      Would it be better in the long run to continue the downspout to the ground instead of on the lower roof? Won't the water shooting out of there raise the shingles or wear them out faster?

    I'm a 58yr old female. I live alone in the North Minnesota woods on acreage. I have a huge 2 story, 4bdrm farmhouse and I need new gutters. 5k for the beautiful black seamless ones I WANT. But in the meantime I just need to replace a few failing sections. Thank you so much for such a clear, concisely put together vid. I actually believe I'll be able to manage. 🙋🏼‍♀️💞

    I liked how this guy put the gutter up in sections rather than a long unit (mine will be 24’). This will allow me to do it along w/little assistance. Very good video!

    I like your duck and spider! To get the slope, you can put a tack every 10' down the facia, 1/4" lower each one, and snap a chalk line between them and follow that.

    The most important issue you guys need to know. Do not use Water based seals. Use a VOC/ polyurethane sealer. I replaced the gutters when I was 14 years old in 1995 and they still do not leak. Contractors who have installed them as a little as a few weeks ago have developed leaks.

    1/2 for every 10ft just snap a chalk line before you hang the gutter and it’s a lot easier to keep a consistent slope

      Been hanging gutters for 15 years and I can tell you plastic is a no go. And using a chalk line is very silly. As long as you’re getting minimal slope every few hangers you should be just fine

    Instead of the junction pieces using tin snips to cut the outside edge top lip, then slide one gutter over the other. It works well. Of course using the silicone.

    Thank you so much for the video. I found this very helpful. I appreciate that the video is "Home Depot specific". That's where I am most likely going to buy my supplies. I would have probably purchased vinyl but have changed my mind because of your video. I also appreciate that you mentioned the rivet option at the end. I own a rivet gun and wasn't even thinking about rivet simply mentioned it. DUH! It's arrogant of me to make a suggestion being as I haven't done this yet but I think you could accommodate the small section pasture downspout by simply adding a small section of gutter and pitching the end up in the opposite slope. That would give you something to catch that small section of rain and pitch it to your downspout. I would think that would be easier than trying to punch a hole and add your own downspout.

    The drip edge should overlap the back lip of gutter. To do this you have to clip the hangers onto the gutter in their proper locations prior to lifting the gutter and sliding it UNDER the drip edge. To get the proper slope you may have to notch the drip edge above the hangers on the high side.

    • @Varifyable
      @Varifyable ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Instead of notching the drip edge just install the hanger over the drip edge then fasten through both the drip edge and gutter.

      That’s what I was thinking. They do have to go under the drip edge. And piecing these together in place will not work. If you have to have them slid under the drip edge. Either way this is a very helpful video. There is more than one way to skin a cat. it just depends on how waterproof you want your cat skin to be.

  • @cymek11
    @cymek11 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

    The top downspout that is above the lower roof should be diverted directly to the gutter below. In time water will wear out the shingles. Talking from experience here.

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess I can just add a 90 to it and direct it down the roof but I have seen others done that way and the water flows right over the gutter when it rains hard

      90 down the roof, and another 90 into the gutter. The only problem you may experience is leaves, but better clean out the leaves once a year than replace the roof and/or ceiling.

    Nice job for a first timer. Like others mentioned, the ladder slope is dangerous. Rivets will last longer than the screws. 1/2" slope for every 10' of gutter. Start just a little lower than the dripline to keep the water from coming back under the roof. Use a chalk line to mark where the gutters will go. I agree with using the downspout insert vs. the adapter to make it look cleaner. I'm sure you saw and heard all the "pros" on here so I'll shut up - lol!

    • @biggstile
      @biggstile 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      By dripline, do you mean shingles or drip cap?

    • @TheFuelInjected
      @TheFuelInjected 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you're doing 1/2" Slope for every 10 ft you get a maximum of 40 ft at best of trough before you're hanging the trough below the fascia line. It also doesn't account for the actual roof surface area that eave is shedding. Rivets are also a terrible idea, unless you want the professional installer who has to replace your work to charge double for the removal and probable replacement of fascia as well.

      I am getting ready to install gutters on my house. Could you elaborate on your statement? It seems that the majority of the cost is in the fittings and corners. The 10 ft pieces are relatively cheap. Thanks in advance.

    • @vincentdow5899
      @vincentdow5899 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jonathangoin I think he means: don't use a coupling connector. You can just lap the upstream gutter channel OVER the downstream one. I lap them by 4" - and then pop in a stainless steel self-tapping screw (small) through the widest, highest facing edge of the front. At the point i grab the backs of the gutter together with a vice-grip, flip it over and pass a screw through the back. Silicon, or polyurethane caulk under the lapped joint.
      This way looks much better than couplings... and couplings create a potential leak. 4" lap with silicon will never leak.

    Your high side should not be all the way to the roof. If snow or ice comes off that roof it’s gonna take that getter with it. Take a straight edge. Level or whatever and slide it down the roof until it meets the front edge of the gutter the drop the gutter down the facia board until the straight edge clears the front edge of the gutter, this will allow the snow or ice to slide past the gutter in the winter.

      You want it as high as possible. If you have it as low as you say water will just fly over the gutter. If you screw the gutter with hangers 2 feet apart. Long screws and zips in it. Also seamless gutter. It’ll be fine unless there is an excessive amount of snow or ice. Which would have damage the gutter either way you do it.

    Regarding the 2nd-floor gutter emptying on the roof, the water could spread everywhere on the 1st-floor roof (including backwards to where the 1st-floor roof joins the 2n-floor house siding). That might result in leaks there and under the shingles (water going sideways), as it did around my front door, which rotted and had to be replaced. SUGGESTED SOLUTION . . . When I had my roof replaced, a gutter guy added an elbow (where you left it open above the 1st-floor roof) and directed a downspout section to the bottom gutter run. He then added another elbow that "bottomed" into the gutter and cut a "door/opening" in that elbow on the downspout side so water runs in that direction instead of possibly backwards towards the house. In your case, you might just re-orient the 2nd-floor downspout directly into the bottom gutter run (instead of curving over the roof like you did) and add the elbow with the "door/opening." But the volume of water flowing into the bottom gutter run at that point might be a problem. It's not for mine.

    Just out of curiosity why wouldn't you just have that upper level going the other way? Then it would drain straight to the ground on the opposite corner, instead of overloading that one downspout? Is there some kind of code or something that keeps you from going straight to the ground from the 2nd story? Thanks for sharing though, I was curious how those seamer connections worked...

    • @SSLFamilyDad
      @SSLFamilyDad  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could have done that also but this way I use less downspout. The main reason was that I need to get the water away from the house and I have a drain tile right in the middle on that side and due to the slope of the ground I needed all the water to get to the back corner of the house on the other side.

    When dumping on the roof, try to get down to the roof (instead of a foot above the roof) if you are too high the water will knock the grit off the shingles and drill through the shingles. Put the gutter clips in on the ground (ideally look for rafter location by looking for nailing on the trim board and match the rafter locations and spacing). Having the clips installed on the ground will make it even easier to install by yourself.

    How do you think I should go about dealing with the gutter incline on a 50 foot flat portion of roof?

  • @kendalgee5808
    @kendalgee5808 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You should have checked to make sure it was level before you finalized joining the 2 rain gutters together. If one of the gutters has an upslope your screwed. Because when you go to measure the slight downslope when installing them, it will be off.

    We had installer replace gutters after some storm damage. 4 consecutive hidden gutter mounts were over tightened and the bolts broke right at the facia. Do you have any idea how to get the broken parts out? I tried vice grips, but there isn't enough to grab onto. I really don't want to make more holes in the facia by going beside. BTW, if you're going to lay out your extention ladder that flat, I hope you at least put a couple of stakes in to hold the bottom.

    Theres an easier way with half the seams. Just snip the ends of the front top edges at a 20° angle and slide one piece into the other.

    Great job and great info....i have a concern about how the upper floor gutter is running out on the roof. i think there may be an issue with the water, especially on a hard rain, running up under the shingles which may cause a lot of other issues. overall though thanks for taking the time to share. God Bless.

    Good to see that a single person can do it by himself. One question - how difficult will be it if it was on the 2 story house that you need the gutter to be installed. Also, would you assemble all 20' at ground level and then take it ups the roof by yourself or would you install 10' sections and seam it up at the roof level?

    • @YoooItsRex
      @YoooItsRex 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the same question. About to do my gutters on a 2 story house, have you found an answer to this yet? I would imagine slapping a chalk line across the fascia to use as a reference would be the way to go if installing 10 or 15 foot sections at a time.

    Don't take this the wrong way, but you really need to set up your extension ladder MUCH more vertical. Having it set up that way is extremely dangerous as there isn't much support to keep it from sliding out underneath you. I don't want to see a video of you in the hospital...or worse! Keep up the good work and God Bless!

    • @Jeff82556
      @Jeff82556 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree with Josh .... extremely risky for anyone. I use an 8ft step ladder for 1-story areas, extension ladder for 2-story gutters.

      Hopefully, he at least put some stakes into the ground to keep the end of the ladder from sliding back. That won't keep the ladder from buckling under heavier loading though. That angle will greatly reduce how much weight the ladder can support. Anyway, it looks like he didn't have a disaster THIS TIME.
