    More thoughts on the project; all in all, despite the challenges we faced (or maybe because of the challenges!) we learned a ton on this project. First and foremost, due to lots of comments, we learned that succulents are probably not the best plants to put in our self watering planter (we actually had one die, but one lived and did so well it outgrew it!)
    We love the look of a concrete planter, and we were able to get some really interesting curves because of the 3D printed mold we made, though you could definitely accomplish the same functionality just doing a mold out of wood or MDF if you don't have a 3D printer, which is a more DIY friendly option.
    Overall, we love that this planter is self watering, we love the modern design, we love concrete as a material, and we love what we learned along the way.

    These specific plants used would die anyway because succulents don't need constant access to water. Soil for succulents should be completely dry between waterings or they will drown from too much water or their roots will rot! Still pretty planters though

    Hi, I know concrete is "IN" actually.
    1)But concrete is verry bad for plants. So better you take some Ceramic casting Material. Some plants will die if the roots touch the concrete.It exist in all colors, because you can ad some colourpowder to it, so it will look like concrete.Weight is similar..
    2) I am in Silicon casting (Figure Kit Builder & producer) there a lot of possibillitys to demould your master. Simply use Vaseline, or a spray (Teflon, etc) this will prevent that the silicon will adere/glue to your master. andd you can easyly deemould it.
    3) great Video - I like it
    4) sorry for my english - just imagine it in verry well written English ;-)

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +89

      1) Thanks for the helpful input! We actually want to try ceramic casting soon, and also try plaster too!
      2) I thought vaseline could damage some types of molds, but I'll see if its compatible with Oomoo 30. We usually use Mann 200 but unfortunately forgot to use it this time.
      3) YAY, appreciate that :)
      4) haha, it's great, had no trouble understanding it!

      Tell all of the crabgrass, grass and weeds not to grow between the cracks of my cement pavers that I made out of cement bc it's bad for them. It doesn't affect them one bit :( ....or is this only for 'house plants'? Maybe houseplants are more delicate? I didn't know that there even was a ceramic casting material. Tfs!

    a tip for people hoping to have houseplants in self-watering planters: make sure they're in sunny spots that get good air-circulation. Self-watering pots are great IF the water doesn't get stagnant, so you have to make sure they're in an area where they will actually dry out a bit. Otherwise you can end up with mold. I found this out the hard way. Just as a general rule, plants like decent amounts of water moving through the system they're in but would rather take low water than standing water. And remember to use a good medium that absorbs and holds onto water well but has good pore space between the grains to allow air in, because plants actually breathe oxygen in through their roots and if the roots drown, they stop functioning and your plants will paradoxically stop being able to take up water even if it's all around them

    There's actually water soluble 3D printing filament out there ... that may have been easier to remove from the silicone mold. Also, nice video. It's refreshing to see, that not all projects go perfectly (as on many other YT-channels). I often find the trail and error part most interesting.

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yeah, I've really been wanting to get my hands on some of that!! Maybe for the next one 🙂 also, great you like projects that don't go perfectly, stick around here because we're still learning... so that stuff is inevitable lol 😋

      Aww thanks so much Gavin! Appreciate that 😀

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      PVA filament, that is difficult to sand because it just evades and then jumps back into shape, and can't really be stored. Well maybe there is a way to store it, like in cat litter.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      BTW, i suggest considering relief angles and using PVA spray release. What i mean by relief angles, if you look, you'll never find an injection moulded part where all walls are exactly vertical! Well outer walls may be, with more than 2 mold parts, but inner walls never are. They are always sloped by just a tiny fraction of a degree. Because else the part would get stuck in the steel mould and will never release. Now of course it will release from silicone, but it may still be helpful to design better releasability into your parts. Nobody is gonna know if the inside wall is slightly sloped, but the plug will have such a much easier time coming out.

      @@EvanAndKatelyn orchids actually more or less water themselves, just put them in a room with moist air and light without direct sunlight and they'll do the rest themselves😂👍 I have mine in the bathroom so they just water themselves whenever I take a shower, but the kitchen or a washing room will work just fine too👍 They love to be ignored and do best when they don't get "pampered"(over watered or too much sun).

    You should invest in a vacuum chamber to get all the ar bubbles in the silicone mixture before making it into a mould

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Oh yeah we've had our eye on them for a while. Still not sure what size to get but we're narrowing down on a pretty modular system :) thanks for the input!

    • @Hellsong89
      @Hellsong89 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just get vacuum pump and some steel pressure cooker. Make connection for the pump and your essentially done. Cooker has sturdy walls and its not like you are even able to make such a vacuum that would cause a issue. If you want to see inside, get peace of polycarbonate, make hole, bolt the window in place and dont forget to seal it.
      Normal cooking pot would do(or any other similar container), but creating seal is bit harder. Its not impossible, for instance get peace of tractor inner wheel tube, make a seal ring, glue it into peace of metal or sealed wood and then build some kind of fasteners to help with initial vacuum creation.

    Even though that second batch didn't look like it mixed well, it seems to have worked. Good video and cool project! Do the burnt ends prevent any wicking?

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah the second mold actually came out really solid! Thankfully smoothon makes their stuff pretty forgiving lol. So far it seems to work well 😀 we filled the reservoir and let it sit for a few hours (soaking up water) then dumped the reservoir out, then waited another hour to see if the wick would release water... And it did! Way more than we thought. So it seems like it's able to soak up water and transport it 😁

    guys realy a cactus. a cactus does not need that much water

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Siem Hendrikx you'd be surprised at how many cacti we have killed... but the way thus works is the plant takes water from the reservoir (via the wick) as it needs it, so you full the reservoir once and the plant will take what it needs as it goes

    • @fryblock
      @fryblock 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Siem Hendrikx I thought the exact same thing. And it isn't the plant taking the water from the reservoirs, it's the soil, so it can still get overwatered. Good project for other plants. Also, cacti usually die from overwatering and not enough light indoors.

    • @petrescuework-difficultcas6581
      @petrescuework-difficultcas6581 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      fryfold Exactly. The soil takes new water as it dries out. That means the soil is consrantly moist. Aloes are succulents and easily die when being too moist. I own about 200 succulents and water them every 4 to 6 weeks. In between they always have to dry out completely.
