i recently took a workshop for polygel application with forms and tips and this video is helping me SO MUCH! I have very sensitive index nails and in the workshop my hyponychium hurt a lot when i tried to fit the form so when i did a fresh set i went with tips. I definitely want to stick to nail forms but it's so good to know how i can apply tips perfectly. I'm learning so much, thank you for putting these videos up for us to practice and perfect our techniques.

I think it would be really helpful if you showed welled tips aswell and how to use them. I see far too many techs who don't trim the well down for the nail size and end up with too much tip/Well covering the nail. Also, a point is that tipping bitten/short nails isn't a good idea as it doesn't leave enough nail to apply product to. Loved this video! Thanks for sharing!
If you spill nailglue on yourself (like a decent amount) get it off ASAP! You can actually get a chemical burn from it, and the burn will keep burning until all the glue is off :(
This is why I don’t use tips anymore - painful memory :(
If nail glue is so bad then why do people use dip powder systems? IIsn't the bond or whatever basically nail glue? What does it do on your nail for prolonged times?
This is the question of the century...dip powder systems are literally nail glue and acrylic powder yet they are marketed as "full of vitamins" or as "healthy". That's my whole point with you guys understanding fully what everything is so you can make these educated choices rather than getting sucked in by marketing tactics.
FYI don't spill nail glue on certain fabrics, can cause combustion. Don't ask how I know just learn from my silly mistake
drumjunkie4eva I did that yesterday (I legit just ordered stuff off of amazon to fix my cracking nail problem, since campus dining sucks) and it was a strange icy feeling that quickly turned into boiling hot and then next thing I knew, my hand was stuck to my floor and I was too far away from my acetone, so I had to peel my hand off, lol.

I use dip and the research I did before hand basically said that between the "base" and "activator" the ingredients where essentially the same as the acrylic monomer but it's in two parts instead of the one. I have spilt the base on myself and it acts the same as nail glue and smells similar. I have been using dip for roughly a year and for me it's not damaged my nails or anything but I oil them between manis and use gel every few manis, gels allot harder to get off for me so I don't like using it as much. But it's allot easier to develop an allergy to dip because the base and activator can flood the cuticle easier and and it's rather hard on your skin especially after soaking off a set and going straight to a new one. Sorry for the random comment hope you are well!
So good. Followed these steps and was able to get my tips to last from the usual one week to three!
I’ve been using tips for years and love them. Now I use the dual forms with poly gel over top of them and am very happy with the end result. By doing this method, I don’t have to spend time smoothing out the ridge line from the tip since the product automatically smooths out the surface of the nail.

J Byrnes Yep. The tip acts as the “base” similar to using a nail form. Just glue on the tip, trim to the desired length, use either acrylic or gel, whichever you prefer, and put the product in the dual form instead of directly on the nail. Cure in the lamp and pop off the dual form. You will have a smooth, shiny nail that should only need some filing on the sides and free edge just like if you applied the product directly on the nail. I need more practice as I still have quite a mess to clean up under the nail, but that’s a breeze with an e-file and the right bit. Then just lightly buff the nail surface and you’re ready to polish. There are quite a few vids on TH-cam. That’s how I learned how to do it as I am totally a DIY person. It’s totally changed how I do my nails for the better.

hey this is helpful .Quick question is polygel less good for your natural nails i did fake nails a month bad since i removed them my natural nails are so weak and break daily sometimes its very painful.fake nails are cute but which method wont damage my real nails? Thanks.

Another very informative video. So far, the only thing I have really used is polygel with those forms. I tried a long time ago to use tips with acrylic and it felt like a filed for a month to get all the bulky product off. lol. Maybe one day I'll get brave and try it again, but for now, I'm loving the ease of polygel.

I'm so glad you mentioned at 8:40 that you don't like to use this method because water/dirt can get between the glue and natural nail. I just bought a the Light Elegance builder gels and wanted to explore using forms, but the tips briefly caught my attention since I'm coming as a total novice from press-ons. I can only imagine I'd have similar problems to moisture seeping under the glue with press-ons. Thank you! Your videos have been so helpful on this journey for me.

Every time i file the tips to blend onto the natural nails after applying they pop off!!!! Why?????
You might be using too little glue or you could be filing through the plastic and making it weak?
You should get different tips because they are the main problem (my teacher's friend had the same problem)

I'm a form girl myself but wow you're so amazing at giving such detailed troubleshooting with your experience, I swear my instructor set us up to fail like she was competitive and superior to her students and everything I had to learn on my own.. I still got some questions:
1. Is it possible to file the edge of the tip to the thinnest possible before attaching on to the nail (to prevent damage of the natural nail through filing)
2. Is there any way to build up product on the beginning edge of the tip so you dont have to file the tip? (Just let the product smooth out the rough edges of the tip)
My main concern is damaging the natural nail by overfiling it, sure you have to be careful and practice but if you could avoid , is it an option? Thanks a lot!

3 years into nails and this has only solidified my decision to only sculpt. I’ve never used tips, but structurally they look like a hassle to correct.

Thank you! I just put on 2 tips before watching this video. I like smaller tips I like the dainty look but now I know all about them. I didn't know that you just file the tops smooth to the nail, I thought you had to fill the whole nail (I was going to do that baking soda nail glue thing) with acrylic or something 😄I had already started with one strip of glue and b soda along the top but now I'm filing it off just to a smooth transition. Does anyone ever do that where you fill the back with acrylic or poly?
I'm learning so much!!! I went to cosmetology school 10 years ago, learned very basic stuff but that was a long time ago and things have COMPLETELY changed with the whole gel world. I'm a tips fan, I haven't seen or done the other thing you like, I'll have to check that out. My tips look amazing even though they're slightly smaller, I don't really care because I'm a huge fan of the dainty look. I did a straight tip but cut and filed it to a curved oval french and it looks so amazing I'm so happy righ nah hahaha I just use the dollar store glue that comes in the tool area. It works great. It's the same thing and it even says you can use it on nails so it's no big deal. Looking forward to finishing my hands.

Hey Liz! I understand why you wouldn't normally use nail tips; in what specific cases would you say nail tips are the reccomend use? (Short bitten nails?/short nail beds?)
Also when I do my own nails I usually make them quite thick so they don't break (because I'm rough with them), however my clients prefer thin nail extensions, so my question is how thin can you go without them breaking?

I love your videos, thank you so much. You're an awesome resource. How do you deal with tips that have a c curve that is more severe than the c curve of the natural nail? If you push the tip curve to fit the nail won't it eventually pop up?
Hi Liz question for you. I have watched TH-cam videos of other nail techs and they only smooth the wings of the tips and not the entire surface that contacts the natural nail. Is there a reason for this? When I was doing nails years ago we blended the entire tip.

What do you type in to find the nail tips you used?
Non-professional, ignorant question... What would happen if a person put on tips (like the length in your video), and then just did a thorough gel manicure over it? With no further sculpting. Would it last? Given a relatively short length, would it matter that the proper structure/apex was not placed over the tip before base, color, and top coats??
So this is called a "blended tip" where you would use a fine grit to smooth the edge of the tip to the nail; then you would brush a layer of glue over the entire nail and the tip; let set and then brush another layer of glue, and then apply gel polish like you described. The glue it for extra structure. They teach it in school but personally I don't like it because like you said it has no structural shape and like Liz I hate nail glue I would not want to be brushing it all over my nail or someone else's nail. Pretty much when they taught us I was like "ok so I will never use this, great..."
Maybe some people still do it? If you did like you said without the additional glue I think any stress on the tip would cause it to break or tear off the free edge. You would be better off learning to add a thin layer of clear hard gel over the nail and tip and then use a hard gel color or a gel polish. Someone more experienced than me might chime in (I'm still in school) but that's my suggestion.
Gel does not like to stick to shiny surfaces. It requires to the surface to have some roughage to it for the gel to seep into and hold.
Filing the tip increases the surface area the gel can hold on to in the same manner that you file down the surface of anything you are gluing down with hardware glue.
I used to be an engineer, and this is what I was taught... seems to work on nails as well lol
Hi Chrissy, they wouldn't last very long. Gel polish is not strong enough to hold this length. Check out my apex and c-curve video if you haven't already.
If someone wants a temporary set for just a few days, for a special occasion then just do that, as long as they are short. A long length wouldn't last a day.

What about applying the tips with clear/builder gel? I know it would be tricky to cure while holding the tip without moving it, but I’m thinking about that Apres system that’s out.
Hi Jill, I would not recommend this as gel is slippery and the tip will slide as it's curing, you will most likely get some kind of air pocket, and it's also likely that excess gel will squish out of all sides creating more of mess than a benefit. I prefer sculpting with forms as the number one option, but option two for me would be a tip with glue.
Thank you for this video! I have tried so many different tips and just don't typically like the shape and feel like there's always one finger on every person that none of them fit properly… My index finger on both hands actually tips down a little bit more than the rest of my nails.. That's what initially prompted me to start using forms.. That and I find that it's hard to find a glue that works on everyone's nails… I have had many clients that I could hold a five second nail glue on for 30 seconds and it just will not adhere!

Youre not alone! I struggle with that even when using forms! Im a hair stylist. I do microblading and eyelashes, have been in the industry for 20 years. Nails are my new challenge and thats one of my biggest hang ups! Filing and shaping without screwing up basic structure is very hard for me!!

What if the nail is stiletto shape, how would you cut that down?
I've seen other techs cutting the side if they need stiletto and reshaping to make them shorter. Also you can buy short stiletto too. But I'll suggest look for a video
1. Why do we have to blend the tip?
2. How to use coloured tips? Do we need to rough up the surface of the tip necessarily?

Hi Liz. Will you recommend one single thicker layer gel application over tips? Like in your sculpting video, or would you suggest doing gel in two layers over tips? Thanks!
I do a wetting layer and then a blob just like I do over gel extensions. That technique makes for smoother nails. Only caveat is there will be more of a heat spike so flash curing is essential.

You can use any strong/rigid gel (soak off or hard gel doesn't matter). Just make sure you take the shine off the nail tip before you apply your gels. You'd first put base on the natural nail part, and then proceed with a builder gel.

personally never had a problem, just wanted to let everyone know, use at your own risk everybody ☺️
Cyanoacrylate is cyanoacrylate whether it says nail glue or anything else. I personally hate glue, but if you want to use it I'd rather see a bottle that says nail glue on someone's table than one that says it's for screws or wood. There's an element of professionalism that comes with using products that are packaged and made for our industry. That's really my only opinion on why I wouldn't buy supplies at Home Depot.
Oops, lol. Ive been doing these wrong, but I cut them super short just to serve as a barrier to keep my nails from breaking. (College diet, my nails are brittle af, lol.) I don’t put gel on them, I literally just use them like some vernier for the top part of my nails.

Hi can u pleeeez help me, why are the actual false nail tips we can buy for extending nail extentians. Why are these nail false tips different thuckineses and thineses. The tips that we glue the edge natural nail before applying any product to them. Some are way thicker then others. Can you tel me why. Its been doing my head in lol x

Can you just apply nail polish on this tip and ur natural nail without any poly gel?will it look silly?
I would recommend to use polygel or builder gel on top as the nail tip won't lay on completely flat on your own nails. When you put the colour on you would see a line where the nail tip has been attached.
And also it helps to keep the tip in place, so it's gonna be more durable.
Why do they not pre-etch the top of nail tips?? Couldnt they create them to be thinner that way?
At the end of the video, what would be the next step? Could you go ahead and do pH bond and primer and gel color and topcoat??

I hope I can explain this.... I have some beautiful tips that look EXACTLY like these (they are Ugly Duckling premium tips)... The c curve is beautiful, but the free edge of natural nails are much "flatter" so I find when I fit the tip properly it requires the tip to be "pushed" down during gluing resulting in a "popping up" and difficulty with the tip adhereing. Also the "smile line" of the tip is so deep I often have to slide the tip up further, and then that causes the corners (when it's pushed flush to the free edge) the "flare" to wide. So I feel like I'm darned if I do and darned if I don't, if I match the corners to the side wall I have a gap at the free edge; if I slide the tip up to eliminate the gap the corners flare, and if I choose a smaller tip the c curve is too drastic and it "pops" up. Can I just modify them? I can't even seem to get that right when I try. .. and It's extra work. I want to love them but I have yet to find a client (or myself) that they fit like this. It's like in this video you happen to have the perfect shape nail to avoid every problem I have. 🤦
Cut out a small “v” shape from the center of the tip well to avoid this.

Violet Powell I learned this tip in Nails Magazine. My nail beds are really flat and what you’ve described was happening to me too. You can actually buy tips that have them pre-cut like this. (OPI’s Expansion, Creative’s Eclipse, and Nailite’s X-tips) You will have to push the tip up a little more, but not by much. It does work though. I wish after the tip process she would have shown the whole gel applying process too. The other vids are just showing process with nail forms...unless they are both the same
