I read that he had a daughter when he was in college, and it was decided to adopt her out. The little girl who plays Andy's sister in the "Man in the Moon" movie is supposed to be Andy's actual grand-daughter.

I remember watching the Late Night w/David Letterman episode where Jerry Lawler bitch-slapped Andy Kaufmann and it was the craziest thing anyone at that time had seen on tv. Not even Dave knew that Lawler was a part of the bit, he was genuinely scared that Andy was gonna get killed & then Andy goes on a profanity-laced (all bleeped) screed on camera to Lawler, stuff like that just didn't happen on tv back then. It was nutso. I don't think I knew that it was a set-up until the movie came out in the 90's.

It's interesting that Andy Kaufman died of cancer and hardly ever smoked, but he performed in a lot of clubs, comedy clubs, bars, where a lot people smoked. Dana Reeve, Christopher Reeves widow died of lung cancer and never smoked either, she was a singer and she also sang in a lot of clubs where they was a lot of cigarette smoke, makes you realize the danger of second hand smoke Jordan

Jordan, yes I did not "get" Andy Kaufman. I was going through so much negativity in my life at the time (unhappy marriage, stressful job) that I couldn't find ANYTHING to laugh about. I think now that my life is much more enjoyable (divorced, retired) that I would really enjoy his humor. Thanks so much for the insight into Andy, and it's very sad he died so young. I believe that.. he spent a lot of time in that van. Roddy piper told me after a wrestling match Andy was waiting outside by his van because he wanted to meet roddy so bad.. roddy said he got in the van and went and hung out with Andy all night

Agree with you. Being old enough to have seen his SNL appearance (when it happened) and being a fan of Andy's, I was disappointed with the movie. I thought Jim being a great impressionist would knock this out of the park but he did a over-acted performance. Jim lost the subtle nuances that Andy had. Jim's performance was to nutty. Eyes darting everywhere, an unnatural speech pattern. When you watch old interviews, Andy spoke normally. Andy didn't resell his jokes or bits, that was the magic, it seemed real with Andy. With Jim, he was doing a 'wink wink' here comes the set up/punchline.To each their own but the movie sadly disappointed me.
