    Thanks Tim! You gave me confidence, so I just bought a 50K miles (rare) manual 2007 650i in Glacier White. As you mentioned they are more expensive in the U.S. than the U.K. but still remarkable value vs. new cost. Mine has the full leather dash, winter package, 20' wheels and upgraded stereo - lovely interior and difficult to believe it is 14 years old. The only thing that gives it away is dated iDrive, CD changer in glovebox and somewhat dated mirrors. The mid-range acceleration is intoxicating, yes - it can do 0-60 in a hurry but it almost feels indecent. It compliments my 2017 330i wagon (estate) daily driver.

    Just saw one in a garage this afternoon and didn't know all these tips. I declined the offer because of not regular idle rpm (not 700 to 1300 but not straight 700 as I expected).

    I love watching your videos on BMWs even though I haven't owned one for about 15 years. My e320 mercedes has 152k miles and the engine runs smooth as silk. Doesn't seem to burn any oil. I should check on the coolant. I have never ascertained if I have the correct type for it. I like the smoothness of it even though it has the 'AMG sport appearance package with shorter stiffer springs.
    Mercedes doesn't use struts, on most models, so I do remember the 530i I had handled much better.
    Maybe when my mercedes gives up the ghost I'll look for another BMW.
    Love your videos!

      These cars are extremely fickle. I thought I had also bought a lemon 2004 645ci vert about 10 years ago. Constant issues the first year of ownership. With a bit of patience, research, and low cost DIY repairs I still have that car and she performs 100 X better at 110k miles than she did when I bought her with 69k on the odometer.
      She's still a little quirky once in a while with throwing lambda codes but 8 times out of ten she's a good driver.

    • @DiZZoLabs
      @DiZZoLabs 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@gotmylk I agree. I bought an 06 650i with 72k. BMW had to do the valve seals free to me. So that was that. At 120k I had to change the mechatronic solenoids. Every time i fix a coolant hose another starts leaking. As for a drivers car. She's just as nice as Tims but I deleted the mufflers and now she sounds like drivers car....

    • @gotmylk
      @gotmylk 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DiZZoLabs I've always debated the muffler delete on mine. They do sound good without them. I have a C5 Corvette with full "race" exhaust (Kooks long tube headers and off road xpipe through Borla Stingers) for when I want to make noise and drive fast. So kept the 645 more refined.

    Hi Timm, new to your channel and greatly impressed with this review/tech check,
    Always very wary of mechanical soft top roof cars, a friend of mine bought an Audi convertible and the roof went sour in the first month of ownership.
    The car had to be low loader delivered to repairer with the roof half up, and that is a quality car so wary, as the saying goes, OK whilst it's working!
    The BMW M6 I used to own had probs with water in boot with the battery half submerged, the cabin area was fine.
    The front axle had a section of the alloy break off and that cost a lot to replace and I was informed that it was not my fault!
    So beware, the M6 went and looking at 650i now but still having doubts after warnings from you guys on line as to engine probs, perhaps I will just stick to my 30 year old 325, cost hardly anything apart from servicing in the 24 years I have owned. Well done on this, great viewing and superb car.

    Thanks Timm for the straightforward guide...just wondered a coupel of things - first about how important it is to start the car from cold both for smoke and checking inside the oil cap and second about checking electrics, beyond seeing things work are there any other electrical gremlins. thnaks for all the info, gives me some reassurance about goin gout looking for one...

      @@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation After inspection, the story here is one of neglected maintenance.
      I could not get the oil cap off, but the (low) coolant appeared to be green. Cosmetically a bit neglected but no body damage or rust. Both upper headlights (turn signals?) were very loose. Molding around the windshield rotted and wiper blades needed immediate replacement. Windshield sprayer not working - not sure if it was the pump or just no fluid. Needed windshield washer fluid and wiper blade refills.
      Interior was a bit tired although no tears. Many cracks on the upper dash (car was from a hot climate). No evidence of water leaks but I did not check thoroughly. Started well, no smoke (I did the steam/smoke test.). BUT, as soon as I put it in gear, transmission malfunction warning. I drove it a mile up the highway under reduced power, turned around, and drove back. I may have tried to buy it cheap if not for the trans failure. Pretty sure the guy would have sold for $5000USD, but the trans failure is just too scary, so I passed. 🙁
      I did not try the top or windows due to the transmission having already scared me off.
      Finally, the ergonomics of the car were very claustrophobic compared to my E38. Difficult to see sides and rear with the top up, with small side view mirrors.

    I was very interested about the bmw 630i, but I do not understand the differences between this model and the 635/645/650.
    Can you tell me if the 630 would be in some way 'cheaper' than the other models, and which one you prefer?!

      Hello Davide, it's all about weight and performance - if you want the same performance as a 650i then you would use the same amount of fuel in any car weighing about the same. Of course, you don't get the same performance in a 630i - but that's the point, if you want performance get a 650i - and then you have the option of saving fuel by driving slower - you don't get both options with the 630i!

    Great video Timm, I changed the gearbox in mine 90k miles , much smoother change. Always change 'sealed for life' BMW gearbox oil at around 80k, had a 535 and X5 boxes go at 100k.
    Need to check all those points on my car now!

    Good morning Timm. I love this video. I will actually be looking at a 2008 650i convertible tomorrow. Midnight metallic blue with saddle brown interior. I will be playing this video as My Wife and I inspect the car. This car has 88,000 miles on it, and according to the Car Fax report it has been very well maintained, it has not however had the transmission fluid changed. If the car shifts buttery smooth, should I go ahead and have the transmission fluid and mechatronic seals replaced as a preventative measure, or wait until I notice even the slightest bit of hard shifts? Thanks a million for your great advice.

    Just bought a 2008 E64 650i, greyish/blue with black hood and very nice it is too. I must say, watching all your videos convinced me to go for the 4.8l instead of the 3.0l and very glad I did. One thing that I must address is the very long accelerator pedal, it seems like you put your foot about 20% down and not much happens, then vroooom..! I was thinking of getting a gearbox and engine remap from DMS to give it some extra response, thoughts ?

      The throttle control is adaptive, once you start giving it some welly it will get a lot more responsive! The car needs to drive like a luxury car sometimes, hence the long pedal until you start pushing it.

    Thinking of getting one. I’m a bit worried because in a crash over a decade ago and the Carfax doesn’t show any major upgrades to parts such as the ones you’ve mentioned…. maybe I won’t get it then.

    Hello Timm,
    watching your video I just get an impulse to go down to the garage and have a look at the timing-chain in my 650 cab, cause my last Oil-Change must be years ago...
    => ...is it a "bad sign", if the aluminum of the bearing-housing beside the chain is still clear (and looks silver-grey like aluminum-cast is looking when it's new) => so mine has no "golden curtain" in front? (...as seen in your video ;-)
    My 650 is from 2006, bought it in 2010 with 60.000km and drove it until 2013 up to about 90.000km
    Since then I only drove few 100km per year = about 5.000km in total (due to wife, kids, house, garden, etc :-)
    Watching your clip I got feelings to change my oil immediately => but looking at the attached sticker "...last Oil-Change in 2015" => I think I can rest down for one year and reach the "Decade" ;-)
    P.S.: nice Color of yours (it's "Barbera rot metallic", right ?) - mine is "Malachit-Grün" (would say: black-green-mineralic-flittering) with black "Pearl-Leather"
    E64's are like good wines - the older they get - the better they are !!!

I had to try to jump it yesterday. No response. I’ll get a interstate battery for it but I will say there is nooo coolant in there

    Great video as always! Is mileage a big enough factor if the car is properly maintained? What mileage is too high for a 650i?

    • @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
      @TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Georgi! Higher mileage is usually better as it means more regular oil changes. Mine is at 125,000 miles!

    I bought a 2008 650i with 85k Very clean, I did all the checks on it, A week later when I was driving it to work, I got a message on dash engine is hot, I tried to come off the exit then message said engine over heating seconds later the coolant reservoir exploded denting my hood. The car is currently at the shop getting checked. I hope it is not something expansive or an engine issue.

      Hopefully not, if it was overheating then either the water pump failed or the fan did - both reasonably cheap.
