    In a recent video, I discussed whether or not the Canon EOS R is a good purchase for an entry level full frame mirrorless camera in 2021, and in this video, I clarify why I don't recommend it for sports photography. This is a lesson learned the hard way, as I shot the 5th Annual Pomona 5k and 10k event recently as a volunteer photographer. I don't recommend the Canon EOS R without the RF 70-200mm lens and the battery grip. It does a decent job with that setup, but I still feel like that it doesn't have enough speed for fast moving sports. That's my two cents! Leave me a comment and let me know your thoughts!

    Hey! Thanks for the video. Was hoping to hear the EOS R would be better at sports compared to the T7. I'm new to sports photography, so forgive the ignorance. On a budget as well....
    Looking for a recommendation on better option to shoot fast outdoor sports (lacrosse/soccer) most likely with a 75-300mm lens most of the time. Any (even older) model or lower priced DSLRs that better fit that bill? Thank you.

      Hey there! I really appreciate your comment and question. No worries about being new to sports photography-we all start somewhere! Considering your need for a camera suitable for fast outdoor sports like lacrosse and soccer, and given your budget concerns, I would suggest checking out the Canon 7D Mark II. It's a bit older but still a fantastic option for sports photography due to its robust autofocus system and high burst rate, which are great for capturing fast action. Pairing it with your 75-300mm lens will work well for outdoor sports. It’s a bit pricier than the T7, but the performance leap in sports settings is significant. Keep an eye out for used or refurbished models to get the best value! Hope this helps, and happy shooting! 📸✨

    I’m a year late to this, but I find a 50mm prime on a second body (and not a 24-70) is great for running events and indoor sports. Of course it has the added bonus of keeping the weight down on your second body. My main lens is usually a 70-200 2.8 as you’ve used here. For indoor sports a 135 mm prime nicely compliments the 50. F/2.8 seems slow for indoor in my experience.

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a great choice for a second lens!

    Im 18 and recently got into sports photography. Used a rebel T7i with (mainly) the 75-300 kit lens, got some decent shots. Now looking to upgrade, do you have any recommendations for a camera body? Have photographed football baseball basketball soccer tennis lacrosse and gymnastics. Thank you!

    EOS R for landscape and macro, 90D for wildlife. Have you ever noticed poor manual focus with the R focus peaking, I do.

    I'm looking to get this camera actually and your review videos on it have been the most helpful. Considering the limitations for this camera at shooting sports, your photos still looked great to me lol. But probably because of the experience shooting more than the camera body. Nonetheless, I loved the video! Thank you!
    Also, I'm with you about the camera straps. I go strapless or if I'm moving and shooting I'll use the hand/wrist strap.

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear you on camera straps. I was just reflecting that I got good results partly from experience and partly because shooting races like this is an easier task than other sports that have more quick turns and unpredictable action.

    I definately wouldn't recommend the R for anything fast paced too, but why are you not happy with the RF 24-70? I have never heard anyone not recommending this lens. The RF 24-70 is almost glued to my R6 and its autofocus is super quick and definately not slower than my RF 70-200.

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad it's working well for you. I'm wondering if the two R's I was shooting with had different settings, so it appeared that the 24-70 performed less well than expected. Not sure but I've never loved any of the images I've shot with the 24-70. It may be just personal preference.

    I purchased the EOS R as a upgrade to my 7d to shoot at my grandsons football/little league games. So far I’m not impressed because the photos are not on par with the 7d. I’ve only had the EOS R for four months so maybe if I play with the settings, I might get better photos. I’m an amateur photographer and I’ve been shooting with 7d and a 5d Mark ll and usually been satisfied with my photos. Thanks for a great video.

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I'm sorry to hear about the R's performance. What's your typical settings for sports photography? And what is the main shortcoming with the R (missed focus, blurry images, bad color, etc.) that makes it not as impressive as you hoped.

    Excellent video. I’m currently using the r5 as my main body for sports. But I realize I need a 2nd body. I was thinking of getting the r as a 2nd body but 80% of sport shooting will be with the r5. What is your opinion? Since you have the r5, would you use the r as a second camera?

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for watching and for leaving a comment! The R is a great choice. If you have the R5, you could even go with the RP for a second.

    Just what you've said. Great camera but for fast moving sports i use other bodies.

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you. I think I got good results partly from experience and partly because of the nature of the sport. These type of races are far easier to shoot than sports like soccer, football or hockey that have more unpredictable turns and critical moments to capture.

    I take high school sports pictures for kids and families. Nothing professional. I have the Canon 6D and need to upgrade. What do you recommend? I plan on using the 70-200mm lens.

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 6D is a great camera! I was fortunate enough to have that one. It was my first full frame camera. Are you saying you have an EF70-200 and are planning to adapt it to an RF mount body?

    Since both Canon EOS R and RP are not good for sport photography, should I just get the RP?
    I am just a hobbyist and a school teacher. I am upgrading from Canon T5i and choosing either R or RP.
    I take photos of the Milky Way, school sport events (panning shots) and vacations.
    Is the autofocus of RP having the same speed with the R?

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can afford the R, I'd recommend going that direction. But coming from the T5i, it'll be a noticeable difference. Either will make you feel like you've made a great choice.

    i do car photography, sometimes more at low light situations since car meets usually happen at night , I'm planning on upgrading from a Canon Rebel T7 , worth it ?

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Definitely! You'll be amazed at how the R performs. You might check out the EOS RP, if you are looking for something slightly more affordable than the R. I have a pretty recent video on the RP on my channel if it's helpful.

    • @Mbm-billiards
      @Mbm-billiards 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can tell you the RP handles low light car photography amazingly. I use the RP and love it for those style of shooting.

    • @Mbm-billiards
      @Mbm-billiards 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So I shoot with the RP and have the 70-200mm RF glass. I’m doing High School sports also now. The RP auto focus can not keep up in continuous shooting. Out of 5/7 images it takes it only gets focus in 2 or 3 of them. Due to being low light would you recommend the R5 or the R6. Or should I even wait and see what this R7 they are speaking of is going to be. The R3 is a little out of my price range though.

    • @WesKriesel
      @WesKriesel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Mbm-billiards I think you would find the R6 is a great camera for those uses. I sometimes think the R5 is a bit more than I need and would definitely consider the R6 instead.
