I can see this as a pretty good horror film if done right. Handsome man wakes up Jennifer Lawrence, gets to know her and acts nice. Then, by the middle of the film is gets weird and she discovers how he's been reading up on her and how he destroyed her sleeping chamber just so he could be with her. She'd then find other empty cases of what she learns later to be of missing women and figures out he's been opening cases for a while now.... could've been a really good thriller.
Totally agree, though it didn't even need to have past history for him, but his obsession with her could escalate making a much more interesting climax. I would have loved to see a horror/thriller version of this movie.
You legit came up with a better concept, imagine if they marketed this as a romantic film and we all found out opening weekend Pratt is a creep and its a thriller.
My (budget) MAC has a backup system. Airplane personnel make sure we know about safety and escape procedures. It does seem odd that an expedition so complex would only have a robot bartender without a tech-bot to assist in diagnosing and implementing repairs. Would love to read the original script. Might be a more involving story.
Mariko True Not trying to defend this movie, I didn't like it too, but those safety measures on the planes, for example, are a result of some accident. In the past, pilots didn't have to lock their cockpit doors, only after terrorist attacks. There were no swim jackets underneath seats too. Titanic developers didn't put enough lifeboats, they were too arrogant.
Passengers was enjoyable if you like Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, but it would have been more interesting had they dealt with the moral dilemma. Jim had a very sympathetic reason for waking her up, and let’s be honest most people would make the same choice or kill themselves. You can’t underestimate how devastating isolation can be on the human psyche. Problem is that they never effectively sell you on how devastating isolation is. They do enough to make you buy it, but not enough to really drive it home, and it comes of as a typical romance movie with some interesting twist. He feels more inconvenienced and bored as opposed to desperate for companionship. A year is enough time logically speaking, but they don't make you buy it emotionally speaking. It would be better if they played up his damaged psyche, really made us feel how lonely he is, play up the desperate angle in their romance, make the revelation to which she eventually reluctantly goes back to him because he’s all that she has, have him die then have Aurora go through the same isolation only for her to make the same choice that Jim made, which makes the point that the situation is not morally clear cut. Also Bill Cosby is definitely rapey. He had no consent whatsoever. This is an understandable moral quandary. I defend the premise, but the execution is very flawed. All in all Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence made it fun and entertaining especially after Assassin’s Creed. I’d give it a high rental.
I recently became a fan. It took me awhile because I'm not a fan of louder obnoxious laughter every 3min. I don't like lowering my volume every 3 min. When Billy is in the studio they use him cracking up as a beginning. I then found videos of them laughing but not blowing up the mic. I love Billy's baritone voice tho 💛
That was the complaint. People, without knowing the original script, said it would have been better of we found out when she found out or towards the end
Blake F You're not to far off. Heck, it feels like they took something from a blacklist of scripts, that are really good, but are held back til production and the specific budget can work for the would be film.
This was originally gonna star Keanu Reeves. They probably decided to get somebody more conventionally attractive for the male lead in hopes that maybe the audience wouldn't feel so creeped out by what he does. If Keanu pulled that shit you know that Jlaw wouldn't end up falling in love with him, much less forgiving him.
atrapforfools He's very unique-looking. Some people might find him ugly, others might find him attractive. But he's definitely not as conventionally attractive as Chris Pratt. I will say the dude has aged amazingly.
I do think it would have been interesting to keep the original cast, but they should have changed the script or at least actually made it into a thriller, and not try to pass this creepy shit as romance.
The cast and the love story was gonna bring in a wide audience, the producers were probably responsible for the whole play it safe execution knowing the scifi aspect was enough to bring in the nerd money
This movie did not need to be 110 Million Dollar film. Side note 40 Million was for the leads Chris(12 Million) and Jennifer(28 Million). This film only needed like 50 Million mid-budget film.
Is Martin aware of the fact that in Prison you are still around other people and interact with them? Is he aware that leaving a prisoner in Solitary confinement for a year would be illegal because it is considered cruel and unusual punishment as well as torture? A year completely isolated can easily drive some people insane.
Funny how they complained about how the movie got all " actiony "..But the first shots of the movie are showing you a potentially catastrophic accident involving the ship...Essentially letting you know that bad shit will happen later while they attempt to repair the ship. It's a solid film imo, that ignites coversation about morality & the human need for companionship. Fucking visually fantastic, with 2 main protagonists that you actually care about and want to see survive the turmoil & doomed ship scenario...Unlike most of Rogue One's characters, whom could've all been sliced up by Vader in that last ( Only reason to watch the movie )scene, and I wouldn't have given 2 shits lol.
@@thefirstbourne149 Yes, I don't like her at all, since she's an unprofessional actor that doesn't even try to pretent to give a fuck when acting in a movie she doesn't care about, but if it's a movie that she deems worthing of doing the work she's paid for, she can do a great job, which is the reason she did get hired for some good movies.
People are really painting Chris Pratt as the villain of this movie, and I am really bothered by that. For one, he did not have a choice, he didn't know that his pod was going to malfunction, he was condemned to death first by a company/ship/fate whatever. To make matters worse, the company didn't have any back-up plan for that, that is kind of fucked up, why wouldn't you secure every detail to make sure that your passengers are safe and get to their destination? That's like a passenger needing CPR or a gas mask and the flight company didn't think he deserved a chance. I do agree that 1 year in space was a bit too short, they could have at least pushed it to more or showed us that he was a really sociable person that didn't do well in stress and solidarity. Even the fact that he managed to open a pod by himself is a huge convenience. So yeah, I blame 90% of the problems in the movie on the company. Chris Pratt's character only did what he needed to survive the madness. Imagine if he didn't do it and instead decided to take his frustrations and get revenge on the ship instead for fucking his life and making it hell. I think everyone could agree that he deserved to have his revenge if that happened to you.
Man, I can't imagine what kind of person would leave all their friends on Earth and fuck off into space for 120 years. Like everything about the very idea is just so inhumane.
What also irked me about this film was when Lawrence Fishburns character found out what Pratt's character did? It was like" yo, you did a bad thing, but man, you got this girl, sweet..." and then gives his card i.d. to stockholm syndrome guy and not to the lady who was victimized... what a waste of storyline. and what a waste of good actors...
This movie is great, because it makes sense after you have seen it from start to end. Most films today jump from scene to scene and you first think it all connects with each other, but after the end and some musing about the causalities, you come to the conclusion that the logic of events is completely broken. He waking up was not a random event, because his hypersleep cell broke down. The cause of his fate would have caused the whole ship to die. If he hadn't woken her, he may have commited suicide and the ship would have been destroyed shortly after his own death. Without spoilers you can't understand why this film is great and is not about a beautiful cupple, but about cause and effect. Even bad ethical decissions can have a good outcome you never calculated into your egoistic thinking. This film is so much better than Gravity. 9/10 (Gravity gets 2/10 from me.)
Same problem I had in game of thrones, you can't have a rape scene and then brush it off and the girls falls in love. You can't have a guy destroy a person's dreams and hopes and then she falls in love. That's a fucking nightmare movie, some fucking psychopathic shit.
Silver Mirai That's true, but there are super rare cases where the victim subconsciously romanticize the situation in order to deal with the trauma, so it is possible.
I really disagree and disapprove of calling the plot twist spoken about in the video "rape". That word gets thrown around way too much lately. Rape is rape. Unless he forced her to have sex with him against her will, it's not rape. Him not being honest with her isn't rape. Him being creepy isn't rape. Him waking her up isn't rape. Rape is rape.
Nonsense. The words we have to describe this is "he woke her up from Cryosleep so he wouldn't be alone". THAT'S the words because that's what it is. Calling it rape is trying to change it into something that it's not. If this were a story about him doing something so she gets stranded on a desert island with him? Not rape. False imprisonment? Maybe. Rape? Of course not. Doing something to someone against their will isn't rape. RAPE is rape.
JazGalaxy I think the word it is used metaphorically here. He is taking away her agency, control of her body and of her life, essential taking away her free will, choice and consent. He took something just to satisfy himself, loving and caring for himself more than this other persons life, her thoughts, dreams, future, and feelings be damned. That kind violation, it can be seen as forced imprisonment, Stockholm syndrome, and yes essential a death sentence . So given all this, I can why people are comparing it to rape, in terms to the aftermath, motivation of the victimizer, and the long irreversible damage it does to the victim. But I understand why one would be angry by the use of the word, especially, it is still used to flippantly in general, and people to still to see and feel the true weight of it.
Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down is Rapey. Martin's right though, it plays on that if a dude is good looking enough then everything will work itself out organically. If Chris Pratts character were played by Carrot Top, it'd be SUPER rapey.
Agree, but I will say as a woman, it feels creepy and rapey as it is (doesn't matter if it's played by Chris Pratt). But that's just me. Left me with an uneasy feeling at the end.
Lady Duck Maybe she did acknowledge she found a man who is no saint, but was competent enough to save the ship and her from utter destruction? Even willing to give his live in the end, knowing that he had decided unethically at first, but in the end saved her life too? There are many causes for love. Also women do many unethical things. Some even leave their kids to rot after finding a new partner. Why do all people only talk about women as victims, even those who want to empower them? The only illogical thing about the film was the irreplacability of the hypersleep devices for both. They were able to repair the computer controlling the fusion reactor. Why couldn't they find a specialist for hypersleep cells and wake him up after getting access to most command functions? I would have sent them back to hypersleep and the new world instead of dying together on the ship. Would have made it also less creepy. Could have ended as the great adventure of their life without getting married. jm2c
I teel you a secret. Wome love good looking men and even forgive them unvorgivable sins. Some even fall in love with terrible criminals and free them from jail.
Okay, so... it's a ship, right? ......so where the fuck are the life rafts? It doesn't matter that it's in space, it doesn't matter that there may not be anywhere to go.... IT'S A SHIP, it should have lifeboats... And those life boats should have their own cryo-stasis pods or whatever. So the entire premise is one big fucking plothole, tbh.
I din't say there would be anywhere to go, mate. But it's a ship that doesn't have a contingency plan against disaster...that's retarded. Say there's a fire on the ship and it needs to be vented out. The ship can be saved, but where can the people go? Maybe to sealed compartments, or maybe lifeboats
I knew it! There was an old 'Weird Science' story about a guy that does the same thing, but he does it over and over again, every couple of years killing the old woman and waking up a new woman. This film should have had other people waking up because of cheap sleeping pods.
aw man. it sounds like if they had explored that deeper aspect it could have been a really cool movie, like Gone Girl levels. plus, it would put Chris Pratt in a sort of villainous role for once(that i know of) oh well.
No, not a death sentence . . a prison sentence. Nothing about the forced awakening puts her life in danger, it changes her destination and futurre to being trapped solely on this beautiful ship with a questionable guy versus a turnkey awakening and exit from a frontier planet for a story/book for people generations away from her starting point. It's creepy, it's cruel to strip her freedom/choice away but it's not a death sentence by the nature of no jeopardy to her living out her full years . . and spoilers (the way the ship was falling apart), it wound up being partially helpful having someone awake (even minus the engineering/mechanical skills)//
I'm wondering if the movie's concept was inspired by the old Twilight Zone episode called The Long Morrow, which did a better job of making us feel the loneliness of being in space AND in love.
Its not rapey at all. If he was portrayed as a slimey guy & talking about how he needs to get laid, and wakes her up immediately then you could say that. But he wasn't. He was a dorky guy and spent over a year trying to put himself to sleep, trying to get into the engine room to see whats going on, and playing basketball by himself to not go crazy. There was nothing nefarious about him. The fact that he eventually succumbed to lonelyness is not because hes rapey, it is because he is human. We're social creatures by nature and after a while of solitude it becomes agony; its like being trapped in a nightmare. Whether he woke someone up in a year or he waited 5 or 10 years, he would've eventually woke someone up. I think anyone would have that moment. He fought off the urge for a while but it just took one day that he loses it and its done.
I was thinking the exact same thing during the credits! I thought there were only four actors, but Andy Garcia's name popped up I thought "oh I guess he was the voice of some of one of the robots or something". Turns out it was the bearded guy coming out of the elevator at the end? Didn't even have any lines? Dafuq?!
The last 3 Reviews you guys put out gave me some kind of high (not just because I'm smoking a blunt).... ASSassin's Creed was hilarious, Sing had a Twist, and this feels Intense. I keep wondering if I want to hear the Spoiler, or just see the movie myself out of curiousity.
It starts as a solid good movie up to the middle where the whole relationship between Pratt and Lawrence is really not that interesting due to the tons of clichés and you start getting bored. The ending is really disapointing.
I understand peoples issues with this movie, but I personally thought they did a decent job of somewhat justifying their decisions, while still showing they were wrong. as for the ending, at least it didn't end before 90 years had passed, thats what I was expecting.
Unless Will Smith comes in telling him how to act around the ladies, no one would buy it. Plus people are tired of Kevin James getting the hot chick in movies.
You guys are kind of confusing me. will Chris and Jennifer die or not? From this commentary I think I am on Korey's side that it's bad but not that bad; but Martin and Korey made it sound like Chris doing what he did would condemn her to death. A year alone in space is not the same as a year in prison; prison at least still has other people to interact with. I would like to know what Korey feels the issue was that was raised by such a situation.
this movie is oddly similar to the Red Turtle. Guy on a stranded island kills a turtle, it turns into a beautiful woman and lives with him forever. ???
From my angle, it's a tale about fate and decision making . That is Chris character was woken up cause the ship was failing (or was it accidentally) . Once he is brought there without his consent, seemingly his option is to cascade that effect onto another or let it end with just him, much like how ppl are born and give birth to more ppl. It was not morally a big deal, but her reaction was expected, which she came to over look once she realized not everything in life is according to her will, they need to survive; fate is a bitch! Still the movie could be made better.
Tom Rothman the clown that cause the mess of X3 and The Wolverine did a Lot of Rewrite to this film. Like the Reveal in the first 20 min was suppose to be in the Last act. Other things. Tom Rothman ruins most things he touches.
Maybe Spoilers! I haven't seen the movie and the video. I predict that Chris wakes Jennifer up from cryogenic sleep and he has to hide that from her. Am I in the ballpark?
love it I would wake up a guy in space if I was alone I wanted I wanted to see homestead 2 planet saw this movie last night its a sci-fi movie space traveling is realistic
I don't see what he did as "rapey". The Fucking dude is on the verge of going insane. He did do that so he could have sex. He did it cause he was alone. And being alone for over a year can drive someone nuts. Does that excuse what he did... FUCK NO!
The director fails to bring the suspense combined with sci fi elements in this romance/sci fi movie. Wrong choice of director and wrong casting of Pratt as he is a comedian actor.
Why can't the bartender have legs? Do they have trouble with android legs in the future? Are they just too tricky so they say fuck it, put 'em on castors.
I can tell you what happens without even watching it ......I'm guessing one of them wakes the other up because they are going crazy by them self hence moral dilemma

This film should have had other people waking up because of cheap sleeping pods.
that would have made this movie so much more interesting.
aw man. it sounds like if they had explored that deeper aspect it could have been a really cool movie, like Gone Girl levels. plus, it would put Chris Pratt in a sort of villainous role for once(that i know of) oh well.
awesome reviews as always you guys
2 minutes into the review and I just gotta say Goodwin looks so nice in this!! Diggin the clothes :^D
Dude, we get why Chris wakes her up, but they argue if it's right or wrong.
Its wrong lol. Bogus.
dude with the beard sound like Donald Glover (ChildishGambino)
Great review. I agree with the major criticism. That was pretty messed up on Chris' part.
So incredibly unbothered about this film, maybe if its on Netflix one day.
They literally look like the male and female version of each other.
Jim couldn't have any first class food but was offered unlimited alcohol, I'd be ok with that.
I begrudgingly love this movie. It is a guilty pleasure.
It looks like 2001: A SPACE ODESSY with a crappy love story.
Moon is a much more grown up tale of what life in space is potentially like.
10:25 As a published writer, I can attest that mechanics make way more money than writers. LOL.
Double toasted I hope you guys have a Very Merry Christmas
Rodimus Prime your welcome
About waking her up..it was a moral issue at the beginning, but the ship was doomed anyway so they actually save everybody's life !!
I'm wondering if the movie's concept was inspired by the old Twilight Zone episode called The Long Morrow, which did a better job of making us feel the loneliness of being in space AND in love.
I've been looking forward to this review since the trailer dropped.
dude, your show is fantastic. A real gem. But one small correction, Pratt is an engineer. A mechanical engineer in the movie.
6:33 I'm done. lol
Yeah me too ! 😂😂😂😂
I keep wondering if I want to hear the Spoiler, or just see the movie myself out of curiousity.
why do you only review us movies?
two attractive people stuck in space....what else are thry supposed to do?....
Reminds me of that scene in Rocketman

Hey DT have you seen Alien:Covenant trailer!
I don't think Jennifer Lawrence is good looking at all.this movie feels like it's 50 shades of grey in space
You would smash. Don't lie lmao.
JLaw is 5"9 (1.75m), how is that short? Who do you compare her with? Scarlett Johansson of 1.60m?
lol bruh
I know right? She has a chubby and puffy face, tiny hooded eyes and seems a bit dumb.
they could have gotten Kevin James to play chris pratt's character. 😁
Unless Will Smith comes in telling him how to act around the ladies, no one would buy it. Plus people are tired of Kevin James getting the hot chick in movies.
Matthios Hunduma true but kevin james looks more like a blue collar working guy than chris pratt tho.
people are saying this is titanic in space. is that true? or is it like twilight in space with Edward watching Bella sleep?
Avangeliz Quest Twilight.
One step creepier than Twilight. At least in Titanic Jack didn't force Rose to anything.
I would like to know what Korey feels the issue was that was raised by such a situation.
regret spoiling myself because im really interested in the film after that twist.
this movie is oddly similar to the Red Turtle. Guy on a stranded island kills a turtle, it turns into a beautiful woman and lives with him forever. ???
I missed you guys
First review I disagree with these guys I would give it a Strong Matinee or a low full price. The movie was not bad and it was interesting.
OMG I want that lava lamp!!!!!!!!!!!!!
there is nothing to spoil lol. if you have been following this movie from the gate you know what will happen lol
They ain't understand gravity
Must watch 4 sci-fi lovers !!!
I loved this movie!
Same
I'm sorry, Jennifer Lawrence has charisma?
Mega Killertron no she doesn't
He gave her a choice at the end to chose to stay or go back to sleep, so he made his selfish act okay.
How come evey time i go they say and do what they say how do say come
From my angle, it's a tale about fate and decision making .
Wayward Pines in Space
Tom Rothman the clown that cause the mess of X3 and The Wolverine did a Lot of Rewrite to this film. Like the Reveal in the first 20 min was suppose to be in the Last act. Other things. Tom Rothman ruins most things he touches.
Yo, you guys gotta check out the Alien Covenant trailer
Maybe Spoilers!
I haven't seen the movie and the video. I predict that Chris wakes Jennifer up from cryogenic sleep and he has to hide that from her. Am I in the ballpark?
Lol! Max Steel double feature.
First two thirds were great the last 3rd is B movie territory.
love it I would wake up a guy in space if I was alone I wanted I wanted to see homestead 2 planet saw this movie last night its a sci-fi movie space traveling is realistic
This movie is incredible cheesy. I miss the good old 80' sci-fi movies. If this one was made in the 80' it would be way darker than this.
Martin and Goodwin are right. Korey seems really flawed these days. :/
no. they're taking it to the extreme and they're bordering on being wrong.
Ahiru77
Not really.
Dr. Girlfriend comment ftw!!!
He stalks her, 'falls in love' and wakes her up to bang. That's it. A lot worse than I thought it would be
there reading to much into this film i understand chris pratt character and what he did
The Dark Knight
We all don't know what we would do in Chris pratts situation. Saying that, it was fucked up waking Jennifer Lawrence up.
Tired of the word 'damn' as used by Fishburn. Becoming a bit of a cliché.
I was looking forward to this movie more than Rogue One. I still might see it.
Upful Soul this is still more enjoyable imo. Way fewer plotholes
what plotholes did rogue one have?
Twilight Zone plot
I actually didn't like this movie. Even when In added myself to try and make even better didn't work. C-
He was lonely for a year!!!!.....maybe its not earth years
I would have woke everybody up...if i can't sleep, nobody is staying sleep. #TheMoreTheMerrier💋
i liked it :D
kinda disappointed in you guys, got yourself a very shallow movie about a "beautiful" white man, meets a "beautiful" white woman and saves the day. Your typical bull crap Hollywood movie.
