When people mentioned, “The girls today aren’t like women in the past, like their grandmas”..well gentlemen this is what many of our grandmas went through. Women especially black women were limited in getting an education, career etc so they had to settle with grandpas infidelity, disrespect and put themselves last.

This is a world wide problem. Men cheating and being emotionally physically abusive happens daily. Terrifies women to a point of suffering alone without a partner because the alternative is just a different kind of hell

Growing up with a broken home is not an excuse you have to want better for yourself and cherishing the nuclear family is the only way forward.

Her monologue is the best and most eloquent explanation of why infidelity is wrong. The feelings she expresses and the points she makes are all so incredibly true and real.

Coming from a same scenario (my dad cheated on my mom on a later stags in life where it didn’t even make sense at all) this made me really sad cause I watched it with her and seeing her bawl her eyes out cause this character was expressing exactly what she was going trough was healing in a way but very heartbreaking for me as her child to see her like that, they’re still married but I appreciate this scene for perfectly encapsulating the type of feeling and the type of wife my mom was up until this point 😢

Troy took more than he ever gave. There’s a meanness in him and ugliness a selfiness. He gave himself permission to not settle but reach for his joy. Then made damn sure no one else did.

How he just strolled his ass in there and announced that like she was supposed to be cool with it is what pissed me off the most. Beyond selfish and hateful. Viola is amazing in this scene.

Near the end of this video when Troy tightly grabbed Rose's arm to the point where she is saying "Troy you're hurting me" Cory ran out and pushed his father away to the gate defending his mother. At that point I was proud of Cory ... I probably would've done the same thing. Troy was so DAMN!!! selfish throughout the film regarding his needs that he completely forgot about Rose and her needs in which she left no stone unturned telling him.
Reminded me of when my parents used to fight I was always the one protecting my mother from my dad.

@@jeffreyworthen7033 I believe he grabbed hold of her arm so tightly due to fear. Emotionally, he was losing her. Rose was a constant. She had been there for 18 years. Men don't realize just how much a woman brings, gives and sacrifices until she stops. Women often hold their peace about deferred dreams and desires. Rose unleashed them on Troy like a tidal wave. That's when Troy realized what he had and what he traded it for. That's when he realized that more than ever he wanted/ needed to hang on to her.

My boyfriend didn't have a child but started messing around with his old girlfriend again. All my so-called friends knew. I found out through my father. One of his friends thought he should know before I got hurt. It was too late. My heart was shattered. All I can say prayers to both of you and that God blessed you both with someone who loves you unconditionally .👏🏾

While I can understand his frustrations, none of that is Rose's fault. While I can understand having dreams, aspirations and desires I also understand that he didn't find anything in that other woman except a momentary distraction from what was real. His wife and son are real. Rose's pain heartbreak and despair are real and all he wants to do is explain why she should understand HIS NEEDS! She has no fall back. No education, no job, no money and nowhere to turn. Now she has to fight for a man who has essentially told her that she will be sharing him from now on.
This is why MODERN WOMEN get their education, certification, career and bag before even considering marriage. That way we can give you your wish and let you have your side chick.

What always blows my mind is just how selfish and how much of an ego he has that he completely fails to hear what his wife said and instead heard what he wanted. With that line she said he gives but doesn’t realize he takes too, yet he decided to hear that she think he doesn’t give at all.
Probably my favorite scene in the movie though, Viola & Denzel did incredible in this scene. 2 of the best actor of this century 💯

I didn’t want a man with children and i told him if he did i wouldn’t go out with him. He was surprised but fortunately 🎉it was just him. We do everything together. And we have a special needs son. This scene shows the selfishness of a man to think it's always about him. Same situation going on today. A good wife dealing with a selfish man. Black women are being thrown under the bus by Black men, but they have forgotten that Black women have been standing in with them without any regard that we can't bloom because they men we're with are hard rocky soil.

HANDSOME as EVER !! iN FENCES, He should have had a different actress playing his wife, perhaps Lynn Whitfield, Angela Bassett, the woman who played his wife , perhaps LANETTE McKEE, DEBBIE ALLEN, Goddess Queen Phylicia Rashad, Jasmine Guy , no self respecting WOMAN would have allowed Denzel Washington to see her with drizzle oozing from her nostrils , tears yes, but the slot, took it WAY TOO FAR. . for some of us. . . since then , mainly because of the slot scene, the way they portrayed her in Moms Mabley and the title of the show where she was DIGNIFIED Smart Pretty PROFESSOR, yet the title of the show was off putting, hence, uninterested in any of her films all we see is the slot scene,s_ot scene crying was too much. too graphic . not good to see while eating a meal. very yuck nasty.
