That was a very encouraging review. I’ve not bought mine yet but I’ve been watching hundreds of reviews and had come to the same conclusions as you regarding making the improvements - apart from adding extra lights or fog lamps and a lighter exhaust to go along with the cam and sprocket. I’d also decided that I need to learn to do as much as possible to the bike myself and I need to find a way to get tuition. I respond best to someone showing me how to do things properly and then repeating them often enough so that the knowledge sticks and I can do it faster. This bike is very attractive to me. It’s the first bike I’ve seen in the last 40 years that has soul. I fell in love with it as I began learning about it and about a month ago, I saw a white one in the flesh and I thought it looks even more beautiful in real life. It reminds me of my first bike, which was a 1978 Yamaha XT500. Now that bike had soul. I’d buy one if they still made them. I had that in SA and I’ve been living in England since ‘83. I had a CB750 which was great, but when I discovered the Himalayan, it reignited my love of riding again. I’ve blathered on so long and probably curled up the ends of your socks with boredom, so I’ll shut up now, except to say thank you for your enjoyable and informative review. It was fun to watch. Great video. Uk rider here, have 2019 Himalayan, so impressed have now bought additional RE, namely a Meteor 350. My ZX-11 and CB500S seem now to be garage queens. RE bikes have SOUL.
I have seen "all" Himalayan reviews. Also some 10 pros and cons after 500 Miles or something. But really, your review has the most background based on the long distance travelled but also based on your experienced and down to earth riders style. Thank you for sgaring this experience. And yes I also still love my Himalayan more each day after four years.

Love your review. Just brought my new Himmy home from Vegas over one week ago. I live in St George area. I’m older now & don’t need the DR650 any longer. This will fit my needs, wants, & style of riding in my life’s chapter perfectly. Looking forward to doing my own 1st oil change & valve adjustment myself. Love to tinker. The TEC cam looks good so I’ll probably add that. Waiting for it to warm up a tad more before I can get er broke in. Cheers & thanks for your honest comments.
Thank you for the comment. I think you'll come to love the Himalayan more all the time. The DR650 is a great bike and one of very few I'd consider if my balance shifts more to long distance on the highway while still having awesome offroad capability. The Himalayan just makes everything easy. It is a joy every time I climb on it and Izzy loves it too.
Thanks for the down to earth review, it's the perfect bike for me with my 60 year old bad back, short 29 inseam and my nickname from some friends is captain slow so need I say more lol. But I will.... I have ridden and owned everything from a Honda Express to a Harley Fatbob but today I traveled home with my new Himalayan in my van (snow here) €4600 on the road winter price. Any issues or upgrades on the 22' you recommend? In the market but not sure what year but seems like the 19' is easy upgrades.
I’m in my mid 60’s and I bought a Honda 2010 NT700 as a project to learn how to work on bikes. It’s has complicating systems, but I am learning a whole lot. I’m enjoying riding again and tackling maintenance issues more than expected. I’m getting in shape for a cross country ride this summer. ✌️✌️👍👍
I had an NT700V and really enioyed that bike. A little complex but easy valve adjustments and a shaft drive makes life nice and it has a great motor. Enjoy the ride

Hi Steve,I enjoyed your review,and a very honest one, for a very honest bike, mine is a 21model, I'm 63 now so speed doesn't interest me no more, I sold my interceptor for the Himalayan and all my anxiety when with it, basically out here in the west of Ireland, it's horses for courses we say, while we don't have a lot of off road, we do have some awful roads, with yss suspension it's not as dangerous,sit back enjoy the view..p.s.that booster plug I bought was a wise investment and a Tutoro chain oiler, simple little thing,works great.

Hey Steve! And Izzy! Wow! What a nice review of your experience with the bike and insights re: relays, cam, tires, etc. I've been doing a deep dive on the bike since test riding one of them at Kustom Workz; an RE only dealer in Depew, NY just outside of Buffalo and just digging out from a couple of feet of snow after getting a 5 foot snowfall earlier this season! Let's just say "it's beautiful in the summer!" Don and Jensen run the store. Great, hard-working gentlemen that were awesome to me and my daughter during a day-long visit last spring. I'm sure they'd love to meet you, as would I. They recently expanded their showroom to 5,000 ft². I wonder if they'd see the value, as I do, in inviting you to their dealership as part of a Himalayan promotion. Regardless, in the meanwhile, I'll put you on a pedestal with Robert Pirsig and a well-worn copy of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance! I'll add some images of truly great folks I met in the course of a summer-long visit to Santa Cruz, California in '82 with a trip through sacred lands near the Four-Corners on the way back East, and my tribute to your spirit and knowledge and beauty will be complete. Nice down to earth review. Impressed that you manage the highways which is the only reason I have not pulled the trigger on one. About 10HP more and everyone would want one. I also have a v strom which I love but on the heavy side. Everything's a trade off isn't it?
I loved my VStrom but live on this and really need to simply disappear into deeper stuff to stealth camp. No need to fly over jumps and no need to race down the highway. I found the 21" front wheel is a real game changer vs the Strom. For the price it can't be beat at what it does. If I was to persomally step up financially I woukd go stage 1 for a DR660 which would do what the Himalayan does and more on both sides at a price. I'm waiting on ride reviews and price on the vstrom 800 but I'm sure I cold buy 2-3 Himalayan. Everything is a tradeoff. I want people to either realize they can move this bike or realize it doesn't suit them before they buy it, and that is not the bike's problem. It's really not scary on the freeway. I hear people talk about how traffic is 80+ but you just don't ride in those lanes. This is an amazing motorcycle and i hope I can afford to keep up this riding full time life. The Himalayan helps with the micro budget.
I wanted a cb500x this summer but it was a 6mth wait. I stumbled on the v strom and it took a couple weeks to get my skills back up. It had been 20yrs and I did not realize what I had lost. I put 6000 miles on it since july and it runs like a top. BUT there are times when just doing a u turn on a gravel road loaded is tough because I know I cant pick it up. Right now there are 5-6 2022 RE Himalayans at two dealers and I may pull the trigger after christmas. It would be nice to get a deal but we will see. I was concerned about reliability but overall they seem solid. Nice job with the rebuild by the way. That was unfortunate.
In reference about the deer whistle. They don't really have any effect. Deer hear your motorcycle/car just fine. They don't react because the sound is gradually increasing which doesn't trigger a startle response. If you dropped the bike noise on top of a group of deer they would scatter. I live in Nova Scotia and have dodged a lot of deer. Some of those vehicles had whistles. Great video. Ride on.

I have close to 20k. I have not been the most careful with it. Rode the NV and ID bdr. Broke the frame on a rough Jeep trail, just stick welded it back. Still has lots of adventures left. Death Valley now!

Hi Steve, I was wondering which rok straps you use on top of your tusk panniers? I purchased a set for mine but they are too long. Didn’t see them on your link list. Great video!!
The ones I use on the top are the thinner shorter ones.. amzn.to/3EDkXuT They work well but I also run one of the larger longer ones from the rear rack, diagonal down to the frame. I also attach the thinner ones in a cross pattern. Leave the elastic portion on the outside and the straps on the side against the bike for less stuff hanging down that could tangle if that makes sense. That's an affiliate link so disclosure that I might make a nickel but I would never recommend something that didn't work well. I'm a big Rok straps fan.

my regulator rectifier failed at 17k miles but it was failing at about 15k and i thought of it was other things causing the problem of stalling and not stating, check your rectifier it can be the cause of many things when you have EFI!

Just found your channel as I have narrowed my search down to the Himalayan and the Klr 650 which is a little too tall. As for the Himalayan have you actually removed the tank and done the valves every 3,000 miles?
Yes. There has only been an actual adjustment needed every other time and they seem to be settling in. It's not difficult. I added a disconnect plug in line with the fuel pump electrical line as I found that the hardest thing to disconnect so I just split the line

Hello Steve! Hope all is well. I have an opportunity to purchase a new '22 Himalayans OTD for 6,000. That includes NYS 8% tax, dmv fees, etc, plus a set of RE handguards. I'm wondering what you and your readers think of that price. Thank you so much!
Out the door it doesn't sound bad. They seem to vary a lot around the country. Facebooks north American Himalayan owners group is a wealth of knowledge and there are a lot of dealer recommendations from all over
How much money you put into it so far? Would you buy another 2019 or what year would you buy and why?
I didn't have any maintenance issues other than a fuel pump which is common in every injected bike. I'd buy another for sure but needed to be in cities with high speed left side exits and fast changing lanes which were just too much for the Himalayan's leisurely pace. I have a DR650 now but it lacks that personality and, although super capable, the Himalayan made everything easy and will remain one of the favorites of the 30 some bikes I've owned. I'll be doing a 30,000 mile review on the DR soon and will draw some comparison

A mechanics bike.
It doesn't require much and will cost no more than other bikes should you decide to have it worked on but it is so simple that it brings back the fun of being in touch with your machine. A good way for anyone to be if they plan to leave the beaten path

My bike had a defective battery from the start, they couldn’t get it to hold a charge or start the bike, so they replaced it with a new Japanese battery before it left the showroom. I replaced the relays before they gave me any trouble. The chain didn’t impress me it seemed to be stretching all the time no matter how much I lubricated it. It broke at 16,000 km. I have never driven it hard. I haven’t had a problem with the clutch plates but I have never felt very confident about the clutch.
And what we have here is a real rat bike 😉
