Harold Miner: “Baby Jordan” Why This NEXT MICHAEL JORDAN’s Career was OVER at 25 years old | FPP

  • He was given the nickname “Baby Jordan” in college. Not only did he bear a striking physical resemblance to Michael Jordan, he also had similar athleticism and dominated the college game as one of the best USC Trojans in Program History, with Sports Illustrated even naming his as the 1992 College Basketball Player of the year, ahead of Shaquille O’Neal, Alonzo Mourning and Christian Laettner. Unfortunately for Harold Miner when he got to the NBA, he could never get close to the Michael Jordan comparisons. His game may have been too one dimensional, and there were improvements that he could have made, but less talked about is how unstable his time with the Miami Heat was in regards to playing time, add that to the fact that he had a degenerative knee issue which started deteriorating as soon as he got to the NBA, and his short career makes more sense. But Harold Miner was one of the most exciting players during his short 4 year career, as his above the rim play was top notch, leading him to winning the 1993 and 1995 Slam Dunk Contests. He showed flashes, but could never keep it consistent, however, his circumstances were less than ideal, and maybe in another situation, we’d be talking about Harold Miner in a different light. Nonetheless, he handled all of the adversity with grace and walked away from the game in a better financial position than when he started.

Harold Miner got drafted by the wrong team. I don't know why the Heat drafted him when they already had Steve Smith, Glen Rice and Brian Shaw getting so many touches

It was the worst case scenario for him. Kevin Lougherty was a former Jordan coach and fan boy who was offended by the nickname. It could have worked with Smith at one Miner at 2 and Rice at 3. Miner was ahead of Shaw until he got hurt in 94. I had an issue with Bimbo Coles who I thought was terrible.

Miner made me wish I was left-handed, I was always rooting for this guy. I always felt he got the short end of the stick going to that Miami team, his rookie year numbers were solid, on a team that didn't have Glen Rice doing most of the shooting, things could've been different. And also, with today's medicine, I don't know if that "degenerative knee condition" would've played out like that. He would've fared better in today's league, I think, a bit ahead of his time for his own good. Very glad he's doing OK.

I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. I was SO high on Harold Miner! Getting Harold Miner basketball cards were a big deal, as they were worth money, back then. In 1994, when it was rumored that the Blazers would trade Clyde Drexler for Harold Miner, I wanted that SO much! The Blazers were no longer championship-caliber, and they needed a young prime time shooting guard. I thought Miner could have scored 18 ppg on a bad team, which Portland would have been in 1994-95.

I'm a few years younger than you. I remember the Miner hype when I was a teenager in the early-mid 90s. The truth is, back in the 80s and most of the 90s, the general public really didn't know or understand what made Michael Jordan, well....."Michael Jordan". It wasn't just the raw talent and being 6'6, it was incredible mental fortitude and psychotic desire to win. There was one radio sports commentator back around in 1992 in my city who called it, they said Miner is 6'4 and Jordan is 6'6, and first and foremost from a physical standpoint it would be hard pressed for Miner to replicate everything MJ did in the NBA, and second and more important, this radio guy knew what most of us didn't, he went on and on about MJ's mental toughness. which as a little teenager back then I understood, but not really. Most people thought as long as a dude can do a leaner dunk, pump fake dunk, or rock the cradle dunk, well he's MJ. That thinking is still around today, now it's more "he's the next Kobe!".

As a native Miami fan since before the original arena was being built, I loved HM pick and was so excited after his first season.
Then, in the first game of his second season, I knew his career was over.
He could beat anyone 1v1 but as soon as a second defender showed up, he became a turnover machine. He lacked the vision to pass out of a double team and didn’t have the ability to dribble away as the second defender broke off to attack him. Every team after that first game simply doubled him as soon as he got the ball.
He could not find a way to defeat a double team. That plus he was a terrible defender and below average shooter. Short players were too quick for him and taller players were to strong.
He was a tweener who could jump out of the building but lacked vision and shooting touch. A liability on the court.
Again, few were better than Miner 1v1, but every other aspect of his game was below average. Once they figured him out, his career was over.

I liked the weird wrinkles you used to get in rookie deals. The salaries definitely got out of whack, but it was cool seeing guys value different things in negotiations like more years vs more flexibility. Guys that got picked earlier taking less than others (like baseball picks still do) in order to get other concessions, etc.
I understood the response to how out of whack everything got, but I do get nostalgic when I see stuff like that 5th year clause Miner negotiated.

While I was born in Seattle in 1973, one of my WORST life decisions was going to USC for my freshman and sophomore years. Nothing against USC, Los Angeles or California. I am a HOMEBODY, who should have gone to the University of Washington from the outset. But, a good thing DID come out of it: At the recreational building, I got to play pickup with Harold Miner. I threw him an alley-oop, which frankly wasn't hard to do, playing with Joe Schmoes. He also tried to teach me how to shoot. It's fine if he dominates the ball, playing with Joe Schmoes like me. But, when he did that with established NBA veterinarian teammates like Ron Seikaly, Glendon Rice, and Steve Smith, that naturally didn't go over well. "Harold Miner with the ball, teammates be dambed!"

Hamilton? He's not the most talked about player from that team but it's not like he's a forgotten man either. I remember him playing with MJ on the Wizards prior to that and let's not forget the guy made back to back Finals in 2004 and 2005. If fans don't know him, they should.

Miner had a mid range shot but didn't have a outside shot( nor 3pt making ability) nor not enough quickness or conditioning to compete on the defensive end towards faster players at both guard spots Carter came into the league with a outside touch

Miner given that label was his death knell. I agree with another commenter that it was a lazy comparison, but I also put way too much pressure on a guy that I don’t even think had rounded out his game enough to warrant being in the NBA. He just wasn’t good enough.
