as you talk to them its like a day didn't pass at all and it was even better than you remembered them being. Capcom is absolutely killing it!!
They literally took one of my top three games of all time and made it even better. I’ve played the original for thousands of hours, and I’m waiting to play this until I go on vacation :)
stealth was a welcome one, befitting for a survival horror game with resource management, adding gameplay variety on how you want to tackle faced situations. gameplay-wise, it's more dynamically engaging w/ parrying, ducking grabs, shooting, and CQCs; varies from pistol, sniper, shotgun & explosives that excel in their roles. Pulling it all off, it's satisfying when all connects.
As for the Last of Us comments regarding gameplay, I think it's a pretty valid argument for lower difficulties. That being said, if you haven't already tried, I would go back to one of those Last of Us Part 1 or 2 encounters and try it on Survivor mode. Don't restart if things go south, just roll with it and see what happens. The limited resources cause you to use so many weapons and tactics in your arsenal and I think you'll find moments similar to RE4 when you do that (at least I did). Love the review and can't wait to give RE4 Remake a go here soon!
@@grandrtiv26 Since it's one of Sony's golden goose titles, I feel like they probably have to include those lower difficulties for the wider audience, but both Part 1 & 2 are absolutely meant to be played on Survivor or Grounded! Displays the full potential of the mechanics, especially with the limited resources and awesome enemy AI
I was especially baffled by part 2's moderate difficulty where enemies feel damn near blind while hard mode make them look like the most realistic AI in a video game lol. I also agree the combat in the game is very dynamic, but it can be quite unchallenging in the lower difficulties (I'm guessing because it's a narrative-focused title and they'd probably prefer people experiencing the full story)
This game is such a trip. There are moments where you're like man did they remove that part and then it shows up later in a reimagined way that is even better. They took one of the best games of all time and somehow made it even better, hopefully the same can be said of the island which I just got to. The question whether or not a remake is necessary isn't even important at this point. This game is just so good, it's been a long time where I've played such a long game where every single moment is peak, usually many others that are rated super highly have moments that are boring or where you wish that it would end, but not this one. I've played 20 hours, just got to the island and I cannot recall lately a game where it was a masterpiece every single second. So satisfied, Capcom proving themselves as the best gaming company around.
@@JuliusCaesar103 I'm almost finished but it has been one wild ride. From the village brawl, the fight with El Jigante, everything about the castle, and the kickass boss fights with Krouser. I've been enjoying the hell out of this and I'm already looking forward to playing it again.
The island in my opinion has the two best chapters in the whole game: 13 and 15. What happens in terms of both horror and action there is beyond me. Definitely a huge improvement compared to the original, atleast in this segment.
this remake is definitely the gold standard of remakes in my mind, i would say even above Resident Evil 2, which is probably one of my favourite games of all time. as a side note, hearing you gush about Leon as a newer fan of resident evil 4 was gold, Leon is easily my favourite character in the series and this game did him so much justice
The games combat is absolutely top notch. Glad you enjoyed this, it’s a fantastic game and while there’s some aspects I prefer about the original, this is just a great game overall. Whether anyones likes the original more or you like the remake more, I don’t think it really matters because we all live in a world where we have 2 great games, and everybody wins.
I’m one of those people that grew up with 4 and I still would say it’s a top 3 game of all time for me. I absolutely loved this remake, even though I enjoy the original game more, but I had an amazing time with this remake for sure. Definitely still doing more play throughs of this one. Capcom has been really impressive these past few years I must say.
FINALLY a review that can use other footage other than stock footage! Skill Up, I'm so happy to have you back on the right side of history and it was really nice that you highlighted some things that most other reviews barely talk about...like Ashley. Ashley and Leon's relationship is just LEAGUES better in this game and Ashley, as a character, is actually someone I'd like to meet or play as again in a future entry. To not only remake one of the best games ever made, but also improve upon it by recontextualizing characters for a modern era is simply astounding. Capcom has officially done the thing!
It’s the first game that I have completed multiple times since MGS4 on all the difficulties. Actually it is the first game that I have fully finished since MGS4. And I totally felt the similarities between it and a Kojima game but couldn’t put words into that feeling. The last console I had was a PS3 and to try RE4 bought myself a new PS5 and I can’t stop playing it every day after work, I have been sent back in time and having fun playing video games 10 years.
It’s funny you mention how much darker and more grim RE4 is compared to 3 and 2 because of killing people that look alive, the whole time I’m playing and blowing the villagers’ heads off I’m thinking things along the lines of “she was someone’s mom” or “he was someone’s husband” 😢
@Afro Shinobi They nailed that as well. The original did it and a lot of people missed it cause they weren't really paying attention to the sequence of events shown in the pictures. REmake 4 pays homage by showing the pics as the first game did, but then goes even farther with it. Having the camera that took all of the pics be one of the treasures you find was great as well. Such a nice touch.
I play the og once a year. I love every single version of this game including the VR. Maybe it's just nostalgia or my own bias but I truly believe the remake is one of the best video games I've ever played. I'm on playthrough 9 now 😂😂
I also really like the way they changed some moments in the story, like how now Krauser is the one who kills Luis instead of Saddler. I didn't see it coming and it fit everything more perfectly. Also they did a great job at giving Luis more spotlight, I felt his dead way more than in the original.
I can't believe how much I like this game. The OG is so old that I can't even remember it. that probably helps! I can definitely see myself replaying it and enjoying it more the 2nd time because there is a bunch of shit I missed so far on this playthrough. AWESOME game!
Okay honestly, this has got to be your best reviews yet. I agree with every single thing that you said about this remake. What a masterpiece it is! Every mechanic and every set piece is just beyond perfect. It tries to become so many things at once and it just nails it. Love the review!!
8:15 The credits on the original version are quite depressing actually. They are a bunch of paintings of the village people. Working, playing guitar and kids playing around. Then Saddler comes and brainwashes everyone and exploits all these humble people for power. It may not be the most deep writing but the setting is pretty sad if you think about it
This game is a super fun ride. Graphics, sound design, music, characters, overall presentation, just fantastic stuff! And the fact that there is a new game plus and you can unlock new skins via just playing the game with no microtransactions is just awesome. It feels like the good old days.
I don't usually replay a game that I finished unless it's like 1 year apart But doing a second playthrough trying to do it as fast as I can is surprisingly fun
I actually dare anyone to watch a review of a game skill up loves and not want to play it afterwards. No other reviewer conveys their passion like skill up, keep it up king.
Yeah I played the original and insane amount of hours over 18 years.. Back then all my mom's can get was 1 game for me in a year maybe even 2. This was one of them, the Gameplay was so addictive. And now it's 4x better with the parry and movement.
@@dominicdococo4574 Yeah I get it, I thought it was more faithful to the franchise than the Mila Jonavich films and enjoyed it alot more because of that.
Skillup absolutely channeling the entire internet when he says everyone wants to be friends with Leon. I swear he's like John Wick Keanu in this game, absolute badass, throwing out oneliners, and very kind when he has to be
Why do you think Capcom changed Ada's tone and dialog? Ada now sounds more like a middle aged disgruntled grade school librarian. The unspoken romantic tension between the 2 throughout multiple games inherently makes their dynamic more interesting. Taking the new direction you noticed doesn't mean quality of the delivery has to be so mid it breaks immersion
This game and the Dead Space remake was my entire 2023, shameless in saying that as ive literally grown up with these games alongside many other horror games. Makes me emotional on how far we've come in the genre
One reason why I would recommend this game for fans of original RE 4, is seeing the character growth of Leon. Leon is one of my favorite characters, and you can tell his humor masks some of the trauma he experienced in Raccoon City.
But this doesn't work if it's a remake. What you're implying would work if there was DLC to the original or in a sequel. This is a remake of an already established game with it's own atmosphere and canon. How can he mature here if he wasn't as mature in the original? What kind of logic is this? Can you explain?
@@mihailnikolov5535 I’m guessing what they mean by “mature” is that his character actually feels somewhat logical here than in the original RE4. In the OG RE4, Leon was a witty badass for the sake of being a witty badass. There really wasn’t a reason for him to be how he was in the game, he just was because it was fun. But in RE4 Remake, Leon actually has a reason for being how he is. It’s because he’s grown numb to the world due to Raccoon City and the government forcing him to work for them. Leon’s not witty because of he thinks it’s overly funny or because he thinks he’s some superhero, he’s making jokes to mask how he truly feels, and you can tell and feel that in the Remake. Leon being a badass and being able to survive the swarms of the village also feels more believable in the Remake, as not only does the game reinforce the idea multiple times that he is top-teir military trained, but by the fact that he actually needs people’s help during battles multiple times in the game (such as the giants and the bossfight in chapter 11).
RE4 has always been my all time favorite ever since my first playthrough back in 2006. Never have I replayed a game as many times as I have RE4. Even though Capcom has been knocking it out of the park lately with the RE series, I was a little worried it wouldn't hold up to the original or it might stray a little too far from what made RE4 so good. I Just finished my first playthrough and it was incredible. So true to the original content, but a refresh in every way. Super glad you enjoyed it and are retroactively experiencing the magic of the original.
It’s a perfect remake, I love it, capcom nailed it. It’s a game that I’m not done with once I finish the story, i’m playing it just to play it because it’s so good. I also really liked how nice to Ashley Leon was, he’s not some dismissive cool guy. He’s actually reassuring to her and even compliments her multiple times when she’s afraid to improve her mood. Like when she talks about becoming an government agent as well, he doesn’t brush it off or laugh, he AGREES that after all the shit they have been through she has definitely proven herself to be capable. He’s the perfect guardian figure.
It's really great to see the positive reception this game is getting in the comments. And it's well earned. I've played damn near every version of Re4 original. GameCube, wii, 360, ps4. Playing through the remake now and I'm loving it
I had forgotten how scary this game was (scary in a good way). Maybe I was just more immune to scary things when I was younger, but when I played the remake, I had constant goosebumps
I feel like I’m slightly missing something. Finished the game today and while it’s absolutely excellent and I really enjoyed it, I don’t quite understand how people are making it out to be one of the best games ever. I guess it’s just not quite my thing as I’m clearly in the minority
This video's title should be, Post modernism is killing good writing, from Books and movies to comic books, videogames and music. And nothing compares to a good old fashion, blast from the past.
You absolutely hit the nail on the head and articulated my feelings towards this remake and the series as a whole after this. They need to understand their characters like Leon and villains like Krauser are what made us fall in love with this series and only take it to new heights. Can't wait for what's next.
I never quite realised just how much taste and experiences in these games aligned with yours Ralph, I only actually got into the series at 7, and loved it. Played the original version of 4 and didn't really gel with it, but loved the 2 remake, didn't like the 3 remake, and felt mixed about 8. I haven't finished the game yet (on chapter 11 atm) but I'm really enjoying it a hell of a lot and seeing you say it's one of your favourite games you've ever played has me wonder if I'll be saying the same by the time the dust is settled and I've beat it... a few times of course. I'm honestly just happy to get a decently long full game that runs amazingly well and is fun to play in this day and age. Capcom are an absolute gem these days
Man, watching you talking about this game made my day. So much enthusiasm! The first time I played this game I was so scared that I gave up playing. But I was hooked by the setting and gameplay. I hate nostalgia because make us blind to great new things, but seeing this game made me smile so much that I think I'll will finish it this time
As someone who would put the original RE4 among my top 10 games of all time, you don’t know how relieved it makes me to see such a glowing review of the remake. I didn’t even dare to expect it to be this good, because how could it be. Gives me a lot of hope that things will all be alright. Unfortunately I haven’t upgraded my PS4 to a PS5 yet so I won’t be able to play it for now😭. But this is probably going to be the thing that pushes me to finally buy. So thanks for the amazing review Skill Up! 🙏 Keep up the good work!
It's out on PS4. That's what I just finished it on for the second time today. I do think it's much prettier on PS5 tho .. that's what my mate has it on and it's even better.
@@crazywolf68 I played it on PS4 Pro. There's a resolution and FPS mode. FPS targets 60fps. Will the game is pretty smooth, there are some burry textures.
"Talk about 'sticking the landing,'" got the biggest laugh out of me than anything else in 2023. This was my first RE game since playing 6 and it was effing amazing. Immediately bought the dlc and RE2 & 3 remakes.
I LOVE TLoU combat and stealth, especially in Part II. It’s some of my favorite gameplay ever. The way it transitions so seamlessly between stealth and open combat, the sheer diversity of options and how dynamically everything can change mid-encounter, along with the super fluid animations and cinematic melee attacks is totally captivating to me. All you have to do to remedy the “game not pushing you to engage with all of the mechanics” is up the difficulty. It’s that simple. On Survivor and above, ammo and resources are incredibly scarce and enemies are so perceptive and persistent that stealth becomes a terrifying and delicate dance. Playing on Survivor and then Grounded in both games, each encounter was a nail-biting, tense, dynamic experience where I used every mechanic available to me and pulled through by the skin of my teeth…
His point was that RE4 remake does a better job at pushing your limits in standard difficulty, hardcore and professional. So if you are saying that the solution for tlou is to up the difficulty, then he is not being wrong about it. In fact, he is very much right as I experience the same thing playing tlou vs re4 remake for the first time.

elden ring is a specific niche in gaming. Some people don’t like the lack of story telling, cutscenes, npcs, towns, and traditional staples of many other rpgs.

You really should play the original just to get a full picture/context of why this remake is so good.
@@Nighhhts i will once i 100% the remake
a frien will borrow me his ps5 to play this, and before that, i went to refresh my memory with the original, i did not remember this game being so old, it came out in 2005, but i might have played it on 2007/8 since games in my country arrived late, and i only could play it at my cousin's house, and since then, never touched it again, and the game, i dont know how, but it feels timeless, yes, the "no walking while shooting" is a thing, and shooting with square is weird to the modern era of controls, but is just amazing how the game holds so fresh after so many years, and the pacing is immaculate.
When he reunites with Ashley after fighting the monster and she asks if he is okay, he responds “I’m fine, you were right about them having animals here”
It’s both a badass thing to say, and Leon protecting Ashley from the truth to avoiding her feeling even more afraid.

Excellent review! I think you really illustrated why RE4R is such an outstanding success in terms of game design. One minor nitpick though...Leon was working with local Spanish law enforcement in order to locate the president's daughter. Hence the reason he isn't getting a massive amount of support from the start.

Stop trying to analyze it. It’s just that the voice actress can’t act. It’s not that deep lol

100%. I did my first playthrough on grounded and every encounter was phenomenal. It was crazy difficult at times but very much worth it.
Leon’s one liners had me cracking up every time despite how cheesy they were. “Where’s everybody going? Bingo?”. Classic.
His original dialogue is way better though
I laughed so hard at that line after that insane opening of chaos it was the perfect line
This is the first review I've seen to capture my exact feelings. Killer review and one of my favorite games ever too!
I play the og once a year. I love every single version of this game including the VR. Maybe it's just nostalgia or my own bias but I truly believe the remake is one of the best video games I've ever played. I'm on playthrough 9 now 😂😂
I did 5 runs in the first three days of it being out, after having another day off I’m currently finishing my 6th play through on my way to platinum.
May I ask, out of curiosity . How do you manage the time?
@@AksamRafiz no kids
I also really like the way they changed some moments in the story, like how now Krauser is the one who kills Luis instead of Saddler. I didn't see it coming and it fit everything more perfectly. Also they did a great job at giving Luis more spotlight, I felt his dead way more than in the original.
Ralph captured the exact reason I was so excited for Village. Every single part of the game shouted out RE4 to me.
Re4 was one of those special games. Many fond memories, played through like 3 times one summer. Can’t wait to pick up the remake.
I like Ada's new VA also. I'm glad you didn't roast her like everyone else.
I thought she was fine not perfect but fine
8:15 The credits on the original version are quite depressing actually. They are a bunch of paintings of the village people. Working, playing guitar and kids playing around. Then Saddler comes and brainwashes everyone and exploits all these humble people for power. It may not be the most deep writing but the setting is pretty sad if you think about it
This game is a super fun ride. Graphics, sound design, music, characters, overall presentation, just fantastic stuff! And the fact that there is a new game plus and you can unlock new skins via just playing the game with no microtransactions is just awesome. It feels like the good old days.
I don't usually replay a game that I finished unless it's like 1 year apart
But doing a second playthrough trying to do it as fast as I can is surprisingly fun
just wait until you unlock some of the overpowered special weapons lol
Speedrunning is the true endgame for Resident Evil 😂
im a simple man. i just enjoy 30 straight minutes of completely agreeing with everything skill up says
And now? 3 games a year?
Fun fact, the voice actor that does the voice for Ada in RE4R also played Ada Wong in the Welcome to Racoon City movie.
Sure enough! That’s amazing
Ah, so that makes sense why the VA for Ada in the remake isn't so good.
Makes sense. That movie was awful.
18:06 Minecraft chase hehehehehehe nice
Leon is one of the best video game characters of all time imo. He's in my top 3, and he's certainly not third
Beautiful and well written video essay. Thank you for this in-depth look at the remake.
your video is such a love letter to my top 3 game of all time
RE4 has always been my all time favorite ever since my first playthrough back in 2006.
Man, it always brings a smile to my face when I hear Shillup getting excited about a game. You can really feel how much he enjoyed this one ❤
Best part about it, was when you could tell he was having a hard time containing his joy at times lol.
No spoiler warning??? Really? I could not finish watching this.
I thought the exact same thing you did! This game felt like if Kojima made an MGS spin off with a survival horror twist.
Nah. The action is there, but this story isn’t complicated enough to be Metal Gear.
@@Mojo1356 True. Def missing plot elements and themes
@@jlg442 also, this game doesn’t allow for non lethal kills.
I haven't made it to the regenerators yet, but I know I'll be screaming once I arrive lol.
I feel like I’m slightly missing something. Finished the game today and while it’s absolutely excellent and I really enjoyed it, I don’t quite understand how people are making it out to be one of the best games ever. I guess it’s just not quite my thing as I’m clearly in the minority
You're not wrong, it's a good game, but far from flawless. People are just sucking Capcom's D a bit too hard.
Just polished and uninspired. People won’t be gassing it up in less than a year.
This video's title should be, Post modernism is killing good writing, from Books and movies to comic books, videogames and music.
And nothing compares to a good old fashion, blast from
the past.
100% agreed!
You absolutely hit the nail on the head and articulated my feelings towards this remake and the series as a whole after this. They need to understand their characters like Leon and villains like Krauser are what made us fall in love with this series and only take it to new heights. Can't wait for what's next.
18:06 "Minecraft chase" Woah it's got a what!?!
Re4 used to be my favorite game of all time and now it's Re4
Capcom are an absolute gem these days
best one is code veronica.
@@shaggytoph re1 remake is better don’t you think?
@@shaggytoph Code Veronica was... decent.
@@dixon_481 Wait really? I heard from somewhere that it was next gen only. Well then, guess Ill have to get to a store ASAP.
I agree, he was swinging and missing on that
His point was that RE4 remake does a better job at pushing your limits in standard difficulty, hardcore and professional. So if you are saying that the solution for tlou is to up the difficulty, then he is not being wrong about it. In fact, he is very much right as I experience the same thing playing tlou vs re4 remake for the first time.
But you are not explaining how it is pushing your limits
@@J0HnNyX Maybe you should play it and find out so people don't have to explain to you even further how a game works, even tho the video summarized it perfectly in detail already.
Unless your goal was to be purposely disingenuous then you are doing it right
@@sept09 um, i do play this game even on professional. All I asked is to explain HOW it pushes YOUR limits. You got so defensive over that and it shows that this game is not so special after all
