There's a much easier way of doing this. I use DEFINE NEW MULTILEVEL LIST, then when the Enter formatting for number comes up, I just type Chapter before the 1, and link that to Heading 1.
Thanks for this tip. I had already created a document with numbered figures and tables before trying this, therefore I had to apply this by inserting a dummy caption once again and linking to Heading 1. Once this was done, it had been applied to all figures and tables and I deleted the dummy caption. After a lot of updating fields, my document is looking good 👍
Something i have been looking for desperately... i was so frustrated about that "0" popping up every time and ruining the entire document. Thanks a lot sir for this.
Thank you very much. But, you got me thinking...Its almost 2020 and ms word still can't figure out one of the biggest ' problems' in thesis writing? It made me question if the people at Microsoft ever go to school.
But how do I link the figures to sub-chapters/sub-topics within a chapter? Is it the same process? Like what should we do to tell Word that we are starting a sub-chapter within a chapter?
North Carolina A&T Graduate College. Sir If I have Chapter 1 Section 1.1 Sub Section 1.1.1 And Here Figure no will be ?????????? Fig 1.1 or Fig 1.1.1 ??????
But what if you want to link to different headings...or if you want to include chapter number for some of the figures but not others? Like what if you have Appendices which have a different heading number style (i.e., 'A, B, C' vice '1, 2, 3')?
You can still use it and just delete the word "chapter". Or you can make a different heading style (I name it HEADINGS) and link it to heading 1. I use this for declaration, Table of contents, list of figures, etc.
@@doraduplessis2727 Hey I'm glad to see that you're trying to help out everyone. Can I get a reply from you now if you know this. I'm suffering and crying due to this, as my supervisor said I've to insert chapter based figure number like 1.1,2.1. I've done this by following this video but the problem is there are numbers in my table of contents like 1.chapter 1. How can i remove this numbers from table of contents? When i try to do this my all figure numbers messed up and it becomes 0.1,0.2 like this. If you know the solution please help me

That is the worst way to format in MS Word if you do this when you work, you will drive your colleagues insane as you are not setting up the formatting correctly. DO NOT DO THIS.....MS Word is not like a type writer....just making the number appear in white font will actually mess the other Chapter numbers up!

thank you so much, this is so much easier
Thank you so much for the solution.
Where do I get the new multilevel list??
@@doreenkwikiriza8239 it is on the Toolbar for PARAGRAPH. First bullets, then numbering, then multilevel list. Choose the one that links to headings.
