We wanted to make metal 3D printed knife scales but most of the work is done in the designing and prototyping for a project like this. We like to walk you through the ups, downs, and problem solving parts of making this knife handle because that’s where the “meat” really is - once all the testing is done, you just order it and the metal print arrives and you hope it works!
This was our first time working on a knife project and it was so fun. The knife kit was easy to put together and we now have so many ideas of different designs for the knife scales we could do. Two of my favorite channels collide.
3D metal printers are just big boxes filled with lots and lots of very tiny blacksmiths.

When photographing objects to use as a "plan" in software use a zoom lens and stand way back to avoid parallax distortion which may have contributed to your inaccuracy in the prints. This is a technique we use in the 3d world when getting reference images for game and sfx modelling assets.

We are still working with Shapeways to work the bugs out of the customizable version. Should be customizable soon! Also right now it definitely feels like sleep is not gonna happen any time soon haha

After having a microchip implanted on my spine last year to help block pain from my neuropathy (nerves in feet dying off), my 3 sons, because of all my cheesey-bad, dad-jokes, had a long discussion as to whether I'd be cyborg or bionic, transformer, yadda, yadda, yadda. I also found you via Alec Steele. Loved that vid & this one too! WTG you two, it looks like a helluva time you're having. Ironically, I got a throttle valve clip from Shapeways back in Feb. I can't speak highly enough of them & their work. It fit perfectly & saved a lot of hassle, time & money. Very good company to deal with.

Threaded inserts are really easy to fit in using a soldering iron and they add a lot of strength to 3D prints with screws. I recommend them.
Do they make them this small? We've used them before for larger screws 👍

this is my first time watching your videos as I am a sub of Alec's but in Alec's video I got the impression that you all printed the metal knife sides...maybe I need to go back and re-watch Alec's video as I was really looking forward to seeing something amazing.
Hey! We would have LOVED to have printed them ourselves but the machines are way out of consumer price range (think $100,000!!) so this was more about the prototyping and designing.

Saw you two on Alec steele. So i came to check out the other two thirds of this build. You two are so very smiley! Love it! Keep up the good work, sometimes you need to try again that's ok. But eventually you get what ya want. Sick knife! And as a former pirate ( historical reenactor ) i have to say that's a knife i would be proud to own. But it would not fit in with the garb.
