Think about where Plini started when he first picked up a guitar versus Dean. Plini leaned into prog with jazz influences, while Dean went all-in on death metal and speed. Watching Dean wrestle with this piece shows he's stepping into new territory (and honestly, I’d love to see Plini tackle an Archspire track for comparison!). This was incredible to watch, a powerful reminder to push beyond your comfort zone in your playing now and then. It was inspiring for me!
i dont think plini would be able to do it. not because of lack of technical skill. but rather muscle strength and stamina. i used to play alot of black metal and wrote black metal so its was alot of tremolo picking and now i have moved to playing more progressive music and sometime country music. i cant really keep up with playing a whole song i wrote back in high school because i didn't keep my muscle stamina up of the years. i could strengthen my arm back up in a week or so for it. but its just not something i do. i think plini would have a hard time just holding the same speed the whole time for a whole song. now just learning one riff plini would have it solved pretty quick. his shapes and patterns are more complex and archspire uses alot of triangles and rectangles on the fret board. so does everyone else. which is standard shapes for the human mind. so plini would not have to hard of a time since he practices and writes in a more complex group of patterns and shapes.
Forcing himself to learn all of these different styles has to pay off for future Archspire song writing, I would imagine. Also I don't know of anyone that willingly posts themselves suffering through learning a song like this. Dean is a humble awesome dude.
I never knew how much I needed to hear Dean play Polaris before today. As much as we Polaris fans all love Rick and Ryan's work, I feel it'll be something special to have Dean watch it played and put his own spin on it. Other guitarists analyzing and marvelling at Ryan's playing is probably one of the most fitting tributes I can think of to Ryan's memory.
Always a lot to digest with Plini. Especially when your ears initially tell you "that doesnt sound too complicated". I want to see him live one day soooo bad. Especially if chris is drumming with him.
honestly one of the best shows i've ever been to. saw him at like a 200 person venue in Atlanta one year and it was genuinely a top 5 experience. chris on drums, simon on bass and they had this guy on keyboards that was fucking insane i can't remember his name, though.
This is awesome. I just finished learning the riff from gunrave and to see a professional guitarist have the same “wtf is happening right now” reaction struggling through learning a new song is reassuring that I’m not crazy.
Maaaaan, I was REALLY hoping to watch you struggle with some Psycroptic riffage! Lmao. It's absolutely absurd how effortless Joe's style looks. Anyway, this was such a fun watch, dude. Plini is a beast. I think it's really important and awesome to have someone like you show that guitar is effing hard, no matter how good you get! I love the honesty of your mistakes and the total lack of ego. As a fellow shred-head, it makes me really happy that guitar has an honest ambassador like you to equalize all the perfect, cherry-picked takes posted across social media. =)
love plini, this is definitely the style that i've been working for years now after like 8 years of prog death metal and black metal. Polyphia, Plini, AAL, Chon, and Intervals always made me so jealous haha. can't wait to see you finally land on polyphia. lol
@@TwoandaHater don't really get the hang of polyphia either, but plini is plini, polyphia is polyphia. apples and oranges. both are great in their own genre, the rest is subjective
Just wanted to say that I appreciate these videos and that you do them. As one of the most (arguably) proficient guitarist in the world, it’s nice to see the human side and see you struggle with something different.
i saw plini live once, opening for polyphia and its absolutely insane to me how he plays stuff like this so flawlessly live. (And it was also funny watching the crowd trying to headbang and clap to his weird ass rhythms lmao)
I really love this candid style, showing your mistakes. I've been really sick of guitar youtubers who just show their shreds as random tidbits and only good takes throughout the video, it sets really unrealistic expectations for guitarists who are still learning. This is awesome man, thank you
Definitely one my favourite Plini tunes! It's actually great watching accomplished players like yourself learning something new and challenging to see how you process the information.
Was at that Periphery show with you all in Worcester. Drove down from Canada. That was my intro to you guys(Archspire). Mind blowing show you guys put on!
What I love about Plini is that it's like heavy jazz. It's super chill but also endlessly complicated and weird. It's exactly what you said about his influences. You can totally hear the Meshuggah in that last part of the chorus riff.
man i fucking love plini lol. was lucky to see him live a few years ago and he blew away every expectation i had of the performance. terrific musician. incredible songwriter. great video as usual!!! i'd love it if you did more plini videos tbh
That part of the riff that sort of goes a bit outside sounds soooo much like the contortionist. The thing dean said about how there’s clues to heavy music in the track is on point
Dean, I love watching you tackle songs that are new to you. Makes me feel good about the struggles I go through playing stuff, even if it is wayyyy easier in comparison.
I remember when I heard Plini for the first time, I couldn't believe how good he was at guitar, just straight blew my mind with his technique and phrasing
For like a year (maybe even longer) after this song first dropped, it became the song I ended up playing literally every time I picked a guitar up. That confusion of trying to figure out the time feel is so real, even after playing it for so long I would sometimes lose it and have to refresh myself. Plini is a very chill dude but he comes up with some wild stuff. "Handmade Cities" is my fav album of his (check out the closing track "Cascade" especially, it's another interesting one on the heavier side. Also "Impulse Voices" was my AotY for 2020, mostly for the double-whammy of "Pan" & "Ona / 1154" which have some killer guest contributions and might be my fav songs of his.
"If you are still watching, holy shit, why?" Because Plini is one of my favorite guitarists and it is amazing watching you learn his work. If you like his style, check out Owane and Sithu Aye for more prog/djent/tech/rock
I've been inspired by this series to start pushing outside my own comfort zones. I've only been learning guitar for almost 3 years, with Tool being my primary inspiration so I've stuck fairly heavily to much more rhythm focused songs. But I've always loved shreddy/complex guitar leads, so I've made it my mission to nail the solo in Symphony of Destruction. With your advice, I've taken it off the page and running at 50% consistently. It's going to take me a lot of practice nailing the legato and clarity in fretting every note, but I know it'll happen eventually.
I will just say this: often, these tabs are not accurate. Sometimes, there are easier ways to play these parts, to the point that actual artists play them differently. Still amazing to see Dean doing this :D
Plini is, something else, to even have the creativity to compose all that using all those techniques. Good God he is very versatile and forward thinking somehow.
you've done great Dean! I was excited for the end of the song where the main riff repeats itself and they mess with the rhythms, because that is what got me confused even just by listening to this song. Maybe you could come back to this piece or do something else where the main challenge are wonky rhythms instead of licks and runs. Would be great to see how you tackle those things ;) anyway, well done dude!
whats nuts is that a few years ago when i first started listening to Plini, a lot of people were saying how he isnt 'the most technical of guitarists', preferring to commend his songwriting abilities and composition. well he had chops then and now he's even better!
The thing with Plini and Intervals both is that they can't really make music that is strictly technical because it would sound horrible. The music needs to stand on it's own as instrumental guitar music, so it's often just tasteful and melodic rather than being as technical as they can possibly be
Love watching these because they're reliable to learning riffs because we see how you do it xD Will you be running through all the songs on this wheel before starting season 2 of this series? ;)
please add the band Conjurer to the wheel of riffs! they have some really intricate riffs that seem kinda simple but are much trickier than they sound, especially in the songs Basilisk, Suffer Alone, In Your Wake and Cracks in the Pyre. IIRC, they don't have tabs in Sheet Happens but you can get them in their bandcamp and website in a Pay What You Want system, really worth checking out
This song is mean, it's not kind 😂 You are right Dean🫡 9½/10 Plini's music are a masterpiece (personally) of prog music. The way he structured his songs with a blend of everything, like no other unique twist here and there, his phrasing, no overdoing... There's a real life goin on in his story telling songs.
