Larry Hughes: Drafted over FUTURE HALL OF FAMERS because of a Promise… But was he a BUST?? | FPP

  • If you strictly look at his scoring numbers, the career of Larry Hughes is disappointing. He was a top 10 pick out of Saint Louis University, where he had been one of the Nation’s best scorers during the 1998 NCAA Basketball season. But, the value of Larry Hughes lies in everything he gave you outside of scoring, as he was a stat sheet stuffer throughout his career, giving you rebounds, assists and steals, and if he wasn’t giving you offense, you could still rely on him for defense. In hindsight, the Philadelphia 76ers taking Larry Hughes #8 overall in the 1998 NBA Draft, is a mistake, seeing as how the two picks immediately after him were Dirk Nowitzki, and Paul Pierce. But at the time, he seemed like a sure star and a backcourt consisting of him and Allen Iverson was going to be exciting. However, it wouldn’t last long as he would soon be shipped to Golden State where he would briefly team with guys like Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Jason Richardson. Eventually he would sign with the Washington Wizards as an underrated member of the 2003 Wizards team who featured Michael Jordan in his farewell season, as well as Jerry Stackhouse. He would eventually be rejoined by Arenas and Jamison, but then after the best season of his career which saw him put up career highs across the board and lead the league in steals; he would sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers as a potential sidekick to LeBron James. But he had been a consolation signing when Cleveland couldn’t get Michael Redd, and sadly his time in Cleveland was marred with injury and inconsistency, as well as the passing of his little brother, Justin. As Hughes’ time with the Cavs was not at all what fans expected. After this, he would bounce around teams for the rest of his career as a solid all around player who could give you valuable minutes even if his shot wasn’t falling. At the end of the day, Hughes career looks disappointing based on his draft position, but he was so much more than an inconsistent shooter, yet doesn’t seem to be acknowledged for that.

I liked Larry's game. This is a great video. I think Larry had a lot to offer and I loved his game. Defensively he could guard the 1, 2, and even 3 and was a steals specialist. Offensively, I always hated that, over and over, he ended up on "stacked" guard teams. In an interesting twist he did wonderful in the PG role though I think teams tried to force him to play the 2 when, technically, Stackhouse, MJ, AI, LeBron, and so many others were fighting for that "role" as an iso playmaker. This guy was quick an adaptive and I think coaches should have kept him at the PG/1 as he had great court vision and solid numbers from three. Under the right circumstances he's more in the Steve Nash/GP/Jason Kidd type guard though that is not taking away from any of his other abilities.

Often, he says he was so good at defense in practice that it made him better offensively cause who else could guard him any better than Larry. Definitely changed my outlook on him. To me, he was another guy on Brons bus growing up. I'm glad Gil educated me about Hughes being an actual solid person.

I disagree nowhere near a bust. Being 25:46 drafted 10th in the NBA, is like being drafted in the second round in the NFL. More guys miss there than hit and dude played 14 seasons that is nowhere near bust, especially when you consider like 10 of those seasons or digits. Yeah the, Paul Pierce and Dirk Nowitzki thing maybe makes the poke pic not look great but I’m sure they were guys drafted before Larry that weren’t as good.
