  • We used t-slot aluminum extrusions to make a modular rolling 3D printer cart! Well, and CNC cart! We’ll just call it our digital fabrication cart :)

    This rolling 3D printer and CNC cart is soooo much better than our old set up. We love that it’s made from t-slot aluminum extrusions because we will inevitable grow our collection and this makes it a flexible / modular cart that we can add onto. In addition we do plan on turning this into an enclosure and adding additional organization for materials like filament and resin. It’s really sturdy and easily held the weight of two of us rolling around on it, which makes us feel good about it housing our machines. Plus it’s handy that we can roll it around if we need to move it. Using Vention was really handy because we could design our piece in their free CAD software and order exactly what we needed for our exact design. Of course, we ended up realizing a few extra brackets we needed as we went and 3D printed some custom ones that locked into the aluminum extrusions. We also added our own touch to the cart in the form of wood shelves. We split the two wider shelves into two parts to maintain the modularity (if we need to make one side taller, we don’t have to cut our shelf in half). Overall, we think this is going to be a great system for 3d printer storage and cnc storage!

    It's great how so many "challenges" can be solved at home with a 3d printer. Great idea for the brackets! That cart has so many possibilities and flexibility for the future.

      Mega late to the party here, but what are the chances you know of a half decent T-slot supplier in Canada? I've actually got plans for an enclosed "smart" 3D printer enclosure with a touch screen controller which would have vents that regulate temperature accordingly via air intake, filtration for the exhaust, and have a top feed of spools.

    So...I came across your cat wheel video by chance and started watching your other DIY videos. Saw the desk one and was like, "man, t molding would be perfect to make a cart for my 3d printer." Started just looking up DIYs for 3d printer carts on Google and it led me right back to your channel. Glad there's a website you can use to design a frame.

    My OCD is forcing me to beg you to rotate the 2x4 blocking 90 degrees. Dimensional lumber is designed to bear weight most efficiently and effectively when oriented vertically instead of horizontally. Looking at the beam in section, the top fibers are in compression and the bottom fibers are in tension. Maximizing the distance between these two extremes allows the material to perform most effectively. With it horizontal you may get sagging over time from the weight of your equipment. Vertical and you’ll never exceed its capacity.
    Also, my name is Evan, too.

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      We'll definitely keep that in mind! Honestly, after we mounted the plywood to the brackets, it seemed like the 2x4s were just gravy (it was reeeeally sturdy). If we need to change their orientation down the line it'll be easy peasy. Also, hi other Evan!

      Ah that stinks about shipping! Yeah extrusions are soooo nice to build modular things with though!

      @GeneJordan 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John Made it If you don't need such sturdy aluminum extrusion, you could design it with a smaller size and save some money. They "over-built" their cart with oversized extrusion. Especially if you reinforce it with plywood shelves and wood 2x4's across the bottom.

    • @JohnMadeit
      @JohnMadeit 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gene Jordan yea I realised later that the extrusion E&K used was 45x45mm and I think the standard size one are 20x20mm (like on the xcarve CNC) which are good enough for most applications I think. Thanks for tip 👍

    I guess the gear would catch dust in an open rig plus it'd make annoying noise if someone try to take a nap !
    If you upgraded to surround it with Glass covers or Clear polyethylene sheets ,it would make less noise and make it less prone to dust :)
    Yet I Still love it, simple and neat

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's the plan for the next upgrade! We haven't had too many issues with dust the past couple years of printing in the open but noise is definitely an issue

    • @EvanAndKatelyn

      We actually used 45mm (about 1.77") and it's reeeeeally strong. Should have no problem holding the printer weight 👍

    Hey this is a bit of a random comment but after watching a few of your videos I was wondering, how do you guys organize all the scraps that get cut off/go to waste when your projects are done? Besides the wood pieces are any of the stuff you make from resin or any non-wood materials recyclable if you happen to mess up? I'd love to see that as a video or as part of a podcast :)

      Haha we're still figuring it out! Right now we keep too much and it's kinda overflowing

  • @Covenant-R
    @Covenant-R 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    So, how come you made the center vertical struts full length instead of go with full length horizontal and have the vertical lower and top mid supports shorter and thus also modular to move sideways. Or do you forsee a possible future expansion in the vertical direction more than the horizontal ?

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We did the struts full length because we wanted them to connect the two pieces of plywood that the two wider shelves are made of. Not sure if it's the best way, but it's easily changeable 🙂👍

    • @Covenant-R
      @Covenant-R 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, also, I guess not having the center vertical struts full length would necessitate having angle bracket's on the topside and hence more cutouts in the shelves for those, instead only on the bottom side, something I didn't think of until I looked closely. Interesting modular set, and definitely something I'm going to look at for a few things in the future.

  • @onjofilms
    @onjofilms 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice tip. Now here's one for you. Most of the time, using a 2x3 works where a 2x4 would, is less bulky, a buck cheaper per stick, and usually just as strong for projects. 2x4's are excessive a lot of times. And, you're saving the earth a little bit.

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pricing wise they are pretty similar, but the main difference is the software that lets you design and get the parts you need easily and fast. The cost can add up for sure - we did a few designs and worked the cost down little by little each time. Hope that helps!
