My dad had a similar story, joined the Navy at 17 in 1943 and served in the Pacific theater. This really hits home for me because the way he tells it at 93 is so similar to how my dad told it in his 90's... the details fade with age but the overall picture is still there. These were great men, the greatest generation indeed. I remember when the towers fell on Sep. 11 how my dad (76 at the time) drove down to Mayport Naval Station and asked if he could re-enlist. My father passed away away in 2020 wondering how this generation had lost that sense of duty and love of country. For him it was a given.

Insurance is like the lottery. Most people who pay in wont get their money back, but the people who really fck up will get more than they paid in. The lottery needs to pull in more money than it gives out, only has a few winners. Insurance companies need to take in more money than they give out, and not all people get back what they pay in. It's just how math works.

I’m not in the Navy but I was aboard one of their ships for 10 months and there was numerous places we went in that period of time. He was aboard for nearly 3 years which means there’s probably little he hadn’t seen. These days guys are flown home for a break. He's saying it correctly in the context, meaning no leave to return home. He left for the fight and didn't see home for years. He's old and not as fast as he was, but still makes perfect sense in context.

I was still in the Army when fronted up to the court to pay that old fine ... the Judge nailed me for the state fees and court costs, which was a lot of money for a married GI with one child ... Welcome home (?) ... (I wish the Judge asked which battleship) I was in EVERY battle. Lets, see what was the worst one....oh right, being a crewman on a battleship, you would think one of the plethora of naval battles that happened between 1943-45 would be one I name, but no, I will name a famous land battle where I was just getting a tan while lobbing shells at an island with no risk to myself. On top of that I will remind you we lost more marines there than the battle of the bulge where there were...ya know, zero marines...so basically any battle a single marine died would have lost more marines than the battle of the bulge. And for the record...more Americans died in the battle of the bulge than Iwo.

I'm a child of that generation, and I love them, but I have to say that they were really a bunch of scared goose-steppers. Can't fault them: first they got hit by the Depression, then World War 2. After all that, they were just eager to obey the rules and follow whatever rules the corporations made for them. No worse than any other generation, but it's probably ridiculous to think in terms of whole generations anyhow.
