Scrome J8: A Proper Scope for the FR-F2 Sniper

    The French Army used a single pattern of rifle scope from 1949 all the way until 1995 - the APX L806, which was essentially a German ZF-4. It was finally replaced officially in 1995, with the adoption of the Scrome J8 F1 for use on their FR-F2 sniper rifles.
    The French Army wanted a scope made domestically, and the only suitable manufacturer to make it was Scrome. Formed in 1987, this was a company that specialized in electro-mechanical systems more complex than simple rifle scopes. They built things like mortar and artillery sights, and today do a lot of work with lasers, cameras, and aerospace systems. So when the government presented them the specifications for a simple, robust, 8x40mm fixed-power telescope they had no trouble making it.
    The J8 was designed with a reticle that had range finding capability and etched BDC holdovers out to 800m, the maximum effective range of the FR-F2. This allowed the user to focus on targets as much as possible, and not think about external adjustments while shooting.
    From the collector perspective, the J8 has been extremely difficult to find. This was a small side project for Scrome, and they essentially only built the scopes to order, not keeping them in stock for commercial sale. In addition, legal quirks theoretically made civilian sale of scopes with military range finding reticles illegal in France until 2012. A few commercial models were made with mil-dot reticles, but even these have always been very rare.
    Happily, Scrome is now making a run of military-pattern J8 scopes to take advantage of the batch of surplussed FR-F2 rifles.

    The reticle of the J8 was specifically designed for the ballistic characteristics of the 7.62 PF2 ammunition. Using different ammunition will modify the aiming points in the scope. The curved lines going from the 100 to 500m aiming points are a rangefinding device based on the shoulders of a human being. The width of the 100m to 500m aiming points is also a rangefinding device based on the width of a human head. The rangefinding device at the bottom of the reticle works on the height of a human being and also the width of the shoulders (the width of each horizontal line).

      Actually he says the curved lines "serve no ballistic purpose (paraphrase)" other than to draw one's eye to the center. He says the top horizontal lines, however, between the downward curving lines, are additional rangefinding aids (shoulder width) to complement the height-measuring horizontal lines at the bottom of scope.
      And what is the PF ammo you mention? Who makes it, what weight and is it obtainable? Thx.
      I have no background in telescopic sights and just got J8 delivered...rifle to come. Having no background, this ought to be challenging!

    • @XFly170
      @XFly170 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@teller1290 Just because he says it doesn’t mean that it’s so. The FRF-2 with the J8 day scope and OB-50 night scope was my service rifle for years whilst serving with a certain unit of the French Army. The curved lines are a rangefinding device based on the width of shoulders. The horizontal lines between these curved lines are another rangefinding device, based on the width of a human head. The 7.62mm PF2 (Perforante, modèle F2) was a special « precision class » ammunition with an armour-piercing (black tipped nose) bullet, using a dense steel core tip and a copper sheath. It was made by MEN, for use by the French Army in conjuction with the FRF-2 and J8. No idea on the weight: it was definitely lower than regular « ball » ammunition. I don’t believe that it’s made anymore and even if it is, I doubt that it’s available on the open market.

    One thing that would be really cool to see for these longer range shoots is if you guys set up a camera close to the target. Probably behind a steel plate or something just in case a bullet doesn't go as planned.

    Awesome Video , I personally fancy myself a sniper nerd so seeing some of these systems from the "interesting" era of modern firearm design (1960-2000~) is always a treat , more soo when coupled with the whacky antics that is optic design.
    The spin drift on the lower chevrons really reminds me of the Russian 1p59 family of optic , which its self reminds me of the US A.R.T system.
    What time frame was that rifle scope developed again? You might have said it in the vid and I missed it.
