    Even Tywin later admits this was one of Joffrey's and Cercei's biggest blunders. Dismissing Selmy from his guard, the years of experience and skills lost there, only an idiot would take such an option. Gotta love how Cersei managed to blunder her way through the Kingdom; failing to raise Joffrey properly, failing to understand how to rule, failing to understand anything around her.

    Love how he is subtly telling Joffrey that he now is his enemy. The Iron Throne was made of the swords of Aegon´s enemies. By telling him "Melt it down and add it to the others", he is telling him that they now are enemies. Great scene.

    • @marc8828
      @marc8828 5 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      It was more sarcastically though. Aegon didn't melt his enemies swords down into a Throne to remember who is enemies were. He did it to show that he conquered them. Thing is, he did so effortlessly due to his dragons. In this case, Joffrey is able to effortlessly remove Ser Barristan from the Kingsguard because he has the power to and Ser Barristan can do anything about it (like the 7 kingdoms couldn't do virtually anything about Aegon's Dragons; with respect to Dorne though).

      You’ve all taken this out of proportion, when a kingsguard dies or is dismissed, his sword is taken and melted down, and put with the swords of other kingsguard, it isn’t added to the iron throne😂 he’s not threatening Joffrey by saying that, he’s just stating what is customary. It’s not a subtle suggestion. You couldn’t physically add more swords to the iron throne after it had been forged anyway😂 that’s not how forging steel works.

      @Zaus this was actually one of the most hypocritical things Barristan ever said, and full of bitterness that he was being passed over. Ifs the first time I decided I couldnt stand the pompous prick. He sure as hell didn't kick up a fuss about the fact he was serving WITH Kingslayer all those years after the rebellion and in any case he's as much of a fucking traitor anyway for serving the regime that destroyed the Targs. The books suggest there's an element of jealousy, he's less naturally skilled than the prodigy Jaime and hated the fact he was inducted to the KG at 15 whilst it took Selmy years of hard work before being inducted in his 20s. All he saw was arrogance and he disliked Jaime for it.

    • @Captain-Jinn
      @Captain-Jinn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +98

      How is it common sense for Barristan Selmy to betray his liege lord? The king is dead, long live the king. Jauffre, while being a pompous shit, can tear away any decree or law set by a previous king, as is his right. Ser Barriston clearly respected Eddard but put his career and duty before his personal passions, as he would again and again. Cersei/Jauffre made one of the largest mistakes of their lives when they demoted him, as he probably would have continued serving till the bitter end, as he did with Aerys Targeryen; better known as "the Mad King". I can't imagine all the things Selmy let slip during Aerys' reign, and that definitely must have haunted him. But he stayed loyal till he was pardoned by Robert, and stayed loyal till he was dismissed. It's well out of his character to ignore orders, as his best talents are his advice due to experience/age and his sword arm; not his intuition.

    I wouldn't doubt that Sir Barristan is based off the historical knight, Sir William Marshall: He, like The Bold also served several several kings throughout his life and fought through several wars, killed many men, and died at the age of 72. He was extremely fit for his advanced age and often described in Grandfatherly terms.
    Sir Barristan himself though, according to Martin could stalemate Sir Arthur Dayne, Sword of the Morning, if he wasn't wielding his trademark blade - Dawn.
    Even Jaime himself admits at his prime, Barristan is one of the few knights that could beat him in a straight up duel.

      The hound is a badass for certain and in the top 5 but Arthur Dayne was something else. He was maybe the best swordsman in the novels who is confirmed to have actually existed, excluding legendary figures like Simeon Star-Eyes and so on. With Dawn in his hands there were very few people who could even hope to withstand him for even a short time. Every Sword of the Morning was one of the best fighters of their time and Arthur Dayne is the greatest SotM there was.
      That being said, the show does not do a great job of portraying this. Ned’s fever dream-memory of the Tower of Joy might be the single best piece of writing that GRRM has ever put to paper; the gravitas was like a physical force and his prose was insanely on point.
      Anyway this is turning into a novel but Arthur Dayne was the best straight up swordsman in their history. The Hound is something else entirely, he’s fucking dangerous as hell because he doesn’t give a fuck about who thinks he’s the best, or honor, or whatever. He is there to make you fucking die and he’s got an uncanny ability to find the right way and right moment to do so. He’s not a swordsman, he’s a KILLER, and in many important ways that’s a way more dangerous thing to be.

      Naomi Washinton It was hinted at in Season 1 and confirmed later on that Lancel Lannister was instructed by Cersei to give Robert wine with more alcohol than usual. This in turn would get him more drunk than he normally would causing him to die or get mortally wounded on the hunt.
      Barristan Selmy was one of the witnesses. So she had him expelled in case he became a problem.

    • @AnimalBlundetto-12

      His age and sympathy for Ned had nothing to do with it. Cersei wanted Jaime as the new Lord Commander and also wanted to give the empty kingsguard spot to the Hound, ensuring that the order is entirely under Lannister control. This plan was obviously idiotic since Ser Barristan was the best swordsman in Westeros at the time and commanded a great deal of respect. Whichever claimant he chose to serve would have a great deal of legitimacy added to their cause. Naturally Cersei was shortsighted and couldn't see any of this.

    If Barristan Selmy could take on the king's guards old as he is, isn't it plausible that Syrio Forel, in the prime of his life could take on a guard like Meryn Trant even with just a wooden sword?

    • @Apis4
      @Apis4 10 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      It's VERY possible.
      Syrio Forel was, and I suspect you're right, so *IS* .. the FIRST SWORD of Bravoss.
      After nightfall, in Bravoss, it is legal for anyone to demand a duel with anyone else who's carrying a sword. In a society famed almost as much for their Sword Masters as for their Paramours and Bank.
      Bravossi 'Dancing' masters are sought throughout the world for their skills, to train Sowrdsmen, as Champions, and even on occasion body guards. Even Faceless (Wo)/Men respect them.
      Whilst Selmy might be the best Knight, and sword, in Westeros, now Dayne's dead, and men like Jaime and Loras as seen as masters of Sword, even with men like Randall Tarly and Victarion Greyjoy, even Stannis Baratheon, painted as implacable Warriors to challenge any in the Kingdoms when it come to an actual battle... even the Clegane boys being monsters of steel, personally... I suspect few men in the entire of Westeros, or anywhere else, would be as masterful, in the sense of the virtuoso, maestro, art in motion, with a Sword... even a wooden one... as a Bravossi 'Dancing' master... and of all Bravossi Dancers, and masters of the Dance, out there... Syrio was the BEST.
      The First Sword of Bravoss.
      We never see him die, nor have it completely confirmed.
      We do see him knock four Lanister swords unconscious.
      On the other hand, The Hound said Trant was nothing, implied he couldn't beat his shadow if it was drunk, Selmy looked right at Trant with arrogance in his eyes and to me, looked to be saying 'you first, easy' when he said he could still cut all five of them down, and Bronn, another hardened, seasoned fighter, said told Trant he was essentially a puffed up egotist with nothing to back up his shiny suit, to his face.
      Given that three established experts martial, all made it clear that to them, Trant was as useless as a steer on a stud farm, and is doing well enough just to not gut himself with his own sword, and given on the other hand, Forel is the first amongst the swords masters of a city-state known for it's expert swordsmen, I think it's certainly not only not outside the realms of possibility, but quite good odds, that even with a wooden sword, a broken one at that.. Syrio Forel came out on top in his encounter with Sir Meryn Trant.

    Notice that Janos Slynt never even got his sword from the scabbard. Every other knight was out and ready as soon as Barristen drew, but Janos just fumbled around with his.
    Classic Janos. I hear the King himself made Janos a lord, and that he has powerful friends at court. He is also known as a man who really knows his wine. I seem to recall he had a slight run-in with the Lord Commander at the wall.

    The conversations in the first season were so natural you almost think the directors just told those actors be creative

    When the kingsguard sheath their swords as selmy is walking out, the furthest one on the right during the shot couldnt sheath his sword correctly and is stuck all shot holding it up lol

    I think Barristan hates Jaime because he did what Barristan wishes he could've brought himself to do before the rebellion. Forsake his honor to get Rhaegar on the throne.

    Only if they added that scene right after he gets dismissed. Knights try to capture him, he kills them with his bare hands. Then goes to him room writes in his journal about being dismissed then walks out wearing a cloke. Fuck with him you know he has it.
