      Also, Memory Beta's contradictions mainly occur because it has no canon tier system to classy articles into, so articles and timelines can end up becoming an awkward hodgepodge of competing stories and rival timelines, especially regards novelverse into ST: Online.

    “Why is Kira named Kai?”
    Let’s put it this way: let’s say we needed a new Pope and there was someone on hand who could prove that she had worked, fought and hung out with Jesus.

      "There are those who seek power & those who have power thrust upon them."
      Also, "Those who want to lead are usually the worst choice TO lead."
      Kira would most definitely be nick-named "the reluctant Kai" & been a terrific one. (I think)
      I also would not be surprised if she made it a point to "clean up" the pleasant distortions of history. (even if doing so was not well received) Like how Vedick Berial was the driving force behind the peace treaty with Cardassia, and how Kai Winn fell to the Pah Wraiths. Giving an honest assessment of Sisko (the Emissary), and so on.

    One minor correction; you said Sisko had DS9 moved to the mouth of the wormhole to claim it for the Bajoran people. It was actually Kira, with help from O’Brien, that moved the station. Sisko was in the Gamma Quadrant/talking to the Prophets with Dax at the time. The first he knew of the station being moved was when he towed Gul Dukat’s ship back through.

    I think Kira as a Kai would make somewhat sense, given her closeness to the Emissary. With her being that close and him gone, many would look to her for guidance, believing that she was so close, he must've imparted at least some of his wisdom to her.

      Never played the game, but I'd see that as a transition job for her to prevent more radical candidates to take power at a time when Bajor needed stability the most. Kyra is definitely the type of character onto whom you'd put responsabilities of power because they don't want it in the first place.

    I could actually see Kira go into the priesthood. ALOT of preachers in te Wild west era were made up of former soldiers, bandits and gunslingers. Kira having fought for Many years and has always had a somewhat or very close relationship to vedeks and the organization. If the vedeks kept being elected into government positions being faithful and serving in a government support role would not be out of the question. Also, people grow older and change, sometimes into positions or places you'd not expect.

    4:41 In the episode "Hunters" on Star Trek: Voyager, all remaining members of the Maquis were pardoned in 2374 so they could help in the war against the Dominion. Presumably Ro Laren was one of them. So it wouldn't make sense that she was still in prison unless it was on charges unrelated to being a member of the Maquis.
    On a related note, it bugged me that they killed off Captain Hudson. It would have been really cool if he made another appearance on Deep Space 9. A Sisko & Hudson episode where they team up and kick the living crap out of the Dominion would have been cool.

    If I recall, Kira becoming a Vedek (now a Kai) is based on an actual DS9 episode, where she gets a vision from one of her interactions with an Orb of the Prophets, which predicts her becoming a member of the religious order. Maybe STO used that for the basis of Kira becoming Kai?

    Bajor (and a lot of the Alpha Quadrant) plays a lot in the end game levels of STO. The mission "Of Bajor" in The 2400 FE series (Lost Dominion) showcases a lot of the 2410 Bajor.

    Yes and yes. I was always interested in the period just after the war. A time for reorganizing not retribution. First finding the collaborators. I suspect that would be their next step. Finding those responsible and bringing them to trial and charging them for their war crimes by a Bajoran court. Surely worthy of the Kai and emissary to lead the people into the future.

  • @williamozier918
    @williamozier918 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Personality wise it does seem odd that Kira would become Kai. However when you stop and think that she works on the Gateway to the Celestial Temple, she was the right hand of The Emissary, she helped find Bhalla, and she once hosted a Prophet in the physical battle with the Kost Amajon who's shockwaves caused earthquakes all across Bajor, it would totally make sense that Bajorans would want her to be Kai, she is the actual real deal of their religion.

  • @jamchiroptera4258

    I could see Kira becoming a vedek, maaaaaybe.If she became Kai, i think it would be a very similar situation as Sisko becoming the emissary. Like Worf said(after finally killing bug-eyes), “great men do not seek power, it is thrust upon them”. Which is actually a recurring theme i hadn’t noticed until recently. Sisko, Damar, Rom, Martok, and Kira all went thru this.

  • @DavidMacDowellBlue
    @DavidMacDowellBlue 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would posit her study to become a Vedek after teh Dominion War is part of her continued effort to deal with her pretty extreme PTSD (as the authors and actress confirmed--she has been fighting, killing, seeing death & atrocities since she was a child). Her faith ultimately gave her enormous comfort, especially as she found ways to make her own interpretation of what the Prophets were to her and what they offered. She is a natural warrior, a fearless and fierce defender of her people--and in a fundamental way that was something she never wanted to be. Or, maybe that was something she deeply regretted having had to become.

    There are a couple of lines in STO, some sadly not in the game anymore, that point to why Kira became Kai.
    From what I remember it was simply because there were fights, assassinations, riots etc. because the other Kai hopefuls were trying to start a mini civil war, just to get the position.
    The Vedek assembly asked Kira if she would become Kai, as a lot of people thought she was a candidate who had a political stature as she worked with the Emissary and could quiet things down.
    I think Kira accepted the job just so she could stop the infighting.

    I don't know what Gene Roddenberry got his inspiration for the Bajoran religion but it always gave me the impression of being an amalgam of different Faiths. I say this because if you pay close attention you will notice elements and even references to Buddhism, Catholicism, Islam, Judaism and christianity. ( I listed Catholicism and protestant Christianity) on certain episodes it's a little harder to see mainly because the focus is on something nonreligious or just filler.

    Kira has many qualifications that make her a good candidate for being the Kai, even without the attainment thing. She was a close friend and colleague of the Emissary who often sought her counsel on things regarding Bajor. She was chosen by the Prophets to be their vessel during the fight with the Kost Amojan. It seems as if Gul Dukat was in some way the emissary of the Pah-wraiths and she exposed that he had misled and tried to kill his followers, freeing them from his influence. She was the partner of Vedek Bareil who had only lost the election to Kai because of Kai Winn's underhanded methods, and then Winn basically murdered him. When Winn subsequently died trying to free the Pah-wraiths, I'm sure that people would have thought back to her election as Kai with bitterness and regretted that Bareil wasn't elected. When Dukat disguised himself as Anjohl Tennan, Kai Winn went to Kira to figure out what the Prophets would want her to do. Then Winn rejected her advice and nearly destroyed Bajor.

    So if the Bajoran Militia was dissolved, does that mean Ro Laren was reinstated as a Starfleet Officer? I doubt it, but that would take her full circle. I know in a book I read (forgot the title) awhile back she was the CO of the newly, Federation built DS9 that was constructed after, I believe, the Typhon Pact(?) destroyed the old Cardassian built one.

    • @CertifiablyIngame
      @CertifiablyIngame  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So, with her involvement in the Maquis, Starfleet career options are pretty limited so she joins the Militia instead. The Militia is still around, it was never dissolved, it became a customs and police force for Bajor instead while Starfleet took over all the space exploration and combat. As DS9 is still Bajoran property, she remains as Security chief.

    What surprised me is how much of a basket case Bajor still is in the STO timeline. You would think by then people would understand the difference between federation membership and cardassian occupation. Also the lack of a greater in system infrastructure puzzles me. Not just from a defense standpoint considering it's position in the quadrant, but an economic one as well. Newer larger stations, shipyards, early warning sensor platforms and system defense patrols would make more sense than simply letting DS9 do all the heavy lifting. When the Jem'Hadar fleet held in the wormhole poured out they should have found a system with years worth of preparation waiting for them. And subsequently gotten their teeth kicked in by a fleet that has had several decades to adapt and advance compared to the Dominion fleet. It would be like putting a world war two era navy against a vietnam war era fleet.

    From what it sounds like , and from a logistics standpoint . Bajor would make more sense as the Capital of the Federation. Much like how America made Hawaii a state for it's reasoning for attacking japan. In hindsight you don't see Hawaii as some American colony it is an actual state far far away from the mainland for political reasons . No one in Hawaii was even thinking of becoming american .

    In the novel Picard: Last Best Hope, a Bajoran woman named Jocan Koli joins the mission to evacuate as many people as possible from the blast radius of the imminent Romulan supernova, working directly under Admiral Jean-Luc Picard. She keeps Picard and his XO Raffi Musiker in touch with the psychology of evacuated refugees who might be suspicious of a foreign power offering to relocate them somewhere else.
    Unfortunately, Jocan (remember, in Bajoran culture they lead with the last names first) resigns from the mission (and possibly Starfleet as a whole) after a fiasco on Nimbus III where the Tal Shiar show up in force and Picard retreats back to the USS Verity, naively believing that the Tal Shiar will peacefully handle the transfer of the planet's population. They do not- video footage is taken of the Tal Shiar flat-out murdering people on the ground- video footage that is leaked across the Federation and whittles away at the support for the mission itself and leading to resources being scaled back.

    Agreed about Kira. Her becoming Kai is very much like Garak being the leader of Cardassia for a time. The writers just name drop any DS9 character they can think of in a place of importance for the sake of fan service, instead of following the logical story path that would make sense for the character. Kira becoming a Federation captain after makes a lot more sense, given that she was so opposed to the Federation initially but grew a deep respect and trust as time went on. Sisko's friendship really changed her. STO did a decent job with some elements of the Star Trek story, but has a lot of issues in my opinion. Recycling the Federation Klingon war through a shapeshifting species was pretty lazy. Making the Kelvin and Kurztman timelines canon.... that's a crime. Lazily giving every species' ships to the Federation...that's just a huge case of favoritism. Personally, I'd like to see a new story that picks up after DS9 and carries on properly. The best part of STO so far, has been fighting in Klingon hell. I have to admit, I never thought of that as a story, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

    I wouldn't really consider the differences between STO and the "Novel Verse" contradictions as much as just differences because STO from the start established that the universe of the novels or the "destiny timeline" is an alternate reality to itself the STO version of temporal agent Dulmur for instance is said to have memories from other timelines get mixed up in his head such as the destruction of Vulcan from the "Kelvin timeline" and the massive Borg Invasion from the "Destiny timeline" there for establishing both as equally valid but alternate realities within STO's Multiverse.
