  • I recently purchased both the Anycubic Kobra 2 Max and the Elegoo Neptune 4 Max. People have been asking me “which one do I like the best” and “if you could pick one which you would you choose”. So here’s a video I put together discussing both options and ultimately the one that I think is the best out of the two options.
    If you’ve watched the review and you want more information on the Linear Rail Upgrade for the Elegoo Neptune 4 Max, here is the link to that.

    Never found such an honest and straight to the point 3D print channel. I've worked with 3D printers including the... Ender 3 Neo (we do not talk about that monstrosity), and I've been looking to buy a large format printer for large 3D print projects such as guitars. I could not find a single channel that was both honest and provided long term results for these printers. I also hate youtubers who don't get straight to the point so they can maintain viewership and get mid-roll ads. You deserve far more subscribers and I can't express how thankful I am that you make your videos. I can pre-troubleshoot my 3D printer before I even buy it thanks to you, without having to piece together obscure reddit posts and forums where people who shouldn't be using these machines complain when they stop working.

    Thanks for a review of these two side by side and your experience with them. Also nice to see you using them for your business. I considered greatly which of these two to purchase as I'm also needing to do bigger prints for a business. They certainly each have pros and cons, and I hadn't owned either company before. I went for the Elegoo 4 max and am still testing and tuning it right now. It does produce excellent quality and I'm pleased with it - though I too don't like having to manually level the bed. Honestly I'm surprised that they still have that, everyone else is moving to true auto leveling for these next generation printers...why did they keep that?? But direct drive extruder's I find are far better than bowden tube extruders. Your review inspired me that I may have to get a anycubic max 2 to see how it does. Thanks and all the best on your armor making!

      I’m glad it helped. I’ve been looking to expand my little print farm recently and I decided on another Elegoo. It was a really tough decision though. Like you said they both have their pros and cons. In the end I think I might be able to mod the Elegoo to be the best of both where the Anycubic seems to have cons that I can’t fix/mod. At least not yet anyway. I still really love my Anycubic though. It’s had less issues and prints faster. I’m working on a bed mod for the Elegoo and will upgrade to linear rails soon so it might end up to be my fast one after that.

    I really wish a company had a printer that were a hybrid of these two, specifically linear rails/SG15 bearings riding on linear motion shafts, without having it's hardware/software locked down as the kobra 2 max is. The fact that you cannot use the kobra 2 max with octoprint is a dealbreaker for me, since I've been used to using it with my previous and current printers.
    There are options out there that fulfill that requirement but they cost significantly more than either of these two, and there isn't a reason an option priced between the anycubic and elegoo couldn't exist.

    I've had my N4 Plus for a month now, and it's been great. That guide rail upgrade would be nice, but for a total of nearly $300 for the entire kit, when I paid $350 for the printer... Don't know if that's really worth it. I would like a bigger format printer. Maybe that OrangeStorm Giga Elegoo is working on. I could make an entire car fender out of that! lol It is awesome and amazing how quickly things are progressing in the 3D printing field.

      That’s been my hesitation as well. I want to upgrade to linear rails but don’t really have the funds for that right now. Maybe down the road. Hopefully before the POM wheels need to be replaced which from the posts I’ve been seeing doesn’t take long for them to wear out.

      I also have N4P and real linear rails would be nice but not for the price of a second printer. I'm not convinced by this system of metal rods and wheels. Regarding high speeds, when we switch to 0.6mm or 0.8mm movement speeds will probably go down due to limits of extruder. My printer is not going 24/7 so it is less of a problem for me.

    • @spirit_wolf123
      @spirit_wolf123 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are advantages to both systems linear rails advantage is less maintenance for the wheel it is vibration dampening your motion system is basically the same old machine or new there is only one true difference in the motion systems and that is belts versus screws as belts are faster and more accurate...
      The speed and accuracy on these printers is obtained through flow rate, pressure advanced compensation, and resonant frequency compensation (AKA vibration)... The changes(Extruder gear ratio heat chamber size accelerometer and processing speed)).
      Marlin versus klipper is basically microcontroller versus processor and its speed.

    One important advantage the Anycubic has over the Elegoo is the automatic Z offset calibration. Some people might not care about that, but I've always had issues with the Z adjustment screws loosening over time, and it is such a pain to readjust them. I basically only get a few good prints before there is a noticeable issue with the first layer which quickly worsens until bed adhesion becomes an issue. Enabling mesh bed leveling in Marlin did not help much but the 3D mesh topology chart in OctoPrint at least gives me a clear indicator when it's getting bad. I got so tired of dealing with that on my current printer that I'm looking at upgrading and the Anycubic Kobra 2 Plus seems like the perfect thing. The Max is too big to fit where I have my 3D printer, and I'm not sure I would have any use for the huge bed, but the Plus seems big enough to handle just about anything.
    Apart from that, it seems like there are more frequent issues with the Elegoo. Almost every review I've seen has experienced the blob of death and had to have the entire hotend assembly replaced. There are also many complaints on Reddit about this. It seems like the hardware is very similar between the two and the issues with the Elegoo are more software related, so they could be fixed with updates, but it still makes me wary of buying it right now.
    Also, the Elegoo seems to be louder, which is to be expected considering it has multiple part cooling fans, but as far as I can tell those extra fans don't seem to be doing anything for print quality, so it seems to just be added noise for no benefit. Fans blowing on the parts of the build that aren't currently being printed on seems unnecessary in any case.
    The built in lights on the Elegoo are nice though. Wish the Anycubic had that.

    Great honest Review,,,,, I have been researching 3D Printers for about three weeks, checked out all the top models, and I am leaning heavy towards the Kobra because of it's Build plate size and Low price.. Though every review that I've seen has the negative comment on it's closed software format, not allowing other outside programs to interface with it.... Should this be a deal breaker , and will that limit designs and future expansion of use.... Thanks for any feedback,,,, Alex

      I’m glad you liked the review. I still run both printers nonstop so they’re both great printers. I’ve had to repair both multiple times already so they aren’t without their faults either way you go. But to answer your question plainly, yes I believe the lack of access to the user interface on the Anycubic is a major drawback and has kept me from buying another one. There is a lot you can learn about klipper and how these machines work from the backend and mods you can do to improve your experience but if the machine is locked up and only the manufacturer has the key, well you’re kind of at their mercy. That being said if you don’t think you’ll dive that deep into 3D printing than the Anycubic works good. Some of the manufacturers features are pretty cool. Like the App! I don’t use it much for my type of printing but it’s a cool feature.

    Great video! I picked up the Neptune 4 Max a couple weeks ago. Mainly due to price as this is my first one.
    So far, I've had great luck! Only issue is loud squeking coming from the wheels, adjusting belt tension has helped a bit but ive lowered my travel speed at 250 mm/s which has eliminated any squeaks.

    So been looking at both printers. Both right now cost around $480 on their websites with holiday sales and such. I don't really see any linear rails on that Anycubic, just metal rods? But $150 or so to upgrade the Elegoo with them sounds a little rich, and I am looking into eventually having a setup with 2-3 printers with matching setups that can be used interchangeably. That said if the Anycubic goes back up to being $550+ for each when I go to get machines 2-3 then it's definitely a more expensive setup than the Neptunes. I do like the idea of not having to fiddle with stuff vibrating loose or needing to kludge together fixes.
    I guess if you were looking to have a matching set of 3 of either printer which would be the ecosystem you'd be more confident in?
    Seems like can't really go wrong with any direction so it's down to nuance like software and maintenance.

    • @Extreme4x4Dude

      Thank you for the feed back. It sent me down a rabbit hole but in a good way. I now know that the Anycubic has Linear Rods and not Linear Rails. I also now know the difference between the two. Sounds like Linear Rails will produce a better quality print and at higher speeds but they are harder to install/calibrate than linear rods due to the precision requirements.
      After making this video I did more research on nozzles and I agree the Anycubic nozzles are easier to get. I’m fact I ordered some in .6 and .8 sizes just to try them. Supposedly Elegoo is releasing the same nozzles this month sometime but I have yet to see anything about them actually being. I did order some through Ali but they have many shipped yet so it could just be a scam.
      I originally purchased two EN4MAX’s but canceled the second order because I had heard the AK2MAX might actually be better. I bought them for my tiny little print farm and they both have done well. I haven’t officially written off the EN4MAX but I am getting tired of working on it. The big saving grace for Elegoo is their wonderful customer service/support. If something goes wrong with the EN4MAX I know they will be there to take care of me. Anycubic does not have that sort of reputation so I’m still hesitant to invest into another 3D printer by them.
      All in all, I like both machines. They both print fast and with good detail. The AK2MAX has so far been less maintenance and the app is cool. I did find an app that works for the EN4MAX and if you want to dive into the Klipper rabbit hole the EN4MAX has more options to do so. For me if the EN4MAX would have come with linear rails, it would be no contest. I would invest in more of them.

      @@Extreme4x4Dude Glad to have helped you learn more. Definitely a lot of nuance to learn between roller track, linear guides, linear rods, supported linear rods, linear rails, boxways, dovetails... the last two are really more for heavy duty milling machines but it all is good info to have in the back pocket. Proper bearing truck linear rails for a 3D printer at this size that are a drop-in kit would be worth the money to upgrade if you're looking for the best finish. For me, I'm looking to print just really large shaped panels to make composite molds. They're all going to get a decent amount of finish sanding and post processing work done so I'm hoping for a 0.8 nozzle and run fast. So probably the benefits of the steel rails or linear rails would be lost in the process. I use POM wheels on a CNC router to cut aluminum sheet and while that is really pushing things, it does work.
      Looking a little more into it, the Elegoo reputation does seem slightly better in terms of service and support, and their ecosystem actually seems pretty open which I like: tired of dealing with proprietary and closed off ecosystems. So part of me thinks that maybe that might work better in the long run.
      Also Elegoo is talking about their Giga Kickstarter, which would be even better for my needs except that being one large machine you're limited to one nozzle to use the whole volume, and so to actually print something big will probably take a lot more time in total than breaking things up into smaller panels. Plus waiting until Summer? Meh.
      Thanks for the video and response. Would be good to see maybe some more side by side comparisons between the two over time.

      Happy to help! Thank you for the feedback. It helps me grow my knowledge as well. I plan to make more side by side comparisons in the very near future. It would likely be good for mass production of the same part but that might interest you more than someone in my shoes who’s producing prints that are made to order.

      Honestly I haven’t reviewed those two printers in person but I did a quick internet search and they both look like they use linear rods which is great. They both have the same print speeds. The Neptune has a little bit bigger build volume which is a plus to me. I think for these two printers it would come down to customer service and Anycubic is not known for having good customer support where Elegoo is known for having great support. The only other noticeable difference between the two is the way the build plate attaches. Anycubic appears to be hard mounted to the bracket system where Elegoo is still using springs and knobs to adjust the bed level. That would be a huge difference but if you’re new to 3d printing you may not want to fuss with adjusting the bed manually. Both have auto bed leveling but the difference is Anycubic is straight auto bed leveling where the Elegoo has to be manually leveled and auto leveled. Leading to slightly more work.

    I put a standard stamped metal spool holder on top of my Kobra 2 Max. There's an adapter available online for the side mount to put on top, but it's too long and the vibration is too strong. I bought the Kobra 2 over the Elegoo because of the manual wheels on the Elegoo. I hate those things. Hate hate hate. I like that I can just tell the Kobra 2 to calibrate and let it do it's thing. I did have to put a 1mm positive Z offset on it, which I don't understand since it should auto-z, but small price to pay. It's not a beginner's printer as it has to be managed, but I've done a lot of good work with it, and when you need something bigger than 256^3, what are you going to do? Sorry, but I have to disagree about the bed being adjustable, I think its a useful feature. Sure it can be a weak link, but on my Ender 3 pro I had a solution.
    Use a tiny bit of red Locktite, wiped off most of it, then worked the screws to loosen them up.
    Jam nuts would also work very well.
    Not sure I need one of these maxes, The pluses seem useful enough.
    Regarding the pow wheels, they are sacrificial. Not sure how much wobble would be an issue, but for the price... I'm hoping Elegoo comes out with Pro models with rails.

    • @Extreme4x4Dude
      @Extreme4x4Dude  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No reason to be sorry. You have your opinion and I respect that. From my experience the Anycubic has had no bed leveling issues and it’s fixed to the bracket where both my Elegoo Neptune 4 Max’s have consistently been a problem when it comes to bed leveling and knobs loosening from the vibrations in the printers. I tried the red locktite. It made things worse and I had to cut off the screw and replace it. Blue locktite might work but I’ve switched to locking nuts instead of knobs. I’m still playing around with the setup. I’m going to try the klipper screw tilt next. It’s supposed to make adjusting the knobs easier. I think combining that with blue locktite and some locking nuts might do the trick but we shall see. The plus is definitely a good enough size for most things. I print a lot of armor and huge helmets so it’s nice to have the big build plates from the max. The Pom wheels wore out in a month from the speed and I’ve already had to replace them. My newest EN4M has linear rails upgrade and it’s working out well so far.

    There is no way the filament can be reversed back out of the PTFE tube. This is a direct drive extruder, the extruder is in the hotend itself. So there's simply nothing for the extruder to grab onto to reverse the filament since the extruder is right next to the nozzle. The filament runout sensor should stop the print while there is still some filament sticking out of the tube that you can use to pull it out. If it doesn't stop the print in time I can imagine getting the filament out would be a pain since you would have to remove the PTFE tube.
    The PTFE tube is technically optional, there are mounting points on the top of the printer for a spool holder so it could be used the same way as the Elegoo. I'm not entirely sure what purpose the PTFE tube serves with a direct drive extruder, I guess it just prevents the filament from catching on anything and gives you more flexibility with the spool holder. It's certainly not necessary as it is with traditional bowden tube extruders where the tube is the only thing guiding the filament to the hotend.
    Perhaps they found that having the filament mounted on the top of the printer reduced the print quality by putting the center of gravity further up, thus necessitating the PTFE tube since the extruder would have a hard time pulling the filament sideways. It would make sense. That's the only reason I can think of.

      I’m not knowledgeable enough in this area and frankly I don’t care enough to argue with people online. What I do know is that in the settings, I can retract filament with the click of a button so I would assume that it can retract filament since it did when I hit the button. 🤷‍♂️ The small PTFE tube inside the neck of the hotend is an issue as it tends to melt. Both the Elegoo and Anycubic have it. I’m planing to replace the neck with an all metal or bi metal neck to eliminate the PTFE or Bowden Tube as others like to call it. 🤷‍♂️ I appreciate you watching my videos and your comments.

    • @Jdbye
      @Jdbye 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Extreme4x4Dude Not trying to argue, just trying to think of why it might not retract when it detects a filament runout. I wasn't really expecting a reply. I imagine it won't retract very far until it runs out of filament to grab onto. If the end of the filament is already halfway down the PTFE tube before the runout sensor stops the print, it seems likely it wouldn't be able to retract far enough to get the end to stick out for you to grab and pull out. But I don't have one of these so I don't know exactly how the filament runout behaves. Just trying to think about it logically based on the technology that's in the printer. In any case, I appreciate the reply.
      Just one question, is the Kobra 2 still your pick? I'm trying to figure out what 3D printer I should get to upgrade my old one. I was leaning toward the Kobra 2 but I found out it lacks a web UI and is very closed down so now I'm not sure. Not being able to upload files to the printer from my slicer is a huge deal breaker. The Elegoo supports that and has a web UI as well. I might end up going for something completely different, like the Creality K1 Max, since that is Core XY, so it should shake less when printing at high speed since the bed is not moving much. But not sure.

    If you want to dampen the vibrations You need to mount the printer on something heavy (fixed tight and firm) 10mm iron or 50mm concrete , so that the printer gets heavy, then you can put something soft underneath to dampen the sound.

      To summarize, I’d say it doesn’t matter they both work, they both break, they both need regular maintenance, and they both make me want to pull my hair out. At the moment my Anycubic won’t print worth a damn but a couple weeks ago both my Elegoo Neptune 4 Max’s were broke down. All in all I’d buy another Elegoo over an Anycubic but if I was new to 3d printing I’d buy a CoreXY printer like the Qidi Tech X-Max 3. 3D printing isn’t easy and it requires patience and problem solving skills when something does break and it will. No matter what anyone says, they all break eventually and they all require maintenance. Anyone that says otherwise is either lying, neglects their printer, or hasn’t had it long enough to have a valid opinion. 😆👍

      It was a failed attempt at dampening the vibrations. I didn’t have a large enough stone so I just took them out all together. I’m still playing around with different things to see if I can absorb some of the vibrations coming off these printers.

      Simple physics at play. One kilogram of filament cantilevered above the lower frame amplifies the inertia of the mass of the bed+model as it slams on the brakes. We drive bed slingers everyday. They are called cars.

    I can use nylon to print on both printer?

    • @Extreme4x4Dude
      @Extreme4x4Dude  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I only print with PLA. I’ve never tried printing Nylon. I would think that a CoreXY printer like the Qidi Tech C-Max 3 that I just setup would be able to with the right hardened steel nozzle since it’s an enclosed 3D printer but again Ive never printed with anything other than PLA so I wouldn’t know for certain.

      Anycubic support completely ignored my multiple emails before I purchased mine. They did respond within a day when I had an issue with the printer but I ended up ordering a second Elegoo Neptune 4 Max instead of another Anycubic Kobra 2 Max. At the end of the day I can mod my EN4M to make it better and they seem to have better support. I also like that I can access Klipper on the Elegoo and Anycubic you can’t. Currently the Anycubic can print faster but once I add linear rails to the Elegoo I have a feeling the Elegoo will be faster and more accurate. I’m also working on a fixed bed mod for my EN4M to make it closer to the setup that the AK2M has. If it works I’ll post a video on how to do it. Best of luck with your printer. Hit me up if you have questions or need assistance. 😉👍

    The problem with these printers starts after some wear and tear. The rubber wheels, belts ect. not printers for the average joe.

    • @Extreme4x4Dude
      @Extreme4x4Dude  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s true for all 3D printers. Even the most expensive ones will break and need maintenance eventually. I cover this in another video and I’m pretty sure I mention it in this video. 3D printing is not for everyone. You must have problem solving skills and at least a small amount of patience.

      From my experience with three different printer manufacturers, that’s the problem with all of them. It’s frustrating. Some fan boys will tell you not all manufacturers have these issues but that has not been my experience so I have a hard time believing them. You should check out my newest video on this Elegoo. It’s definitely a quality control issue. I’m currently looking at other manufacturers printers right now.

    Just to let everyone know, ANYCUBIC is not a reputable company to do business with. They do not answer emails for support or as of now, to return the product. They just ignore you and hope you go away. If you are lucky enough to get a perfect product, it is probably a good deal, but, if you need any support, just forget about these guys even acting like they are a REAL company. I will sell my Kobra 2 Max for $250 now to anyone that wants it. What a waste !!!

      Sorry to hear about your experience. I’ve heard horror stories about their customer service. What seems to be the problem? Maybe we can figure it out? As much as I would love to buy another one for a great price, I’d rather help you get it working if I’m able too. I’m not an expert but I’ve made a lot of mistakes and learned things the hard way.

    • @WindowBlazerl
      @WindowBlazerl 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for the reply. I just got a return shipping label to ship it back. Had several issues. One was having it make a load noise and it would start printing shifted about 20mm back. Could never get it to finish an ABS job. The Z axis seemed to jump around on me, had to constantly adjust it. The print head knocked over some models. I think I just got a bad unit. I did have a few prints that came out great with PLA, but I print with ABS or ASA most of the time. The problem is, nobody wants to hire USA support, they do everything from China and unless you have really conscientious employees, it is almost impossible to do customer service from there.

    POM is Delrin plastic. A fairly tough material used in things like knife handles. And of course printer wheels. It is chosen because it usually resists flat spots unlike an HDPE or Teflon.
