This is terrible. A terminal patient dies comfortably, and family sues him. Disgusting. Retired RN here.

@@psychedforlife7176honestly, I applaud him, as long as it was only to terminal patients or people who are truly ready to leave this world (like in Switzerland... You have to go through mental health evaluations and everything to ensure you're in a conscious and an uninebriated mind, and several other qualifications before they agree to do it). Honestly... I've seen too many people suffer for far too long. As someone with a couple of pretty severe chronic illnesses (the main being an ultra rare disease that has nearly killed me on multiple occasions, called aHUS), and I know that if I go back on dialysis... I'm not gonna make it. And that time **will come**. And I hope that if I'm ever ready to be done and close that painful book, that I can find someone willing to help me do it with dignity.

@@psychedforlife7176 There are no guidelines for intractable pain for a terminal disease other than to make the dying person so comfortable that they do not exhibit signs of pain. Would you like being turned when you are in the most horrible pain of your life that although you have been given a dose of pain medication within the “dosage guidelines” causes you to cry and scream? Is that right? Is that compassion? Medicine is not like cooking. One dose does not fit all. This Dr. did what he had to do for his patients to have as pain free death as possible. It’s uninformed opinions that harm all healthcare practitioners but traumatize patients and their families the most.

I’m a 70 yr old retired RN. When I became a nurse in 1974 patients didn’t suffer who had terminal illnesses like cancer. If they were in pain they were started on oral meds if appropriate. If pain was too strong they were given injections usually morphine every two hours. If they were still moaning and uncomfortable they were given Thorazine injections on the off hour until they died. No one was charged with murder because it was compassionate care. Families were grateful the people they loved didn’t suffer days on end. I don’t know what’s happened in this country where over time it’s a crime to let someone without any hope of recovery who is in horrendous pain to get as much medicine as they need to have as peaceful a death as possible. We can do it for our pets who we love as family but not for our human family. So shameful.

I've only read a few comments, but I'm guessing this man gave someone meds or did something to help someone dying from a terminal illness and was crucified for it, causing him to develop PTSD, eventually giving up his medical license.
I see comments from nurses comparing how terminally ill patients and their pain are treated today compared to the past, meaning today, meds are being withheld and the medical community is allowing people to suffer unnecessary. There is no good reason for this when there is no chance for survival. Who in their right mind wants anyone to suffer pain, unless you're a sadist? In today's world, no one should have to endure & suffer extreme pain. Why are they being allowed to now?

Agreed , my brothers best friend died slowly of brain cancer. How is it humane when we put down animals that are suffering but we won't allow humans or their families ( if they are incapable of deciding) the same dignity. My granpa died slowly too and he NEVER wanted that. And my mom does home Healthcare she takes care of residents and she has blatantly told me she will never allow herself to die like that, like how she sees those people die or how her father died. I've learned also that maybe my cousins husband wasn't so selfish. He killed himself while in kidney failure. There was no return for him. When I was young I thought he was selfish, but now that I'm older I see he spared his family alot of slow suffering, watching him continue to whither away. But because of the screwed up system I know that if my mom ever feels like she is dieing slowly she will self cancel. So to the medical world, thanks alot for forcing the surviving family members to have to go through that because you won't allow people to have a dignified death.

Not only was it within policy, it helped his patients die peacefully and painlessly. All of his patients were dying, and not only dying, they were in extreme pain. Not one of them had a chance of survival. I would hope that if I were dying and in extreme pain (or someone in my family or one of my friends), I would be shown the same mercy. Indeed, there are plenty of incompetent medical providers who act unethically, who should have their licenses sanctioned, suspended, or even revoked. This guy is one of them. You don't get to make up your own rules of how to practice medicine. There are lots of different ways that he could have accomplished the goal of providing comfort care that would have been appropriate. The way he did it violated the standards of his profession.

On October 25, 2018, Mount Carmel received their first formal report of Husel's conduct. It was not investigated seriously until November 19, 2018, when they broadened their investigation, noting the death of Rebecca Walls and an abnormally high dosage of fentanyl. One day later, another patient of Husel's named Melissa Penix had been declared deceased after a high dosage; Husel was immediately removed from patient-care duties on November 21, 2018, before being fired on December 5, 2018, after he had been held under suspicion for poisoning patients. Mount Carmel then contacted the State Medical Board of Ohio, meeting with the Franklin County prosecutor on the same day. Informing the State of Ohio Board of Nursing, Ohio state police became involved with the case not long thereafter on January 15, 2019. After having his license suspended and being charged with 25 counts of murder, Husel turned himself in to authorities on June 5, 2019. A judge later agreed to dismiss 11 of the murder counts.

I passed out in my home and broke broke, fractured and bruised ribs, and dislocated my left hip. I had a kidney infection that went septic and didn't know it. I thought it was just the cold and rain making my back hurt.
Then the EMT 's gave me 2mgs of fentanyl for pain and it worked for my until we got to the ER, after them moving me, checking vitals and CT scans. They gave me 6mgs of fentanyl. I lost 2 freaking days. P.S. I also weighted 400lbs then. I was used to high doses of opiates and fentanyl killed my butt.
So I can't feel sorry for someone who killed people using a drug. He should've gotten the same as the dealer who get caught after someone dies from using their dope. He should be in prison for several murder charges. He gave patients 600mgs and more.

I had a childhood friend who belonged to a family of 12 kids. They had a bedroom where all the kids slept in bunk beds. The first floor was the dining room. The kitchen and bathroom was outside covered with loose GI sheets. The whole family were tall as well and the boys heads practically touched the low ceiling. I did a sleepover a couple of times where my friend and I shared a bed. All the kids came in for dinner after kissing their mom. Dinner was a fried egg and rice each. Nobody complained and we were all happy. They became business entrepreneurs, a cop, a runway model, landowners… One did commit misdemeanours but became a community organizer. To this day, they treat me like family and will protect me and my family like their own.

Against her husbands wishes, and my relatives wishes, but she made me her POA for a reason because she knew, as much as i loved her that o wouldn't put her through BS just for my own selfish reasons. After she passed away and being called a murderer, etc by my family, i no longer talk to any of them. They wanted her alive for their own selfish reasons, for the checks that she was getting and pain pills she was receiving before o realized they were stealing and she wasn't getting, hence the drip.. i can only empathize a small amount with what he's been put through. He should've gotten his license back and a lawsuit for loss of wages, etc.. this is disgusting, yet big pharma gets away with how many millions of people who are still opioid addicts or have died because they were pushing oxycodone like skittles until the DEA stepped in and forced them to stop? My son had terminal cancer & a friend had the same cancer. Both were given the means to be as pain free as possible at the end.
After watching my son slowly die from cancer that confined him to a bed - I know I was blessed with being able to be with him during his last year but it was difficult and he was ready to go - I have a different way of looking at life.
Would rather die with dignity than having to suffer for an extended amount of time that is just prolonging the inevitable.

I feel for this family. It's obvious he was helping patients in their end stage of life. Many people forget about Hospice care if they have the appropriate diagnosis. Please consider it as soon as possible. Most people wish they had started w Hospice much sooner than later. Hospice care puts patients' comfort and quality of life at the top. It can help caregivers cope w what's happening to their loved one. It helps families balance out their changing circumstances. So many family members are concerned about their loved one becoming addicted if medications are used. Hospice can help guide their care appropriately and carefully. People should not have to die in pain or go to jail to die w dignity. It's not right when pets are given more empathetic care than your Grandma.

I have lupus but now live in Australia. I must have had it for years in the US, but now thanks to the US, my local Australian docs can no longer prescribe pain meds as they see fit.
I have history of lots of other extremely painful autoimmune diseases.
My doctors here used to be able to prescribe more than adequate pain meds of a variety of that made it possible for me to work, write, take care of my family and house and volunteer in the community. BUT...
Because of pressure by the US DEA, our federal drugs management has been FORCED to make doctors prescribe fewer pain meds per month, per three months, and six months. The US GOV shouldn't have jurisdiction over the AUSTRALIAN GOV enough to force doctors here to change their patients intake of meds.
In the US, my docs wouldn't prescribe pain meds beyond Advil and Tylenol but in such doses, my kidneys became extremely damaged.

I don’t know case much but as a hospice nurse I will share this… treating the dying is an expertise . I say that cause I’m only a registered nurse but I spent a lot of my time educating doctors… yes you heard right a nurse educating doctors. Doctors are trained to save lives so when they are put in a position where someone is dying a painful agonizing death they don’t really know what to do with that and the amount of ignorance in death and dying is astounding! Because dying just like birth is such a specialty it requires people to be educated and drs are really bad at being educated especially if it’s someone below them but once in a while you get a very emotionally intelligent and humble dr that actually wants to learn and then bam actual change and growth occurs and you have patients and families benefiting from it ! If more hospitals and facilities welcomed hospice as a specialty and were open to education and stop treating it like it’s a bad word stuff like this wouldn’t happen!

As a Hospice nurse, I would assume that you are in the practice of appropriately administering morphine, Benzo's , And other such meds, within the parameters of medical guidelines of palliative care. How many times have you administered 100 mg of morphine In one iv push? If your answer is more than 0, You have violated you're ethics as a nurse. This is about practicing within the bounds Of professional standards, and you of all people should know that there are guidelines for how to administer comfort care, and palliative care specialists as well as hospice nurses Within their team who do teach doctors how to do it. Did you ever teach a Doctor that it's appropriate to order 1000 μg of fentanyl in one shot? I sure AF hope not.

@@pmc2999 sweetie, how about you educate yourself on this case? These were NOT Hospice patients that this doctor ordered fatal doses of fentanyl on, they were ICU patients, and he took it upon himself to order life- ending opioid doses IV push WITHOUT any discussion with the patients or their families! He decided when they would die, and it was because of patient family members complaints that he was indicted and lost his license. Tell me that is justifiable. Numerous ICU RN's and Pharmacists were also fired and faced sanctions on their licenses for following his orders to push 1000 micrograms of fentanyl on opiate- naive patients. I've been prescribing pain treatment for hospital patients for over 30 years, dear, and work closely with all nurses. Palliative care specialists who have reviewed advanced directives with POA's for patients accepted into hospice for end of life care under Medicare guidelines have ability to advance and individualize doses of any comfort care treatment. NOT ICU doctors who appoint themselves as executioners without regard for whether patients have advanced directives. Maybe you should read the full details on what this intensivist (NOT palliative care doctor) did and why he lost his license before accusing others of 'not knowing anything". I've treated tens of thousands of patients, and my moral obligation is to abide by the wishes of the patient and their appointed Medical POA's, not to make up my own rules. Maybe you're the one who doesn't know anything about what you are commenting on, darling. Lots of love to you for the work that you do, and hopefully you are ethically abiding by medical and nursing practice acts of the state that licensed you. Do some homework, why dontcha??

As a nurse I had a very elderly man who had no chance of recovery. He had morphine scheduled every 4 hours not just when needed because the family did not want him to suffer. They were told , because I was there when the physician told them it could depress his breathing. They just wanted him comfortable. I checked his vitals and they were very low. The entire family, literally was sleeping on a cot, in chairs and on the floor against the wall. I woke his daughter up and advised if I gave that dose of medication he would probably peacefully pass. He did not appear in pain. She said no to hold it. By the time I could call and tell them I needed the charge nurse STAT she walked through the door, looked at me and gave a slight negative shake of her head. I knew he just passed as she saw the monitor seconds before she entered the room. Even if it was just a few seconds they had to say goodbye I’m glad they had it.

From what you describe, the medical team who ordered comfort care for your mother, including morphine, acted within the medical practice act and standards of care of their professional medical licenses under the medical board that governs them. No Clinician with any ethics would deprive a patient comfort care, However this does not include one giant fatal dose of a synthetic opioid. Morphine is completely appropriate, whereas fentanyl At 100 times the prescribable dose is not justifiable.
