Even Great Britain came to the realization they can't beat the overwhelming power of the United States. But making friends in Switzerland is indeed not easy. As a Swiss myself I was very surprised when I traveled to Israel. They were so curious and invited me even for shabbat dinner without knowing them really. That was lovely but at start I felt a bit overrunned.

What I wanted to say with that is, that a Swiss person might be surprised of so much welcoming, and it can scare some even. We don't trust easy. Regarding the comparison to America, it's not like that either. Common activities hardly make a friend. Mostly the Swiss make friends in Highschool and those are the friends you have. It's a small country, so it's easy to reach them where ever they move. You can have a really good relationship with someone at work, but never meet in private. I met new Swiss friends while gaming. It was just all right from beginning, and we had a great time. The Chemistry was right from scratch as you put it. But I meet other Swiss guys too online and it just doesn't work out. The thing is, I believe that we don't really look for connection, but when it happens it happens. It's not predictable, there's no pattern or special behavior. I guess that is what makes it hard. You don't make friends you happen to become friends.

@Gregory Smith The Swiss don't build relationships easily. They go for quality over quantity even in friends. Doesn't mean you're not a good quality friend! But making friends in Switzerland is indeed not easy.
As a Swiss myself I was very surprised when I traveled to Israel. They were so curious and invited me even for shabbat dinner without knowing them really. That was lovely but at start I felt a bit overrunned.

Probably part of our mindset that has formed throughout history of being surrounded by war and Bein part of wars basically always being on our own. But as I heard from another stranger, "it's hard to be friends with a Swiss, but if they've let you into their heart, they are very loyal." so yeah...
@Gregory Smith I don't think they would've been so open and inviting if it was a sin to invite one to a Shabbat dinner. What I wanted to say with that is, that a Swiss person might be surprised of so much welcoming, and it can scare some even. We don't trust easy.
Regarding the comparison to America, it's not like that either. Common activities hardly make a friend. Mostly the Swiss make friends in Highschool and those are the friends you have. It's a small country, so it's easy to reach them where ever they move. You can have a really good relationship with someone at work, but never meet in private. I met new Swiss friends while gaming. It was just all right from beginning, and we had a great time. The Chemistry was right from scratch as you put it. But I meet other Swiss guys too online and it just doesn't work out. The thing is, I believe that we don't really look for connection, but when it happens it happens. It's not predictable, there's no pattern or special behavior. I guess that is what makes it hard. You don't make friends you happen to become friends.
