    Thank you so much! I (had) a friend who's in the gutter business. He's promised for 4 years to do my 8' section with a down spout. He even told me what materials to get, and to add a 2x4 piece to the wood to the wood that's already there-I am tired of waiting and reaching out. ($$$ must not matter to him. :)). So, I have an extension ladder and all the materials. I didn't know what to do with some of the pieces but after watching your video, I think I can tackle it like a champ. I already said it, but another heart-felt, thank you. I should have looked this up long before now.

    Thank you for the instructive video. A couple notes: 1) Screwing or even just gluing the seams may void any product warranty as vinyl gutters are made to expand and contract when installed per instructions with the correct manufacturer suggested fittings. Probably okay, definitely a better seal, but something to consider where temps range widely. 2) The manufacturer-suggested hanger spacing for most vinyl guttering is 2' in low snow/no snow areas, and 18" where higher snowfall is expected. 2'-3' might be fine, but, at over 2', you have more confidence in the product than those who make them. 3) Drop for gutters is between 1/8" to 1/2" per ten feet in most climate zones in the US, 1/2" being for very heavy rain zones. For most areas, 1/4" per 10' is fine, with one downspout for every 30' of run. Lastly, for those dealing with square-cut tails resulting in a canted fascia, there is a gizmo called a 'gutter fixer'. I am on a project now where the original installer used 2 -1x rippers to level the old galvanized gutter, one toward the bottom and a narrower one at the top. The problem was that they held the gutter out too far from the drip edge, and trapped water between the gutter and the fascia eventually caused a rot situation.

      I'm guessing you're an engineer like me. I've installed the same vinyl gutters on two houses now, getting ready to do another 60 ft run and 20 ft run. I did have the canted fascia on my current house and I saw those wedges they sell pre-made however I opted to make my own essentially triangle wedges out of 2x4 and painted them white to match my fascia. I highly recommend this so that you don't have that offset from the facial you were talking about. I will say that that offset is only an issue at the beginning of the run as with the canted angle the lower regions of the run start to move further underneath the shingle drops, if you follow me. In regards to hanger spacing, I live in san diego ca and I have found every 3 feet is fine. I use single downspout for a 60 foot. Screws are a must for the downspout connections only, in my opinion, but use stainless steel #8 pan head sheetmetal screws, and locate them away from flow and on the back where possible so you dont see them

      You are spot on about the expansion and this video is really misleading. You should not be gluing anything together or cutting a hole in the gutter for the downspout. Most people will be using the inner joining pieces too and he doesn't even cover that.

      @@freewaybaby haha, it was definitely a two person job but with a lot of trips up and down the ladder, dropping lots of things and a few colourful words, I got ‘er done! If you deal with snow, set the hangers up every 18” is what was recommended so this is what I did. Someone mentioned taking the Evestroughing down for the winter too. Which I did but left the hangers. And now the snow isn’t sliding off my steel roof without getting caught up on them. I asked the guy that mentioned taking them down and yup, he takes his hangers down. So next year, I’ll take them down too.
      We can’t post links on the Tube now but if you go to my page and scroll through my videos, you’ll find my tutorial. Good luck, you can do it, if this 5’4” 125lb girl can do it without experience, promise, you can too.

    Exactly the type of video I was looking for, even the same brand of eavestrough apparently, so thank you!! Only thing I would have liked to also see would have been a close up of how you fastened the clips to the fascia. Suscribed now too.

      Awesome! I'm so glad to hear it and thank you for subscribing! Sorry about not showing a close up of the mounting. I just used regular 3/4 in exterior screws to mount directly to the fascia.
      As for the jar hanging from the joist, That is a homemade carpenter bee trap. I had a bad problem with carpenter bees and they were starting to cause significant damage. Thankfully I no longer have any issue and the traps worked great!

    You allowed for no expansion and contraction during hot summers and cold winters (if you are where cold snow winters occur, say -30 degrees F. / C).
    Most installers do not screw every part together for this reason.

    I would only like to suggest using pop rivets instead of screws. Will make it easier when you need to clean out the gutters. Pop Rivets work better especially on the downspout where the screws like to catch leaves.

      I placed a brace about 1 1\2 - 2 feet apart.
      However, we don't get mech snow where we live so the load it has to support will be less. If you live in a climate that has a lot of snow and ice I would recommend a brace ever 1-1 1\2 feet.
      Hope this helps!

    It's my understanding that vinyl gutter "expends and contracts" due to temperature changes. The downspouts sections have temperature range "lines" on them to indicate were to set gutter when installing at the present temp. Gluing would obviously prevent this. Is this not true?

      They are screwed right to the fascia board. You shouldn’t need anything more than that unless the fascia board is loose. If that’s the case it would be best to enforce the fascia board with some screws before mounting the gutters.

    • @SimonSaysDIY
      @SimonSaysDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sure, I used 1/2in stainless steel screws to help hold the gutter together. Being stainless screws they won't rust and stain the gutters. For the hanger screws I used 1 1/2in exterior screws to mount it onto the facia. I haven't used vinyl gutters before and wanted to see how they would work. Vinyl can be easier than metal options so it makes the perfect DIY project to share with others. These were also pretty short sections of gutters so I figured it would work well for a test run. So far they have worked great and other than cleaning out the leaves once, I haven'y had to touch them. :)

      you could just mount the gutter hangers to the outside of the rafter tails. they should be 16in apart if so just one hanger every other rafter. If they are 2-3 foot apart then one hanger on every rafter. you could also take 1x4 of 1x6 pine boards and nail those to the rafters and use that as the facia to mount the gutters. I hope this helps.

    Why are gutters not on every side of the roof?

    • @SimonSaysDIY
      @SimonSaysDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You only need in on the down hill side of the roof. And even then it is really only needed on places where you walk under like entry ways. Gutters also help with drainage issues as it diverts all of the water from the roof to a safe area because water build up right next to the house can cause foundation damage and rot to wood over time.

    what caulking did you use for overlaping gutter pieces

    • @SimonSaysDIY

      I used a white silicone caulking. This caulking stays rubbery and flexible after drying and is less likely to crack and start leaking.

    You kept saying “glue” but I don’t know what product you mean. Is it just a water-based acrylic caulk or an actual adhesive product? Edit: from an earlier comment-reply I see that you used a white silicone caulk.

    • @SimonSaysDIY
      @SimonSaysDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    My hangers keep coming unclipped from the lip of the gutter. It looks like yours is working and staying on...have you seen anyone have these issues before?

    • @SimonSaysDIY
      @SimonSaysDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't seen this issue before. However i can think of a few reasons this could be happening. first is how far apart are the hangers? if they are too far apart it will put too much stress on the hangers and may cause it to come un clipped. every 2-3 feet should be plenty. Second thing that could cause this is the gutters are getting too heavy. Is the gutter full of leaves or slanted the wrong way so that the it doesn't drain properly? If water builds up in it that may also be putting too much weight on it and causes it to unclip from the hangers.
      hope this helps!

    I installed vinyl gutters and they were a big mistake. The worst is that they distort/warp/sag. When it rains, even a tiny low spot collects more water, weighing down, and collecting even more water, and eventually failing. The connectors leak, and overall it was a complete waste money. Taking them off now to replace them with metal. Do it once, do it right.

  • @aedgvv6095
    @aedgvv6095 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Vinyl Gutters are WAY better
    they last way longer now than metal ones and dont bend and dent like metal
    metal ones also are hard to seal and will leak . Vinyl will seal easly with the right compound or almost any. Metal ones suck . with metal ones they :
    NEver seal properly unless a million conditions are met,
    you have to bend them at joints, and the inner part gets reduced by 50 percent = CLOG

    • @SimonSaysDIY

      No, you can replace them separately as needed. If the roofing is in good shape there is no need to change that out. The gutters are only attached to the wood facia board at the edge of the roof and won't affect the roof if you remove the gutter and replace it.
      Hope that helps.

    Not sure what part of the USA you live in but these gutters expand and contract too much in hotter climates. They warp from the heat and the sealer pulls away at the joints. My are always leaking at the seams. In the valley you will need a splash guard to keep the water from jumping over the gutter.

    At 4:56 you connect the two pieces using the L piece. I noticed you connected each to the L without using the "joiner" pieces sold for this line of gutter ( the joiners have a gasket similar to the end caps ). Any particular reason why you didn't use joiners at this step?
    Great video btw, enjoyed watching it!

    • @riverlegendsflyfishinggame9767

      One other critique. You mentioned the downhill drop should be about 1" per 10 ft I believe (5:45). However, this is very different from other typical recommended drops, including from the amerimax gutter manufacture instructions - they recommend 1/8" drop per 10 ft.

    • @SimonSaysDIY
      @SimonSaysDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! I chose to not use them because like I mentioned the gaskets didn't work well and the gutter fit inside the corner fitting pretty well without it. If the jointers are used I would recommend still using glue to seal and not only rely on the Gaskets.

    • @SimonSaysDIY
      @SimonSaysDIY  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, It really depends on how long of a stretch of gutters you are running. The facia board is typically 6-8 in tall and you can only drop a few inches before you run out of room to mount on the facia. This was such a short run that it allowed a steeper pitch. A steeper pitch will only allow the water to empty faster.
      Thanks for the questions and feedback!
