Wim was born in the Netherlands, where winter is a way of life. As a kid, he felt a sudden urge to jump into a freezing-cold river. So, he did. And while most of us would immediately regret that decision and vow to never do it again…Wim went the other way and made it his profession.
In the coming years, Wim made subjecting himself to extreme feats of cold endurance his personal claim to fame. He set a world record time (two hours, 16 minutes) for a barefoot half-marathon in freezing conditions. Another for spending nearly two hours in full-body contact with a solid slab of ice. He also climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in shorts - you know, it’s causal.
Yet another world record almost didn’t make it into the books when Wim literally froze one of his corneas during a practice run for an under-ice distance swim, but after a good night’s rest, his eye healed up enough that he successfully set the record the next day.
Like I said - straight-up superhero stuff. They call him the “Iceman” for a reason.
He says that our brains have the power to guarantee us happiness, strength, and health. We can actually regulate our minds and autonomous nervous systems by breathing and being present. To help people do just that, he developed the Wim Hof Method: a natural path to an optimal state of body and mind.
Wim Hof believes humans have an inner power, which is the ability to adapt to extreme temperatures and survive within our natural environment. Over time, our lifestyles have disconnected us from our age-old survival mechanisms. As a result, we’ve lost touch with our inner power. After decades of self-exploration and groundbreaking research, Wim has created a simple but effective way to stimulate these deep physiological processes, reconnect us with ourselves, others, and nature, and realize our full potential.
Today, Wim teaches people worldwide, from celebrities and professional athletes to people of all ages, to control their body and mind and achieve extraordinary things. I’ve had him on The School of Greatness before, first on Episode #398 and then on Episode #799! I also had the incredible opportunity to go on a retreat with several other entrepreneurs with Wim Hof in Poland - it was an amazing experience, and you can read all about it right here.
I was thrilled to have him back on the show. Join me on Episode 1,043 to learn how to master your breath to live happier and defend against disease with Wim Hof - the Iceman!

This interview has confirmed my lifestyle as correct. No one would believe me that eating less gave me more energy. I eat when I am hungry. My inflammation is now zero when it used to be high. Try it (not for 1 day of course, make it your lifestyle), let me know how it goes. Does wonders for me. (yes I feel like eating french fries or a good cake sometimes, but i don't) :)

@@no1975 Yes, it is about making a radical change and getting out of your comfort zone where you feed your negative thoughts.
Cold is shocking and it is a radical change. By breathing you educate your body to remain calm.
In shocking moments where there is a radical shock (Cold as an example), your mind stops thinking about all the other things going on , it focuses on surviving and if you can remain calm , you win the war .
      Than you can control anything

This gentleman is amazing. Because of him I went walking today for two hours in 25 degree weather. Being an anemic african american woman believe me that's a big deal, trust me we don't do cold. At first my face and hands started to feel numb. I kept thinking about Wim and doing deep breathing and I started to feel warm and my hands got warm to the point I actually needed to take my gloves off. Lewis you do a fantastic job interviewing your guest. When covid first hit she told me if it had hit a couple of years ago she would have been terrified. You definitely need more zinc among other things. We're checking into possible candida infection because it can cause so many health issues, and symptoms. Doctors don't have a reliable test for candida even though they try to lead you to believe they do, and will say the test came back negative if you can get them to test you in the first place. Cold is nothing. You can tell yourself it is a perfect temperature. Believe it. And you never feel cold. I also grow up in beautiful Netherlands. I loved ice skating on small lakes, ditches when I was young. Cycling in the snow. Going to the floor and just step on your bike again and go further. Cycling in the rain. Through storm and rain. It doesn't matter. Weather is part of life. You can't change the weather. You can live with it. Everything is between your ears. I loved nature. When I was young until puberty I loved to be in the cold in a shirt only. Until others tell you to wear more clothes. I should have learned to my own body. Your body knows what is best for you. Never listen to others. Now I live in England and there it is, go inside it is raining, don't play in the snow. This is how they grow up kids in the UK. This makes people scared of the cold.
I have had anxiety. Anxiety is something that says go inside and find out why you have anxiety and put action to find a solution. Medication numbs your emotions. Emotions you need. They are good for you. Use them. I didn't know that I had anxiety until I visited for the 4th time the hospital and they told me that it is not my heart. It is anxiety. Sometimes you just need an answer what it could be. And anything that is between your ears can be solved.
I have had inflammation. One after the other. Doctors treat this with antibiotics. I had an allergic reaction and I knew this is not right. You can heal inflammation with food, not with antibiotics.
Food is the medicine, let medicine be the food.
Tell yourself that you are healthy and live like it.
It is what you tell yourself. Tell yourself good stuff.
    Much love. xx

Still I believe that our success with the holding the breathless-state time, depends very much on capability to control our thoughts, our state of mind.
When I am concerned of being able to stay breathless the supposed time, I have a very hard time to succeed.
But when I am able to detour my attention from the effort to succeed without breathing, I surprise myself; and sometimes even going longer…

I was brought up around depression and anxiety, watching your father as a young child cry at random, seemingly without reason, without purpose, dissappear for days without recollection, stints in psychological institutes and eventually an almost successful suicide attempt, I as I grew older realised I was slowly morphing into my father, depression was how I started every day, tablets that made me worse, alcohol, unhealthy eating for comfort, then a few months ago I came across Wim. My depression and anxiety are now non existent, I find love in life and appreciate everything that is beautiful in nature, I have a basic but important understanding of my biology, I eat once a day, exercise regularly, still a way to go but I can honestly say that Wim Hoff and David Sinclair (fasting guru) have changed my life for the better, for ever.

Lewis did it ever occur to you ? Your football career wasn't your path? That you were not meant for that? You had a much greater and important path and this is just the beginning for you. What a fukin ride. I bless you with massive worldwide success and recognition as a professional mindset coach speaker and teacher. Go create !

Dear Wim, Great advice to all plane passengers -- to tell a prayer before the journey begins & clap your hands when the plane lands (it's a miracle!). Show your gratitude to God & for the pilot & the dedicated crew members. Don't forget to do the breathing technique. Thanks a million

This point about willpower is interesting (30:30 ish) . I really feel that willpower isn't necessary to cultivate discipline. Clarity leads to discipline. So Wim is saying: Yes, engage in your neurotic habits all you want, but then take a cold shower. The contrast of those experiences brings clarity. Will power is forceful, whereas clarity brings about natural, lasting change. Lewis, I've been very impressed with your interviews and the questions you ask, I appreciate this a lot.

I have chills! (No pun intended🥶) When he said "Garden of Eden" I was already imagining food growing in the wild and people can just go pick it and eat it. I imagined myself planting wild strawberries. When he said Garden of Eden it blew my mind.

I used mental techniques to get me through US Army Ranger School in the 80s to overcome Sleep and food deprivation (awake 3 days on one meal a day) in extreme environmental and physical conditions and dealing with a lot of pain! I too found my purpose: to stay healthy and heal others whenever possible!
Wim Hof techniques help. Keep the research going. Keep up the good work! ...Love everything good and heal others!
