  • After being hired to inspect and possibly authenticate this beautiful 1970 Chevelle SS, we discover this Chevelle has been hiding an authentic RPO SS454 LS6 with a clear VIN sequence stamp from another 1970 Chevelle. A stunning iconic Cranberry red with black bucket seat 4 speed car that is ready to enjoy. You may reach me at pnichols26@yahoo.com if you need assistance authenticating, purchasing, or selling your 1970 Chevelle or if you have a rare find muscle car to share. Thanks for watching.

      I fully agree with you.
But, when you get up in the rarefied level of an all original 50 year old car, things change and what i did to one is far different than what a purist is after.

Another great job Patrick. Truth be told, most of these cars were beat to death and off the road by the mid to late 70s. I worked in a Chevrolet service dept when the 70 Chevelle was 6 years old. I recall only one coming in for service. A Cortez Silver hardtop. The owner wanted only GM parts used so he came to us. Yes there are survivors and I enjoy seeing them. However, this owner built this car to his taste as you mention. It is a beauty. Please follow up. Maybe the LS6 car missing that engine is still alive.

I'm the kind of guy that would make it my daily driver. That's just me. Cars are built to be driven. Even this beautiful car.
My 1st Chevelle was a '70 and I was the second owner. I bought it from a little ol' man who ordered it with a 350, a 3 speed manual transmission on the floor, bench seat and the SS dash, with all the gauges, a 12 bolt rear, non posi. Beautiful maroon paint, black vinyl roof, tan interior, but the dash pad was black. He was from Texas and ordered it there and told me he sure did have the go arounds to get them to put the black stripes on it, because it didn't have an SS hood or a cowel induction hood. He said, "I got them put on otherwise he wouldn't take the car." Ha! The car was 7 years old when I bought it for a whopping $800 dollars. 27,000 miles on her too. I loved that car, but being broke and a 2nd baby on the way, I had to let her go. Sad, sad day.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it ! Thanks everyone, bye for now.

This car reminds me of a story my dad has told me that is true. Back in the late 80’s early 90’s when he was building his 57 Chevy for street racing he stumbled upon a 396 Big Block from a 1970 Chevelle SS396 Cranberry Red with black stripes car and the owner was selling the engine because he was cloning the car to be an LS6. The owner of the car had acquired a real LS6 for his car. This was back in I believe around 1992 in Southern California. Would be crazy if this was that car.
(Edit: My dad does still have the 396 and it now sits in my uncles 65 Chevelle pro street car as my dad upgraded to a 468 Big Block for his car)

Once upon a time..long long ago...I had a friend who had a brother who had an old Chevelle sitting in their garage with 4 flat tires. When I saw that old '69 Chevy sitting there, I asked if he would sell it to me. He did. for $600... I towed it home, cleaned it up, and started to Enjoy my '69 SS396 with the Rockcrusher 4spd.. After a while of owning and restoring it, I called a friend who managed the local Chevy dealer to look up some parts for me...come to find out, I was the owner of a 425 horsepower factory race Chevelle that came from a Dealer, not supposed to be sold... I raced that car up and down California for about a year...just kid street racing stuff...and finally got around to getting it prepped for getting the Original Blue paint...that weekend it was supposed to go to a body shop? A Drunk Driver in a Mazda hit me Head On and Totaled it....but at least it didn't die...it wasn't streetable after that, but guy bought it and Track Raced it for years...oh well...my little story...I loved that car...that car would pull the front wheels in second and third....damn it was FAST...

I'm assuming it was drag raced and drag cars have to be far safer than Street cars so don't get how it couldn't have been made to drive on the road again. I do not remember EVER seeing a Chevy product with Polyglas tires until the 70 1/2 Camaros with F60 Polyglas GT's. Polyglas tires were the hot setup for Pure Stock classes back then, they were much better than the Goodyear Wide Treads that came on Corvettes, the Uniroyals that came on my friend's '68 Camaro RS-SS, the Firestone Sport Car 200's and Wide Tread GT's that came on '68-69 Z-28's. I am a little disappointed he did not mention this reality, that this car would not have had Polyglas tires on it from the factory, but Patrick Glenn Nichols has an INCREDIBLE amount of knowledge in the minutia of these cars, I always love these videos.

I bought a '70 Corvette back in the '90's. It had a 454/4 speed. The engine had the stamp pad crudely ground off and restamped as a '71 LS6. The engine designation on the console was also changed with '71 LS6 specs. I assumed the engine was just a run of the mill 454. It had a GM aluminum intake though. After driving the car all summer, including a couple of runs at the drag strip, it ran 13.20's at 105 with a lot wheel spin, I decided to do some work to the engine. I removed the intake to discover it had rectangular port heads. After checking dates and casting numbers it turned out to be a complete '70 LS6. I sold it to a guy restoring a '70 LS6 Chevelle. He even stated that the intake was an original LS6 intake although he said that Chevelles used a spacer and it was not on the Corvette for hood clearance. I assume he knew what he was talking about. Anyway, I took the money and built an oval port headed 454 that put my Corvette down in the low 12's and it wasn't nearly as high strung.
