  • Does the "Strega" tradition exist? What's the contemporary Italian witchcraft?
In this video, I will talk about the traditional Italian folk magic, which I systematised in my doctoral research as the Tradition of Segnature.
I will also mention the old and new generations and their different approaches.

I AM SO GRATEFUL I FOUND YOU! I have been searching for year on Italian Shamanism and Folk Magic because I am the grandchild the grandma passed this down to. For my whole life, I knew she taught me "all the things" and I would share that I was a 4th generation Italian Intuitive Medium because I had no other framework for this. But in watching your videos, I was like - wait a minute. ALL of the things you shared happened with my grandma teaching me them or she would pull me close to her while she practiced them in service of others so I could learn. From tea leaf reading, cards, to the removal of the evil eye, the oil and water thing on Christmas Eve, she created and buried curses in the backyard. I just thought she shared the spiritual path with me and all this was all just her Italian superstition but THANK YOU for this because it gives me such a beautiful framework now. She transitioned to an ancestor when I was in my 20s and now I am in my 50s and this means SO much. I even told my Dad (it's his line this is through) and he started sharing what he witnessed of those who taught my grandma. I can't thank you enough. Blessings and prosperity to you.

I had a grandmother who lived in Mangone, but she may have been born near that town. I heard that there were "Maga" in Mangone, and that they used pine bark to cure things. She sent some bark to us when I was a child to cure my bronchitis. Sadly, we lived in Canada and I never knew much about her. I never had chronic bronchitis after that even the doctors warned that I would.

@@drangelapuca Perhaps it was influenced by the immigration that we had of Italians and we ended up adopting these practices in another meaningful way. But for example, my great-grandmother was a healer in her city, gave birth, healed the evil eye (malocchio) but was not seen as a witch (strega), just a healer (Benzedeira), after all her mother was an Indian and her father a dutch and learned to heal because her Indian mother taught her. Many similar aspects, with different characters and facts but always the shamanic aspect involved. Curious !

    • @drangelapuca
      @drangelapuca  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

@@RichardPasquale Even in Italy those vernacular healers are not deemed as 'witches' since the term - in a Catholic country - is still pretty much an insult for older generations. I found evidence of similar practices in Central and Eastern European countries. It'd be interesting to have cross-cultural research on the topic but that would require multiple researchers and lots of funding. Hopefully, academia will acknowledge more and more the value of these studies and make funding easier to get for us!

I wonder if either of you have read the author Umberto Eco? He writes fiction and was a professor of Semiotics at University of Bologna. He wrote a book called Foucault's Pendulum that was my introduction into Esoterica and Occult Studies. It begins with a man born in the Po River valley and at one point after the Italian student movements of the '60s, he and his girlfriend spend time in Brazil. It has been a while, so I can't remember if he concentrates on Benzedeira or Strega, unfortunately. But yeah, i think you both might enjoy his work! It's fun and engaging and, as far as I've seen, well researched and accurate. And I couldn't agree with you two more: were we to study the flow of ideas from, say, Sofia or Sarejevo to Bologna or Napoli to Sao Paolo... Even take folk traditions from further east (like Baku or Tblisi) and trace the families to the Amazon or Andes... What would we get? Would this not better define a person than some DNA swab from 23 & me? Okay, sorry, lol! I tend to go on and on! But thanks for sharing you two!

I've been affected by witchcraft unfortunately and my nonna noticed the signs and a few years back I started developing seizures (non epileptic) and I could hear her reciting prayers (Catholic ones, but she doesn't do magic, she told us to stay away) against the malocchio to try and calm the seizure. She always did that when I was a kid and had massive migraines. She is from the Campania region (Pontelandolfo village).
We also have some aunts-cousins who have been found doing magic, but not for good, lets put it that way.

Thank you for this excellent video. I grew up in South Texas on the US/Mexico border and find your description of Italian Folk magic very similar to the traditions I grew up with. There were Curanderos (healers) and Brujas (witches) and they actually had more in common than differences. They all helped with the evil eye (el mal de ojo) and promised to help you bring good luck into your life. Tarot cards were common as were candles with saints on them. At some point the Santeria tradition made its way into that part of the world so now there is a bit of syncretic saint worship as well. I hope to hear more.

You can't go willy nilly. That should offer the people who need help, some solice.

Now I get it. We have something similar here in Brazil but it's from portuguese origen. We call it "benzimento" and the people who practice are called "benzedeira", normally are old women from the country site or portuguese grandmas from the portuguese clubs. A huge hug from Brazil.

Hi Angela! Your channel is so awesome, it’s been amazing find! I was wondering what the connections between folk magic, ancient pagan cults, and contemporary magic practices. I’m in a classical art school and am SOO fascinated by the complexities and nuances of their rituals and how prevalent cult worship was in everyday life. I understand if you’re too busy to reply or get to this subject. Love your channel and your extensive research!!

Very interesting content once more. I have heard about witchcraft in the Middle Ages but wasn't aware of its applications or current existence until about 2018 when I found a video documenting Romanian witch practices such as making magical potions for both good luck and bad luck, such as mixing water, wine and cat piss to curse someone over a romantic relationship that has failed, or practices to gain money for example mixing wine and orange juice while practicing Tarot. I read books that documented Middle Ages magical practices as well in the past, such as the curse of drinking, were a cup moving in different directions through the wind or being warmer or colder in different sides of the cup would indicate if the Devil was moving through you spiritually and was attempting to harm someone you knew or you yourself. Witchcraft is a interesting practice overall and can go really in-depth, I knew nothing about Stregheria or Segnatore/Segnatori beforehand, and I'm quite honestly interested in its gestures, they remind me of the Mudras from India as well.

As a practicing 1/4 Italian eclectic wild witch whom had never gotten a chance to learn much from my grandmother due to Mormon parents I find this information invaluable. Thank you from the depths of my soul. I am thrilled to find a video about true authentic witchcraft that is not about discrediting other people and what they had been taught. To me witchcraft is always has been and should forever remain a path of empowerment to the individual we may not do everything the same as each other but we allow others their truth, path, and honor of pantheon. Facts are important however they can be made with tact. You are a breath of fresh air and have so much Charisma. I hope you make many more videos on this as well as other topics in regards to Italian culture. I am not sure what abilities I have were passed down from my Scandinavian, British/Celtic, Italian, or Greek but after my father found a book I had when I was 14 about Norse magic my grandmother had to let me know that the Italian family she is from also has witches and that she is also a witch but was not allowed to teach me as it would ruin her relationship with my father. I always giggled when I would spend the night in the morning when she would wake up and come out of the bathroom she would yell so loud it made everyone jump to and we asked what was wrong she would say “I saw a witch! In the mirror” she would laugh so hard after because everyone’s faces when they came to her aid. I feel that she is teaching me from beyond the grave. I hope I can find a coven I can learn more from. I wish that I could’ve got her BOS and journals but my father likely burned anything related to magic craft occult etc.

Really interesting and brought back many childhood memories. My Mum who lived to 98 used to remove the Mallochio. She was from remote part of Messina area of Sicily.
I still remember her performing the ritual using a plate of water and olive oil which would disperse when the curse was lifted. I still don't understand how that would happen and have tried to repeat the exercise with out the words and can't make it happen.
She wouldn't tell me what the incantation was and towards her later years refused to pass it on to anyone as she would often be bed ridden with Migraines after the ritual. She believed by then it was against her religion. People would come from all over Sydney to see her when they weren't well.

I am loving this! I’m from Ferrara, which is a city in the region where segnature have always been called so.. and I (now) find very fascinating how streghe were banished by catholicity however, even very religious people would “get signed” to remove the malocchio (or eye infections 🤷🏼‍♀️). There was this lady in my village who use to sign and my very catholic gradma use to talk about her and go to her when needed… I was very little but, very drawn to it nonetheless
