I grew up with Daniel, we called him Danny. We used to hang out in his parents basement. He would play his piano, and I would sit and play my guitar. He never displayed any strange behavior when I was with him. His art work was eccentric and strange, but as a teen ager we loved it. He was one of the best friends I ever had.
A lot of times, I have read, the issues he suffered from don't show themselves until the early 20's
@@DazewithJordantheLion he did have them. but as a teenager you wouldn't have really recognized them. I use to stay at his house and his Mom would make us breakfast and lunch and he would stay all night at my house. Under the staircase there was a room full of his exotic art work, things like a baby doll head nailed to the wall and different things done to it and all his crazy art work, it was like stepping into his mind. I remember it was the last time I seen him before I left for the Air Force, he showed me his under the staircase room and whe looked at each other eye to eye and I remember thinking " I wonder what is going to happen to him" I knew he wasn't right mentally, but there had to be a place in this world for such an artist as Danny. Back then before he snapped, he was an excellent artist. His art work was highly detailed and sophisticated. Genius level I think. Last time I seen him was in New Orleans. I surprised him after not seeing home for forty years. I said Hello Mr. Johnston I am a big fan of yours. " HE LOOKED UP AND SAID jOHN YOU GOT BIG.!
Hhe remembered all the things we did as kids some things I had forgotten, but the Danny I knew was gone buried deep in his mental illne. We went across the street and I sat across from him eating a sandwich. He sat there with his head down getting food and drink allover his shirt. His brother Dick said saniel I have to go back to the theater stay here with Joh, Danny panicked and was afraid to be without dick. I cried as I remembered the youthful Danny that was my best friend. He hugged me when the concert was over and said don't worry I will take care of you as I told him about the time he gave me the tape and how my parents were kicking me out at that time. He still loved me as we did when we were best friends as kids and I still loved him.

The first time I heard 'Story Of An Artist' I was floored. So glad you stopped here. I had no idea both parents had passed. I hope one day Richard Linkletter makes a bio-pic of Daniel Johnstons life. He's one of the few directors I think could do his life justice on screen.

I went to high school at Oak Glen in Chester West Virginia with him.. in fact my senior yearbook has a lot of his drawings in it because he drew for the yearbook staff... He was a very talented guy but very disturbed

They met again after about 25 years and had a quick chat and a hug but then they never met up again. There is a short clip on TH-cam somewhere of them meeting up after all that time away.

Wow, I didn't know that Daniel had passed. Back in Oct of 2013, me and my friend Jaime got to go see him play at the Exit/In in Nashville. Our late friend Dave Cloud opened for him, so we were on the guest list, the place was packed. Jaime got to hang out with Daniel backstage after the show... He invited her to come back to his hotel room, but she declined. She got the " Hi How Are You TShirt", I think he signed it for her.I' ll have to tell her to watch this video. At the end of the show, Daniel said, " I hope true love finds you" I hope it found Daniel too Thanks Jordan☺💝🎆

I have never heard of him, but, as usual, you have a great way of telling a story and giving history to people. I was crying at the end. So sad that his life seemed tortured. Rest well now Daniel. Footnote: Not a big deal Jordan. You stated he was 62 when he died. I was born in 1960, I'm 60. Daniel was born in 1961. He would have been 57 when he died.

What a great tribute DWJL, you always have the right touch with your tributes. Your homages you present are thoughtful, interesting, done passionately with respect. I never heard of this Artist before. Daniel a man given more challenges than most have experienced within their lives. He was a man that gave the world his heart and enormous talents. It was compelling to find out about the music he created that had such a big impact with future artists and admirers of Daniel in resent times.

Music & video ( art ) were his escape from the demons inside him. His attempt to express his confused feelings. The arts gave him a sense of purpose & satisfaction.
Daniel Johnston was gifted by God to draw and write songs. Too bad his mom couldn’t see that his gifts were God given. What a roller coaster life he had. Didn’t know anything about him before. Thank you, Jordan for telling us about him. May he RIP .

Carnival worker but almost died, went get help at Church and worked at McDonald's. Black number 9 and lived with wrong diagnosis of mediations, lived back at his parents because his insanity. The devil in Daniel Johnston documentary. Curt kobain wearing his artwork helped gain some recognition and helped him. Such a prolific writer and musician, Mark of Sparklehorse liked his work too! What a cult icon.

Such a sad story. Like a lot of brilliant artists in history, his brain was half genius and half madness. I don’t remember if the documentary mentioned it, but it’s probable he had some severe autism. I’ve read tons about it because my son has level 1 ASD, I see some similar characteristics of Daniel in my son

Daniel Johnston's story reminds me a bit of Christian Weston Chandler's, although Daniel had some actual talent and was a much nicer person.
