Deer Fly Control - Kill Deer Flies - Deer Flies Don't Stand a Chance !

  • Deer Fly control can mean the difference between working outdoors and not working outdoors. Come see how we build a professional grade deer fly control helmet trap that doesn't leave you looking like a goofball just to control deer flies. Deer fly hat trap.
    This deer fly helmet design is mostly self cleaning as well! Over the course of many hours the Tanglefoot that you apply to the back of the helmet slides down into the trench created at the back carrying the flies with it. Then the stuff flows slowly to the lowest edge where it can be removed easily.
    I just remove the old stuff every day or two and apply a little more. This is REALLY a handy feature of this design!
    This is a Deer fly DIY How-to that will make your life a whole lot easier
    Deer fly patches work well for a short period of time but I was always forgetting they were there and getting them stuck to the headrest in my truck, or touching them with a hand. This professional deer fly control helmet is easy to make and far outperforms the patches and other helmets and hats that are put together with no consideration given to how goofy they may look.
    And remember, the more deer flies you catch the less there will be to hassle you. They don't hatch all year long, once they are gone, they are done for the season.
    If you need to find a way to control deer flies so you can get outdoors again, come check us out and we will help you to get a handle on things !

    Thanks for the video! I've never had tanglefoot run off the helmet, but I've only tanglefoot that was clear with a brush or with the spray can. Perhaps they have modified their formula, or only a thin layer is needed. As for the blue, I can't say they are [more] attracted to it, I have used white helmets (currently do) with good success in FL. In my experience, the most important thing is the contrast to the surroundings. I could say they aren't actually attracted to the color at all, but rather just end up landing on the surface after being expending energy buzzing around your movement/CO2. (mostly movement).
    They (the females) are ambush predators, where they sit still on a tree (usually upside down) constantly scanning for movement/contrast change. Once they attack, they'll stay with you for a good while aggressively trying to find a spot to bite. There is some reason why they don't simply land straight to the helmet, but rather buzz about it, as though bedazzled or intruiged, and eventually land to investigate. I have also noticed that they always tend to fly "up". In that, if they land on a scarf, or hunting buff, they will always fly back up, and continue swarming before usually just landing on the helmet. They don't really craw about on your skin. If they don't get a "hit" on the land, they fly "up" and pursue/circle before landing again.
    I use the helmet and scarf with a butt-dyno effectiveness of keeping 90% of potential bites from happening combined with a 90% chance of catching the fly on top. Have caught 30-40 in one day, and they seem to go down in the same area after that. I use the concept of kill/catch as many as you can using yourself as bait, to minimize next year's offspring. It seems to be working thus far.

    Neat! When I try it I will try a wire brush for the texture first.

      Excellent idea! I think a wire brush on a drill might do a fine job of providing texture, I wish I had thought of that!

      Chris,
      Thanks for the comment and the view!
      I am with you, I seem to be a magnet for deerflies, mice, & horseflies... good grief!
      The horsefly trap video I put out recently has a different kind of trap and it SEEMS to have actually been doing a decent job of dealing with deerflies at our farm.
      The deerflies have pretty much died off for this season where I am but I am sure hoping to verify that the horsefly trap is certifiably effective on deerflies next spring!
      Have a SUPER weekend!

    They just moved into hwere i live in the last 2 years. Never heard of or dealt with a deer fly prior. We just had horseflies. Deerflues are like horseflis on steroids. As soon as they land, the bite. Horseflies take a couple seconds first.

    Unbelievable the trouble we have to go through to deal with these SOB's! They can definitely ruin your day. FYI, my Aussie neighbor turned us on to tea tree oil to help with these and horse flies. It works. I put a few dabs on my collar, a few on the bill of my hat, and front and back of my shirt and it actually keeps them away...until you sweat through it, of course.

    Ok but how do you clean it for reuse?

    • @AHandleOnThings
      @AHandleOnThings  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I usually just let it sit in the sun for a while until the goo becomes easy to work with and then wipe it off with paper towels. If you want to remove ALL of the sticky you can use an orange cleaner.
      I use a product called "pure citrus" it is actually an air freshener spray but since it is actually "pure citrus" it is one of the best cleaners available.

    I just watched a video on the sky used the heavy duty blue nitrate gloves he hung two or three on a string hung them up about 4 to 5 feet from the ground and he caught a gazelle and he used that that sticky fly stuff that you use there and he caught 1 million of them on his traps so you might want to try that too

      I catch them on every color, but they seem to like the darker colors best and blue seems to work best. By all means though, experiment and whatever works best in your area is the way to go!

    Is it bad if you get bit by a deer fly?

    • @AHandleOnThings
      @AHandleOnThings  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tina,
      Getting bit by a deer fly is a little bit less painful than being bit by a horse fly.
      Or... Imagine a giant mosquito that hurts about half as much as a bee sting.
      In a nutshell deer flies suck blood and their bite is painful. Other than that I am unaware of any lasting effects like you might get from a tick (Lymes Disease) or a mosquito (malaria etc...)
      Hope you have a wonderful deer fly free summer!
