You guys definitely have to check out some more stuff by Primus. I know that they’re a bit quirky, but that’s what makes them so special. I would recommend Jerry Was a Race Car Driver or Tommy the Cat next.
sorry, i cant really edit comments....what i meant was....how epic is that live version of "tommy the cat" ppl always react to? i think its at bonaroo....anyway, its amazing as f, but the crowd is super , epically loud & i just feel that epic parts of the song get lost in the roar of the crowd & other sound issues, not always, but with many live performances......that doesnt make certain live performances any less amazing, im just saying, im a fan official audio for newbs
Hard not to smile at Primus in general! They are so creative and don't take themselves seriously. Top that with *INCREDIBLE* musicianship and this is a band to watch more. 👍👍
John The Fisherman, Too Many Puppies and My Name Is Mud are my favorites. If you want to hear another quirky band check out Bloodhound Gang - Kiss Me Where It Smells Funny
Love to see you guys enjoyed Primus. Check out Jerry Was A Racecar Driver, Tommy The Cat, John The Fisherman and Too Many Puppies next. But really hard to go wrong with any Primus.
I remember when this song used to get played on the radio when I was a kid😂😂I couldn't figure out why my mom always changed the station when it came on😂
It's good to see you 2 back to doing reactions. You should check out Jerry Was a Racecar Driver. It really shows Les' playing skills. They do have a video about how they made this video.
In the song "Mr Krinkle", they half-jokingly describe their sound as "across between Jimi Hendrix, Bo Cephus, Cher, and James Brown." But I once heard someone call them "Tool for Hillbillies", and now that's all I can think of when I hear them.
Absolutely. I was in my 20's in the 90's and I clearly remember that whenever some more Primus came out my friends and I saying things like "well, here's some more stuff that absolutely no one else would think of nor could play".
You really need to watch a live performance of Primus to really appreciate Les Claypool's skills on the bass. My suggestion is to listen to Those Damned Blue Collar Tweekers live from Woodstock 94 but, if you do, find a video of the FULL set and scroll to this song. For some reason, almost every video of just that song has the coolest part (Tribute to Jimi Hendrix from 1969 Woodstock) edited out??? I was there in the crowd and have been sold on Primus ever since, seeing them at over a dozen times and they never disappoint!
One of my favorite bands. Les claypool is one of the best bassist of all time. The way he plays will absolutely blow your mind. The other 2 members Larry and Tim are also extremely talented at their craft.
You think this is an unusual song? Les Claypool also worked with a band called Green Jello (which was forced to change their name to Green Jelly). You really should check out their video interpretation of The Three Little Pigs.
I had the great pleasure of seeing Primus do a tribute show playing the Rush album Hemispheres, where the first set was new and old Primus and the second set was the Rush album in its entirety! It was a fantastic show! Primus is just one of those quirky bands that just has amazing musicality! I LOVE “Mr.Krinkle”, and “The Air is Getting Slippery” or “Lee Van Clef”!
Great reaction guys!! Oh boy Sam...so innocent! You absolutely NEED to know the double entendre/naught connotation to truly 'get' this song!! Yes, Les' bass playing is off the charts - actually, all of them are!! Amazing tune! Cheers.
I always loved the video, where they're dressed up like fiberglass molded cartoonish cowboys like you'd see on a carnival ride at a county fair or something.
Think how many iconic bands you've been exposed to. Yet this is instantly likeable. I like how the guitar tone wails, yet plays in back of the bass. One of the best trio's out there. This video really stands out. Another beautiful award winning video is Tonite,Tonite by the Smashing Pumpkins. Kinda Jules Verne-like.
A little FYI, Primus is considered part of the Bay Area Thrash Metal scene. Larry was in Death Metal pioneers Possessed and Blind Illusion and Les was in Blind Illusion as well. East Bay in the house!! The name on the kick drum is a tribute to Buck Naked and the Bare Bottom Boys (another great SF/Bay Area band). Buck was murdered in Golden Gate Park by a transient
After this if in keeping with a lighter theme in music or fun.. and strange, I recommend GreenJelly “Three little pigs” it’s bizarre heavy metal styled version
Speaking of South Park, they referenced the Primus song Jerry Was A Racecar Driver being in the game Guitar Hero. Definitely check that one out. Also try My Name Is Mud for one of their earlier hits. Every song of theirs is different and amazing, so you can’t go wrong.
Lots of songs could be suggested to follow that one. I'm an old 70's prog nerd but Primus was my biggest discovery in the early 2000 (thanks to my daughter). Every song from them is great. Try Over The Falls to have a complete different taste of them. Les on Contrabass.
Another band with Claypool on bass is Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains; A most delightful punk/funk/rock mix. I suggest starting with _Buckethead._
Little more context to the outfits they wore, similar ones were used before this vid was made by the Eveready battery company in their TV adds and also Wynona Judd was very popular back in 95, that being said this is a top ten music video.
People ask what kind of music is Primus. It's just Primus. I don't know what else to call it. Tommy the cat is another great one. Lots of awesome music in those days.
Nobody ever mentions Primus and the Chocolate Factory. It is a cover of the entire soundtrack for "WIlly Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," and it's amazing.
I think it was Winona Ryder, wasn't it? Actually, IIRC, her boyfriend accused Primus of writing about his girlfriend, and they're like "dude - no last names were mentioned in this song".
As for how they did it, there's a “Making of” episode on TH-cam, where they show it. But to give you guys the gist, they recorded this at half speed, since those rubber cowboy suits were pretty damn near impossible to walk around in. That's also why their movements look twitchy.
Not exactly what they said. They all knew each other before that even happened. They're all from the same music scene. He was in Blind Illusion. so much so, their guitarist is Kirk Hammett's guitar tech. When he left to join Metal Church. Larry LaLonde left Possessed and took his place in Blind Illusion with Les Claypool on base. Incase you didn't know, Blind Illusion is an American progressive thrash metal band. Les was a founding member. He left because metal wasn't his thing. although he did come back off and on over the years. Les and Kirk went to the same high school. They said he had his own thing going with Primus. Which he was playing with off and on with various line ups over those same years. All that other stuff is just stories, possibly an inside joke. He didn't even know the songs or that Metallica was that big. He had just started playing with Larry. Put out a Blind Illusion and six Primus albums over the next 6 years. They didn't need each other at the time, and Les would have never fit what they had going anyway. Think it was more Kirk's thinking than his. He's not a metal guy.
@bettyrose959 when I watched METALLICA, SOME KIND OF MONSTER/ "METALLICA IN THERAPY" I REMEMBER THEM saying Les auditioned and they said he was "TOO GOOD" guess I remember wrong
@@CoreyWickramasekera Again, if said it wasn't serious. He wasn't a heavy metal guy and didn't even know there songs. But, believe what you want. They had a great bass player. Had nothing to do with Les being to good. He didn't show up to land the gig. OTHERWISE HE WOULD HAVE LEARNED THEIR SONGS FIRST. He never tried.
Les Claypool did a fun side band with another silly guy, guitarist Brian Keheo , called “Dou de Twang “ They do a great version of the Bee Gee’s song “Staying Alive “.
I wouldn't try to do lyrical analysis of Primus songs. Though, this one originated from the singer/bassist, Les Claypool, getting spooked by a beaver while fly fishing, if I recall correctly. If you want more strange 90s music, you should check out Mr. Bungle...stranger than Primus, though probably my favorite band of all time.
It goes back a bit further than that. According to a Kurt Vonnegut book I read over 20 years ago, not that I recall which one, the term "beaver" came from sports photographers who took pictures from underneath bleachers. They'd shout out "beaver" to let the other photographers know that there was a chick without underwear in the stands, using the seemingly random word so the people in the bleachers didn't know what was going on.
You need to go down the Prumus rabbit hole. Do "Jerry was a race car driver" and some of their other songs. Les Claypool is the leader of the band and that is why it is so musically bass player centered since Les is probably the greatest bass player ever!!!
"Playing coy" haha. Yeah Les Claypool is wild. South Park had a animation of him jammin' in the early seasons opening. He's one of the greatest bassists but very odd. He's collaborated with Sean Lennon, Stewart Copeland and others
Definitely not where id start with Primus. As someone already said, Jerry was a racecar driver , tommy the cat. But I'd say 'my name is mud', DMV or... Well I won't list too many. Nevermind one more. John the fisherman.
If you are looking for something older try Tanya Tucker...what's your Mommas name, Delta Dawn, Two Sparrows in a Hurricane. If you want something new try Liliac... Enter Sandman cover or I love Rock and Roll cover !
Since it's your first one, "Primus Sucks," means "I love Primus."

Indeed. Mike Patton has said that Primus is so good that they're bad and that they are so good that it pisses him off to listen to them LOL
Is that up there with "Green Jello Sucks"? lol
Les claypool is from another planet... Completely insane player.
maybe check out MISA (Band Maid) sometime
@@Bekka_Noyb I have, also from another planet wherever they came from... They know how to play bass.
Awesome bass playing;
My Name Is Mud

This, part deux.
Always love someone's first reaction to Primus, that look of "what the hell did I just see?"
You guys definitely have to check out some more stuff by Primus. I know that they’re a bit quirky, but that’s what makes them so special. I would recommend Jerry Was a Race Car Driver or Tommy the Cat next.
I would add "My Name Is Mud'
Excellent picks🤘
So many, just look up any high view Primus video and you probably will not be disappointed.
@@dedcowbowee Unpopular take, but I never really got into that song. I’ll have to give it another listen though!
YES! "Tommy the Cat" is a hilarious video and a great song.
Dude if you watch Primus- Those Damned Blue-Collar Tweekers live from woodstock... Your mind will be like WOW The bass will leave you flabbergasted

It strikes me that if, this track is the cowboys, Les stomping about the stage & going HIya-ya-ya is the Indians.
"Nice Beaver"

Naked gun movies are epic
Hard not to smile at Primus in general! They are so creative and don't take themselves seriously. Top that with *INCREDIBLE* musicianship and this is a band to watch more. 👍👍
Tommy The Cat, Blue Collared Tweekers
All depends on the mood. Can't go wrong with any.
I'll add Jillys on smack
Shake hands with beef
Good day. Primus Sucks!
John The Fisherman, Too Many Puppies and My Name Is Mud are my favorites. If you want to hear another quirky band check out Bloodhound Gang - Kiss Me Where It Smells Funny
Southbound Pachyderm is an incredible song and video as well.

One of the funniest greatest songs ever ! Laughed my ass off first time I heard it . Thanks for reacting to this .
This video blew my mind when first came out. Pretty wild. 😂
In the song "Mr Krinkle", they half-jokingly describe their sound as "across between Jimi Hendrix, Bo Cephus, Cher, and James Brown." But I once heard someone call them "Tool for Hillbillies", and now that's all I can think of when I hear them.

I’m pretty sure Danny Carey is on the drums in the three little pigs song
You guys should check out the video of how the costumes and prosthetics were done, it's crazy. 🤘✌️🤙

Who doesn't love Beaverton. Les is a phenomenal bass player
Back in mid 1990's I went to a primus concert just outside of Pittsburgh. Less claypool was fishing in a pond below concert hours before they went on.
Lol....haven't even watched this yet, and I know y'all gonna be lost!!! Lmao....can't wait to see it.....

This was one of my favourite videos on MuchMusic back in the day. 😅
Wow, Primus, much respect… 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Stopped by for Primus and to hear Sam say, also too. 😂
Theory! That entire music video was made around the concept of using giant playing cards and not having them seem absurd.
Claypool is a Beast on the Bass
You're watching like the Stevie Ray Vaughn, Hendrix, Roy Clark of bass players. Les is a goat.
Tommy the Cat live at Bonnaroo 2011 is a must see Primus video.

Yup. I seen this video on MTV. I was just like WTF and wanted to see it again and again.
