    In my opinion, the biggest mistake the show producers make is kill off Ser Barristan. He's like literally the most shitwrecking badass in the world in the book, even though advanced in age. And I love how he is portrayed. The face, the voice, the attitude, everything is perfect. As Kevin says, he really is Obi Wan Kenobi-ish.

      The actor for barristan actually had read the books and thought it was wrong for his character to be killed off so early so he wrote a letter to D&D about it and there’s an interview of them talking about the letter and laughing about how it made them want to kill him off even more.

If I was him, I would take Cerseis offer and live my life like I never did before, would marry a good wife and make my house and name great by buying land, and recruiting soldiers and banner man. House Barristan would be the new warden of the storms end and someday King of westeros in future. But nah, Selmy rather liked kissing asses of some noble fools instead of making his house great.

      It's called taking pride & honor in the vow he took, to become the Kingsguard.
      Two things which were considered of utmost importance in the time period to which Thrones is based upon.

    I always thought Ser Barristan was a bit of a coward for not siding with Eddard Stark when Cercei clearly usurped the throne by ignoring Robert's final decree. If Barristan had sided with Stark that day then we could've potentially had a different outcome to the whole story, provided the other Kingsguard followed him.

    • @LeiRaion
      @LeiRaion 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are both being a bit ignorant here... when Barristan didn't side with Ned it wasn't because he was a coward... he did it because his only fault was being too loyal. He refused to break his vow under any circumstances. He was bound to the king and he took his vows VERY seriously.

    • @petesthename1588
      @petesthename1588 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He had already vowed to Joffrey so he had to uphold his vow
      The situation would have changed if littlefinger didn’t set Ned up or Janos dodnt betray Ned. Bariston likely wouldn’t have been killed by neds orders and if all went to plan Ned would become king, likely handing the throne to stannis after Joffrey was killed

    • @OhmeinGottVIIC
      @OhmeinGottVIIC 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@petesthename1588 Since the vow to Joffrey was illegal he indeed broke the vow he gave to Robert. If the former king declared wishes regarding his successor, it doesn't matter what the heir says to that. Barristan had to follow Robert's last order in that matter, but he was afraid to do it.

    This is still my greatest beef with the show. All the other small changes I shrugged off for sake of time, but this one just still boils me, ser barristan is in charge of meeren and preparing to fight in the books as we speak. I mean it’s taken forever to get another book but we have gotten more chapters from him so he’s still alive. They did him so wrong!

      They didn't know how to write his character arc so they axed him, same with Baelish & Varys. They axed tons of characters they didn't know how to write right after the source material ended... Jon, Dany, Tyrion, Cersei, Jaime, all the Stark pups, etc.

    I have a feeling Ser Barristan was meant to be the "final boss" of the series. Being a man of honor who refused to ever break his oath under any circumstances, he still would've defended Daenerys to the end even after she went mad and genocidal, meaning that whoever the stories final hero is (presumably Jon Snow) would have to first go through him to stop her.

    @ 16:55 when he tells her about her father, the truth even now as she's becoming less predictable and more stubborn (the perhaps TOO subtle descent to madness), is not only one of the best short dialogues in terms of timing and tide shifting, but this is why his death was a far more massive loss (than her buddy who talks about massages and translates (eg she'd be replaced with an iphone, which finally begins her cray) than the show made it, or the viewer made of it.
    He never gave bad advice and was arguably the greatest fighter on the planet. He'd have sliced Jorah and Dario at the same time, this dude is Sir Arthur Dayne for 6 decades, and he warned her. He knew HER family, AND her enemy's family and their respective histories (Tywin to the Starks) and respect. If Barriston lived and creepy Jorah would get a little bootie, perhaps the entire "Game" would change.

    She'd have took kings landing episode 1 of season 7 if Barristan was still alive. She went from having the greatest ever knight and military genius, as well as Jorah an ex knight, a war veteran who had a great mind for strategy and politics in Westeros. To having brean dead (post season 4) Tyrion and treacherous Varys. They cost her everything. As well as Jon Snow.
