- Norman Finkelstein’s address to the UCD Philosophy Society, University College Dublin, on the current state of the occupied territories. Tuesday 10 Feb 2015
In his address, Dr Finklestein discusses the recent conflicts in the occupied territories which followed the kidnapping and killing of three Israeli youths and a Palestinian teen; Israel's anti-missile defence system, the Iron Dome; Isreal’s Operation Protective Edge; and possible ways to resolve the conflict.
Finkelstein, a political scientist, has written extensively on the political, social and historical state of Israel and the occupied territories. He famously and successfully dismantled and deconstructed 'From Time Immemorial' by Joan Peters which, at the time, was considered a foundational and invaluable text on the Palestine - Israel Conflict.
Finkelstein received his doctorate in 1988 from the Department of Politics at Princeton University. He currently teaches at Sakarya University’s Center for Middle Eastern Studies in Turkey. He is the author of ten books that have been translated into 50 foreign editions. The title of his latest book is Method and Madness: The hidden story of Israel’s assaults on Gaza.

I've been going through a difficult time in my life, Norman's passion his logic his conviction his pursuit of truth at all costs, his principles are what keep me sane, keep me floating , keep me hanging on, hats off to one of the greatest men in modern history

@@Long-Ball-Larry The problem with Israelis and a large margin of Jews is that they mix ethnicity and religion. An arab (a racial and ethnic label) is not necessarily a follower of Islam. There is no such thing as a 'Muslim state' that aspires to reunite all followers of Islam under one single banner. There is no such thing either for Christians or Hindus. Anyone can convert to any of these said religions in spite of race and physical characteristics. The fact that you dismiss anyone that acknowledges this as antisemitic says a lot about your personal bigotry and prejudices.

5:40 - Absolutely love it! Whatever your views are of Professor Finkelstein, one thing I do admire about him is that he's very simple and unpretentious. The man just said he's happened to spend a large part of his life reading, which he finds personally enjoyable. I love how simple that is. Only a simple person can appreciate such an endeavor.

I don't get his logic, he says himself that when there's a military operation of Israel in gaza there's a rise of antisemitism in Europe but says there's no connection between Israel and antisemitism, shouldn't there be a rise in anti Israel? And his suggestion about the Jewish state is nonsensical 21 nations can declare themselves Christians and 50 countries Muslims, be involved in wars and not worry about a rise in anti religion based hate but 1 country shouldn't declare itself jewish just so there won't be a rise in anti semitism, it like attacking a US born Chinese man for what China is doing with the uyghers, it doesn't make any sense unless you hate Chinese people, you wouldn't describe it as an anti China act, you would call it racism

I agree with him on a lot but the idea that minorities marrying into the ruling class means that that minority doesn’t face hate crimes or oppression is just patently and categorically wrong. This video came out in 2015 so obviously his claim of no rising antisemitism in the west hasn’t aged well.

This is because of antisemites like Finkelstein and their rhetoric. It has also risen around 1400% since the time of this video. So Finkelstein was incorrect. Finkelstein’s rhetoric directly fuels this antisemitic hatred through this erroneous idea that it is somehow justified to verbally and physically attack anybody on the planet who identifies as a Jew because you have a disagreement with Israeli policies. Acting like they are all one and the same when it suits you.
He claims to be the descendant of Holocaust survivors but directly contributed to antisemitism and spends his time trying to cultivate hatred for Jews and an environment for a second Holocaust. The only people that listen to him are anti-semites and far left tankies.
I wish we could have more honest discussions like these. Any honest discussion like this always gets an antisemitic label if someone who isn't Jewish dares to wade in. All that does is push the discussion underground.

@@Mogamishu , I don't think it is wrong to say that there has been a rise in attacks against Jews, I believe that is a statistical fact, (I'm sure you can recall some rather high profile cases in recent years) but I don't think there has been much of a change in how Europeans perceive Jews. If there has been a slight change, I unfortunately think that is mainly due to immigration from Middle eastern countries, many of which has long been fostering a culture of hatred towards Israel and by relation - Jews.
This is yet another common denominator between the extreme right and Islamic fundamentalism (just read OldSchools comments for further proof).
Even though there might a a kernel of truth in saying that Jews are a prevalent minority among the political and cultural elite in many western countries, that doesn't change the fact that your conspiracy talk of "Zionist-owned western Mainstream media" really only helps substantiate the perception of a rise in anti-Semitism.
