That's a difficult problem and one a lot of people have. There are some thinner ones. A lot of hockey mouth guards are thinner. You can also trim excess material from the ends of your mouth guard, so that it doesn't activate your gag reflex. Be sure you keep the material between your teeth!! There should be coverage for the entire bite area. It may take some searching and experimenting with a few different brands and/or types of mouth guards. And you might botch a few and need to toss it and start a new one. When you get a mouth guard that fits just right, it's great!! You can always go to your dentist for a custom fit mouth guard.
You can find them in the athletic section of most box stores like Walmart or Target. A sports store will definitely have them. Ask an employee. Shouldn’t be that expensive. If you’re going to spend big money, you might as well go to your dentist.
Bro tysm I’m doing football this year(8) bc I wanted to try it before highschool bc I’m a soccer player and I have messed up prev mouth Gaurd but this worked so thanks you🙏🙏
Likely, it will help. Be careful to not trim too much, as that could expose the teeth to getting chipped. Every mouth guard is going to be different. If you’re new to wearing one, it will take a while to become accustomed to it. And as always, you can go to your dentist for a professional fitting.
First thing is to go back and read the instructions. I’ve goofed a few times and gotten a different product than intended. Next is to look at your actual boil time and the cool off time. You need to have it in there long enough to soften. Then cool it enough to not burn yourself, but have it still soft enough to mold. It can take a few times to get it figured out. Let me know how it goes!
Some of my students have used the flavored ones. Directions should be the same, but be sure to read them for your specific mouthguard. I like to put it in before softening it just to get an idea of how much I can let it shrink. You can go too far! I'd suggest doing it a few times to get the best fit.
Always read the instructions. Some are boil the water, and some are just hot but not boiling water. Some are t meant to be moulded at all. So, make sure you read the package carefully before you buy it!
You should be able to just remold it by doing the process over again. But if it keeps you from having chipped teeth and you aren't gagging on it, then it should be OK.
Try to put it in your mouth and form it by sucking the air out of your mouth. Press the back of the mouthguard to your teeth with your tounge and the wront to yoir terth through your cheek with your fingers.
i really need help I've bought 4 mouthguards and ruined them all. I mold it pretty good and it fits the first time but the second time I try to put it on its ALWAYS too big and keeps falling out. I've missed alot of training sessions and can't spar and honestly plan on quitting b3cause of mouthguard issues unless I find a solution.
Sorry to hear that. Two recommendations: Talk to your instructor. If they are having you do sparring, then they should be able to help guide you through it. I’d suggest bringing in the ruined one. Your instructor should be able to tell you how to get it to fit. The second suggestion is to go to your dentist. They can mould one for you that will absolutely fit. It is more expensive, but wouldn’t you rather see them for the mouth guard than to fix a chipped tooth?
That's really going to depend on your dentist. There is the molding process and the materials. Could be a few hundred $$. For minor sparring with normal teeth, it's likely not necessary if you are confident with the one you did at home. Again, you're looking to protect your teeth from chipping. If you have any dental issues, or you don't feel confident with doing it at home, you should absolutely consult your dentist. I mean, you'd pay solid money for a good set of gloves or a gi, so why wouldn't you invest in something that would protect your teeth?
Custom mouth guards can start at $60 and up depending on who is making them, mouth piece guy makes solid mouth pieces, I believe they at start at $89, LGK does some too but I think they are only local In Los Angeles I’m not too sure but they charge $60 plus tax I have both and both are solid, lgk price you definitely can’t beat especially the quality is a1.
Have you shown it to your instructor or some of the senior students at your school.? Show them yours and see what they say. Like our training, sometimes it takes a few times to get it figured out. You'd ask your instructor/coach or a more senior student for help with a technique, so ask about this too. If all else fails, take it to your dentist. They are profesionals and will help you.
All my mouthguards feel too big and are a little too much out and referees say to keep it in my mouth in my fights, but I can't. And they are hard to breathe with, and if I buy smaller size they are good but are too short to protect the back of my teeth
I’d really suggest seeing your dentist and getting one made for you. Yes, they are more expensive, but it’s part of your equipment. If you’re already competing, you’re going to want a good mouth guard! It’s way cheaper to pay the dentist for the mouth guard than to fix a tooth!!! They can also help make adjustments to it for a better fit. Good luck and let me know how it turns out.
Not sure what you mean by not chewy. I used the same type of Mouthguard when I played football. There are a lot more options these days, so double check your packaging.
I would recommend that you have it between all of your teeth. The primary focus of this is to avoid chipped teeth. Secondary is to avoid getting knocked out. $10 and a bit of effort to mold a new one is way better than fixing a chipped tooth! I’m not a dentist, and I always suggest that you confer with your dentist. You can always mold it, and then take it in with you during your next visit.
Check what kind of Mouthguard you bought. It could be one that isn’t meant to be shaped like for braces. Be sure to read the package carefully before you purchase it. I’ve made that mistake before myself!! Was in a rush to get it and didn’t take the time to read the package. It was for braces and didn’t shape.
Hi, I'm a 17yr old trying to get into fighting but I have weird teeth. I mean like I have teeth just like a vampire on top of other teeth. So.... what are my options???
This would be a case of talking to your dentist. Just ask if you would need a special mouth guard or to get one moulded during your next cleaning. You have time. If you haven’t sorted out a mouth guard yet, then you have a ways to go before you start fighting.
Great! If you have someone knowledgeable that can help you, that's fantastic! I always just watch the mouth guard. Look for it to get a bit soft and test it out. You can always drop it back in the water for longer, but if you leave it too long then it can ruin the mouth guard. Water temp and material are always important. Read those instructions. There are some mouth guards that specifically state that the water should NOT be boiling. Keep those teeth safe and enjoy your training!!
If you're doing sparring or another contact sport with a mouthguard, your instructor or coach should have some knowledge about it. Check with them. If in doubt, go check with your dentist. They are the experts. If you don't feel comfortable with it, get a new one and do it over. It won't cost as much as fixing a chipped tooth!!
It is supposed to “melt” a bit. But it’s better to do it not quite enough. You can always put it back in the hot water. And another reason why I recommend getting two. It’s a process and one where you can mess up. Try using a lower heat level. Think yea boiling instead of pasta boiling.
That’s why I saw get two of them when you’re starting out. If you don’t know what you’re doing, then you are going to make mistakes. You can remold most of them, but if you cut it too much or boil it too long, that’s a teaching moment.
YOU DON'T WANT A CHIPPED TOOTH!! Shake: From your channel, I'm guessing you're about 12 years old. My channel is for adults, and I would never recommend that a minor attempt this themselves. When done properly, this is NOT harmful to your teeth. Dentists will tell you the same. I've done it many times myself and this is how most athletes and martial artists mould their mouthguards. As adults or with adult supervision. If your parents aren't comfortable helping you with it, then they can always speak to your dentist about having one made for you. Those are better, but also more costly.
How do you prevent mouth guard gag? Because every time something goes into my mouth a lil bit far if it’s not food then I’ll gag

I had the same issue when I had to bite into it to mould it. Now it’s fine.
You can trim the mouth guard to fit your mouth. Not recommended though
Very easy just trim it down a bit each side with scissors...it will still do its job.

You can trim the back if it’s to large I done it with my old cheap mouth guard
Absolutely! It’s why I always tell people doing it for the first time to get two! You inevitably trim too much that first time.
