"My Name is Mud" is one of my favorite Primus songs. You're always going to get something unexpected from a Primus song. The instrumentals are always going to be insane...the lyrics are unpredictable.
My name is mud is the song that got me into Primus. Saw them only once live. Opened for Rush and the Rush fans weren’t having it. Until Primus closed their set with YYZ!
I forgot all about Primus! I had a roommate who LOVED them, and I ended up going to their concert with him. The "seats" were just rows of grassey slopes and got pretty slick when they got wet. We got separated and I slipped in spilled beer and slid down a few rows. I was just like, "Oh. This is how I die. Stomped at a concert for a band where I only know two songs." But then some huge dude picked me up, set me back on my feet, and stood behind me the whole rest of the show to make sure I was okay. (Nobody even tried to grab my ass! It was great.) I never caught his name, but thank you, large kind man at Compton Terrace 20 something years ago!
He's a bit of an acquired taste, for sure, but when shopping for a new bass dude would test out potential purchases by playing the bassline to "Roundabout." That says something.
I saw Primus on tour with Anthrax and Public Enemy... Must have been thirty years ago. I don't remember much but I'll never forget Les Claypool on his bass guitar doing a back and forth scratch battle with Public Enemy's turntable DJ. It was stupid cool.
@@lisemzarate4029 Yeah, '91 or '92. In Seattle. I was 18 maybe 19. We got downtown early before the show and we actually saw Flavor Flav on the escalator at the Westlake mall. Love Primus! Thank you 😊 Les Claypool is a genius on bass. They've done a cover of "The Devil went down to Georgia." Metallica was blown away by his audition for the band.
This was an awesome suprise, Primus is one of my all time favorite bands. They take a bit to get used to but the 3 of them are unbelievably talented musicians, Less Claypool is regularly regarded as one of the best Bass players off all time. They have so many great songs, Too many puppies, American life, John the fisherman, Bob Shake hands with beef the list goes on
Primus is too good. You should check out the song John the Fisherman next! The bass goes so hard on that track. Although, the bass goes hard on every Primus song
The singer's name is Les Claypool. Absolutely an influential bassist. His style of playing is unmatched by anyone else from the 90s on. Technically speaking, In theory, it is impossible to sing or even play lead over his style... but yet here they are doing it and doing it well! This was my first introduction to Primus back when they first came to light. Been a fan ever since! Tommy The cat is another great song to listen to next!
Yeah, that's why their guitarist (Larry Lalonde) plays such noodly guitar over the top rather than any kind of traditional riffs or shredding. Because Les's basslines are so complex, the guitar kind of has to sit back and let the bass take the lead, otherwise it would get way too busy. Musical composition is always a balance and Primus flipped the script on how bands usually use the guitar-bass combo which is part of what gives them their unique sound.
Part of the thing with the nachos in the video is the album this came from was titled Sailing the Seas of Cheese. The lead singer of Primus is Les Claypool and he is also the bass player. He is known as a world class bass player for his unusual technics of tapping, slapping, and flamenco style strumming. The bass is a main instrument in his songs. You really want another good one by them do "My Name Is Mud". Les acts out as the main character in that video... and he is a character... LOL 😁
One of the most unique bands you will ever hear. I think Les using the bow on a stand up bass in Mr Krinkle is probably their most unappreciated sounds. Truly amazing.
Les Claypool on vocals and bass. He actually auditioned for Metallica after Cliff died. They had no idea what he was doing. The guitarist was one of legend Jie Satriani's guitar students as was Steve Via abd Metallica's Kirk Hammett. Tim Herb Alexander is a great drummer as well.
What you described as a funky guitar is actually the bass. It's a particularly challenging bass riff on a 6-string bass Les Claypool is an insane bassist.
Throws hands up in the air, “Well… it’s Primus”. Everyone sounds like they are doing their own thing, complete chaos. But manage to pull it off. You should check out Gwar. They are rockin’ aliens from outer space. I hope you’re intrigued enough to give them a try.
GWAR!!! might be a bit crazy for you guys, but they are surly cool to see live.the band is pretty extreme visually, but they are the nicest people in real life.really cool band, but very intense.I was on stage with GWAR at a concert, was put through a fake meat grinder by them!!😃they are one of a kind!!definitely worth the experience.😄
I know a bunch of people probably already said this, but the bassist and lead man for Primus is Les Claypool. This brings back memories from '90 ('91 ?) when this came out, I was working at Kemp Mill Records and bought Sailing the Seas of Cheese on a whim. A couple of my coworkers needed ride home that night, so we're just bouncing around to this in my car as we're driving all around Springfield, Alexandria, and Arlington on some weeknight. Cool how music can bring up the most random memories.
The frontman -- singer/bassist now has a band with Sean Lennon -- the Claypool Lennon Delirium. Yes, that Sean Lennon. And they're truly worth checking out.
I've never heard of Primus before, so this was my first time hearing this song too! It was trippy! Lol. Btw, I love your Stevie Nicks shirt ... she's amazing! Mission accomplished - y'all made me smile again today! :D
I hope that when you eventually get to Tommy the Cat (probably their most well-known song), you do the album version and not get talked into the live version. It's hard enough to understand the lyrics in the studio. The live version would only give you an impression of the music. Cool, but you want to hear the full song, lyrics and music both. It's one of those live performances that's really good, and everyone wants to recommend it, but it should be heard AFTER being familiar with the studio version to be able to really appreciate it.
Proud of you guys for trying again, Les uses his quirky voice to his advantage and tho it can be hard to catch the lyrics, the more you listen, the clearer they get. Pudding time, To defy the laws of tradition and My name is mud, were family favorites in our home, Tommy the cat was remade in the late 90's I think, but the original live from the pudding time e.p is my favorite, and first Primus song I ever heard, John the Fisherman is awesome too.
Primus is Awesome! Les Claypool is one in a million. You know he tried out for bass player of Metallica back when in the day and they turned him down because he was awesome but just not the style of player they were looking for. You should react to the songs My Name Is Mud, or Tommy The Cat next! I love seeing Amber now embracing the heavy!! You gotta sprinkle in some heavier bands here and there, there is so much you've NEVER reacted to. Try SEVENDUST!! The song Live Again is a good intro! Also if you liked this song you'd love Suicidal Tendencies too, they're quirky too. How Will I Laugh Tomorrow is an amazing song! So is Nobody Hears. Just saying.... R.SENAL KNOWS METAL!!! 🤘😁😎
I first heard Primus 2 years ago when I saw this song on some MTV 90’s channel late at night. I was so confused what was going on but I couldn’t stop thinking about the song for some reason. The more I listened to it the more I loved it. Now, to me, it’s a classic. Les’ bassline sounds like he’s playing multiple at once and Larry plays those cool textures on guitar.
Being from the Bay Area, and having seen Primus 6 or 7 times live - the best being when they opened for Public Enemy and Anthrax, what an amazing show THAT was - I’ve been thinking about this forever, but I believe that they are the 3 greatest musicians together in a rock band. So much is put on about how great Les Claypool is, and he IS, but as a band?! They’re unbelievable. That’s all.
Loved!! watching you experiencing Jerry ... to me it's an existential story of life - Jerry "He drove so goddamn fast / He never did win no checkered flags / But he never did come in last" ... "Jerry was a race car driver / Twenty-two years old / One too many cold beers one night / Wrapped himself around a telephone pole, go!" Sad :( but so can be (is) life - loved watching you guys!

@Alexander Griffin yes, Richard Willis is the best. He is the only one I can leave my investment with and think less about it, he is my money maker. I just received $13,000 of my investment last month. I am very happy because he is leading me to financial freedom.
I love you two, and glad I found this reaction, as Primus is one of my faves. I never liked Primus back when they first came out, but I have come to really appreciate their TALENT. The 3 of them together are SO tight.
You need to check out Primus - My Name Is Mud, John The Fisherman, & Too Many Puppies, I saw them open for Rush on their Sailing the Sea of Cheese tour
Primus, Helmet, Rage, 311, those bands opened my fresh teenage ears up to a whole other style. I was never the same. I hear radio music from that time period now, and I'm like "why don't I remember this song", oh yeah, I was listening to the good stuff back then.
Les Claypole is the lead singer, bassist of the year for like 10 straight years and an unbelievable rabbit hole of music if your so inclined. John the fisherman is a 🔥 song
*You MUST react to 'Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers' - Live Woodstock '94....and 'My name is Mud' is another Must. The 'Dude' is Les Claypool on bass and singing....and Yes, They Do Suck! LOL* 😂
Bassist/lead vocal Claypool was born in Richmond, California. He only sings with a mock accent. And not to forget the genius Larry Lalonde on guitar! 'Sacred Cow' is another great one, that really slaps! (Literally and Figurative).
The thing about Les Claypool's vocals. He was born in California, but he took the vocal style from a band he loved, which also happens to be my favorite band: the Residents. They're an avant-garde experimental rock band that's currently celebrating their official 50th anniversary. The band itself was based in San Francisco, but the members were from Louisiana. When I first heard Primus I thought it was the lead singer of the Residents (the band, except for a few members, is anonymous). A lot of what Primus does, like the costumes in "Winona's Big Brown Beaver", is a homage to them, right down to wearing a "Classic Eyeball" shirt during their appearance in "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey". Don't know if the Residents would be something you'd necessarily like, but I would suggest "Constantinople" (audio only - not the video) or "Hello Skinny" (definitely with the official video) to start off with. Primus has actually done covers of both of those songs.
Primus is an enigma. everything before the Big brown beaver crap is epic, Fizzle Fry, Suck on This, Sailing the Sea's of cheese, and Pork Soda are epic, I group Primus with Jethro Tull, different styles but both are the brilliance of insanity
The bass player & singer, is Les Claypool. He's a very talented musician, he used to play drums, but eventually moved over to bass. The members of Primus became close friends with the members of Rush after Primus opened for Rush on several tours, and Geddy actually incorporated a bit of Les' style in his playing, even though Les grew up loving Geddy as one of his main influences. The bass he's playing (mostly just tapping here,) is a 6 string fretless bass, and it takes a lot of technique to play those well. But Les also has about a million side projects going on nearly all the time, including "The Claypool Lennon Delirium" with Sean Lennon (son of The Beatles John Lennon & Yoko Ono,) "The Fearless Flying Frog Brigade," "Oysterhead," featuring Les Claypool, guitarist Trey Anastasio of Phish and drummer Stewart Copeland of The Police, and a really wild band, "Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains," featuring Les, Buckethead on guitar, Brain (formerly of "Sausage," was was Les' band before forming Primus,) and the late, great Bernie Worrell on Keyboards, best known for his work with Parliment & Funkadelic, as well as The Talking Heads! These are just a few of his side projects that come to mind off-hand!
I LOVE Amber's reaction when it gets heavy. This is a Bay Area band that writes songs based in different cities in the Bay Area. El Sob is El Sobrante and Richmond are two cities in the Bay Area. I didn't understand that until I moved up there, and then when I heard the lyrics back, I was like, "Yep, that's what these places are like." Also, the song is supposed to be what a band sounds like when Sailing the Seas of Cheese, which is the album where this song comes from.
Awesone Primus! My hometown "El Sob" in the house. Kirk Hammett (fellow class of 80) and Les Claypool (Class of 81) De Anza high. As the song says "El Sob number 1" So are both Kirk and Les in their field.
Such a cool band. Saw them at the boathouse in Norfolk va. It was a tiny venue right on the water. So many big bands would come through right before they got really big. I saw so many great bands there for like 10 bucks. My hubby and I went there almost every weekend. When we were young teens early 20 s. Loved discovering new bands there. It was torn down a few years ago after a hurricane. A huge loss to Virginia history. I hope someone grabbed the wall where the bands signed. So many greats.
Primus, and especially the bassist Les Claypool, love writing songs about the shenanigans and problems that happen in small town USA. This is one of those songs, and it's only about a small town racecar driver killing himself drunk driving and an aging firefighter who was forced to retire even though he was still "strong as any man alive"
I dunno if you two have ever watched South Park before, but either way, check out the intro song to the show and I’m sure you’ll be easily able to guess who performs it lol
Your face during the Nacho intro was amazing lmao One of their funkier and more cohesive tracks also has one of my favorite song names ever: "Shake Hands With Beef" - the drums and bass create such a hard groove.
Growing up going to tons of shows in the 90’s I’ve been in countless mosh pits and seen plenty of hard bands but the only time I feared for my safety was when I saw primus in Orlando around 96 at the embassy. It was craziest energy. Fucking amazing! Everything was so heavy, so hard!
The lead singer Les Claypool is easily a top 3 bassist of all time. This man's skill is insane and his variety of voices are iconic
What Bran said!
LC and Victor Wooten tie for 1st IMO

A lot of what Primus does, like the costumes in "Winona's Big Brown Beaver", is a homage to them, right down to wearing a "Classic Eyeball" shirt during their appearance in "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey".
Don't know if the Residents would be something you'd necessarily like, but I would suggest "Constantinople" (audio only - not the video) or "Hello Skinny" (definitely with the official video) to start off with. Primus has actually done covers of both of those songs.
Primus has a deep discography of amazing, fun, quirky, and dark songs all played with an ultra-high level of musicianship. Well worth the deep dive.
Funny how sometimes when you hear the first song of a band and it's still your favorite song after all these years, that is true of this Primus.
The intro to "Fish On (Fisherman Chronicles, Chapter II)" is what made me fall in love with Primus.
Primus is an enigma. everything before the Big brown beaver crap is epic, Fizzle Fry, Suck on This, Sailing the Sea's of cheese, and Pork Soda are epic, I group Primus with Jethro Tull, different styles but both are the brilliance of insanity
Fun facts: Primus toured with rush back in the early 90's. They also did the theme song for the TV show. "South Park"
Primus is definitely on of the most unique bands there is. They actually have a genre tag in iTunes/MP3 metadata (ID3 tag) named after them.
Again, another trio of fantastic musicians.
Its hilarious you guys said ".....well....its Primus..". As back in the day this is EXACTLY how everyone described Primus to each other lol.
Les Claypool. One of the all time great bass players.
This song live is crazy! The entire pit just erupts when he hits that "Go!"! They were a fun show to see!!
"My name is MUDD" Performed at Woodstock 94!
“The guitar is really funky.” That’s the bass, ma’am.
You cant help but headbang this jam, love it!
"i'm scared". LOL!
You gotta try 'Scissorman'
Primus is genius. Sometimes Demonic, with their use of discordant sound structures playing off of each other, yet still so harmonized.
Les Claypool is the lead singer/bassist. "Fish on" is a good song that's easier to understand and gives a display of his bass playing
Love to watch you guys watch Primus! Haha! I think this was the first song I heard from them then Tommy the cat!
I'm glad you guys looped back to check out more Primus.
Primus is a mix of fantastic music , mixed with maniacal stories and animalistic solos from each member
I dunno if you two have ever watched South Park before, but either way, check out the intro song to the show and I’m sure you’ll be easily able to guess who performs it lol
Jerry was a race car driver, 22 yo, one too many cold beers one night-wrapped him self around a telephone pole-GO🤘🖖✌️🎸🥁🎤🎸🤯
Primus is insanely good. Jazz/Funk/Prog. metal Fusion all wrapped up into one and it's fantastic.
I love that there are generations of kids waiting to discover Primus..
I have seen many concerts in my lifetime. Primus is one of the most interesting bands I have ever seen. Les Claypool is genius!
Your face during the Nacho intro was amazing lmao
One of their funkier and more cohesive tracks also has one of my favorite song names ever: "Shake Hands With Beef" - the drums and bass create such a hard groove.
So many good songs from these guys! One of my favorites from early on is, Too Many Puppies.
Primus is a national treasure! So crazy!!!
The look on y'alls faces at the beginning, lmao! I was dying!
Amber's like "what am I watching here?"
