Watching Fences was like watching the first 28 years of my life in 2 hours & 19 minutes. My grandfather and two uncles acted just like Troy. Always playing the game of no matter what I do, they’d always have to bring me down to a level lower than them so they could be feel superior. Constantly changing the rules to make sure I never win became a source of contention and I could never win. It didn’t stop until my grandfather died in 2013. After that, I stopped talking to all my extended family members. My uncle tried to reconcile with my mom and sister after his puta wife had kicked him out. They did but I refused to see or talk to him. I felt insulted and hurt that my mom invited him back into the house after he hit her years before. Not to mention all abuse he put me through. I was relieved when he and my grandpa died. Sad thing for a man to admit but it’s true. Treat me like shit and I will not mourn or miss you, not one bit.
wow all these years of listening from spill to DT I never heard of Korey being an extra in a Denzel movie. Maybe I missed it along the way, but that's really cool. First Korey animated space jam, now he acted right next to Denzel Washington, the surprises never end.
KaijiSan4 Yeah, I know :) Hey, whoever keeps changing the wikipedia page of Space Jam to have Korey as producer/director, you need to go to the Courage Under Fire page an write that he was Denzel's acting coach :D
I forgot Korey was in Courage Under Fire haha that's awesome. I was in The Great Debaters (directed by Denzel Washington), you got more screen time than me and I was there for 3 days in the heat.
i'm not black, but my dad has the same chip on his shoulder. yes, there is a real aspect to poverty; there are real things outside of your control. but there is also a very powerful psychological aspect to poverty, as well; there are things you _feel_ are outside of your control. but they're really just a filter, a conditioning, a learned behavior
Fuck color bro, when you think about whether old school , gangster , poor rich , middle there’s literally the same exact kind in every single race . . We are all the same. Blessings to you 🙏🏾
This movie helps people unpack a lot of shit and it has such a wonderful core message, that may not be all too uplifting or what have you but it's so important: You are not the sins of the past, you are not the mistakes that your parents made and their families made with them. You always have the ability to break the cycle and you should. You can.
yeah, he actually mentioned it a few shows ago, although I first learnt about it during his Spill days. However, it seems like he was still in touch or knew of his biological parents (I don't think he has ever gone into great detail about it). Based on him dropping a few pieces of information about his personal past here and there over the years, I take that it must have not been the greatest of childhoods for him. It seems like he has gotten over a lot of those things so that's good to see. Oh, and he murdered a turtle when he was a kid.
Fantastic review and I really loved the insight you guys were able to provide since you can relate so well to the story. Long live DT, happy holidays and all the best for the new years. Love from Switzerland.
Most of the few reviews I've read/seen for Fences have been focused on either the acting (which is phenomenal) or that the movie isn't very cinematic/is too stagey (somewhat true), but it's great to see a review from people who really connected with the characters and the emotions and the ideas, which is what I think is the true strength of the film (along with the acting). I'm La La Land all the way for the Oscars (better than sex! almost), but Fences packs a hell of a punch. I've really been enjoying your channel lately! Thanks!
Man the trailer for this Movie gave me feelings way too close to home. My father was just like him and I hated him through most of childhood and teenage years. Now that I'm a young adult, I've learned to understand more but man it felt just like it.
I think he purposely kept it hidden since the Spill days but a few shows ago (don't asked me which one), it either slipped out of him or got ratted out by Sammy. I guess he just went 'fuck it' and he is not as worry about keeping it under wraps anymore.
My dad wasnt a drunk. He did show affection towards us as kids and would vocally support us but his anger and temperament among other things were TERRIFYING!! Thankfully he’s not that guy anymore.
Hahaha poor Will. No but I dont mean its a bad thing though, and this review gave me high hopes for this film. Denzel is the real deal. Criminally under-appreciated as far as I'm concerned.
Damn I agree with Goodwin 100%. I call it a Stockholm syndrome epilogue and that magical scene is definitely unforgivable. I don't know what to think when people hate on Passengers because of its ethical issue, but they are o.k. with this "Let's make a scum a hero" ending. The performance and everything else are great except maybe the child actress. Her performance seems forced and rushed to me. Actually, the entire epilogue feels very forced to me, so yeah... I'd say it's a very great film with a disappointing payoff.
I refused to see Fences, even when I bought the DVD, because it would trigger. I just watched this and it is one of Denzel Washington's most seminal work and performance. Viola Davis got her dignity back as Rose. The was one of her finest acting. Fences 10/10, excellent and not that Tyler Perry horseshit.
But the truth is, if you really know about the Negro Baseball League, Jackie Robinson was MEDIOCRE compared to the top athletes who never had a chance before the baseball was desegregated.
Dwight was just a straight up dick who was jealous of Toby or whatever Dicaprio's role was. Troy I'd say was more unhappy and wanted the best for his son Corey even if his intentions were delivered poorley
I predict some Oscar nominations. Maybe not best picture but best actor... Although what would be best this year? Other then Hell or High Water. Okay, maybe Loving and Moonlight. This looks to have several stand out performances.
"this is probably one of the only movies I didn't feel like any of the actors were weak"- Corey Did you watch moonlight? personally felt like the entire cast had fantastic performances. Bringing to my next point, would love for you guys to review for moonlight. I personally liked it even better on my second viewing.
Great review guys. And just to let you know, you don't have to have grown up in a black family for this movie to hit you. I'm white and grew up in rural California but I had a father just like this. Martin, I feel your pain.
My father stole everything from my mothers home, and left her homeless while she gave birth to me in the hospital. I was raised homeless for seven years. I grew up either at my grandparents farm, or living in women shelters till my mom could afford an apartment. Troy's character drew so much anger out of me reminding me of my deadbeat biological father, i had to stop the film several times to take a breather. This movie got me fucked up and mad as fuck.
lulu d They Reviewed it back in Oct 19 on the Movie Review Extravaganza podcast at 1hr 20 min mark.. It's on there Main website, Sammy Gonzales OR Will are the ones who edit it and put it on TH-cam. The review is a two part since Korey Coleman was the only one who seen it and given it a Better Than Sex rating. Martin and Korey G. reviewed it in another podcast afterwards, I didn't remember which though.
Ethan Hawke should have pulled a Kirk Lazarus and play the son in this movie. Would it have ruined the film? Most likely. Would it have been offensive? Certainly. However, don't tell me you wouldn't have loved to see Korey C.'s reaction to that and have him review the film.

It's wild to me how little insight you guys have with Troy's character. Did you listen to the dialogue at all? Based on your comments, it doesn't appear you did. Rose breaks it down best when talking to Corey that Troy was trying to spare him from 'his' life. He's like a lot of folks who've gone through bad times that can't see things have gotten better. Troy was a great baseball player. He was just too old when the league opened up. He wanted both his sons to be all that he wasn't, but he wanted them to be mentally tough like he was.
Man, watching this makes me feel so happy to have been raised by the white half of my family, because as EVERYONE knows, with white people it's all sunshine and roses. Especially here in good ol' Arkansas! what i'm saying is that my life growing up was basically a pretty enjoyable episode of roseanne, but if she had been single and had 2 black sons Now, if this had been A Raisin in the Sun, I would be feeling uncomfortable, because my brother is basically Walter from that, and it isn't great.

this piece really had Martin reliving some real shit. can't hate on him though. i have a lighter version of this with my dad. it totally sucks
Trama passed from generations
Viola brought it. I applauded her entire performance.
She stole it.
Viola Davis Also Gave A Great Performance In “The Woman King” (2022)!
"Straighten up, goddammit!!! Only then will you begin to understand the true power of the darkside."
Best scene never.
I'm sorry Martin, you deserved better.
jschritz agreed :( don't even know him and I love him, hate that he went through shit

Man, you're just like Jennette McCurdy. I'm sorry what you went through.
wow all these years of listening from spill to DT I never heard of Korey being an extra in a Denzel movie. Maybe I missed it along the way, but that's really cool. First Korey animated space jam, now he acted right next to Denzel Washington, the surprises never end.
How funny would it have been if it was his shadow the only thing that appeared in the movie at the end?
That would be pretty great and consistent with his past Hollywood contributions, as Korey's input on space jam was drawing Tweety's shadow.
KaijiSan4 Yeah, I know :) Hey, whoever keeps changing the wikipedia page of Space Jam to have Korey as producer/director, you need to go to the Courage Under Fire page an write that he was Denzel's acting coach :D
Same here I started listening to all the podcasts in 2009 and never knew that until today.
Now I have to rewatch Courage under fire to look for Korey.
Who's going to fuck around with Wikipedia and imdb to give him top billing?
rmeddy1
Me too lol! Just to see Korey
Go look at it now.
I forgot Korey was in Courage Under Fire haha that's awesome. I was in The Great Debaters (directed by Denzel Washington), you got more screen time than me and I was there for 3 days in the heat.
Yeah, me too. I think this was the first time it has been mentioned in DT because I remember him first talking about it during the Spill days.
@@yakuza01 Who'd you guys play as? That's dope
"He shadowed my father"-Martin
Lol!
19:35 "Martin grows a white beard"
2 years later, Martin grows a white beard.....he shaved it though.
Every now and then Martin drops little personal things like he's married and has kids and I'm always shocked lol
Jean Wilson HAS KIDS?!?!?!?
Yeah same his daughter was on a show I was surprised at first
i'm not black, but my dad has the same chip on his shoulder. yes, there is a real aspect to poverty; there are real things outside of your control. but there is also a very powerful psychological aspect to poverty, as well; there are things you _feel_ are outside of your control. but they're really just a filter, a conditioning, a learned behavior

people are surprised martins married? it was a bigger shock finding out he was adopted
til_thasmokeclearz He's adopted?!

til_thasmokeclearz So he's old, married and adopted. Now I've heard everything.........
And has kids......and murdered a turtle when he was young.......
Crimson Rain and likes Spiderman 3 better than spider man 2
I love all your reviews, the way you guys do it is unlike any other reviewers. Keep doing what you do
Fantastic review and I really loved the insight you guys were able to provide since you can relate so well to the story. Long live DT, happy holidays and all the best for the new years. Love from Switzerland.
I feel you. I told my parents they should divorce and meant it.

Troy and Bobo felt EXACTLY like Korey and Martin. It was fuckin insane.
Man, you guys are the effing best
Damn, now I really need to see this. Great review. This channel is becoming my fav for reviews.
me too
This movie is going to bring back so many unsettled memories in my childhood. I dunno if I can watch it.
worth watching
Wait... I'm sorry.. I DIDN'T KNOW MARTIN WAS MARRIED! :D
I had the same reaction! Martin the great cat daddy is married?!?!?
Julius Jud He has implied he was for years, and he mentioned it directly once last year.
BJ Johnson I've only been watching what's been on YT and what was on the Old Site, so I guess I missed it. Good for him!
I didnt either
You can watch Fences here twitter.com/cb19dd22bba67af5a/status/822756083210981376
Man the trailer for this Movie gave me feelings way too close to home. My father was just like him and I hated him through most of childhood and teenage years. Now that I'm a young adult, I've learned to understand more but man it felt just like it.
This movie sounds like a documentary for my Uncle Mac, lol. He was highly skilled at crushing your dreams, he'd stomp on your hopes like no other..
Above Beyond its crazy how much some of Denzel's behaviour reminded me of my father.
fangal12 man I watched the movie, it was really good- but, Denzel was a complete asshole towards his son. Lol.
The look on the kids face in the play for some reason looks hilarious at 345
I told my parents to get a divorce too. They didn't listen.
MARTIN IS MARRIED!?!?!
umm yeah
Yep
+Von The Stampede This is news.
I think he purposely kept it hidden since the Spill days but a few shows ago (don't asked me which one), it either slipped out of him or got ratted out by Sammy. I guess he just went 'fuck it' and he is not as worry about keeping it under wraps anymore.
yakuza01 Ray let it slip.
Lots of ~ACTING~ in this movie
Korey didn't land on Plymouth Rock, Plymouth Rock landed on Korey!
I'm expecting atleast 2 Training Day references in this Review.
1
"That's some Darth Vader shit right there!" lol
movie was great for me... cant lie.. i had a couple tears especially towards denzels brother in the movie.
it's amazing how some people don't know how to appreciate the end scene. it was beautiful
My dad wasnt a drunk. He did show affection towards us as kids and would vocally support us but his anger and temperament among other things were TERRIFYING!! Thankfully he’s not that guy anymore.
Now I want a Korey Coleman director's cut of "Courage Under Fire."
Mrgokujr2012 Korey Under Fire
you better put a sir at the end of that bark! 😂😂😂😂😂
Denzel pushing hard for that Oscar.
At least not as blatant as Will.
Hahaha poor Will. No but I dont mean its a bad thing though, and this review gave me high hopes for this film. Denzel is the real deal. Criminally under-appreciated as far as I'm concerned.
Underappreciated?! He has 2 freaking Oscars and 3 Golden globes. Get outta here with your 'underappreciated'.
Lol
Right. So Denzel has the exact same number (of Oscars) as Hillary Swank? Hillary Swank? Okay son, you win :)
A CARBON COPY reference???? DAMN!
Dang Korey looks the same as he did in 1996
Damn I agree with Goodwin 100%. I call it a Stockholm syndrome epilogue and that magical scene is definitely unforgivable.

Wait a second, is Martin really married?
I remember reading the play in my high school English class. That epilogue was weird then too.
Yes! I finally found your channel. I need to watch Fences. I see NO reviews for Stranger Things! What's up guys. You need to get on this one NOW.
I refused to see Fences, even when I bought the DVD, because it would trigger.
I just watched this and it is one of Denzel Washington's most seminal work and performance.

That is why they allowed Jackie only they wanted the basic Negro so they could never feel a black person was winning over
Troy's character reminded me of the character Dwight from This Boy's Life, just more depth & layered
Dwight was just a straight up dick who was jealous of Toby or whatever Dicaprio's role was. Troy I'd say was more unhappy and wanted the best for his son Corey even if his intentions were delivered poorley
Very good, one of my favorite films all time
I predict some Oscar nominations. Maybe not best picture but best actor... Although what would be best this year?
Other then Hell or High Water. Okay, maybe Loving and Moonlight. This looks to have several stand out performances.
Recently watched it for the first time, glad I'm not the only one who thought of Korey and Martin in the opening.
corey should say my man alot more XD
Is Korey from Killeen?!
Fun Fact: Denzels first broadway show was funded by the same gangster who funded Deathrow. Harry O.
James earl Jones is known for the Great White Hope
Damn...what a review...thanx guys
Aww I was hoping for a John Wick 2 trailer reaction. New video though so I can't complain love DT !
Wesley Crawford I think they did already. Check their past videos.
"this is probably one of the only movies I didn't feel like any of the actors were weak"- Corey
Did you watch moonlight? personally felt like the entire cast had fantastic performances.
Bringing to my next point, would love for you guys to review for moonlight. I personally liked it even better on my second viewing.
They already did.
not on TH-cam at least
Corey reviewed it (kinda), he gave it better than sex
Teenage Kevin kind of sucked
Martin does have a white beard now.
I believe the other actors in the film (except for the younger son,) also appeared in the stage version with the two leads.
Still one among the best movie to this date.👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Great review guys. And just to let you know, you don't have to have grown up in a black family for this movie to hit you. I'm white and grew up in rural California but I had a father just like this. Martin, I feel your pain.

19:37 Goodwin looked into the future on God.
Did Corey put the soda back?
not just black dad's, mexican dad's can be pretty rough.

Lmao darth vader spoutin' "niggeaah"
King Kong Aint Got Shit On Me
movie so good it was scary
This movie seems like an anthology of an abusive parent, esp black. Cant speak for other races but I can relate for sure.
it's not just black parents who act this way. It's not race dependent. I can attest to that.
All groups of human dad's can act like this heck got a friend who mother is like Troy Maxon
damn it my parents are making me watch this movie today
This movie looks good.
Man, watching this makes me feel so happy to have been raised by the white half of my family, because as EVERYONE knows, with white people it's all sunshine and roses. Especially here in good ol' Arkansas!
what i'm saying is that my life growing up was basically a pretty enjoyable episode of roseanne, but if she had been single and had 2 black sons
Now, if this had been A Raisin in the Sun, I would be feeling uncomfortable, because my brother is basically Walter from that, and it isn't great.
Um every race can act this way this is not only a black experience but I get your point glad you so happy white
Please tell me I'm not the only one getting sick of these subtle movie titles?
cjtier explain please

Skeptical Baby. It would have been a nice title.
Skeptical Baby that makes sense.
this is the title of the play written years ago
