Is it mad to buy a BMW E63/E64 6-Series in 2021?

  • I've been driving the BMW E64 6-Series 650i for over six years and this Buyers Guide won't pull any punches. As soon as anyone mentions the E63 or E64 you will always hear 'valve stem seals' from drivers of lesser cars!
    More details on repairs: www.meeknet.co.uk/E64/Index.htm
    What is the truth about about these problems in 2021, leaking gaskets everywhere, valve stem seals and the coolant transfer pipe? My E64 has covered 125,000 miles and, although it does leak a little oil it is just as powerful and good-looking as it was when it came out of the factory.
    These can now be found on Ebay for under £5000 / $5000 with less than 100,000 miles on the clock. Are you going to be throwing your money down the drain? What are the chances of something major going wrong - and are there any methods of avoiding these problems?
    This In-Depth Review and full Road Test shows you how the 650i performs, with its 4.8 Litre V8 power-plant, what interior comforts it has, how it performs on the corners and its straight-line grunt. I also compare the performance with my 840ci with 100 BHP less and a few years more driving.

Now my 2015 range rover on the other hand....bmw is 8 years older with 90 000 miles more than RR and the Range is a endless money pit..suspension issues, electrical issues, supercharger croaked...

      @Kassiusday if you use the right oils, coolants, fuel injection cleaner etc the car will be good..check that the model you're buying has full service record..the E63 bmw's also tend to not warn you when coolant level is low..so check that regularly.

    Thank you, Tim. You always provide informative videos so that you for the great reviews and please keep them coming. I bought a used 2008 BMW 650i (E63) almost 5 years ago with 95,000 miles on it and I still love it to this day. It is a (rare) manual version and every time I take it into the dealership for servicing, they always mention what great shape it's in and ask me if I want to sell. I now have 128,000 miles on the car and it still pulls and handles well. I've only had to replace a few things such as new tires, a water pump and just recently had the break lines flushed and an oil change. Great stuff, Tim.

    Thanks for the overview Tim, yours is a love 6. I think these have aged really well.
    I have an M6 and it is a great thing to drive. I did find a manual 650i and was very tempted, but it was pricey and strayed to far into M6 money, so I went the whole hog into M car territory. Your video on the drains blocking has been very useful already.
    I wouldn't dismiss those 335i / 335d quite so readily, I had a 335i and it would shift very well in the low to mid rpm range. Not as nice as a V8 (or V10 in my case), but the turbo 6 cylinders are quite potent.

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it was a 335d - I could tell by the puffs of black smoke it was giving out! My point was that BMW stick M-Sport on all sorts of models these days - and they really don't live up to the marque! For a three-litre though, they do shift!

    Stunning car to this day, I turn my head every time, I almost bought one several times but the potential problems discouraged me, while they are not comparable to some extent I would probably buy a SC430 instead, but if I had a garage to do my own work I would get the 6-series in a heartbeat

      You don’t need your own garage to buy a 650i, people make it out to be some problematic cars which they really aren’t. As long as you know simple things like doing a oil and filter change your self then I would recommend buying one, you get a lot of car for the money.

      I've also got a 630i. Took a V8 out and despite THAT V8 sound, I found the 3L six pot a teensy bit more nimble, (and probably a teensy bit less thirsty too, probably...). I say 'nimble', but, these are BIG cars. The 6ix never stops feeling like a very big car to shuffle around our UK roads! Mines just in black, but boy is Timms 6ixer gorgeous in that colour!

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Yes, I agree, the 630i is the sensible choice, and with the final diff ratio it should be pretty quick off the line. But, this is my eighth V8 in a row, when I get older I'm sure I'll get more sensible!

    I am so lucky!!! Lucky that I found you that is! Saw a 2004 645ci on the web whilst having a late night drink and bought it blind. I paid £3k for it and could tell the seller was just after a quick sale. I got it home and did my own small service.... oil and filter, coolant, pollen filter, plugs. Came to do the plugs (needed a mechanic to get 2 of them out) and somehow BMW themselves had failed to replace 1 of them so it was only running on 7!!! Did my checks after I should have done and the car has only ever failed 1 MOT (a tyre and brake pads) Its just passed its MOT yesterday and my friend (who I told to be brutally honest with every aspect) bought it back amazed. I have had to educate him and everyone else about the n62 engine as its a "special case". And I only know what I know thanks to your info, so thanks! 31 years in the trade but we have taught him a thing or 2 about the specific engine!... European road trip planned for September in style. Thanks Tim! I have had him rip it to bits looking for faults and potential issues based on your videos and he managed to find that the thermostat sometimes got stuck. As a result in its history and good condition it is having a full respray. heels refurbed and a stainless custom exhaust (he has a business dealing with modern day sports cars). I would love to show you the results! Thanks!

    I've owned (and still own) an LCI facelift version of the e63 650 Sport coupe auto, for 9 years, during which time I've covered 60k miles.
    Throughout that time, the car has been impeccable, with no issues whatsoever... so I'm a bit mystified when I hear the odd criticism about the 4.8l engine... I think it's fantastic.
    The only gripe was that it took me about 6 years and 45k miles to get the seat in the perfect position for me! (But, that was my own fault.)
    I'm only the second owner and it came to me in mint condition, with a full service history.
    I've kept that up, so that it still has a fully stamped up service book, by one of the best independent 'BMW whisperers' in the UK.
    Aside from two (treated) stone chips, the bodywork is 100% immaculate. No dings and no scratches anywhere.
    I had the paint 'surveyed' by a BMW paint expert who informed me that none of the panels have ever been resprayed.
    It has gleaming silver coachwork with 'chateau' ('oxblood') interior (not 'funeral black'). And, it lives, nice and safe and cossetted, in my garage.
    All factory original spec and unmolested; just as at it should be. It was £71k new and I've actually got a copy of the original sales receipt to prove it!
    I've since added other V8, V12 and 'hot' V6 engined cars to my collection. But when I go to my garage to choose which one I want to use that day, I still look forward to driving the 650; I will never part with it.
    My advice: Right now they're as cheap as they will ever be. They are reliable and comfortable. And I get lots of admiring nods and glances from other motorists (and even non-motorists). If you see one with FSH; snap it up.
    And, from an investment perspective, bear in mind that they are far rarer than the equivalent Astons, Jags, Porsches and Maserati's and they WILL gain in value in the next ten years or so...
    Happy hunting!

    Very nice video. I have found that six month or 6k, oil changes, two year coolant changes, three year brake fluid changes, and four year ZF transmission fluid, filter, and seal changes are the key to long trouble free engine and transmission life. Because of the low value and the tendency of insurance companies to scrap the car instead of repairing it, many will be lost. This means a good E63/E64, with the last normally aspirated BMW V8, could command a very attractive price in the future.

    Thank you for this very informative video. You share your knowledge and passion for nobel mecanics in a very effective and enjoyable way.
    Maybe a dumb question : would it be detrimental to the engine to install a cooler thermostat (if such existed, Idk) in order to run the engine a bit cooler and hopefully protect the seals?
    I'm probably going to buy a 635d (coupe or convertible, which first good conditions comes) and came across your video. They stand out of the crowd, as far as longevity goes and through the driving experience they procure. I enjoyed them all more than the others.

    Beautiful machine. Some of the Rolls Royce spirit of ecstacy carries over from 2007 -2010. Dynamic Drive and the Logic 7 Top Hifi audio.... if your really lucky, the Nappa leather and convertable. A steal for 5000 quid if you have the skill to diagnose these machines. Unfortunately, few have the skills. The technology in these cars are 3 deep. Fortunately, Timm is gifted with all this knowledge to prevent owners from making mistakes maintaining and diagnosing these machines.

  • @bertobarto

    The E63 650i along with the E92 M3 are the last dying breed of naturally aspirated V8 motors produced by BMW. I own a 2008 E63 6M. The car with all options went for over $80K new, which shows in the fit and finish of the higher quality materials. You can get one for under $10K now which in my opinion is a steal for the quality and performance. Very comfortable cabin and a great sound system if equipped with the Pro Logic 7.

And the motor was overhauled just after I bought it. Side note should I use 0w-30 Castrol or bmw 5w-40? I own a 2005 645 E64 Sport w/ 77k on it now. Bought it 10 years ago with 58k on it. I absolutely love driving it and it is an occasional driver at best. I did the alternator bracket and am hoping to not have to do the stem seals. My oil temp gauge is sporadic and usually takes a long time to register. I noticed that yours was not active during this video. I used your video to change the cabin air filter yesterday and flushed the fender ports under the hood. What a set of invaluable videos! I suspect many of your viewers are like me and ‘considering’ a 6 series ! Let’s be real, the mind is made up, you just don’t want to be the chump that’s buys the bad one. However, the one thing that still eludes me is the difference between SE, Sport and M Sport? I’ve seen cars advertised as M Sport. I’ve seen cars advertised as Sport but then in the description billed as M Sport….. I’m particularly interested in the ride (not withstanding RFT which are an abomination!) so my question really is; is Sport (as given in many advertisements) actually the same as M Sport and, crucially, is the ride hard? I’d be grateful for information from you, Timm or any of my fellow viewers. Many thanks.

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good questions Phil, the 650i E63 and E64's are all Sport models, none of them are M-Sport - the M-Sports are made by the Motorsport division, and these are standard production cars. The ride is great, especially compared to my 840ci which is a bit rumbly! Changing the run-flat tyres to Falkens make the ride so much better!
