Disposable PowerBank (One Time Single Use Charger) - This will trigger the ecologists!

  • In this video I take a look at an ecological disaster - a DISPOSABLE powerbank. It's a power bank you use just once to charge your phone and then you trash it. Yes, a plastic box with a battery and a circuitboard trashed after single use. On the top of it, the capacity is very low and it gives my phone only 22% charge! I would have to use 5 such chargers to charge my smartphone fully. This one costs $ 2.20, so just one full charge would cost me $ 11! That's just awesome. It seems that the battery inside is rechargeable, but the powerbank is designed as a one time device just to make more money, with absolutely no respect for the environment.
    This one has a universal plug that fits both iPhones and micro USB phones (Android). It says the capacity is 1000 mAh, but a lot is being lost in the converters. It gives my 2600 mAh phone battery a 22% more charge, which is 572 mAh only.
    Trying to recharge it and measuring the capacity of the cell here:

      Dawello ! Because it's a one use battery that charges your phone once? There's a difference between something that you immediately throw out and something that you keep for years. I own a lithium power bank I'm not stupid. But a >>ONE USE

      CloudPixel but those topically aren't made from lithium which is highly toxic but also highly useful and important. It is not very abundant compared to other metals either. Plus here you are also wasting plastic and a charge circuit. These and those lithium AA batteries are a waste of a resource that needs to be conserved for more important tasks such as battery banks that can be used hundreds of times over.

  • @MrOpenGL
    @MrOpenGL 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I expected at least a primary lithium-manganese battery in it (the kind used in EPIRBs and alarm systems) that has a much higher energy density and more importantly, a 10 year shelf life. This "thing" will run flat on its own in less than a year, then when you REALLY need it (say you are hiking in the Alps, the phone is dead since a long time and you get injured) it won't work...
    It will also perform extremely poorly in cold weather, which again is when you really need the most, and is not waterproof at all...
    A real emergency charger that I designed to keep in the survival raft of my boat has three SAFT Li-MnO2 5Ah batteries in series giving 9V, then 2x LM7805 regulators giving two separate and independent outputs (for redundancy, and the heat generated by the linear regulators is mostly dissipated outside, but also helps to heat the battery which improves output in extremely cold weather), the power from the batteries to the regulators is switched via a reed switch so there are no contacts to be oxidised, and the output is via two XT60 connectors that have been chosen so that if the device gets submerged in sea water, the corrosion is very slow because the terminals are very thick, whereas if you drop a micro usb cable in sea water in less than 10 minutes it's ruined forever.
    The whole thing is completely potted and then sealed in two layers of plastic bag with each having a bit of silica-gel to keep moisture down, and included are four sets of XT60 to Microusb, usb,usb type C and lightning cables, and a fifth cable that is pre-stripped so you can connect whatever you want to it.
    Of course this didn't cost 2$, it costed 70€, but if you want to market something towards emergency use, it has to be bulletproof because you are not going to use it when it's sunny, temperate, and dry, but rather when it's freezing cold, wet everywhere and it's raining or snowing :-)

    They're aimed at the events market where festival-goers can purchase a cheap battery top up without the hassle of lugging around their own charging equipment that could get damaged or stolen. Market trends have shown that people arriving by public transport don't want to carry anything during the journey, even tents are disposable these days and many just abandon their tents and don't bother taking it home.

    This if course is not for charging the phone fully. It is that you keep it unopened and keep it for an emergency so that you can make a critical call if your battery is empty. It is clearly marked as an emergency charger. Since you keep it unopened, you know it is fully (or close it it) charged. It can be a life saving device.

      But it's still using a lithium battery so it'll self discharge and go flat pretty quickly. It'd be safer to have a dedicated emergency power bank that you top up and test every 6 months to a year or so

      @mukeshgoyal 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Krunal Pandya he says final output is 500mah. So for 1 full charge u have to spend 2.2x6=13.2 $
      13.2 $ x 65= 850 rs. Aprx
      Thats for 1 time charge..
      Nd we can buy made in India 13000mah powerbank with this amt money with 1 yr Warranty. That will give a 3000mah phone atleast 3 full charge..

      I need to replace it twice in two year time. Nd moreover I got 2 amp charger with my mobile (xiaomi) but powerbank's 2amp just doesn't work.. After getting it repair in 2 3weeks I don't know how it start malfunctioning nd I have to charge with 1 amp.
      Other disadvantages is u can't charge 2 device simultaneously..

    Some of the disposable chargers are not disposable at all, as long as the manner it is charged are as environment friendly or as near its equivalence, it can be recharged back. Read the instructions and compare, don't go beyond the limit from the input charge and the output. Electronics 101.

    This has such a bad price-performance ratio. 2 dollars for 1000mAh battery and no charging circuit. For 30 dollars you can get a 20000mAh powerbank that you can recharge a few hundred to thousand times. So the price-performance ratio of a 30 dollar powerbank is hundreds to thousands of times better. I don't understand the point of this product.

      @imnotbeluga007 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It can be useful, BUT they're using a rechargeable battery in a disposable product.
      The same problem is with disposable vape pens. They have a lithium battery (high energy density), but either it's big and not user rechargeable, or small and user rechargeable. The vape juice is not refillable, which is the primary reason why it's disposable.
